Is Snap Tap Basically Just Cheating? Here’s What I Think

Story Highlight
  • Snap Tap is a keyboard feature that allows players to counter-strafe without mastering a certain movement pattern.
  • The community is divided and continues to debate on the matter.
  • Razer has already taken feedback from tournament organizers and received a green signal from them regarding this feature.

Razer’s launch of its new Snap Tap feature is generating much buzz these days. The internet is divided on whether to call it cheating or a hardware feature innovation. Before that, let me explain what Snap Tap is:

What is Snap Tap?

When playing First-Person Shooters such as CS2, Overwatch, and Valorant, you strafe and shoot to gain an advantage over your enemies. To strafe, you need to press the left-right movement keys, usually A and D.

You have to fully release one directional button before you press the other one. Pro and high-level players have mastered this movement pattern to get close to perfect counter-strafing movement, to make it difficult for their opponents to hit them.

Razer has come up with this innovation on the hardware level along with Wooting which allows players to counter-strafe with little to no effort. You don’t need to release one movement key and all you need to do is rapidly tap either A or D to mimic the high-level movement that pro players use so frequently.

This is known as the Simultaneous Opossing Cardinal Directions (SOCD) phenomenon. Like Razer, Wooting has also integrated this feature into its latest keyboard firmware.

Wooting’s version of Snap Tap is Rappy Snappy. It uses Wooting’s Hall effect switches and gauges the pressure on the keys, which is a little different from Razer’s Snap Tap. Initially, Wooting was against the Snap Tap (Last input SOCD), but after conducting an online vote, it’s offering both options for its keyboards.

The Community’s Reaction

After the launch of the SOCD, it has been receiving mixed reviews. Some say it’s fine, while others don’t.

Popular YouTuber Optimum has come up with a video where he is explaining how movement looks on a normal keyboard and a SOCD one. He is claiming that using a Keyboard with this feature in its firmware is cheating

Counter-Strike 2 pro player ropz shares Optimum’s view and has tweeted on X:

Shouldn’t be allowed. Nice work but this is a bit too much, literally a macro/script, otherwise known as null binds.

Null binds are used in PC gaming as a workaround to mastering the counter-strafing movement. They are assigned to keyboards as a part of a script that you load into the game to prevent you from pressing two opposing directional keys.

These Null binds are banned in tournaments and Razer’s senior Esports manager has been quick to respond to ropz tweet with his tweet stating that the company had already reached out to tournament owners before releasing this feature.

I checked out other threads on the topic and the debate seems to be going in with full effect over there as well.

User absvny3t, who started a thread on the topic at the HLTV forum, states that Snap Tap isn’t cheating; it’s just Razer’s marketing tactics. He further says:

Honestly the only reason keyboard firmware hasn’t been doing this for years is because manufacturers make insane profit from gamers and geekhack-style keyboard hobbyists they usually don’t have to improve the functionality in any way.

User fpsBonkers shares his own two cents on the topic, stating that perfect play is a myth and it comes down to input vs output when it comes to gaming. Having bad hardware is an unfair advantage but having the software do the work for you is a form of cheating.

Here’s What I Think

Wooting 60HE+ - Build Quality

Whatever the case, this feature will continue to generate buzz, and people will continue to debate on the topic for some time. I think that it’s an unfair advantage to people who will buy these keyboards and use them in online multiplayer against people who don’t have them.

Razer has already reached out to tournament organizers and taken their feedback beforehand. If they don’t have a problem with it, then I think it’s fine. Also in pro tournaments the playing field will be leveled out as everybody gets to be on the same hardware and it will be more of a game of skill just like it already is.

I Always Avoid Purchasing Limited Edition Peripherals – Here’s Why

Story Highlight
  • The limited edition peripherals are always priced higher than their standard edition counterparts.
  • Finding a replacement part is hard in case something breaks or stops working.
  • Reselling limited edition peripherals is kind of difficult, as not everyone is fond of such stuff.

This limited edition trend is nothing new and has been around for so long now. I have seen countless collaborations that result in limited edition peripherals, and to be honest, most of the time, those limited edition peripherals look so tempting.

The artwork on these and some special features that they offer do appear impressive. However, I always prefer to avoid them and pick their standard editions instead.

What are These Limited Edition Peripherals

The limited edition peripherals are basically the same, just with some extra work done on them in collaboration or without collaboration with another company. Two entirely different companies collaborate with each other to bring out limited editions of their products.

