Xbox Wants To Recreate Xbox 360 Glory Days With Game Pass

Story Highlight
  • Xbox had a great run in the gaming industry after releasing its second console.
  • Microsoft says that it hopes Game Pass can recreate that magic.
  • The next year is shaping up to be huge for the subscription service.

Microsoft’s gaming business was at its best during the days of the Xbox 360. More than 18 years later, fans look back on this console as one of the best in gaming history. Moreover, Xbox Live is considered the foundation of online gaming on consoles.

All of this began on the Xbox 360, and fans are still nostalgic for this console. According to Xbox, the team is hoping to recapture this magic soon.

Why it matters: After an incredible time in the industry, Xbox has struggled to find its footing over the last two generations. Since then, fans have been left with the memories of a better time for the brand.

Xbox Game Pass
Game Pass Is Set To Have Its Best Year In 2025

Aaron Greenberg, Xbox’s VP of Marketing, recently replied to a tweet that reflected on the history of the Xbox 360.

This tweet referred to what was considered the prime of online gaming on Xbox Live. Between Call of Duty and Halo’s success, this was the platform for online games on consoles.

Aaron Greenberg’s response acknowledged Xbox’s legacy during this period but also provided hope for the future. According to his statement, Game Pass is the new pillar of the business, much like Xbox Live.

We are trying to recreate that history again today with Game Pass.

The Xbox 360 Put Microsoft On The Map As A Formidable Gaming Giant

Microsoft’s subscription has gradually improved over the years, and 2025 is easily shaping up to be its biggest year. However, it would not be a lie to say that the gaming giant has seen its fair share of hurdles.

Recent price hikes, poor console sales, and underwhelming first-party releases have led to concern. Still, it is great to see executives like Aaron Greenberg optimistic for the future.

Microsoft has changed its priorities quite a bit since the days of the Xbox 360.

Fortunately, the company is still dedicated to providing memorable experiences that stick with players for years to come. This is why Aaron Greenberg remains hopeful that Game Pass can be the pillar of the brand moving forward.

Kai Cenat Streaming Bloodborne To Convince PlayStation For A Remake

Story Highlights
  • YouTuber Kai Cenat is currently streaming Bloodborne to convince Sony to do a remake.
  • Kai Cenat says that he has the power to convey the community’s message to the developers.
  • A Bloodborne remake for PS5 and PC is one of the most demanded games in recent years.

Fans have been demanding a Bloodborne remake for the longest time. It is one of those games Sony has ignored for quite some time since this exclusive didn’t even get a native PS5 version or a PC port despite being nine years old.

However, just like most of us, famous streamer Kai Cenat seems to love this FromSoftware title. He is currently streaming Bloodborne on Twitch to convince Sony for a remake.

Why it matters: Bloodborne is considered among the finest Souls-likes in existence. Fans have been disappointed that neither Sony nor FromSoftware have gotten back to the IP despite its popularity.

Bloodborne FromSoftware PS4 Sony Ps5
Bloodborne is still one of the most popular games from the last generation.

During his Steam, Cenat said that while he doesn’t have the power to force Sony into making the remaster or remake, he can certainly bring it to the attention of the Souls community, which could convince the company.

So, the least that I can do is, I’ll try to push the narrative for something to happen.

– Kai Cenat

Cenat also revealed that the developers at FromSoftware watch all his moves, which could make him an ideal candidate for the pitch. He addressed the developers and PlayStation, saying that Bloodborne is the most requested game for a remake and PC port.

Bloodborne
Kai Cenat has recently grown to enjoy FromSoftware’s titles.

Cenat has also done everything to make the stream as fun as possible. He has even gone as far as decorating his room with a Bloodborne theme and cosplaying as an in-game character. This could be a motivating push for the entire community.

Even Miyazaki himself admitted Bloodborne is one of his all-time favorite releases. Moreover, FromSoftware agrees with the fan demand.

