G.Skill Releases Up To DDR5-9600 Trident Z5 CK For Intel Arrow Lake

[Press Release] G.Skill is introducing a brand new series of memory for Intel’s latest processors.

Designed for the Intel Core Ultra 200K chips, the Trident Z5 CK lineup boasts speeds as high as DDR5-9600 and comes in a mirrored black finish heatspreader. Elsewhere, G.Skill boasts an onboard clock driver (CKD) chip for the memory module, offering more efficient and stable operations.

As part of the lineup, the company is releasing kits that meet the DDR5-9000 CL42-56-56-144 specification at 48(2x24GB) total capacity. This makes it ideal for use with chips like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K running on high-end motherboards.

The G.Skill team has also reached DDR5-9600 CL46-58-58 with CU-DIMM in Gear 4 mode. This is yet another instance of the team’s expertise in crafting blazing-fast memory for high-end PC builds.

The DDR5 Kits Support Intel XMP 3.0 Across All Configurations

Finally, G.Skill unleashes the true power of CU-DIMM memory with overclocking of DDR5-10000 for the Trident Z5 CK in dual-channel mode. These overclocking achievements prove that the latest line of Trident memory is no slouch.

The Trident Z5 family’s aesthetic legacy also lives on with the new series, thanks to a sleek and refined black finish. Moreover, an RGB light bar adds an extra flair to the memory, making it all the more appealing.

According to G.Skill, the memory will be released through distributors in October 2024, and you can learn more through this Newegg link.

Black Ops 6 To Boost Game Pass Subs By Up To 4 Million, Says Analyst

Story Highlight
  • Black Ops 6 could lead to millions of new users flocking to Game Pass.
  • Multiple analysts agree that the service will grow due to this release.
  • They also predict that Activision will miss out on a few million sales that can be compensated for through post-launch monetization.

The latest Call of Duty entry is ready to break records once again. Black Ops 6 marks the long-anticipated return of Treyarch and is the first Call of Duty title heading straight to Game Pass.

The game is already doing well on Steam, and an analyst predicts a similarly impressive performance on Xbox’s subscription service. In fact, the game is estimated to bring in millions of new subscribers.

Why it matters: Black Ops 6 has the ability to breathe new life into Xbox’s popular subscription service, making it a pivotal release for the gaming giant.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6
Black Ops 6 Is Just An Hour Away From Release

Speaking to Games industry, analyst Michael Pachter estimated anywhere from three to four million new subscribers for Game Pass after this release. He also predicted that this move would hurt Activision’s bottom line, leading to several million lost sales.

Piers Harding-Rolls, another analyst, believes Game Pass numbers will rise by 10% once Black Ops 6 is released. This would lead to 2.5 million new users joining the service, including those upgrading from lower tiers that no longer offer the luxury of day-one AAA titles.

He estimates that this strategy will lead to Microsoft boosting monetization efforts later in the game’s lifespan to maximize revenue from a bigger audience.

Elsewhere, Newzoo analyst Brett Hunt made similarly encouraging predictions.

This is the most Call of Duty has been reinvigorated in recent years, and the numbers will reflect this.

Overall, it will certainly be interesting to see whether Xbox’s gamble will be worth it. The analysts certainly suggest that it will do wonders for Game Pass. What are your thoughts on these predictions? Let us know in the comments, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

Disk Drive Version of PS5 Account For 80% Sales In The US

Story Highlight
  • 82% of PS5 sales are for the disk drive version, showing strong demand for physical games.
  • The PS5 leads in units sold and revenue, but all major consoles are experiencing declining sales.
  • Gamers are hesitant to switch to digital-only consoles, valuing the ability to resell physical games.

According to the most recent study from market research firm Circana, 82% of PS5 console sales in the US are currently from the disk drive version, with only 18% coming from the digital version.

Why it matters: The strong preference for physical media indicates that many gamers still value ownership and the ability to resell games.

Despite Sony’s efforts to increase the popularity of digital versions, such as reducing the cost and releasing a PS5 Pro that is exclusively available digitally, gamers are still more inclined to spend more for the opportunity to play physical games.

The results show that customers still favour physical games, and the convenience of reselling physical games may be a factor in this choice.