These limited edition units are usually made in limited quantities and have custom artwork done onto them, as well as some distinct features the standard edition units don’t come with. From mice, keyboards, and headsets, to consoles, every peripheral and hardware has a limited edition available in the current time.

The Limited Edition Crosshair 16 HX Laptop from MSI is a great example of such a product, as it’s made in collaboration with Capcom.

Reasons Why I Avoid Picking One

Although these aren’t universal facts but rather my personal take, it’s fine if you disagree with my reasoning and prefer to do otherwise.

Far from Being Pocket-Friendly

The first thing I don’t like is the higher price tag these limited edition peripherals come with. Sure, they have some eye-pleasing artwork or some extra features, however, they do not play a significant role in day-to-day use cases. Here’s a graph with a few examples of price differences between standard and limited-edition peripherals.

Standard Vs Limited Edition Peripherals (Image credit: Tech4Gamers)
Standard Vs Limited Edition Peripherals (Image credit: Tech4Gamers)

The price difference depends on the kind of peripheral it is and what it is offering in exchange for the extra premium we are being charged. For instance, the standard edition of SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Prebuilt keyboard costs around $219.99 while its White Gold limited edition comes at around $379.99.

The disparity in price becomes even more evident when two parties are involved, like the HYTE x Hololive Mori Calliope Y40 Bundle. This chassis bundle has an MSRP of $350, while its standard edition is only $130. The extra aesthetics do not excite me enough, and I would spend it on something else that is actually worth it.

Replacement Parts aren’t An Easy Find

Another reason that stops me from picking limited edition peripherals is the replacement parts that they might need in the future if I end up breaking something or it stops working itself.

Since these limited editions aren’t widely available, so finding their exact replacement parts can be a bit of a stretch. Sure, we can use the parts of standard edition peripherals, but it will ruin the entire look alongside its worth.

Reselling Becomes a Hassle

I’m pretty sure there are many people out there who love to upgrade their setup after a short while, and I’m one of them, too. So, I always prefer something that can be sold easily later on and gives back a decent chunk of money.

This is a problem with limited edition stuff, they depreciate quite a bit in most instances. This means, for someone like me, it’s not worth it as the amount I will get after selling isn’t going to be decent. Moreover, finding the right buyer is a challenge in itself, too, because buying and collecting limited edition stuff is a niche thing.

I Just Don’t Prefer the Hassle and Added Risk

A lot of folks will surely agree with my points, and many will disagree too. However, that’s fine, because to some these things don’t matter much due to numerous factors. But to me personally, it does, as I don’t like to lose a lot of money on my peripherals and other hardware when I plan to sell it. Similarly, the added risk and hassle just isn’t my cup of tea.

Are Chromebooks Worth Purchasing In 2024

Story Highlight
  • Chromebooks have evolved so much over the past few years and are now capable of being a daily driver.
  • The battery life is one of the best on these, even on the cheapest side.
  • The OS is super straightforward and fast, making it ideal for many.

Chromebooks, although not very good in their early days, are one of the most talked-about and chosen computers for so many people. And yes, that includes me too. I’ve recently gotten the chance to try ChromeOS, which is the primary OS on these Chromebooks instead of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

What’s A Chromebook Anyway

For those uninitiated, a Chromebook is essentially a laptop like any other. But what makes it different is its operating system. Chromebooks do not use Windows or macOS; instead, they use Google’s very own ChromeOS, which is built using Linux. The OS is so light that it doesn’t require too much hardware for its operation.

Chromebook offers minimal and basic stuff to work with, like the Chrome browser. Which is like the main portal to everything for Chromebook users. Everything you want to use is accessible through it (their web versions, to be specific). Whether it’s work-related software or entertainment sites like YouTube, Netflix, and plenty more.

Google Pixelbook Go Chromebook
Google Pixelbook Go Chromebook

Moreover, Google has also added Play Store support to its Chromebooks, which is great, but this feature is still a work in progress, and not all the Android apps work perfectly on it yet.

Not to mention, Chromebooks aren’t all about having the best hardware inside of them because they don’t need one either. The cheapest Chromebooks, which are between $150 and $200 MSRP, boast something like 4/8 GB of memory with 32 to 64 GB of eMMC-type storage and an Intel Celeron or Pentium processor.

Since they have evolved a lot, now they do come in the premium category as well. Chromebooks in this category use around 16 GB of memory with up to 256 GB or more for the SSD storage side of things and an Intel Core i7 as their processor unit. While all of that sounds fancy, their prices also go as high as $800–$900.