While there’s a small chance PlayStation will listen to the community, fans hope Kai Cenat’s stream can be the beginning of something greater. It’s a shame the gaming giant has ignored this IP for so long.

Why We Didn’t Choose These CPU Coolers For The Ryzen 5 9600X

Because not every decent-performing CPU cooler meets all of our criteria, there are many CPU coolers we couldn’t add to this list. However, these are a few good matches with the Ryzen 5 9600X, which didn’t make the list:

  • Be Quiet! Pure Rock 2: The air cooler doesn’t provide enough cooling for adequate overclocking capabilities compared to its competition at the same price range.
  • Enermax ADV Aquafusion 360: The AIO cooler’s aesthetics aren’t on par with others within its price range.

Benchmarks Of The Best CPU Cooler For The Ryzen 5 9600X

To best understand which CPU cooler is perfect for your use case scenario, you should have results from real-time tests. Therefore, we have conducted several tests with the Ryzen 5 9600X and have compiled our findings in the following chart below:

Key Cooling Terms To Look Out For

  • CFM: Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) measures the volume of air a fan moves in a minute. Higher CFM values generally mean better cooling performance.
  • RPM: Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) tells you how fast a fan spins. Higher RPM means more airflow, which enhances cooling but can also increase noise levels.
  • Radiator: Radiators use water to cool the CPU. They have tightly packed fins, and attached fans expel the heat. As liquid carries heat from the CPU and flows through the radiator, the attached fans blow air to cool it down, this process continues in a loop.
  • FPI: Fins Per Inch (FPI) refers to the density of fins in a heatsink. More fins improve cooling by increasing air contact but can make radiators and coolers thicker, potentially causing clearance issues.
  • Heatsink: Heatsinks disperse heat from your CPU, pushing hot air out of the PC case.
  • TDP: For CPUs, TDP measures the heat output. For coolers, it indicates how much heat they can handle. A cooler’s TDP should exceed the CPU’s for optimal performance.

My Testing Strategy To Find The Best Coolers

Apart from focusing on just the thermal benchmarks, I also emphasized a lot on these features before making my recommendations:

  • Cooling Performance: To make sure the cooler prevents thermal throttling and offers good overclocking potential, I focused on its airflow, heat dissipation, and fan specs. Of course, these translate to good thermal performance.
  • Acoustic Performance: I checked how noisy the cooler was by listening to the fans and pump. For air coolers, only the fan noise mattered.
  • Compatibility: After picking a cooler, I made sure it was compatible with my system. This means checking for any RAM clearance issues with air coolers and radiator clearance issues with AIOs.
  • Build Quality: The durability of the cooler was important to me, so I examined the materials used, the construction of its components, and its overall sturdiness. This includes making sure the fins were not bent out of the box.

Nvidia Reportedly Set To Discontinue GeForce RTX 3060 Production

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia has informed companies like Colorful and Palit that they can place final orders for the RTX 3060 series.
  • The GeForce RTX 3060, introduced in February 2021, is highly popular among gamers, holding a 5.9% share in the Steam survey.
  • The market effects of discontinuing the RTX 3060 will be gradual, taking months to manifest.

Board Channels has reported that Nvidia has notified them that this is the final chance to order the RTX 3060 series. It has been reported that companies such as Colorful and Palit were informed that they could place their last orders for supplies for this specific GPU.

Why it matters: The GeForce RTX 3060 is among the most used GPUs on the market, and it was introduced in February 2021. Steam Survey results indicate that gamers have a special preference for this graphics card, which currently holds a 5.9% share.

Nvidia Is Set To Discontinue Its Best-Selling GPU

The GeForce RTX 3060 has gained so much attention because of its extra video memory size.

With 12 GB of VRAM, it offers the best of both worlds, especially at 1080p resolution. These perks came at the affordable MSRP of $330, making this graphics card a solid choice for mid-range gaming.

Meanwhile, Nvidia released a 12GB version of the GeForce RTX 2060 and a cheaper 8GB version of GeForce RTX 3060 later on. None of them had as much impact on the market.

