Black Myth: Wukong Is A GOTY Contender But It Might Not Win – Here’s Why

Expert Verified By

Black Myth: Wukong broke a lot of records upon release, proving many people wrong. However, the game was targeted for featuring less diversity and inclusivity, which might cost it the GOTY award.

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong has proven to be a solid GOTY contender, as the hype of this game is real.
  • While this game is a GOTY contender it is unlikely to win due to various reasons.
  • Some media outlets gave this game a really low score due to less inclusivity and diversity, so it has a low chance of surviving in a Western-dominated award ceremony.

It has been over two weeks since Black Myth: Wukong was released, and I have over 60 hours in this game. It would be fair to say that I am obsessed with this game. I am currently on my NG+ run and have thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Having beaten the majority of the bosses and explored almost every single place, I think this game is a solid GOTY Contender. That should be obvious to anyone who has played this game and saw the positive points. However, this game might not be able to take the most prestigious award home, and I have plenty of reasons to think so.

Why it matters: Black Myth: Wukong is the first massive AAA game from a Chinese studio and its erupting success has made many try this game out.

I have played the game for so long and would 100% recommend every RPG and Soulslike fan to give this game a try. You can make it too hard or too easy, depending on how you would like to play this game. There is so much you can do in this game, and once you get to understand how it works, I am positive that you will have a fun experience.

This game boasts over 90 bosses, many of which are unique. While there are badly designed boss fights like Yellowbrow, I think many are designed quite well. I would say some of its bosses would even give FromSoftware a run for its money.

The Great Sage’s Broken Shell is arguably the coolest boss in the game, and it might even surpass the quality of the final version of FromSoftware’s boss. All the taunts and arrogance he shows while besting you in a fight are worth watching.

There are many positive points about the game that make it a worthy GOTY contender. However, while it has a lot of positive points, it is bound to have some negatives, too.

The Terrible Boss Fights Somewhat Ruins The Experience

Yellowbrow Is The Worst Designed Boss In Black Myth: Wukong

I am a huge fan of FromSoftware’s works, and playing its game is fun. Sure, games like the Elden Ring and Dark Souls series can get frustrating, but that is slightly different from the frustration you can face in Black Myth: Wukong. Let me explain why.

In Elden Ring bosses, you can see a pattern and learn about it. You can improvise and beat the boss that way. However, in Black Myth: Wukong, the bosses are unpredictable and can get the better of you often.

Also, some of them are hard just for the sake of being hard. Don’t get me wrong, you can learn the boss pattern, but the boss may act really unpredictable sometimes.

They are given so many gimmicks to figure out, which is annoying and frustrating. I don’t really like the idea of using some items to take those gimmicks away from the bosses, but at least you can do something to remove them.

Ironically, No Diversity and Inclusivity

Above, I have highlighted some genuine problems in the game. However, there are some other problems, which is why it might not win the Game of the Year Award. Some game journalists gave this game a really low score because it lacked exclusivity and diversity

I don’t think that’s fair, as the game has enough diversity. What do you want more? Different race people? That wouldn’t make sense at all, as this game revolves around the novel Journey to the West. So, changing it to fit the modern audience would be disrespectful to the Chinese folks as well as to history.

However, I think the game won’t win the GOTY awards because of this unfair reasoning. Of course, there are many things that are considered when evaluating the winner. Among those, I think this game should have the most chance of winning as it has a really compelling story, boss fights, OSTs, and graphics.

Black Myth: Wukong is literally a visual feast despite featuring a lot of great boss fights and a fascinating story. While it might not win the award, it is still a great game and is among my favorite games. If you haven’t played this game yet, you should give it a try and see the hype for yourself.