Image Via: MyDrivers

Data from analyst Mat Piscatella shows that in September of this year, the digital version of the PS5 sold 40%. However, the percentage of total PS5 sales was still only 18%, while the disk drive version continued to have an 82% share.

In September, the PS5 maintained its dual dominance in the US market in terms of units sold and overall revenue. The Nintendo Switch took second place in sales revenue, while the Xbox Series took second place in sales volume.

With Xbox sales down 54% year over year, PS5 sales down 45% year over year, and Switch sales down 23%, the US gaming hardware market did exhibit a notable downward trend in September.

Overall, gaming console sales fell 30% compared to the same time last year. Nevertheless, gamers are willing to pay more for the ability to play actual media on their console, at least for the time being.

Furthermore, although it appears likely that games will only be available digitally in the future, players don’t seem to be prepared to make the switch just yet.

Several Third-Party Remasters Could Arrive on Nintendo Switch Next Year

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo Switch 2 is likely to be released next year.
  • A credible Youtuber has suggested that several third-party remasters could be released on Switch next year for players who will likely stick to the release.
  • Ubisoft, EA, and Bandai Namco are among the publishers that will release its remasters on Switch.

While recent reports have suggested that Switch 2 has already entered mass production, fans are still waiting for an official announcement from Nintendo, but sadly, one hasn’t been made yet.

Although an announcement is inevitable and could be made anytime soon, a credible YouTuber has stated that Switch will get multiple remasters from third-party developers in 2025 for the players who stick to the console.

Why it matters: This would allow the Switch to live a few more years even after the release of its successor, as many players would get to play the latest titles on a seven-year-old handheld.

The latest video from tvPH, who previously correctly leaked some of the information, discusses how Nintendo plans to release multiple remasters next year on Switch.

According to him, Nintendo plans to release a GameCube and a Nintendo 3DS game remaster on the handheld next year.

Ubisoft is among the third-party publishers that could release titles like Splinter Cell Blacklist, Rayman 3, and lastly, the first two titles in the Driver series. Other publishers include EA and Bandai Namco.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 Is Likely Coming Next Year

It’s great to see that Nintendo has plans to feed those players who will continue to use their console and still get new titles to play.

Nonetheless, while much information has already been released on the Switch 2, confirming it will support all UE5 features and be available in early 2025, an official announcement is likely to be made before the end of the year.

What do you think about this? Do you think it’s a great initiative to release the remasters on the Switch even after the release of its successor? Let us know in the comments or join Tech4gamers’ official Forums.

Black Myth: Wukong Won GOTY At Thailand Game Awards 2024

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong has won GOTY at the Thailand Game Awards 2024.
  • Along with that, it has won Best Action Game, Best Gane Direction, and Best PC/Console Game Awards.
  • Other games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, The Land Between Us, FC 24, and Zenless Zone Hero have won a major award each.

Black Myth: Wukong is arguably the biggest hit of 2024. It is the most-played single-player game ever on Steam and has garnered a massive fandom. Given how many players played this game, its rating on Steam is overwhelmingly positive.

So, over 95% of players enjoyed the game, but its metascore isn’t that impressive. The game received low scores due to not having enough diversity and inclusivity, but despite that, it won the most prestigious award at the Thailand Game Awards 2024

Why it matters: Black Myth: Wukong surprised everyone at launch, but the Western media didn’t really appreciate the game that much. It won the Game of the Year Award at a major event despite that.

Black Myth Wukong GOTY
Black Myth: Wukong Is Thailand’s Game of the Year 2024 | Source: Thailand Game Awards 2024

As you can see in the image above, the Chinese Action RPG is Game of the Year 2024. Not only that, but it also won Best Action Game, Best Game Direction, and Best PC/Console Game Awards.

This isn’t surprising, given how great the game actually is. It has many bosses that rival the bosses of FromSoftware games, and that is not a stretch. The developers curated a masterpiece on Unreal Engine 5 within 6 years with a very limited budget

Keeping that in mind, it seems to deserve winning such awards. Other games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth won the Best RPG Game Award, The Land Beneath Us won the Best Thai Game Award, FC24 won Best Sports Game, and Zenless Zone Zero won Best Mobile Game.

However, many might take this seriously as the main GOTY award is given at The Game Awards. It will go live in December, and while Wukong seems to be a strong contender, it might not win

What do you think of the Action RPG winning the Game of the Year Award at one of the major events? Do you think it deserves all those awards? Let us know in the comments section below, or join the discussion on Tech4Gamers’ official forums.

