Black Myth: Wukong Among Top 3 Best-Rated Games on Steam In 2024

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong is the biggest and among the best releases of 2024.
  • The game has a solid positive rating of over 95% on Steam which makes it the third best-rated title on Steam.
  • The top two best-rated games of 2024 are Balatro and Satisfactory but the difference between the top 3 isn’t too much.

Black Myth: Wukong is the biggest hit of 2024 and has sold well over 20 million copies already. No one was expecting this game to dominate the single-player genre entirety. It is the most-played single-player game on Steam, which isn’t a small feat to achieve.

The game also has over 95% positive reviews on Steam. Not only does it have a lot of positive reviews it is also among the top 3 best-rated games on Steam in 2024

Why it matters: Black Myth: Wukong’s launch was surprising but it wasn’t a bluff at all. The game managed to secure a solid rating on Steam which speaks volumes.

Black Myth Wukong 3rd Best Rated Steam Game
Black Myth: Wukong is The 3rd Best-Rated Steam Game of 2024

The game is appearing among the top 3 which is a huge accomplishment but some fans might not find it fair. That is because the difference between peak concurrent player count among all three is just way too much. For reference, Wukong has nearly 940K reviews on Steam and among them over 95% are positive.

So, some might argue that the Chinese RPG attracted more negative reviews because of its popularity. However, according to the statistics it is at the number 3rd spot which is a pretty good one. It should also be noted that there isn’t much difference in the percentage either

Black Myth: Wukong Stunning Environments
Black Myth: Wukong Not Only Offers Stunning Visuals But Also Great Gameplay

Black Myth: Wukong has a solid rating of 95.51% positive reviews while Balatro and Satisfactory have 95.65% and 95.60% positive reviews respectively. Fans also expect this Chinese action RPG to win the Game of the Year award this year.

The game’s expansions are already in development and are reportedly targeting the release window of Q1 2025. It is also worth noting that it only cost $42.3 million to develop and generated over $1 billion in revenue.

What do you think of Black Myth: Wukong being the 3rd most positive reviewed game of 2024? Do you think it deserves this spot? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below or join the discussion on Tech4Gamers’ official forums.

TeamGroup T-Force Xtreem DDR5 is one of those DRAM solutions that primarily focus on delivering raw performance. That doesn’t mean they lack visually appealing design or other similar stuff. This premium high-performance memory kit comes with a 2mm thick aluminum heat sink that has a sandblasted finish all over it with multiple fins on top. This helps the DRAM stay cool even when going under intense overclocking sessions.

As for performance, oh boy, this kit does not mess around. We tested it against more than a dozen DDR5 kits, and it put all of them behind with exceptional results. TeamGroup has really knocked it out of the park with the 8000MHz frequency and CL38 latency. Put simply, if you want an absolute top-tier performance RAM to pair with your i9-14900K, there is no better option that surpasses the T-Force Xtreem DDR5.

When our hardware expert, Nauman Siddique, tested the T-Force Xtreem’s performance on AIDA64, this is what he said:

Holy smoke! The T-Force XTREEM 16GBx2 DDR5 kit operating at 8000MHz at 1.450V has smashed all other kits in the graph with a good all-round performance. This was expected from this kit. In all three memory bandwidth operations, this kit has a clear upper hand over all the other 13 kits. This kit has even managed to take a top slot in the Latency benchmark showing its supremacy. This is an excellent performance from the Teamgroup’s flagship DDR5 kit.

Buy It If

You wish for the highest-performing DRAM kit: Since this DRAM has a frequency of 8000 MT/s with CAS38 timings. It’s the highest-performing kit among the competition.

You want a sleeper build: The DRAM lacks RGB lighting and has an all-black heat spreader, it can be considered for sleeper and stealth builds.

Don't Buy It If

Height might be a problem: If you plan to use an air cooler, especially one that lacks RAM clearance of at least 48.8 mm, better skip this RAM for good.

You want RGB lights on your RAM: If you want a memory kit with RGB lighting, then better skip this kit, as it features a heat spreader only that doesn’t have RGB of any sort.

What Makes It The Best Performance RAM For i9-14900K?