Great As A Daily Driver

A Chromebook offers everything one requires daily, whether it is for work or entertainment. Chromebook has full Google Workspace support as well as support for the Android versions of the Microsoft Office suite, which includes MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. You can also enjoy social media, movies, and TV shows without having to invest in a more expensive Windows laptop. Every basic task you need to do daily can be done using just your Chromebook.

MS Office Apps on Chromebook (Image credit: Office Watch)
MS Office Apps on Chromebook (Image credit: Office Watch)

Besides this, you can also do a little more on these, and by a little extra, I mean 3D modeling and coding. For coding, you can use Replit, which is a cloud-based coding platform. Furthermore, as far as 3D modeling is concerned, you can easily enable the Linux environment in the settings and install Blender through a Linux-based app store. These were some additional perks that I wanted to highlight, as I personally tested them and found them impressive.

It Lasts Way Longer

Another great thing about Chromebooks is their excellent battery backup. It’s a well-known feature of these laptops. A Chromebook usually lasts 6–8 hours and is used mostly by Google Workspace applications, social media, and OTT platforms. Whereas a Windows laptop would last 3–4 hours maximum if you’re lucky enough. All thanks to the power-hungry Windows OS and hardware.

Next-Level Portability

Chromebooks are typically more portable than laptops as well. This is due to the fact that they do not have much hardware in them and a lightweight OS, which helps them get trimmed down more than a traditional Windows laptop. Chromebooks also come in a 2-in-1 form factor, meaning you can use them as a tablet or a laptop, depending on personal preferences.

Samsung Chromebook
Samsung Chromebook

Perfect Fit For Casuals

Having limited functionality to offer, Chromebooks are quite straightforward to use. This makes them a perfect fit for casuals who do not possess tech knowledge, like school kids, teens, and even old folks. All of them can use a Chromebook quite conveniently. Also, if they’re into games, that is possible via cloud gaming services such as GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming, as they are now supported on Chromebooks.

They Are Very Much Worth It

Keeping all the advancements and efforts put in to make the Chromebooks what they are today. I would say it was all worth it, as we got another rivalry alongside the Windows laptops and MacBooks in the basic daily driver space. A sub $400 to $500 Chromebook like Acer Chromebook Plus 515 or HP Chromebook Plus x360 is pretty much everything you need in 2024 to get your everyday work done on the go and without breaking the bank.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Was So Big That Larian Struggling With New Stuff For Next RPG

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 was last year’s biggest hit.
  • While discussing Larian Studios’ next project, the writing director stated that the team is having trouble coming up with something exciting.
  • This is because it wants to offer new and exciting content to the fans, but Baldur’s Gate 3 set a high bar to try and match.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was the biggest release last year. The game dominated 2023 and won so many awards that it became hectic for the developers to attend these ceremonies. While the RPG is already one year old, it’s still averaging around 100K players.

Fans now have great expectations from Larian Studios since the team has started working on its next title, but it appears that the studio is having a hard time because it already did so much in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Why it matters: Baldur’s Gate 3 was among the most massive releases last year. It offered incredibly complex branching stories, complex gameplay, and hundreds of hours worth of gameplay.

Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 Took Home Game of The Year In 2023

During a recent interview with PC Gamer, writing director Adam Smith talked about Larian’s Studios’ next game. As a studio that craves innovation, this project has left the team in quite the dillema.

One of the biggest problems we have now is that whenever we’re talking about things, we say we did that in BG3.

-Adam Smith

Larian Studios can still come up with plenty of ideas. However, when compared to the originality and sheer scope of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s become a major challenge for the developer to keep up.

The writing director also clarified that the studio went through a similar phase when making Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Still Averaging Around 100k Players

Adam says that the team is always looking forward to creating new and unique experiences for the fans. Larian Studios does not want to create new content just for the sake of making something.

This statement alone shows the developer’s drive and commitment to providing an original experience.

Perhaps this situation is made worse by the fact that Larian Studios is working on two projects simultaneously now. CEO Swen Vincke also stated that the team’s next project will be its best work yet.

Therefore, fans have high expectations from the developers, and considering how everyone is pushing themselves to reach new heights, there’s little doubt that the studio will succeed.

Indiana Jones Arriving In November 2024, Suggests Insider

Story Highlights
  • Indiana Jones is now rumored to be released in November rather than December.
  • More footage and new details are expected at Gamescom later in August.
  • Indiana Jones could be the blockbuster title Xbox has been looking for quite some time.