That being said, this decision will probably take some time to impact the market. Since graphics cards are shipped in batches, it will take months for the company to complete the final order.

In the meantime, Nvidia will continue to send orders to partners, who will then deliver the cards to retailers.

It can be argued that the GeForce RTX 3060 is a better option than its successor. The GeForce RTX 4060 comes with just 8GB of memory and a smaller memory bus that can prove to be a handicap in many situations.

The GeForce RTX 5060 is also more than a year away, so this graphics card could leave a major gap in the market. Fortunately, AMD has several great alternatives available at a similar price.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Is Still A Steal Despite The Price Hike

Story Highlight
  • Fans have been highly concerned about Microsoft’s recent Xbox Game Pass price hike.
  • I still think that the service has a lot of value to offer, even if the price is now higher than before.
  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate remains a steal as it still offers day-one AAA releases that would otherwise cost $70.

Fans have been stressing a lot over the Game Pass price hike recently. It was pretty much obvious that Call of Duty coming to the subscription service would have its consequences. Still, nobody saw it coming, even though the writing was on the wall.

In my opinion, fans shouldn’t worry, as Game Pass Ultimate is still a solid deal. It costs $19.99/month, which is not too bad for a service that brings you day-one AAA games and a massive catalog of existing titles. Even after the price hike, I think the service is a steal.

Why it matters: Fans rushed over to CDKeys as soon as they heard that a price hike was coming. In my opinion, there’s reason to still consider the service despite the new price.

Ultimate Tier Still A Great Deal

Xbox Game Pass Tier System
The Ultimate Tier For $19.99/month is Totally Justified Due To Its Perks

Xbox has already been hinting that all tiers will not get similar treatment. It was previously revealed that Black Ops 6 wouldn’t be fully playable on each tier. To fully enjoy Black Ops 6, you must get the Ultimate tier, which costs $20/month.

Also, you won’t be getting day one releases on every tier, so if you want to play AAA releases on day one, you would have to go for the Ultimate tier or pay full price for the game. The previous Xbox showcase featured around 30 games, 18 of which are coming to Game Pass.

If you ask me, this is still an absolutely crazy deal. Do you think PlayStation can do a similar thing? Because I don’t. PlayStation releases its AAA titles on PS Plus after a long time, and its monthly offerings are not nearly as great. PS Plus Premium also costs $18 a month.

On the other hand, Game Pass Ultimate offers many more benefits to consumers. Besides the day-one titles, you get a huge catalog that is already available on the service. Moreover, cloud gaming and access to EA Play are other huge perks.

With Modern Warfare 3 now on the service, you’re getting one of the biggest multiplayer titles at no additional cost. This is something that’s never happened before and highlights why the service is such a great deal.

Fans Are Concerned Over Nothing

Call of Duty Xbox Game Pass
The Subscription Service Is Worth More Thanks To Call of Duty

Price hikes in the industry are never welcome, and I completely agree. Everything is seemingly getting more expensive, but technology has also made significant strides in recent years. Alan Wake 2 and Hellblade 2 are recent examples of this.

These titles show impeccable production values, but this comes at a cost. Because of the new tiers, the subscription’s value may not be immediately apparent. The FTC may think Game Pass has been degraded, but I disagree.

Game Pass Standard is designed for the average Call of Duty and Fifa player who spends most of his time on just a few titles throughout the year. In addition to multiplayer access, Microsoft throws in a huge catalog of games as an added benefit.

Sure, it’s a shame Game Pass Standard subscribers don’t get day-one titles, but everything that is already included should not be taken lightly. Even the $18 PS Plus Premium offers a similar value proposition.

As for Game Pass Ultimate, its value speaks for itself. You won’t find this type of service anywhere else, and things will only get better from here.