As seen in our test results, the TeamGroup T-Force Xtreem DDR5-8000 CL38 really topped all RAM benchmarks to offer the best possible performance. On top of that, you get a rather sleek design which I personally think is a breath of fresh air from all the RGB craze. Well, put the two together, and there is no other performance-focused kit I would recommend for the Core i9-14900K.

Important RAM Key Terms

When buying RAM in 2023, be sure to keep the following key terms in mind.

  1. DIMM Slots: DIMM slots, or Dual In-Line Memory Module slots, are physical connectors on a computer’s motherboard designed to hold and connect RAM modules. The number of DIMM slots on a motherboard determines the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed in the system, as well as the potential for memory channel configurations.
  2. DDR (Double Data Rate): DDR is a type of synchronous DRAM that transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal, effectively doubling the data transfer rate compared to single data rate memory.
  3. Frequency: RAM frequency, also known as clock speed, measures the speed at which data can be transferred to and from RAM in cycles per second (Hertz). Higher frequencies generally result in better memory performance.
  4. Latency: RAM latency refers to the delay between a request for data and the moment that data becomes available for use, impacting overall system performance.
  5. Voltage: RAM voltage refers to the electrical voltage supplied to a computer’s memory modules (RAM). It is an important parameter because different RAM modules require different voltage levels for proper operation.
  6. CAS Latency (CL): CAS latency is a specific type of RAM latency that measures the delay between a read command and the actual data retrieval, expressed in clock cycles.
  7. ECC (Error-Correcting Code): ECC RAM includes additional error-checking and correction capabilities to detect and fix memory errors, commonly used in servers and workstations for data integrity.
  8. Dual-Channel and Quad-Channel: These terms refer to the memory configuration in which two or four memory modules work in parallel to increase memory bandwidth and performance.

Fret not, as here are some key factors to consider when purchasing the ideal RAM for your Core i9-14900K.

  • Frequency and Latency: As is common with high-end CPUs, the Core i9-14900K CPU is designed to take advantage of high RAM frequencies. However, it is important to also consider CAS latency (CL), as lower latency values can improve responsiveness, especially in tasks that rely heavily on random memory access.
  • Overclocking Potential: Modules with XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) support can simplify the initial overclocking process. However, you can even improve its performance even further by manually overclocking the RAM. Look for RAM kits with good heat dissipation solutions, as overclocking can generate additional heat. Memory kits with high base voltages are also great for overclocking.
  • Thermals and Efficiency: Heat spreaders, heatsinks, and even liquid cooling solutions can help dissipate heat effectively. When shopping for a new RAM kit, it is ideal to consider those modules that have a proper heat spreader for efficient heat dissipation.
  • DDR4 vs. DDR5: Since the Core i9-14900K CPU supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, you will have to consider this decision as well. DDR5 RAM offers a significant performance boost over DDR4, with faster data transfer rates and the potential for greater capacity. However, consider DDR4 if you want to save a buck on the memory and motherboard, but be aware that DDR4 memory has limited future upgrade potential.
  • Aesthetics and Build Quality: While aesthetics are subjective, ensure that the RAM you choose fits the physical constraints of your case and works with your CPU cooler. You should also make sure that the RAM matches the design language of your PC and the aesthetic appeal of the other components in your system.
  • Platform Compatibility: Always check your motherboard’s compatibility list (QVL) to ensure that the RAM you choose is officially supported. Moreover, it is important to choose XMP-certified memory to ensure proper optimization for the Core i9-14900K.

The Core i9-14900K supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory. The 14th Gen Intel processors carry the same memory support as the outgoing 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs. You will need to buy a DDR4 motherboard for DDR4 memory and a DDR5 motherboard to run DDR5 memory.

What is the max RAM speed for 14900K?

Officially, the Core i9-14900K supports DDR4 memory up to 3200 MT/s, and DDR5 memory up to 5600 MT/s, but those are conservative numbers. The Core i9-14900K can work well with memory modules up to 7200 MT/s in my testing, which technically falls under the realm of RAM overclocking.

Does 14900K support DDR4?