Indiana Jones And The Great Circle was first revealed in January with a rough 2024 release window. Months later, Xbox still hasn’t revealed a final date, but reports did point toward a December launch. However, a new leak suggests it will come out in November.

Why it matters: Fans feared Indiana Jones would be delayed to 2025. However, with a new trailer, Xbox recently reiterated that it’s still a 2024 game.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle seems to be coming in November 2024.

Tom Warren previously predicted a December release for Indiana Jones. However, this release window was discussed when Avowed was still set for a 2024 release. The insider believes that Indiana Jones’ launch may have been brought forward after Avowed’s delay.

He points to a November launch, stating that more details should appear at Gamescom 2024. Therefore, Xbox will likely share an official release window later this month, bringing an end to speculation.

The event kicks off on August 21 and will feature a huge Xbox booth featuring 50 games. This will make the upcoming months quite busy for Xbox fans. Starfield Shattered Space is expected in October, Stalker 2 in November, and Avowed in February 2025.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
More new details are expected at Gamescom 2024.

Microsoft is eyeing great success with Indian Jones and The Great Circle, especially considering how big of a franchise this is. The early trailers have managed to stun with the gameplay and a version of the character that almost looks like the legendary Harrison Ford.

Moreover, while Xbox is shifting to a multiplatform strategy, Indiana Jones And The Great Circle will only be coming to Xbox and PC. It has the potential to be Microsoft’s biggest first-party release this year after Black Ops 6.

Watching Playthroughs Could Ruin Your Gaming Experience

Story Highlight
  • Walkthroughs can help overcome difficult parts of a game but often turn the experience into a checklist, reducing the sense of challenge and discovery.
  • Watching walkthroughs can spoil key moments and surprises in games, diminishing the overall enjoyment and sense of awe during gameplay.
  • It’s better to use short, specific guides or articles rather than detailed walkthroughs to maintain the excitement and surprise in gaming.

Quite often, I’m stuck at a point in a game, and I can’t figure out for the life of me what to do next. The obvious solution to this problem is watching a walkthrough, which is usually to the detriment of my gaming experience. Keep reading to find out why!

How Walkthroughs Help

From their humble beginnings from being magazines filled with tips, tricks, and secrets, game guides and walkthroughs have taken a much different approach these days, though to achieve the same purpose still.

Walkthroughs generally tell you exactly what to do in a game, how, and in what order. This can be very helpful when it isn’t obvious what to do next. In addition, they also help you with challenging sequences like tricky platforming and bosses by telling you techniques that these walls fall to.

These Walkthroughs Helped Me Out A Ton (Image By Fighting Cowboy)

Even though they don’t have all the possible ways to find a solution, they usually have one that works. Pulling up a walkthrough is worth it if you find yourself at a section of a game that you just want to get through as fast as possible because you don’t like it too much.

What Can Go Wrong

These days, video walkthroughs are becoming shorter and shorter, with fewer and fewer views on the more long-form videos on a certain game. The following sections will explain why we think gamers don’t get a good gaming experience after watching walkthroughs.

Turning Into A To-Do List

If you decide to play a game or a level of a game after watching a video on how it is supposed to be played, the charm of the experience gets ruined. Games get turned into a to-do list instead of a meaningful and challenging experience.

Forgotten Crossroads Filled Out Map
Ladies And Gentlemen, Exploration (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Making shorter walkthroughs showing how a certain item is acquired or how a certain platform is cleared, pushes people to explore the rest of the experience for themselves. This is what a lot of gamers want to do; to get the most enjoyability out of their games.

Ruins The Surprise

Walkthroughs take the exploration out of games out of the players. When you’ve seen a video with where a cool moment is and what the cool moment is, you don’t get the feeling of awe you’d get with a vanilla play-through.

Of course, nowadays, almost no one buys a game without some awareness of the content within, through trailers, short-form content, and the like. The problem lies when you know everything surrounding that moment, when you’ll get to it, what leads up to it, and what happens thereafter.

Mesmer
I Spoiled Myself For Mesmer (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Walkthroughs show this information blatantly, and even if you just want to watch until how you get there, it is very hard to restrain yourself from seeing the whole fight which degrades the spectacle in your playthrough.

Walkthroughs Aren’t Evil

I recently got hooked on From Software games, starting with Dark Souls Remastered. I initially watched walkthroughs to gauge the challenge, but it spoiled the surprises. Determined to finish Dark Souls 3 without help, I hit a roadblock at Farron Keep and watched a walkthrough, which spoiled a key boss fight for me.