The Future Is Even More Promising

Xbox Games Showcase 2024 Ft
Tons of Games Revealed At Xbox Games Showcase 2024 At Coming To Game Pass Ultimate On Day One

The previous Xbox Showcase featured many great games, and a huge chunk of those will be available on the subscription service from day one. Imagine gaining access to Doom: The Dark Ages, Fable, next year’s Call of Duty, and more for just $20/month. I’m already sold.

Gamescom will be another major event that comes with various big reveals. At the same time, Xbox will continue to offer big third-party releases on the service that allow users to extract further value.

The same service gave us gems like Lies of P last year and Persona 3 Reload in 2024 at no additional cost. I have no doubt that this trend will continue in 2025. Analysts believe more price hikes are also coming, but for now, I’m content with everything Xbox is doing.

Larian Already Had A Playable Baldur’s Gate 4 Build Before It Was Cancelled

Story Highlight
  • Baldu’s Gate 3 became so successful that fans were hoping for a sequel.
  • However, Larian cancelled the sequel because it would have taken a long time to develop.
  • Baldur’s Gate 4 was already in a partially playable state before the developer decided to scrap it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was the main highlight of 2023, as it won the most prestigious awards and dominated the industry. The game won so many awards that the developer had to attend many ceremonies, which disrupted the development.

Of course, fans would expect a sequel for a release of this caliber of success. Unfortunately, the sequel was scrapped. Now, it has been revealed that Baldur’s Gate 4 was in a playable state before Larian Studios cancelled it.

Why it matters: Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold well over 15 million copies, and it has been exactly one year since it was released, so a massive fandom wanted a sequel.

Baldur's Gate 3
Larian Scrapped The Sequel To Baldur’s Gate 3 Because It Would Have Taken A Long Time To Develop

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke claimed that a project involving Baldur’s Gate was in development before the team moved on from the IP. He also revealed that it was in a playable state.

You could already play stuff. But you played it, and you know, this is OK.

-Swen Vincke

He revealed in the interview that fans would have liked the follow-up to Baldur’s Gate 3. Swen Vincke seemed to have a lot of faith in the project, so it was surprising to see the team suddenly moving on.

According to Vincke, the team wasn’t extraordinarily impressed after playing Baldur’s Gate 4. They would’ve redone the game several times, leading to several long years of development.

Vincke further explained that this playable project was first meant to be a DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, which was later turned into Baldur’s Gate 4. However, the team didn’t want to work on something like this for multiple years, so it was scrapped.

When this project was scrapped, the developers were actually delighted, as Larian Studios’ policy is to work on something that the team can feel excited about. This is one of the reasons Baldur’s Gate 3 was such a huge hit.

Moreover, the team has already begun work on its next project. It is also planning multiple IPs for now, with plans extending till the next generation of consoles. Therefore, while Baldur’s Gate 4 may have been cancelled, fans have plenty to look forward to.

Why Are So Few Games Set In Modern Times

Story Highlight
  • The time period of most games is the distant past or future, with a handful being set in modern times.
  • Games set in modern times quickly become outdated, with some references to the present being unsavory for people playing in the future.
  • Games with extravagant time periods have more character and atmosphere, which is why most developers incorporate them into their projects.

We all have played games that are set in some dystopian future or a medieval fantasy setting, but the frequency of games being released with a modern timeline is surprisingly low. Read along to see our reasons for why this is so!

The Exceptions

Watch Dogs Gritty

Of course, there are a few exceptions to this claim of few games being set in modern times. One of the most popular game franchises of all time, Grand Theft Auto, has been set in a time period close to its release date

Other games, like WatchDogs and Heavy Rain, are also set close to modern times. But that’s beside the point. What we’re claiming today is that there are few games set in current times, not none at all.

The Reasons

In this part of the article, we will explore the reasons why we believe that games set in different periods are more desirable to both market and play.

Becoming Outdated

It’s a well-known fact that games set in the modern day can become outdated within a few years as trends and changes rapidly occur. This can have both positive and negative impacts on the game.