Ex-PlayStation CEO Says Japanese Studios Unsuccessful In Reaching Global Audiences

Story Highlight
  • Former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden has said that Japanese studios have failed to reach global audiences.
  • Despite having super-talented people, he thinks many Japanese studios have failed to replicate past successes.
  • His pessimistic views have come off as controversial to most gamers, considering Sony’s recent hits in the Japanese market.

Compared to Xbox, Sony has been making drastic advancements in reaching the Japanese markets and has local gaming studios in the global gaming industry. While many have commended the giant conglomerate on its recent progress, the former PlayStation boss, Shawn Layden, has shared quite a pessimistic view of the current Japanese gaming market.

Shawn Layden has criticized the Japanese studios for trying to reach global audiences, clarifying that many of these teams have been unsuccessful in capturing global attention. He believes these studios should instead focus on the local markets first before taking on drastic international ventures.

Why it matters: Shawn Layden’s pessimistic views regarding Japanese Sony studios have surprised most gamers, considering the recent successes.

Astro Bot, One of the Best Platformers, Was Developed By A Japanese Studio.

Speaking with IGN Japan in a new interview, the former PlayStation CEO also shared his pessimistic outlook on the Japanese gaming market in general. He noted that many Japanese studios have failed to recapture the past successes in recent times. This view comes contrary to recent advances made by Japanese first-party studios like Team Asobi and others.

Many of these teams have not been successful for a long time and are struggling to replicate their past success.

-Shawn Layden

Shawn also found it unsurprising for the PlayStation Japan studio to merge with Team Asobi since the former allegedly failed to have a hit release for a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is another massive Japanese PlayStation entry that has dominated the racing genre globally.

On the flip side, he has applauded Square Enix for giving up on its ambition to expand development overseas to ensure that the local Japanese market is not neglected.

Shawn Layden’s take on Japanese Sony studios has been met with controversy by the community. But what are your thoughts regarding his opinions? Do let us know in the comments below, or join us for a discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

Unknown 9 Awakening ‘Advised By Sweet Baby’ Allegedly Had 0 Pre-Orders On PS5 & Xbox

Story Highlight
  • A GameStop corporate employee claims they have sales data on Unknown 9 sales.
  • The game reportedly recorded 0 PS5 and Xbox pre-orders across 2900 stores.
  • The title also only had just below 300 max players on Steam, with mostly negative reviews.

Bandai Namco’s latest project, Unknown 9: Awakening, is in trouble. The game was recently released to below 300 concurrent players on Steam and had ‘Mostly Negative’ reviews. However, a report suggests even worse numbers on PS5 and Xbox.

Why it matters: Sweet Baby Inc. has been at the helm of the game, which, for most people, is an automatic ticket to disaster. The company has been accused of forcing woke agendas into games, leading to failures.

According to a GameStop corporate employee, they have the data on over 2900 stores. For the PS5, they had about 350 physical copies of Unknown 9 and 150 for Xbox Series consoles. However, the demand for either was 0.

Additionally, 500 online copies were available across both PS5 and Xbox Series, and they, too, had 0 sales. So, there weren’t just no pre-orders for the physical copies; the digital ones suffered a similar fate as well.

Unknown: Awakening 9 recorded 0 pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series

Now, considering the source is anonymous, this is a bit skeptical. Even if a game is this bad, having 0 digital sales is a bit unbelievable. However, if it is indeed true, Bandai really needs to consider the direction it is heading towards.

Unknown 9 had a lot of potential. It could’ve turned into something much bigger, but the fans argue that the wokeness in the game killed it even at launch.

This is just another instance of a game advised by Sweet Baby going downhill. Unfortunately, the trend has become rather recurring as more games suffer. Most fans say that forced inclusivity isn’t important in gaming, and it kills the art.