After finishing the Souls series (excluding Dark Souls 2, for good reason), I began Elden Ring and occasionally used walkthroughs. When the DLC came out, I decided to rely only on brief guides to preserve the surprises.

My point is that while walkthroughs can be helpful, they detract from the experience. I recommend using short, specific guides or articles instead (The latter part being out of goodwill, not to get more of you guys here, but keep visiting; we love your company!). Keep the surprises intact for a more enjoyable experience!

Why Hollow Knight Silksong Must Elevate The “City of Tears” Experience

Story Highlights
  • The City of Tears is a standout location in Hollow Knight, known for its beauty and lore.
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong must create a new iconic location to match or surpass the impact of the City of Tears.
  • Despite prolonged delays and concerns over the Unity engine controversy, Silksong is still highly anticipated for 2024.

When I think of Hollow Knight, one place stands out: the majestic City of Tears. It’s a place where the game’s atmosphere, story, and emotions come together remarkably.

As I eagerly await Hollow Knight: Silksong, I wonder how this new game will match or surpass the impact of the original’s iconic location, the City of Tears.

Elevating Metroidvania With Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight has set a high standard in the Metroidvania genre with its intricate gameplay mechanics, richly detailed world, and deep narrative. The game offers a meticulously designed 2D side-scrolling experience, where players control the Knight while exploring the vast underground kingdom of Hallownest.

Hollow Knight
Fights With Boss Enemy – Image By Wikipedia

The depth of Hollow Knight’s world-building is a standout feature, further enhanced by expansions like The Grimm Troupe and Godmaster, which introduce additional challenges and storylines, enriching the overall experience.

Therefore, Hollow Knight’s acclaim goes far beyond its boss fights. Its environmental storytelling, unique atmosphere for each location, and stunning environments make each area in the game distinctive, with the City of Tears standing out as one of the most breathtaking central locations.

The Legacy Of The City Of Tears

Originally introduced in the first Hollow Knight game, the City of Tears captivated me with its melancholic beauty and layered storytelling. It is a pivotal location in Hollow Knight, serving as one of the central hubs of the game’s sprawling world, Hallownest.

Hollow Knight
Fungal Wastes Gate To Access City Of Tears – Image By Hollow Knight Wiki

The City of Tears stands out for its stunning architecture, creating one of the game’s most iconic and immersive moments. Beyond its beauty, the city is crucial to the game’s lore. It represents a pivotal point where Hallownest fully opens to the player, a design element that Hollow Knight: Silksong must replicate.

It also connects to multiple key areas, including the Royal Waterways and the Resting Grounds. Its design, with its towering structures and echoing ambience, creates a memorable and immersive experience, making it a standout location within the game.

Crafting A New Iconic Locale In Silksong

As the highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight, Silksong faces the challenge of surpassing its predecessor’s legacy. Central to this task is creating a location that matches or exceeds the emotional and atmospheric impact of the beloved City of Tears.

This new locale should enrich gameplay and deepen the narrative, helping Silksong secure its place as a masterpiece in the Metroidvania genre.

However, Team Cherry has revealed that Silksong will be significantly larger than its predecessor. It will feature at least 165 new enemies and over 100 checkpoints (“benches”) throughout the game world, compared to 41 in Hollow Knight. Silksong will be available at launch for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.

Anticipation Amidst Controversy

Silksong remains eagerly awaited in 2024 despite its prolonged development and lack of a firm release date. The game has been in development for about five years, as it was first announced on 14 February 2019, but fans have lacked updates since 2019. According to Leth’s comment, Silksong’s PR director, the game is still under development.

NPCs Garmond And Zaza – Image By Hollow Knight Wiki

Further, the anticipation has been heightened by a controversy in 2023 regarding the Unity engine. Unity Technologies announced a controversial “Runtime” fee, charging developers per game install starting January 1, 2024, causing significant backlash, especially from indie developers.

Fans are concerned that Team Cherry might struggle to cover these potential expenses, which could lead to further delays or complications for the game’s release.

Despite these issues, Team Cherry has reassured fans that the game is still in the works. The excitement for Silksong remains high as it continues to rank among the most anticipated games of the year.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Dev Asks Gamers To ‘Give Them A Chance’

Story Highlight
  • Bloober Team has been facing skepticism from fans over their remake of Silent Hill 2 since the first trailer.
  • The studio’s CEO acknowledges concerns and emphasizes their dedication to respecting the original title.
  • The team is actively listening to feedback to win their trust.