Infamous 2
Infamous Second Son (Image By Tech4Gamers)

On one hand, it can invoke nostalgia for players as they revisit a past era of their lives. On the other hand, it may alienate younger gamers who find the trends of that time cringe-worthy or embarrassing.

Games set in the distant future or a mystical past are more timeless, as the setting feels like it is showing something new and exciting to the user instead of something that people might have experienced firsthand.

Not The Focus

Even when games like Marvel’s Spiderman and It Takes Two are set in modern times, their focus is never on the time period. While games like The Order 1886 can use their historical setting as legs to stand on, modern games have to add in some mystical and engaging aspects that draw away from it.

MJ And Peter Texting (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Let’s take the game mentioned above as an example. The first Spider-Man tells the story of Peter balancing his life between being an average Joe and a superhero.

There are some sprinkles of utilizing the period to help tell its story (MJ and Peter’s texts come to mind), but it is rare to see an integration of a game’s modern setting as well as Spiderman did for a brief scene. Most of the game is distracting from the mundanity of modern times to show fantastical superheroes brawling it out.

Less Character

Dark Souls, Skyrim, and Cyberpunk 2077, what do they all have in common? An oozing atmosphere. We have reasons to believe that this atmosphere stems from the fact that their worlds are so different from ours, yet they feel so complete.

There are countless examples where the medieval setting, a dystopian future, or the wild-west makes games feel more exciting and explorable. The same could not be said for games set in modern times.

The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim

There is something about a tavern that makes it more exciting to explore than a bar, something about a Victorian pathway that makes it feel more intriguing to peek around than a modern alleyway. I can’t put into words the charm oozing out of a game set a millennia ago compared to something that is more modern.

To put it simply, we romanticize the past and are excited by the prospect of a future, which makes the present seem more dull by comparison.

The Verdict

Games set in the future or past are more marketable because the present seems less exciting. However, media set in the present can be compelling, too. For example, “Synecdoche, New York” is a favorite of mine for its existential take on the present.

I hope a game will someday capture that same magic. Given the rapid growth of gaming, I’m confident we’ll eventually see an engaging game set in our mundane modern-day.

Pirating Games Might Not Always Be Unethical

Story Highlight
  • Piracy creates financial problems for the developers who work hard to make games, and it is also illegal.
  • There are some scenarios where piracy might be okay, for example, when a game is unavailable and cannot be purchased.
  • Piracy is generally unethical and discouraged, but it will continue among those who cannot afford games or prefer pirating over purchasing.

Video game piracy is often condemned as unethical, and rightfully so for most scenarios. It seems hard to justify essentially stealing a team’s product that they have worked hard on for years, but we’d argue that we can in some scenarios.

The Harm Brough About

There is a lot of harm that comes about with video game piracy. You’d think that the developer would be paying the price of their video games being pirated, but there are some consequences for the people pirating as well.

Piracy is illegal, and if you’re caught you could be charged with fines depending on the extent of the crime, as well as the jurisdiction you’re under. There is also a chance that if somehow a gaming platform like Epic or Steam catches onto an illegal copy of a game, you’ll be banned from using it.

Pirating games discourages developers by reducing their financial incentives. Many people work hard to create these games, so it’s unfair to pirate them if you can afford to buy them.

When It’s (Potentially) Okay

With our disclaimer on the negatives, let’s look at the “acceptable” scenarios for pirating games!

Regional Pricing

Regional pricing has played a huge part in reducing piracy in less privileged areas. In some areas, the $60-$70 that a new AAA game sells for is a substantial portion of their income, but most games are priced much lower in these areas.

That being said, if games hold that price even in lower development parts of the world, the gamers of that area might look towards pirating to play those super-expensive games.

Forza Price

If you cannot buy a game, I feel it’s okay to experience it by pirating. I mean, you’d never be able to buy it anyway, so is pirating not the same as just not playing it?

I would like to emphasize that this only applies when you actually can not afford to buy these games. If you have the budget and you do it anyway, then it is unethical to do so.