Yes, the Core i9-14900K supports DDR4 memory. The Raptor Lake Refresh processors support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, which is great for widespread compatibility. Just be sure to buy a DDR4 motherboard if you want to run DDR4 memory.

What is the best frequency for 14900K RAM?

The Core i9-14900K works best with RAM frequencies above 6000 MHz. The sweet spot lies between 6600 MHz and 7200 MHz for the optimal balance of performance and cost.

Should I buy DDR4 RAM for Core i9-14900K?

You can pair DDR4 RAM with the Core i9-14900K as well, but it has certain drawbacks. DDR4 memory has lower performance and higher power draw than DDR5 memory, and it also has limited future upgrade potential. It does have the advantage of affordability and widespread compatibility, but that may not be the case in the future.

Dead Space 4 Teased, Creator Says He’s ‘Ready To Go Back’ To Horror Game Series

Story Highlight
  • The last mainline entry in the Dead Space franchise was released over a decade ago.
  • The franchise creator has recently stated that he would love to work on a new game in the franchise.
  • He says he’s ready to return to work on the iconic horror franchise.

Dead Space is one of the most popular horror game franchises. The first game’s remake was released last year and did fairly well at launch.

EA was quick to create a survey asking fans if they want more remakes in the franchise. However, Dead Space’s creator has recently thanked fans for their support and stated that he’s ready to return, suggesting that we might get a new game in the franchise.

Why it matters: The horror genre has seen a significant resurgence in the last two years, and a new entry in the Dead Space franchise would introduce many new players to the genre.

AMD Finally Retires its Legendary 7 5800X3D Processor

Story Highlight
  • AMD is set to launch its Zen5 processor, causing Zen4 CPU prices to rise as Zen3 models are discontinued.
  • AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D has been a strong performer in gaming, but its successor, the 7800X3D, has further solidified AMD’s position in the market.
  • The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 6-core 5600X3D are being phased out, leading to a scarcity in stores.

While AMD is ready to present its Zen5 processor, featuring its 3D V-Cache technology, the price of the Zen4 CPU has risen to its highest point in months. AMD is discontinuing its Zen3 CPU amid this shift to a newer architecture.

Why it matters: With the end of Zen 3 3D V-Cache options, new users will no longer have access to cheaper AM4-based processors and might have to shift to AMD’s more expensive AM5 platform.

Although AMD has taken the lead in gaming with the 8-core Ryzen 7 5800X3D, its replacement, the Ryzen 7800X3D, has further strengthened that position.  The 5800X3D is gradually vanishing from stores, and few are left for purchase.

Nevertheless, AMD continues to sell a somewhat slower 8-core 5700X3D variant. It should be noted that in addition to the 5800X3D being discontinued by all retailers, the 6-core 5600X3D has also been withdrawn. MicroCenter, which served as the CPU’s sole US vendor, confirms this.

In the meantime, the price of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has been rising sharply. The EU version currently retails for €433, compared to €340 normally. The CPU is currently available for $429 in the US, which is only $20 less than its MSRP.

With the 9800X3D leading the way and the 9950X3D and 9900X3D following later, AMD is anticipated to unveil its Ryzen 9000X3D series shortly. Rumors about a 6-core version are also circulating, considering that it was released for the Zen4 and Zen3 lineup.

Metaphor: ReFantazio And Persona Director Prioritizes Mental Health Over User Feedback

Story Highlight
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona director Katsura Hashino has claimed that he prioritizes his mental health over user feedback.
  • He says that constantly looking at user reactions is unhealthy, but he does read feedback in moderation after a game launches.
  • Keiichiro Toyama, the Silent Hill creator, is more keen on following user reactions for his next game, Slitterhead.

It is reasonable to say that the success of the Persona franchise is not a bluff by any means. With the insane success of Metaphor: ReFantazio so far, many have wondered just what secret formula Atlus has used to keep its games so successful. The director of both franchises, Katsura Hashino, might just have the answers we’re all looking for.

Katsura has clarified that he prioritizes his mental health over the abundant user feedback his projects receive from fans and critics alike.