Since the announcement of the Silent Hill 2 remake, fans have been worried about Bloober Team’s involvement. Known for their work on titles like Layers of Fear and The Medium, Bloober Team has received criticism for their approach to sensitive topics and subtle scares.

These worries have grown since they’re taking on one of the most iconic horror games ever. However, Bloober’s CEO, Piotr Babieno, understands the doubts but stresses that earning trust comes from the team’s commitment to quality, not just from talking about it.

Babieno’s goal is simple: he wants to respect the original game’s legacy while meeting the high expectations of its dedicated fans.

Why it matters: People have mixed feelings about the previous horror titles from Bloober Team.

Silent Hill 2 Remake
Fans have expressed skepticism about Bloober Team’s ability to do justice to the original Silent Hill 2.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Babieno acknowledged the community’s concerns and stressed that the team is committed to honoring the original game’s legacy.

I am dreaming that the gamers will trust us… We can’t ask for anything more than ‘give us a chance.’

-Piotr Babieno

The team has listened to fan feedback and used it to improve the remake. For example, they’ve redesigned the protagonist, James Sunderland, to match his original appearance better after fans pointed out he looked younger before.

For Bloober Team, Silent Hill 2 is not just a project—it’s a true passion. Babieno has openly shared what the original title means to him. Watching his brother play the game made a big impact on him and influenced how he viewed horror games.

Silent Hill 2 Remake
Piotr Babieno believes Bloober Team can show they’re up to handling such a beloved title.

This personal connection drives his dedication to keeping the original game’s spirit alive while updating it for modern audiences.

With the release date of October 8 coming up, excitement is building for Bloober Team’s new version of Silent Hill 2. There are also concerns about whether the Polish studio can meet the high expectations of longtime fans.

Fans are eager to see how the team will mix classic horror with modern gaming tech to create the same emotional impact that thrilled players in 2001.

Santa Monica Confirmed To Be Working On New IP

Story Highlight
  • Santa Monica has worked on nothing but God of War for a long time.
  • A developer’s LinkedIn profile reveals that the next game will be a new IP.
  • This game was previously rumored to be a sci-fi franchise led by director Cory Barlog.

Santa Monica is one of the fan-favorite studios due to its work on the God of War games. The developer has earned a lot of love for consistently delivering great releases and evolving with the times.

However, the team has gone silent since the release of God of War Ragnarok and its DLC, but a job listing did hint that the studio had begun working on the next God of War game and that multiple God of War projects were in development.

According to a developer at Santa Monica, a new IP is also being worked on.

Why it matters: Santa Monica has been tied to the God of War series for two decades, so a new IP is a welcome change for this talented and fan-favorite PlayStation studio.

Santa Monica New IP
Santa Monica’s Next Game Seems To Be A New IP

Angie, a user on Resetera, posted a screenshot of a LinkedIn profile that belonged to a Santa Monica developer. The profile reveals that this developer is working as the character supervisor at the studio.

Santa Monica Studios presented the opportunity of coming back as Character Supervisor, looking after the entire Character Development pipeline, on their new IP.

-Developer

The developer has been working with art and games for the past 18 years and is currently a character supervisor at Santa Monica. They have also worked on Uncharted 4, God of War, God of War Ragnarok, Callisto Protocol, and other unannounced projects.

The developer left the studio previously for a better opportunity but has returned to Santa Monica to work on the latest IP. It is also important to note that this is not the first time a new IP has been discussed.

It was previously said that Cory Barlog, the director of 2018’s God of War, was working on a sci-fi franchise for the studio. This is also why he did not return to direct God of War Ragnarok.

An insider states that this IP will surprise a lot of people, though they did not reveal much else. Whatever the case may be, it seems Santa Monica is finally working on its first brand new project after God of War.

Ark: Pyromane Sparks Concerns About Future Monetization

Story Highlights
  • The Center map returns to Ark: Survival Ascended with three new creatures, offering players unique challenges.
  • The first standalone paid creature, Pyromane, has sparked community dissatisfaction and concerns about potential future monetization practices.
  • Introducing microtransactions for stronger creatures in Ark’s PvP servers raises concerns about fairness, game balance, and potential community division.

On June 4, 2024, the Center map returned to Ark: Survival Ascended, a remake of Ark: Survival Evolved. The Center includes a giant floating island, the Lava Biome, and the Underground World, with unique resources and perils.