Abandonware

There are a lot of games that are not sold anymore, and they provide no revenue for the companies that sell them. These games, and pieces in general, are called abandonware

Midtown Madness Isn't Being Sold Anymore
Midtown Madness Is Abandonware (Image By Tech4Gamers)

If these games won’t make the company any money by “buying” them, it is completely okay to download them off a pirated site. In this scenario, buying the game wouldn’t do anyone any good, so you might as well indulge.

Emulation

If you’re a fan of emulating old game consoles, there is almost no way to legally get those games, at least if you want to play them on a PC. Downloading games off pirating sites for emulation purposes is fine, as they also fall into the abandonware we discussed a moment ago.

EarthBound
EarthBound Isn’t Making Anyone Any Money (Image From Wikipedia)

It is important to point out real-world examples of doing this the wrong way, like how Nintendo sued two people because of Switch emulation/piracy(essentially making it popular on the platform).

The Switch is a recent console, and if you want to play Switch games, you should buy a Switch, but emulating GameBoy, N64, or PS2 games is mostly fine and consequence-free, both legally and ethically.

Does NOT Always Apply

Because of the controversial nature of this article, I have to be explicit in saying that piracy is nothing that I condone or support, nor am I encouraging anyone to pirate games. That being said, some circumstances do make it more justifiable than others.

That being said, the people who buy games will continue buying them legally, and the people who pirate games will continue to do so, with very little changing either side over. Things like regional pricing have made gaming more accessible to people who wouldn’t be able to buy them, but both communities are more or less set in stone.

Celeste Is Hard For A Reason

Story Highlight
  • Celeste’s difficulty is a core design choice that enhances player engagement and mirrors the protagonist’s struggles, making the narrative more impactful.
  • The game balances its challenging gameplay with fairness through systems like Assist Mode, ensuring accessibility for all players.
  • The seamless, fast-paced gameplay loop encourages perseverance, making each victory feel hard-earned and deeply rewarding.

Celeste is one of the most beloved indie platformers of the last decade, and for good reason. It combines excellent gameplay with a gripping story, but its difficulty is one of the game’s most notorious features. Stay with us as we explore why this difficulty is justified and elevates Celeste’s gameplay experience!

Development

Celeste Team
The Celeste Team (Image From Wikipedia)

Maddy Thorson, the visionary behind the story of Celeste, has admitted outright that making the game challenging was a core part of the development:

In Celeste, we try to gently push the player to do things that they thought was impossible for them” -From Vice

However, along with difficulty, fairness was also a key part of the development. The game developers recognized that every player’s capability is different, which is why they have many systems like the Assist Mode that help players play the game.

Why It Works

The subsequent sections will explore how Celeste integrates its difficulty well into its gameplay to garner engagement and make the narrative more realistic.

Narrative

Celeste’s narrative is straightforward: Madeline, driven by a need for change, aims to climb Celeste Mountain. Throughout her journey, she battles self-doubt, with a part of her insisting she’s not capable of achieving her goal.

Climbing Celeste Mountain is also supposed to be an extraordinary feat in the game’s story, which is why it is filled with tricky platforming.

Seek Help Lady
This Part Cracks Me Up (Image By Tech4Gamers)

The game wants to translate these hardships from Madeline to you, the player. It wants you to feel the struggle that she’s feeling, where sometimes it feels like the task at hand is unsurmountable, but sooner or later, you have to do it.

The game dealing with the anxiety and borderline depression of Madeline and the hardships that come with it translates well to the gameplay.

Engagement

Celeste’s fast-paced gameplay is complimented by its difficulty. You need to always be on the move to avoid platforms collapsing or colliding with something you don’t want to touch, and most people have to lose a couple of times at each level to know what’s next.

The gameplay loop of traversing half a level, losing because of something unexpected, and starting over with the knowledge is very entertaining, especially with how small each level is.