Why it matters: Katsura Hashino prioritizes his mental health over the diverse user feedback for his projects, which suggests that he does not focus on satisfying every gamer. Instead, the director considers general opinions.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fun JRPG filled with huge servings of activities and engaging stories.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fun JRPG filled with huge servings of activities and engaging stories.

In an interview with Famitsu, Katsura Hashina gave his two cents about user reactions in a dialogue with Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama. He tries not to be conscious of what gamers think about his works. That does not mean he entirely gives up on the reactions but keeps a safe distance instead.

When I need to look something up, I do it quickly in one go, because constantly monitoring user reactions isn’t good for my mental health.

-Katsura Hashina

He only checks what everyone has to say in extreme moderation, mostly after a game launches when it is too late to change anything. He also admits to not using social media either.

The Persona franchise is filled with popular games that allegedly embody some of the best JRPG elements.
The Persona franchise features many popular releases that stand out in the JRPG genre.

Keiichiro Toyama, on the flip side, is more keen on actively listening to what gamers want to help develop Slitterhead effectively with Bokeh Game Studio.

Katsura Hashino’s ideology might be the best option for developers to follow for effective releases. But what are your thoughts regarding his approach? Let us know your opinions in the comments below, or join us for a discussion in the official Tech4Gamers forums.

The Masterliquid ATMOS 360 ticks all the boxes, and that’s why it’s our Best Overall selection. Its fin density is 20, and Cooler Master’s SickeFlow Edge fans are tasked with dissipating the heat, with a 3.61 mmH2O static pressure rating. This cooler proved among the top-performing 360mm AIOs in our testing and kept our 14900K from thermal throttling under multi-threaded workloads. The cooler is sturdy, and we had no complaints about its build quality.

The cooler features a sleek and beautiful A-RGB-powered design that will fit right in with any black/white-themed build. Cooler Master allows the freedom of custom 3D-printed designs on the water block. We were happy with the default design, especially thanks to the beautifully implemented A-RGB.

PRO TIP: Cooler creating too much noise? Try adjusting its fan curves.

Here’s what I had to say after testing the cooler in my dedicated review:

You’re an RGB enthusiast: For RGB lovers, the cooler’s RGB fans and water blocks should provide a delightful experience.

You prefer the customizability: Through printables.com, you can download and 3D-print a new design to swap out the cooler’s default water block design.

❌Don't Buy It If
You want a more neatly organized cable setup: If you like to have maximum convenience, the lack of organized daisy-chain cable management might disappoint you.

What Makes It The Best Overall CPU Cooler For Core i9-14900K?

With its sleek looks and top performance, the MasterLiquid 360 ATMOS was bound to be part of our picks. Its patented dual-chamber design enables faster water flow, and the high-performance SickeFlow Edge fans do an excellent job driving that heat away. The cooler looks beautiful, with evenly diffused RGB across the fans and the block. It’s also thoughtful of Cooler Master to focus on eco-friendliness, with the pump top cover built from recycled plastic materials and a portion of the cooler’s material being recyclable.

Read Our Noctua NH-D15 G2 Review

The Noctua NH-D15 G2 improves on the incredibly popular NH-D15 that we love. It features 8 heat pipes (vs. 6) and 2x Noctua NF-A14 G2 fans and provides a larger contact area for the CPU. The fans’ blade count is increased to nine, with more prominent curves. Build quality is no less than the very best we’ve come to expect of Noctua, and the fans’ liquid crystal polymer base is a notable change. All these improvements led to around a 4.5°C improvement in the i9-14900K’s temperature during our load testing, compared to the standard NH-D15. This places it at the very top among air coolers. Acoustic performance has also improved–we recorded 38dBA under load.

The cooler has a dual-tower design and expands on Noctua’s signature brown-beige theme. With that, there’s not much to admire about how it looks. Both the heatsink and heat pipes are made of aluminum, and the cooler can stand out, but only thanks to its great size and vanilla aesthetic.

I was blown away by the performance of the NH-D15 G2 in our review. This is what I said:

It features an enhanced heatsink design with eight heat pipes and a fin stack that provides 20% more surface area while maintaining a low noise level of 24.8 dBA. The cooler is undoubtedly a must-have for anyone after extreme performance from an air cooler.