The Survival Ascended update introduces three new creatures: Ceratosaurus, Xiphactinus, and Gigantoraptor, each with unique abilities. However, The Center in Survival Ascended has faced criticism from players for high PC requirements and a possibly pay-to-win creature that could be a worrying sign for Ark’s future.

First Standalone Paid Creature

The Pyromane in Ark Survival Ascended is a versatile first standalone paid creature with several unique abilities:

  • Flame Trail: Leaves a blazing path, creating obstacles for enemies and providing advantages in PvP encounters.
  • Flame Leap: Allows the Pyromane to perform agile leaps while hurling fireballs, inflicting significant damage.
  • Flame Boost: Enhances its attacks by consuming surrounding flames, increasing damage output, and providing tactical flexibility.
  • Flame Absorb: Lets the Pyromane absorb fire from external sources, storing fiery energy for activating the Flame Boost or other maneuvers.

The Pyromane is also breedable, allowing players to cultivate and deploy multiple creatures strategically.

In Ark: Survival Ascended, Studio Wildcard has introduced a controversial monetization approach with the release of Pyromane. This move has sparked dissatisfaction among the community concerned about potential future implications for Ark 2.

The introduction of Pyromane at $5, inaccessible for taming without purchase, has raised fears that future creatures in the Fantastic Tames DLC may follow suit, departing from the traditional model where DLC packs include all content for a single purchase.

The Controversy Surrounding Standalone Paid Creature

Pyroman - Center DLC release and Ark 2 concerns
Pyroman – (Image Credit by ARK news)

Since The Center is accessible to all users for free, my concern arises over the unfair advantage that purchasers of the Pyromane may gain during PvP sessions. Another prevalent issue is the fragmented content release, contrasting with previous DLC packs available for a single price.

Many players argue that microtransactions in games like Ark should only be for cosmetic items or major additions that benefit everyone. Many other games favour this approach because it avoids making the game pay-to-win, where spending money gives players an unfair advantage.

Studio Wildcard claims the money from buying Pyromane supports their development efforts and allows them to focus most of their efforts and resources on developing Ark 2, the next major installment in the series.

However, I worry this could lead to higher prices for future DLCs. Whether Pyromane becomes a problem in PvP games is uncertain, but its introduction could signal a shift to a new business model that might push away players who don’t want to spend more on minor updates.

Concerns And Criticisms Surrounding Microtransaction Creatures

 Ark 2 concerns with Pyromane
ARK Survival Ascended HERO – (Image Credit by Microsoft)

PvP (Player vs Player) servers are a big draw for many players in Ark. Introducing microtransactions that strengthen someone in these PvP scenarios can quickly turn players away from the game. I also wonder why these new creatures couldn’t just be part of a larger DLC that players could buy simultaneously.

Another issue is game balance. I think Pyromane isn’t strong enough to cause problems, but not all future creatures may be like that. Further, it could make the game feel unfair if you have to buy stronger creatures to keep getting added. It might feel like we can’t compete if we don’t buy these creatures.

There’s also a concern about private servers in Ark 2. If they start disabling or banning these new creatures, it could split the player community. This could make it harder for people to find servers to play on.

My Thoughts

Whether real or made up, new creatures in Ark can be good if done right. But how they’re added into the game matters. Even if the cost isn’t too high, this approach of selling creatures separately is causing a lot of debate and criticism.

It’s unclear if this outcry will lead to any changes, but one idea is to turn off these new creatures on PvP servers. We’ll have to wait and see how this practice in Ark: Survival Ascended continues and how it might affect the future of Ark 2.

Suing FromSoftware Due To Its Difficult Games Is Plain Stupidity

Story Highlight
  • A 4Chan user has recently revealed that he is suing FromSoftware.
  • The lawsuit revolves around a theory that we only get to play half of FromSoftware’s actual content.
  • The user seems to believe that the cut content is hidden in a part of the game that is too difficult to access.

FromSoftware spawned a completely new genre when it launched Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. It then continued to make games in the Souls-like genre, and before we knew it, the team won two GOTY awards.

The developer is best known to the world thanks to Elden Ring and Dark Souls. FromSoftware is also my favorite studio, and I have played every single release from the studio. One common theme across each game from this developer is the difficulty.

These games are relentless and punishing, but this is nothing new. It comes as a surprise, then, that one 4Chan user is suing the team for this exact reason.

Why it matters: The whole lawsuit is based on a weak and nonsensical argument, making it surprising that the user is so confident in moving forward without substantial proof.