Celeste Gameplay

It is also important to notice how Celeste has no loading screens; as soon as you die, you’re almost instantaneously placed at the start of the level, which allows you to try again instantly instead of being deterred by a loading screen that takes a few seconds.

As an enjoyer of hard games like the Souls series, I’m often frustrated with how discouraging the games feel at times, with a load screen followed by an elevator followed by a long walk to reach the boss again, but Celeste’s approach makes me want to jump in again immediately.

Encouragement

One of the best moments in the game is right at the start when Madeline is traversing a bridge that is falling from under her feet. No matter how fast you go, the end of the bridge collapses, leaving you falling to your doom.

When you think you’ve lost, a character comes and tells you how to dash, allowing you to get to safety. After this encounter, both you and Madeline are shaking, but the game pans to the sky at that moment and tells you:

You Can Do This.

You can do this celeste
I Was Sold At This Moment (Image By Tech4Gamers)

If the game was easy and the challenges were achievable, the game’s encouragement would feel worthless, but it doesn’t. The encouragement drives you forward to overcome these challenges, and that feeling, compounded by the story, drives home how this game is so special.

Celeste Wants You To Win

Celeste encourages players to win, with the developers and characters supporting you throughout. Despite its difficulty, Celeste’s story of triumph over adversity is uniquely powerful. The fairness of the difficulty drove me to an experience like no other, and I would recommend everyone playing it to give it a try.

When Should You Actually Upgrade Your PSU?

Story Highlight
  • Consider replacing your PSU once it surpasses its warranty period (usually 5-10 years) or if it shows signs of instability like random shutdowns.
  • Frequent blue screens, performance dips, and unusual noises indicate a failing PSU that needs an upgrade.
  • After upgrading or adding new components, ensure your PSU can handle the increased wattage to avoid system instability.

Most people think there’s nothing glamorous about power supplies and love bragging about their CPUs, GPUs, and motherboards. But you know what? Power supplies are one of the most essential parts of your PC build. If your power supply isn’t working well, your system will perform terribly and, in some cases, might even blow up your system.

Most of us go a long time without checking the PSU and without thinking about whether to upgrade or replace it. If you want to upgrade your PC or are satisfied with your current setup, you must know when to upgrade your power supply.

Aging Is A Critical Factor

PSUs come with a warranty period, usually 5-10 years. Once the warranty period is over, it is often time to consider a replacement or upgrade. I don’t mean to say that you should immediately upgrade your PSU because PSUs can usually last longer than their warranty periods if correctly cared for, avoiding overloads, keeping it clean, and preventing physical harm.

If your PSU is over 5 years old and you notice your system randomly shutting down or restarting, it’s a clear sign that it might fail. Upgrading to a new, reliable PSU can restore stability and protect your components from damage.

Failing PSU Might Need Upgradation

Following are some clear indications that you need to upgrade your power supply as your current power supply is failing to meet the power demands of your PC components.

  1. Suppose you notice blue screens on your monitor start to appear more often while you are gaming or doing intensive work on your PC.
  2. You start to hear noises from your PSU.
  3. Performance dips in your gaming or other experiences.

Failure of components inside the PSU should also trigger you to buy a new PSU. This failure usually occurs due to the usage of cheap power supplies. A cheap power supply may not blow up your PC components, but its components, like rectifiers or capacitors, can fail earlier, failing your PSU.

Insufficient Power For New Components

After a PC is upgraded or new components are added, your power supply may not provide enough wattage to power all the components in your computer effectively. To test your power supply, load up a CPU/GPU-intensive program while simultaneously powering on as many devices as possible in your PC. If everything works correctly and no errors occur, your current power supply is likely fine for your current power draw needs. If you encounter problems under high load with multiple devices running, it might be time for a power supply upgrade.

Given the number of CPU and GPU combinations, calculating the exact wattage you might require is challenging; however, I’d recommend using our PSU Calculator tool to check whether an upgrade is necessary for your current specifications.