Read Our Enermax Liqmaxflo 360 Review

The Enermax Liqmaxflo improves on previous generation coolers with its dual-chamber pump design. Tunings include an enlarged coolant inlet, Shunt-Channel Technology (faster coolant flow), and an optimized fluid channel. Enermax uses Silent Flow fans rated at just 23.46 dBA, which have 5x 3mm wide blades for optimal static pressure. Lastly, the radiator is 38mm thick (the common thickness is 27mm nowadays!). It cooled the 14900K well in our testing, competing with coolers like the EK-Nucleus CR360, and was also among the quietest of the bunch.

The cooler’s RGB lighting is just as good as any we’ve seen. Both the fans and the pump feature RGB (the pump’s RGB is provided by the VRM fan). With the black-and-white contrast between the radiator and the fans, the cooler looks gorgeous even without RGB—so if RGB is not your thing, fret not!

Speaking of its design, here’s what our hardware expert, Nauman Siddique, said about the cooler:

The ENERMAX LIQMAXFLOW 360mm is a powerful AIO CPU cooler perfect for high-end CPUs. It features a thick radiator, dual-chamber pump, and a unique VRM fan to keep your CPU cool and quiet, even under heavy load. It’s also compatible with a wide range of sockets, has a refill port, and is rated for 400W TDP, making it an excellent value for the price.

✅Buy It If

You’re seeking performance on a budget: At $129, the Liqmaxflo 360 competes with more expensive AIOs on our list.

Low noise operation is important: The cooler’s acoustic performance is just as impressive; in our testing, it is kept under 50 dBA at maximum fan RPM.

You like the extra features: The cooler offers some great features, like the VRM fan, 100ml coolant for refills (the mechanism is straightforward), and tube clips for easy orientation.

❌Don't Buy It If
Compatibility is a concern: With a 37mm thick radiator and an overall thickness of 64.8mm with the fans, this cooler may not fit in all builds.

What Makes It The Best Budget Cooler For The Core i9-14900K?

While $129 isn’t the friendliest price tag, it buys a cooler that competes with the best 360mm AIOs on the market—and so, a cooler that is plenty for the i9-14900K. In our testing, it showed superb thermal management and didn’t make a lot of noise during the process. Couple that with its great looks, a handy VRM fan providing extra cooling to your motherboard’s phases, a refillable coolant design, and a 5-year warranty, and this is a stellar option.

Why We Didn’t Opt For These CPU Coolers?

After extensive and detailed testing, we could only place a select number of CPU coolers in our listicle. Here are a few CPU coolers that barely missed the mark:

  • Corsair iCUE H150i Elite Capellix XT: It comes with a higher price tag and has a non-magnetic hub with loose Intel brackets.
  • NZXT Kraken X53: There is too much cable clutter, and the NZXT CAM software can be buggy at times.

Halo Studios Community Manager Implies Gamers Are Racist; Asks Them To Be Human

Story Highlight
  • The Halo Community manager’s recent tweet was interpreted as dismissive and implying racism.
  • Many longtime players feel their concerns are being dismissed.
  • Gamers argue that the focus on DEI is affecting game development at Halo Studios.

Halo Studios is once again at the center of another controversy. This time, the controversy revolves around some players’ worries about the studio’s focus on DEI policies and how these might affect game development.

The community manager, John Junyszek responded to the controversy, which some interpreted as implying that part of the gaming community may have racist attitudes.

Why it matters: Longtime Halo players are extremely concerned over the recent changes at Halo Studios. However, the community manager’s response doesn’t provide any reassurance.

Halo Community Manager Implies Gamers Are Racist
Criticisms around identity politics in game development reflect broader societal debates.

When asked about how these DEI policies affect game development, Junyszek responded in a way that many interpreted as suggesting that critics of these initiatives were being racist. His comments seemed dismissive of real concerns and quickly led to a heated backlash online.

Junyszek posted on Twitter, implying that some of the criticisms might stem from racial bias:

I’ve never had my work questioned due to my race, religion, or gender. It’s no secret that my experience is far different than that of many game devs. Practice kindness. Be human.