Best 240mm AIO Coolers

Following are our picks for the best 240mm AIO coolers:

  1. Best Overall: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB
  2. Best High Performance: EK Nucleus AIO CR240 Lux D-RGB
  3. Best Budget: ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240
  4. Best White: Corsair iCUE H100i Elite Capellix XT
  5. Best RGB: Lian Li Galahad II Trinity 240

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB

Best Overall 240mm AIO Cooler

Specifications: Dimensions: 277 x 120 x 38mm | Fans: 2x ARCTIC P12 PWM PST A-RGB | Fan Speed: 200 – 1,800RPM | Socket SupportIntel: LGA 1700, AMD: AM4, AM5 | RGB: Yes

Pros

  • Excellent performance thanks to denser fin stacking
  • 60mm VRM fan
  • RGB pump and fans

Cons

  • Contact frame makes installation a bit tricky for Intel builds

Read Our ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 White A-RGB Review

My first recommendation for the best 240mm AIO is the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB. I have tested both the older Liquid Freezer II 240 and the latest Liquid Freezer III 240 on my i7-13700K, and the performance difference between them is day and night. Apart from the high-performance P12 PWM PST A-RGB fans, the main reason why this AIO performs so exceptionally well is due to the denser fin stacking, giving the radiator ~23% more surface area.

Of course, the 60mm VRM fan is a great add-on that made sure my overclocking adventures remained as stable as possible. Plus, the pre-routed cables mean very little cable clutter. The radiator and the baseplate are made using aluminum and copper, so there are no issues with the build quality, either. As for the design, there is an RGB pump cover and fans, but I would have liked to control the lighting of the two independently. Nevertheless, it has a sleek design that looks like a breath of fresh air from its predecessor.

Here’s what I said about the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB in my review:

I’ve been really impressed with the Arctic Liquid Freezer III 240 White ARGB. It’s clear they’ve made significant strides in design and performance, taking user feedback to heart. The fact that it fits major sockets, excels in heat dissipation and offers sleek cable management really stands out.

✅Buy It If

You want to cool high-end CPUs: I tested the Liquid Freezer III 240 with the i7-13700K, and it gave me zero performance hiccups. As such, it is a great AIO to go for if you have high cooling needs.

You are after good value for your money: The Liquid Freezer III 240’s performance, design, and build quality more than justify its already attractive pricing, making it a very good bang for the buck.

You want VRM cooling: The 60mm VRM cooler is a great addition that does a surprisingly good job at keeping the VRMs stable. I tested the cooler on the GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS ELITE AX, and it ran better than before.

❌Don't Buy It If

You are on the Intel platform and want an easy installation: For Intel builds, you have to install the Contact Frame, which means removing the stock ILM. Basically, the installation is not as basic and requires a bit more expertise.

What Makes It The Best Overall 240mm AIO Cooler?

The main reason I’m recommending the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 over other coolers is that it is a complete package that does not compromise performance one bit. From the sleek pump design to the increased surface area on the radiator, ARCTIC has knocked it out of the park with the sheer amount of improvements in the Liquid Freezer III series. Plus, combined with the impressive pricing, there is no other option that I would call the best overall 240mm AIO.

Editor`s Note
Image

Our CPU coolers expert team and I tested more than 10x 240mm AIOs to round up the top six, but the one that stood out the most to me was the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB. It is a true bang for the buck that delivers excellent performance while looking drop-dead gorgeous. Apart from a few installation hiccups because of the Intel Contact Frame, my experience with the Liquid Freezer III 240 has been as smooth as possible.

Pros

  • Unparalleled performance
  • Attractive pricing
  • Stealthy design

Cons

  • Tubing could have been longer

Read Our EK Nucleus AIO CR240 Lux D-RGB Review

The EK Nucleus AIO CR240 Lux D-RGB is the best high performance 240mm AIO you can get right now. In all of my testing, it handled both high-end gaming and long stress tests without breaking a sweat. In fact, the AIO performed so incredibly well that it topped my 240mm AIO testing charts by a mile. It uses the EK-Loop FPT fans that offer exceptional static pressure (hence the name Full Pressure Technology). Plus, the pump can operate at speeds of 3100 ±10% RPM, which is very impressive.

Going over the build quality, I had no issues at all. The radiator, pump, and even the tubing are built from high-quality materials and are meant to last; being EK, I don’t expect anything less. I only wished that the tubes were longer than 370mm. That would have made installation even easier (not that it is difficult right now). On the upside, the fans can be daisy-chained to reduce cable management. As for the looks, the AIO offers a stealth black design with no flashy RGB – perfect for neutral or black builds.