For instance, if you have a Ryzen 7 7700X with a 105-watt TDP and an RTX 2080 Ti with a 250-watt TDP, then a 600-watt PSU is good enough for you. Now, if you want to upgrade your GPU to, let’s say, NVIDIA RTX 4090 with a power rating of 450watts, then you will need to upgrade from your 600-watt PSU to almost an 800-watt plus PSU like Corsair RM850e Gold ATX 3.0 to compensate for this power demand. However, if you replace your RTX 2080 Ti with RTX 3080 Ti (having a TDP rating of 250 watts), your 600-watt PSU will be sufficient for your setup.

So When Should You Actually Upgrade?

At the end of the day, it’s better to be safe than sorry. While a PSU has a longer life than other PC components, that doesn’t mean you should take your eyes off it. You don’t want your PSU to fail while you are gaming or whatever else you are doing.

Your PSU is the source of power for all your PC components; therefore, no matter how expensive and high-tech equipment you possess, your PC will not perform well if you don’t have a good PSU with enough power supply rating for your PSU. So, stay proactive and upgrade your PSU when required.

Why Your Computer Shocks You (Literally)

Story Highlight
  • If you suddenly get a shock when you hold a component (like your RAM or hard drive) while building your PC, it’s called a static discharge, which can kill the component.
  • To prevent static discharges, wear an antistatic wristband or occasionally touch a metal while building your PC.
  • If you feel a continuous “tingle” when you touch your running PC, the problem could be a bad outlet or a grounding issue in your home.
  • Try a different power cable or outlet. If that doesn’t fix it, contact your electrician for an inspection of your home’s internal wiring.

Have you ever been electrocuted while building your PC or simply while touching your PC case? Me too. While the amount of shock may be something you can ignore, it can be life-threatening to your PC and you, so it’s best to get to the bottom of it and fix it. Of course, you need to understand how it happens, so let’s get into it.

Why Your Computer Shocks You

Most likely, it’s one of two reasons that your PC is electrocuting you.

Static Discharge

While building your PC, you may encounter static discharge. This happens when the positive and negative charges around you are not balanced, creating a net charge in your environment. This charge can travel from your body to a component, like the RAM, and that’s when you feel a sudden shock.

A static discharge like this could kill your components (albeit rarely) but is harmless to you.

Improper Grounding

In the case of improper grounding, you might feel a continuous tingle when you touch your computer while it’s running. The problem could be a bad power outlet (in which case you want to try a different outlet) or a bad power cable (try a new cable). If these two don’t fix it, then the problem is an internal wiring issue in your home, meaning that any excessive current is not effectively reaching the ground where it can be displaced.

XPG Invader PC case
If your PC case is giving a constant shock, it’s probably a grounding issue (Image by Tech4Gamers)

In that case, you should immediately contact your electrician since this will cause current leakage into your chassis, which can be dangerous for you and your components.

How To Protect Yourself

Although a typical static discharge cannot harm you, it can harm your components. Thus, it’s best to use a wired. You can also occasionally touch a metal (like the metal part of your case) to remove the charge safely.

As for a grounding problem, you’ll need to contact your electrician and have them take a look. A leaking current needs somewhere to go, which could be your PC (or any other appliance in your home), potentially frying all your components in the process.

A Static Discharge Is Common, But Watch Out For Improper Grounding!

Drevo Tyrfing V2 keyboard
Metallic peripherals like this aluminium-built keyboard can also shock you (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Static discharges are a common occurrence, but you can lower the amount of static electricity by increasing humidity in your environment. It’s also best not to build your PC while standing on a carpet, as carpets build up static electricity. The most convenient fix is to use an antistatic wristband, though.

Improper grounding can be highly dangerous, though. It can leak excessive current into your PC, which can kill your system and is dangerous for you, too. If it’s a bad outlet, replacing it or using a different cable will do the job. But if that doesn’t fix it, the problem could be with the internal wiring in your home. In case of voltage surges or thunderstorms, your PC and electrical appliances can die in a heartbeat, so contact an electrician at the first sign!