-John Junyszek

People in the comments argue that Junyszek’s comments unfairly grouped together the concerns of gamers. Many believe that valid criticisms about the direction of the Halo franchise—such as gameplay, storylines, and overall quality—were overshadowed by claims of racism.

Some players expressed frustration, feeling that their worries about the game’s development were dismissed without being taken seriously.

Fans Worried About Halo Franchise
DEI initiatives have been met with skepticism or outright hostility from certain segments of the fanbase.

The controversy at Halo Studios is part of a larger discussion happening in the gaming industry. In recent years, DEI initiatives have become a key focus as studios work to diversify their teams and promote fair representation across different identities.

However, this has faced severe criticism. Some gamers and industry professionals feel that these policies can come off as insincere or forced.

Moreover, a recent poll suggests over 95% of gamers don’t think inclusivity is important in gaming. Anyhow, finding the right balance between promoting inclusivity and addressing community concerns remains a tricky issue for many studios.

The Gaming Industry Has Shortage of Decent Spy Epsionage Games

Story Highlight
  • Nowadays, games like the feeling of thrill and excitement that we once got from playing titles like Splinter Cell and Project I.G.I.
  • The Industry needs more Spy espionage games, which would be a refreshing break from the many action games.
  • Spy Espionage games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Splinter Cell Remake, and James Bond will be released in upcoming years.

In my early gaming days, I remember playing titles like Project I.G.I. and Goldeneye, fully taking on a spy protagonist role and feeling like one myself. These games were immersive and absolute thrillers to play from start to finish.

The thought of a single man taking down operations to save a country from enemies of the state or just protecting the world was just really awesome. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since I’ve played a game like this, with the last one being Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

The gaming industry’s norms have changed and no matter how many times I’ve discussed it, I hate the fact that publishers are now chasing trends instead of making awesome and thrilling projects like these. I really want more Spy Espionage games.

Why It Matters: There hasn’t been a decent spy espionage game in quite some time, and gamers nowadays have yet to experience the thrill and level of immersiveness in these games. This is why I believe developers should lean towards this genre again.

What Makes Spy Espionage Games Differ From Stealth Games

GoldenEye 007
GoldenEye 007 Is One Of The Best FPS Games

Spy espionage games are more of a sub-genre of stealth games. While these games are based on the entire purpose of a stealth approach, they differ significantly from conventional stealth games.

Stealth games are focused on almost the exact same principle as Spy espionage games, which involve the basic premise of sneaking and subduing enemies. However, the narrative is the most significant difference between conventional stealth and Spy espionage games.

Stealth games can be based on a character’s personal story or an overarching story within the world, but Spy espionage games, on the other hand, are based more on narrative.  This sub-genre involves playing as a government agent who takes on high-stakes missions that revolve around conflicts on a worldwide scale.

Almost everyone who has watched the Mission Impossible movies wanted to be like Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and channel out their inner spy after watching the film, being the single person who takes down big targets to protect the world.

Spy Espionage games do exactly that. With high-tech gadgets and tools at the helm, players infiltrate enemy bases or camps, retrieve documents, or kill high-profile targets in games like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid.

Here Are Some Upcoming Spy Espionage Games You Should Look Forward To

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Keeps The Original Game’s Essence Perfectly Alive

While the sub-genre is stagnant right now, starting next year, many great video games will be released that are a throwback to the PlayStation 2 era of Spy-themed video games.

Starting off, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the remake of the series’ third game, entirely replicating the original game, just built with new graphics. Metal Gear Solid games are one of the best spy-themed games but are more on the fictional side and feature some of the greatest video game characters in history.

Next on the list, the original Splinter Cell is also getting a remake from the ground up. It will be readjusted in terms of storytelling to fit modern gaming standards. Splinter Cell is as spy-themed as a video game can get.

I honestly want newer gamers to enjoy the feel of playing as Sam Fisher, taking on near-impossible missions, and feeling like a badass.