Here’s how I summarised the cooler in my hands-on review:

The EK-Nucleus CR240 Dark is a sleek, high-performance 240mm liquid cooler without RGB, designed for Intel and AMD platforms. It features efficient cooling with a copper cold plate, EK-Loop FPT fans, and a simple cable management system.

✅Buy It If

You plan to overclock with the best cooling AIO: The EK Nucleus AIO CR240 Lux D-RGB does not compromise on performance at all. It left all the other 240mm AIOs I tested behind in terms of sheer cooling capabilities.

You don’t want to spend top-dollar: Despite its remarkable performance, the AIO is not as expensive as you would think, making it a great value-for-money option. The main reason behind the AIO’s impressive pricing is the lack of RGB.

You hate cable management: Since all the fans can be daisy-chained, all you have to do is plug in the single cable with EK-OmniLink.

❌Don't Buy It If

You want longer tubing: While installation wasn’t difficult for me, if you think the 370mm tubing is not enough for you, you may want to explore some other options.

What Makes It The Best High Performance 240mm AIO Cooler?

Apart from the stealthy looks, high build quality, and great value for money, what makes the EK Nucleus AIO CR240 Lux D-RGB the best high performance 240mm AIO is its cooling capabilities. The AIO really knocks high-stress loads out of the park, and you can easily push even the latest flagship CPUs to the limit with it.

Pros

  • Good build quality
  • Decent performance
  • Remarkable pricing
  • Beautiful aesthetics
  • Low noise fans
  • Easy installation process

Cons

  • Low overclocking potential
  • RGB LEDs could be a bit brighter

The ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240mm AIO cooler is one of my favorite budget CPU coolers because of its beautiful aesthetics and remarkable cooling performance, albeit unable to beat most of its competition. Starting from its build quality, you’ll see a copper baseplate and an aluminum radiator with an 18 FPI. Although the number is less than 20-21 in most AIO coolers, the cooling isn’t as compromised.

Regarding its performance, the ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240 is decent for most use cases, but I don’t recommend it if you want to achieve high overclocks on a flagship processor. You’ll be fine on a mid-range CPU, though. Furthermore, I like the cooler’s looks, featuring a neat-black design and gorgeous LED lights all over the pump. My only issue is that the RGB lights could be slightly brighter. Other than that, it’s perfect for a budget AIO cooler, costing half the price of its competitors.

✅Buy It If
You want an AIO cooler that’ll get the job done without completely compromising looks: If you don’t care too much about overclocking and only want an AIO cooler that’ll cool your PC and provide decent aesthetics, then I recommend purchasing the ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240mm AIO cooler due to its lower price, performance, and aesthetics.
❌Don't Buy It If
You want to achieve higher overclocks on a flagship CPU: I don’t recommend purchasing the ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240mm AIO cooler if you’re using a flagship CPU and want to overclock it to its limits. The AIO is decent for mid-range CPUs but will undoubtedly hiccup when paired with a flagship Intel CPU.

What Makes It The Best Budget 240mm AIO Cooler?

When talking about AIO coolers, you’ll first notice their thermal performance. Now, if a 240mm AIO cooler performs on the same level as a 360mm but comes at half the price, you’ll want it, right? That’s where the ID-Cooling FrostFlow X 240mm AIO cooler comes in. It provides decent performance, pleasing aesthetics, and excellent features while staying at a low price, making it the best budget 240mm AIO cooler.

The Lian Li Galahad II Trinity 240mm AIO cooler comes with ultra-fast 2x 120mm fans running at 2,450RPM speeds with an astounding 61.3CFM that helps improve the PC case’s airflow capabilities. During my testing, I observed the temperatures going lower with positive pressure airflow in the chassis. You’re on a tighter budget: I don’t recommend buying the Lian Li Galahad II Trinity 240mm AIO cooler if you’re on a tighter budget because it comes with a higher price tag without providing the same performance level as its competition, making the purchase less viable for budget gamers.

Benchmarks Of The Best 240mm AIO Coolers

To make sure my recommended 240mm AIOs are truly the best in the market, my team and I tested several 240mm AIOs. Our testing methodology included stress testing the i7-13700K with a full 30-minute load on Cinebench with power limits removed. Basically, we pushed the AIOs to their limits. However, for gaming scenarios and most day-to-day use, you’ll not experience such high thermals unless you install the cooler incorrectly.