The Whole Story

Elden Ring Lawsuit
A 4Chan User Is Unironically Planning To Take This Issue To Court

A 4Chan user has decided to sue FromSoftware because he believes the developer makes its titles way too hard for an average player to enjoy thoroughly. If this was all there was to this story, then it would have been shrugged off as someone who got too angry after a random Elden Ring session.

However, this particular user argues that the likes of Elden Ring have another game hidden in them. He believes those games are hidden behind a massive difficulty curve that even the most dedicated of fans can’t access.

I don’t think I need to tell you how absurd this claim sounds. You can clearly sense ambiguity in his statements. He seems to be trying to say that a title like Elden Ring is too difficult for an average player to enjoy and access all the content.

The 4Chan user also seems to be pointing out that the cut content data miners find is actually part of the game, which is impossible for us to experience. When a AAA project is made, hundreds and thousands of tweaks are made, and much of the content is removed and altered.

This is a common practice during development, so there will always be cut content that is inaccessible to the public. Nothing is shocking about this discovery.

It’s Okay For Games To Be Difficult

This seems like a fan who played Elden Ring and couldn’t do well.

FromSoftware has a reputation for making hard games for a reason. The studio’s releases are carefully designed to offer a specific challenge, and that’s completely fine. Not everyone has to agree with the developer’s decisions or like them.

However, what I find the most absurd here is the fact that his claims are very disconnected from the notion of FromSoftware’s games being challenging. Exploring cut content or secret levels has nothing to do with difficulty.

It requires a completely different set of skills as opposed to mastering a title like Elden Ring. There’s a reason you don’t see Let Me Solo Her revealing datamined content online.

The Post Looks Like Satire, But Is It?

It is pretty obvious that this person is going to make a fool of himself if he proceeds further with this case. In the 4Chan post, the user claimed that in less than two months, the public will be forced to realize that developers have been hiding something from us.

According to him, the hackers (he probably meant data miners) have been lying to us about the cut content. Looking at these claims, it’s hard to see this post as anything but satire.

The user also says that he does not have any proof, but he is going ahead with the case. Furthermore, since the docket number has been shared, it’s difficult to say if the user is actually pulling off an elaborate prank.

No judge will give him permission to go through FromSoftware’s books based on such a theory. Still, I am curious to see what will happen on September 25, when this user will finally reveal a supposedly unknown truth about the gaming industry.

Phantom Blade Zero Dev Says Nobody Needs Xbox

Story Highlight
  • Phantom Blade Zero is not a PS5 exclusive, but the team has received support from PlayStation.
  • The developer has skipped Xbox consoles on purpose, stating that nobody likes the platform in Asia.
  • An S-Game developer explained that Microsoft’s ecosystem is needlessly complicated, so the team has no intention of working on a port.

Phantom Blade Zero has been one of the most talked-about games this year. Despite allegedly being slated for 2026, this action game has already caught everyone’s attention, with many fans anticipating its release.

S-Game has only confirmed a PS5 launch for the title so far, but the team does not appear to have an exclusivity contract. Unfortunately, an Xbox launch seems unlikely since a developer recently rejected the platform and called it unneeded.

Why it matters: The Souls-like genre is incredibly popular across all platforms, including Xbox. Therefore, this information will likely disappoint Xbox users who hoped to play Phantom Blade Zero eventually.

According to a report, the team behind Phantom Blade Zero recently explained its decision to skip the Xbox platform.

This information came from ChinaJoy 2024, where PlayStation presented both Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero. The Japanese gaming giant’s involvement immediately led to speculation about potential exclusivity.

However, both Chinese studios quickly shot down the speculation. Black Myth: Wukong has already been confirmed for Xbox, though Game Science has announced an unspecified delay for the Xbox release.

According to the developers, PlayStation is helping the studios with testing and marketing, but neither of the teams is contractually obligated to exclusivity. They are said to have the final say on what platforms to support.

Elaborating further, an anonymous developer behind Phantom Blade Zero had a very interesting comment to make about Xbox. The developer highlighted PS5 and PC as the most promising platforms and ignored Microsoft’s consoles.

Nobody needs this platform(Xbox).

The developer went on to say that Microsoft’s ecosystem is difficult to work with. He also argued that Xbox is unpopular in Asia, so it does not warrant spending resources for a high-quality port.

While this is not the first time such comments have been made, the developer’s words were certainly very direct. It’s no secret that Xbox has never been too popular in Asia, but the gaming giant has shown interest in exploring the market recently.

Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft has more work to do since various developers are not quite convinced by its current efforts.