Aside from remakes, IOI Interactive is also working on a James Bond game featuring an entirely new storyline. Knowing the developers’ work on Hitman games, I can rest assured that they will create a title that perfectly encapsulates every aspect of Bond’s character and what made him America’s best spy.

In the meantime, I recommend playing Hitman: World of Assassination, the live-service relaunch of Hitman 3. It features all the storylines from the first three games and new episodes featuring celebrities such as the legendary MMA boxer Connor McGregor.

Lost Souls Aside Is The Perfect Game For Devil May Cry And Final Fantasy Fans

Story Highlight
  • Lost Souls Aside was revealed nearly a decade ago as an indie game and has since made remarkable progress.
  • As 2024 nears its end, speculation grows about another release delay, but the game’s blend of elements from Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry keeps anticipation high.
  • Despite limited plot details, its stunning gameplay, massive level design, and rich development story make it a standout title that could overshadow major upcoming releases.

I can’t believe it’s been almost a decade since Lost Souls Aside was revealed as an indie game. The title has come so far in terms of development since then, and the gameplay outdoes most AAA games in the fantasy-action genre.

The game is scheduled for release this year, and as we approach the end of 2024, I speculate another delay this time around. Still, that doesn’t stop me from discussing how well it blends elements from my favorite games, such as Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry.

Out of every other release slated soon, Lost Souls Aside doesn’t have enough hype, and I want to change that. I’ll discuss the game’s strengths and what makes it so special compared to any other AAA action game release.

Why It Matters: Character-action fans have been looking for more releases in the genre, which is quite stale right now, and Lost Souls Aside is the perfect title for them.

Title Capable Of Rivaling Final Fantasy

lost souls aside game
Lost Souls Aside Stuns In Gameplay Footage

Lost Souls Aside is a hack-and-slash game that, in terms of combat, seems heavily inspired by Devil May Cry and has character models reminiscent of Final Fantasy.

Everything about the game is flashy in a good way. The action sequences in the game are incomprehensible, and I still couldn’t digest it all from the gameplay footage I’ve seen.

There is a huge variety of enemies, and being based in a science fiction world, the boss battles are unique and can rival FromSoftware’s innovation. Lost Souls Aside is one of the games I feel was perfectly translated from the developer’s vision to the actual game.

Even though I’ve learned to limit my expectations for game releases unless I have my hands on them from past experiences, I still can’t contain my excitement for this project. The game looks so good that it could even give Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or Stellar Blade a run for its money.

Aside from gameplay footage, less is known about the game and its plot. The main character looks quite like Noctis from Final Fantasy Rebirth and has somewhat of a companion alongside him.

The level design in this game is also huge, with multiple settings and environments and the opportunity to traverse via a hoverboard. Everything about Lost Souls Aside looks straight out of an anime.

The Story Behind Lost Souls Aside

The best part about Lost Souls Aside is the actual story behind the game’s development. The project development started off solo as a passion project by a developer named Yang Bing, built entirely on Unreal Engine 4.

The project was later picked by PlayStation, which decided to make it a PlayStation 4 exclusive, scheduled for a 2017 release. With a bigger development team, the developer studio Ultizero Games decided to make the project bigger, and now it is backed by PlayStation.

Hence, the scale of the project was increased, and it was now fully intended to translate Yang’s original intention with the game. Seven years later, Lost Souls Aside was given a release date of 2024 at Chinajoy 2023.

However, the year ends soon, and the game was not mentioned in the PlayStation’s State Of Play last month. If my guess is correct, Lost Souls Aside won’t be released before 2025.

The game is almost ready and is even rated by ESRB, so developer Ultizero is probably adding finishing touches and making up for the lack of PlayStation exclusives in 2025.

Anyhow, Lost Souls Aside is shaping up to be another massive Asian release that is overshadowing Western releases. Joining the likes of Black Myth: Wukong and Stellar Blade will bring diversity to the industry and raise the bar high for AAA games.

Sparking Zero Is Easily One of The Best Dragon Ball Games

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Ball Sparking Zero is exactly what fans wanted.
  • The game looks and plays great, coming with the same strengths as its beloved predecessors.
  • It also offers unparalleled attention to detail, making for a joy-filled experience for both new and old fans of the IP.