Why We Didn’t Go For These 240mm AIO Coolers

Our hardware experts have tested countless 240mm AIO coolers, but here are a few honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut for our list and why:

  • NZXT Kraken Z53 RGB: A higher price for lower performance makes it a less viable purchase.
  • DeepCool Castle 240EX: It has an older generation pump, making it less suitable for the latest high-end CPUs.
  • EK AIO 240mm D-RGB: It has been discontinued and doesn’t support LGA 1700 right out of the box.

How We Picked & Selected These 240mm AIO Coolers

When it comes to choosing an AIO for your CPU, we always advise our users to consider all factors before making a decision. Choosing an AIO cooler can sometimes be difficult due to the variety of options available, but don’t worry; we’ve collected a list of buying recommendations to help you make an informed decision.

  • Socket Compatibility: Every CPU has a different number of pins, meaning a different socket size. Before choosing a 240mm AIO, make sure it supports your CPU socket. Buying an AIO with the wrong CPU socket compatibility will not work. To check the socket compatibility options for your preferred cooler, visit the manufacturer’s site.
  • TDPKnowing your preferred AIO cooler’s Thermal Design Power is another important factor, as you don’t want the AIO’s TDP to be lower than the CPU’s. Otherwise, you won’t be able to cool your CPU correctly, leading to thermal throttling and lowering your PC’s performance.
  • Noise LevelsSometimes, some users prefer dead silent PCs; that is why we always say to make sure to do your research before purchasing a product with so many moving parts. AIO coolers contain fans and pumps that tend to make a lot of noise at times, and lowering RPM speeds reduces thermal performance, too.
  • Aesthetics: In the end, you can always go for good looks. 240mm AIO coolers are available in countless shapes and designs, from the good-looking Corsair 240mm radiators to the decent and silent be quiet! You can always choose the AIO that best suits your personality.

Single Player Games Are Overthrowing Multiplayer Games And I Love It

Story Highlight
  • 2024 saw major multiplayer game failures like Concord and Skulls and Bones, which launched to underwhelming player counts.
  • Single-player titles, including Black Myth: Wukong and Silent Hill 2, have outshined multiplayer games with massive success and widespread acclaim.
  • The trend of single-player games continues, with more promising releases this year, such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Indiana Jones, and others.

Despite big publishers like EA saying that the era of single-player games is over, that statement is entirely false, and single-player games continue to shine. Even though that part is true, it’s no secret that the industry has been pushing towards multiplayer or live-service releases since they generate more money.

Even at the start of this year, we saw many multiplayer and live-service releases, such as Palworld, Helldivers 2, Skulls and Bones, and others, and truth be told, they brought more noise to the gaming world than they did joy.

Their buzz was short-lived, and games like Helldivers 2 have significantly lost their player count. Recently, many great AAA single-player releases have overtaken multiplayer games altogether, and I love this.

Why It Matters: Multiplayer games are sure to cause negativity, and this year has been toxic for video games in general, which has tensions between developers and gamers. Single-player games, on the other hand, are a different case.

2024 Was The Worst Year For Multiplayer Games

Concord New Featured
Concord Is The Biggest Failure In Gaming History

While this year wasn’t that heavy in terms of multiplayer game releases, the titles were still quite subpar, and some were just good enough because the bar was set too low.

We finally got to witness the release of Skulls and Bones, a game that has seen a development period of over a decade. Unfortunately, Ubisoft’s AAAA title was half-baked and just felt difficult to play, ending up being one of the biggest flops in the industry.

Helldivers 2 was also released this year. It is an AA PlayStation title that shocked gamers because of its co-op approach and was constantly the headline topic for a few months until the game fell off. It now has an 18k player count on Steam compared to the 458k count that it had earlier this year.

Like Helldivers 2, Palworld also lost its fanbase due to a lack of content and now has only 14k concurrent players, as opposed to the 2.1 million peak in January.

Onwards to Concord, the ambitious PlayStation release was the biggest failure in gaming history. Despite having a budget of $400 Million, the game looked and played like a generic live-service shooter and was taken down just two weeks after its release.

These games spread a lot of negativity in the industry, and rightfully so, because gamers were pissed at these subpar releases and poor direction. Multiplayer games have become too complicated for their own good.

Recent Single-Player Releases Outshined Multiplayer Games

Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong Raises The Bar High For RPG Game

The second half of 2024 has been great, and only because of these single-player releases. We’ve seen huge hits recently, starting off with Black Myth: Wukong, which sold 10 million copies in just three days and has become one of gaming’s greatest successes at a mere budget of $42.3 Million.

Bloober Team’s recent remake of Silent Hill 2 has also been met with great reception, despite early impressions saying otherwise. The game carries the same essence as the original, which is why it was so great in the first place.

God of War: Ragnarok also arrived on PC last month, and I finally got to witness the end of the Norse saga. I loved every bit of it.

Even going forward, we’re getting Red Dead Redemption for PC, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, which is shaping up to be a GOTY contender, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Indiana Jones: The Great Circle, and other TBA releases.

From early previews, all of these games look amazing. They will bless us with a great holiday season and end 2024 on a high note.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Is The Pinnacle Of Fan-Service

Story Highlight
  • Spike Chunsoft’s Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has become a standout anime adaptation, delivering peak fan service with a massive roster of 182 characters from across the Dragon Ball series.
  • The story mode also features What If scenarios, while Custom Battles lets players create and share personalized battles, offering fresh storylines and endless replayability.
  • The Tenkaichi formula is better than ever, and the visuals perfectly replicate Toriyama’s original work, making Dragon Ball Sparking Zero feel more than just a video game.

While Spike Chunsoft has always been the one to promote fan service in their video games, their last title, Jump Force, wasn’t the best of arena fighters and faced incredible backlash. This is why Dragon Ball Sparking Zero’s developer wasn’t first revealed with the game’s announcement.

Spike Chunsoft did an incredible job nonetheless, and Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has easily become the best Dragon Ball video game ever.

The developers truly showcased their love and knowledge of the Dragon Ball world with this video game, and everything about the game is peak fan service for Dragon Ball and anime fans.

Why It Matters: Video game adaptations of anime aren’t always great; most of the time, publishers use the brand name for money. However, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero is a different case and shows every bit of reason why the manga and anime adaptation are special in the first place.

Insane Roster Of Characters

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Character Roster
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Character Roster

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has a roster of a whopping 182 characters, which is insane, even more so considering this is just from the base game, excluding DLC characters.

Even setting apart variants of the character, Spike Chunsoft put in some real effort to record different voice line character models and attacks for all these characters. The best part about the game is that it features characters from the base Dragon Ball anime, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball GT, and even the latest Dragon Ball Daima anime.

No Dragon Ball game has ever done that, and the character interactions in this game are something that we Dragon Ball fans have wished for years. Each interaction is unique, and it’s nice to see characters that haven’t interacted before talk to each other, such as Bardock with Goku or Future Gohan with Goten.

The possibilities are infinite, and the interaction is unique each time, adding a sense of lore and what-if possibilities in the battles, making them even more exciting.

Not Your Average Dragon Ball Story

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Has What If Story Moments

Talking about What If cases, the story mode features scenarios triggered by only completing certain objectives and missions, triggering a brand new storyline for Dragon Ball fans to discover.

The game’s visuals are a sight to behold. The art style perfectly encapsulates Toriyama’s artwork in the Manga, and combined with the insane particle effects, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero looks so good that they could just make CGI anime using the game, adapt the rest of Dragon Ball Super chapters, and I’ll be glad.

Spike Chunsoft’s dedication to the game is surprising, considering how everyone said that every new Dragon Ball game is just a reskin of previous games. Still, the developers revived the Budokai Tenkaichi series with a bang that feels entirely fresh.

Sparking Zero Is Creativity At It’s Peak

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Is One Of The Most Creative Anime Video Games Ever

The best part about the game is Custom Battles. This mode allows players to develop their very own What If stories with different outcomes. There are existing battles created by the developers that each feature unique team-ups against characters.

Or else, you can choose to create your own battles, too, with unlimited creativity in what can be done. In a way, you’re making your own Dragon Ball story. What if Goku was trapped in the Hyperbolic Chamber for 10,000 years? What if Cabba defeated Gojeta SSJ4? Anything is possible with Custom Battles.

You can also set it to trigger some unique effects after certain conditions are met as side objectives. There are just so many customizable options for these bonus battles that players won’t be able to digest at first glance.