The Tenkaichi series has finally returned after a nearly two-decade-long slumber. Needless to say, such a revival came with a lot of weight, and the expectations for Dragon Ball Sparking Zero were through the roof.

As an avid fan who spent a fair amount of time on Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 3, Infinite World, and Shin Budokai, I had similarly high hopes, and I’m glad to report that Dragon Ball’s latest outing is a glorious return to form for the franchise.

In fact, I would argue it’s easily one of this IP’s best adaptations.

Why it matters: This Tenkaichi 3 successor has already sold over 3 million units and has become one of Bandai Namco’s highest-rated releases.

The Dream Tenkaichi Sequel

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero

As Dragon Ball fans would have you know, a sequel to Tenkaichi 3 had been requested for years upon years until 2023. This is exactly why the surprise announcement of Sparking Zero seemed like a fever dream for a while.

Fortunately, Spike Chunsoft has more than lived up to the expectations. Boot up this arena fighter, and you’ll be met with a bombastic intro that leads into an incredibly creative user interface rivalling the Naruto Storm series’ stylish menus.

This is where Sparking Zero makes a strong first impression, but these elements just scratch the surface of its greatness. Between the story mode, online battles, local gameplay, and custom battles, there’s plenty of content to keep enthusiasts engaged.

Fan-favorite attacks like the Kamehameha, Spirit Bomb, and Dragon Fist are all here and look better than ever, while characters also sport their signature transformations, including Goku’s Mastered Ultra Instinct form.

However, I would argue that the attention to detail is the real star of the show here. Each part of Sparking Zero serves as a love letter to the series, making it clear that this is a game made by the fans for the fans.

When playing through the various modes, you’ll find plenty of unique dialogue between characters, specific animations portraying iconic moments from the series, destruction on an epic scale, and all the exaggerated faces that the late Akira Toriyama’s franchise is known for.

Battles chock-full of references to the manga and anime are also brought to life by visuals that rival FighterZ and Kakarot at their best.

Spike Chunsoft has even included a slew of popular anime soundtracks, giving fans the option to duke it out as they listen to songs like We Were Angels, Blizzard, and Makafushigi Adventure.

Also worth mentioning are the what-if stories. I won’t go into too many details here to avoid spoilers, but these what-ifs alone make it worth sitting through the bland story mode.

Capturing The Dragon Ball Feel

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero
Goku’s Spirit Bomb Looks Better Than Ever | Image via Tech4Gamers

In terms of gameplay, Sparking Zero immediately felt familiar to me. Playing on classic controls gave me a running start, and it took just an hour or two for my Tenkaichi 3 muscle memory to kick in fully.

The 3D combat here is fast, fluid, and unpredictable enough to satisfy your Dragon Ball cravings. I always believed Tenkaichi 3 came the closest to emulating Dragon Ball’s frenetic nature, and it comes as no surprise that Sparking Zero is just as enticing as a simulation of the franchise.

Much like Tenkaichi 3, Sparking Zero presents a basic combo structure with various follow-ups, but a slew of defensive options like the revenge counter and super counter help add additional depth to the gameplay.

Beam struggles and other types of clashes also return, making for arguably the best moment-to-moment 3D combat in a Dragon Ball game. Much to my surprise, the online netode isn’t a complete letdown either, which is more than I can say for most other arena fighters.

If I had to point out one caveat, it would be the lack of impact in many of the basic rush attack animations. The soundtrack also leaves much to be desired, but nobody expected the game to be perfect, so I’m more than willing to look past these drawbacks.

 Future Potential

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero
The Game Can Live On For Years | Image via Tech4Gamers

Arena fighters have been in constant decline for many years. Following Naruto Storm’s recent downfall, I had almost begun to lose hope, but in typical shounen fashion, Sparking Zero saved the day right on time.

The stage is now set for Spike Chunsoft to go even further beyond.

Looking at Bandai Namco’s recent live-service efforts, I can see a huge list of DLC for Sparking Zero in the next few years. In fact, dataminers have already pointed to the likes of Beast Gohan joining the roster.