After creating, you can upload these battles to the Sparking Zero server for other players to browse and play from. This allows for a whole new creativity level, especially for Abriged creators, who can make some funny custom battles that will contribute to the game’s longevity for years to come.

Unreal Engine 5’s Stuttering Seriously Needs To Be Dealt With

Story Highlight
  • Unreal Engine 5 is notorious for the stutter struggle.
  • Whether it be shader compilation or traversal stutter, practically every game is impacted by these hiccups.
  • Industry-wide adoption could lead to fixes in the future as developers collaborate to develop a definitive solution.

Unreal Engine 5 has emerged as the technology of choice for studios aiming to deliver truly ground-breaking and next-generation experiences with their games. Dubbed the most advanced and rapidly adopted engine of this age, Epic’s technology has quickly caught on.

However, one major problem remains unaddressed. The dreadful Unreal Engine 5 stutter has plagued many a title over the years, and it continues to be a thorn in PC gaming’s side several years later.

Why it matters: PC gaming is bigger than ever today, making it unacceptable that the industry’s most popular game development platform performs so poorly on the most capable of PCs.

Industry-Wide Adoption

Unreal Engine 5 Games on Xbox
Everyone Is Interested In Leveraging Epic’s Technology For Future Games | Image via Tech4Gamers

It would not be wrong to say that Unreal Engine 5 is the most widely adopted technology today. In many ways, this engine has become the poster boy of the current generation, giving it an edge over existing proprietary solutions.

Though Unreal Engine has always been popular, its latest iteration gives developers more than a few reasons to abandon years of research on in-house engines in the pursuit of streamlined development and a new bar of quality.

For instance, CD Projekt RED has abandoned its RED Engine despite setting new benchmarks for ray-tracing and open-world gaming with Cyberpunk 2077. Elsewhere, a team like EA Motive has made the switch after achieving stellar results with Frostbite in Dead Space Remake.

Because streamlined development is a key theme and one of the biggest advantages of this technology, indie developers have flocked to Epic’s platform all the same. A massive franchise like Halo is also betting big on Unreal Engine 5 for its future, signifying a trend in the industry.

This unified platform is clearly the future, but is the industry truly fine with a future that can’t go a few seconds without hitching or suffering from hiccups?

The Stutter Struggle

You need not look any further than two of the biggest recent releases, Silent Hill 2 and Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, to see why the stuttering is such a big handicap for Unreal Engine 5.

Silent Hill 2 Remake is nothing short of remarkable, yet for everything the game does right, it is held back by a persistent sense of hitching. As Digital Foundry puts it, the stutter struggle is unavoidable here.

Instead of the typical shader compilation stutter, this remake suffers from traversal stutter, a travesty that continues to plague Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi titles to this day. Unfortunately, there seems to be no easy fix.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero’s problem is less severe, by comparison, highlighting the typical case of missing shader compilation. For a game that hit over 100K players on Steam at release, I can’t help but find this omission extremely disappointing.

Even a critically acclaimed title like Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2 exhibits traversal stutter, albeit at a much smaller scale. Looking at these examples, it’s clear that something needs to change at the very core of this technology.

As Digital Trends explains, these stutters can also originate from Pipeline State Objects (PSOs). Generating one can take as much as 100ms when rendering large amounts of graphical data into PSOs.

This can then lead to recurring stutters as the game relies on generating new PSOs. Ultimately, whatever the source of this problem, Unreal Engine 5’s reputation has taken a severe hit because of the situation.

What About The Future?

CD Projekt RED Cyberpunk 2077 The Witcher 3
CD Projekt RED Is Investigating The Stutter Struggle

Fortunately, there’s some good news. Epic is aware that this issue is widespread, so the company is taking steps to ensure that a fix is found sooner rather than later.

For instance, PSO caching already exists in recent versions of Unreal Engine 5, and the team attempted to automate this process as early as 2022. Though these efforts may not have solved the dilemma altogether, the company is clearly on the right track.

CD Projekt RED’s focus on the engine has also given audiences cause for celebration. Many are hoping that the team will be able to use its technical knowledge and work with Epic to squash the stutter struggle once and for all.

Here’s hoping that the industry’s best minds coming together will be the solution we needed all along, ridding us of PC gaming’s biggest nightmare.
