GeForce RTX 5090 and 5090D Getting Bricked After Recent Drivers Update

Colorful and Manli are currently the only two AIB partners that have produced these problems. However, several complaints of the same problem with Gigabyte’s RTX 5090D have also surfaced.

According to the affected users, the issue began when the most recent drivers were installed. Another user reports that after installing the driver for his GeForce RTX 5090D (Colorful) GPU, the screen became black after he booted up his computer.

Furthermore, a customer using Manli GeForce RTX 5090D GPU posted a similar problem on Baidu Forums. After installing drivers on his computer, the OS failed to recognize his GPU.

Goofish, one of the vendors at the third-party store, claims that all NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5090D cards have the same problem, and there’s a good chance that the most recent drivers may cause the card to crash.

Additionally, several customers using the GeForce RTX 5090 are reporting similar problems, suggesting that this problem may not be specific to the 5090D. In the ASUS subreddit, a user with an RTX 5090 reports that neither the BIOS nor the drivers can identify the card on Windows.

Although it is not a proven solution, some people think that switching the PCIe option from 5.0 to 4.0 would resolve the problem. However, the issue might be bigger than being reported, considering only a limited number of people got their hands on the new GeForce RTX 5090.

We went ahead and calculated the averages obtained from the eight tested games, and we saw that the RTX 5090 was the victor. Compared to the RX 7900 XT, the RTX 5090 performed 66.5% on average in terms of 4K gaming. The RX 7900 XT is better at 1440p, so the way it performed at 4K is understandable.

1% Lows:

As for the performance regarding the 1% lows, we saw almost the same story. According to our calculations, the RTX 5090 had smoother dips, 63.9% more smoother than the RX 7900 XT. However, the RX 7900 XT’s 1% low performance was fairly good when we compared it to its average framerates.  

Productivity:

In terms of productivity, the result was also clear-cut. We saw that, on average, the RTX 5090 performed around 40% better than the RX 7900 XT, especially in the area where rendering and AI tasks are involved. For video editing, the RX 7900 XT performed excellently as well.

For now, the RX 7900 XT is around 74% cheaper than the RTX 5090, and it is far more widely available in online stores. In terms of the RTX 5090’s current price, it is still being sold for its MSRP. However, this is going to change, and it’s not going to change for the better because its price is going to increase significantly. 

Final Verdict—What We Recommend?

RX 7900 XT: This is more of a 1440p card because it barely reached the 60 FPS mark in games played at 4K. However, you can easily use it for 4K as well by lowering the settings of the game. Apart from gaming, it is also excellent in terms of video editing. However, it lacks performance in rendering and in AI-based workloads. 

RTX 5090: On the contrary, this card is in a league of its own. It surpassed each section with flying colors if we disregard its insanely high power consumption. Moreover, the price of Nvidia’s flagships always reaches sky-high, and this is going to be the case for this card as well. But would its upcoming high price be justified? 

Regardless, we suggest you get the RX 7900 XT if you want a 1440p card that not only provides a great gaming experience but also is a great choice for productivity. And if you want to rig your setup with the best GPU and you have no issues with the budget, go for the RTX 5090 by all means.

The $8.2 million figure is particularly impressive given the game’s $59.99 price tag and the negative feedback surrounding its PC performance. The game also needed only two days to achieve that milestone.

The game’s success on Steam is also due to the popularity of its predecessors. Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were both highly successful on PC.

Given the sales number and the game’s price tag, we can estimate that Spider-Man 2 has already sold 150,000 copies on Steam in just two days. It goes on to show how popular a franchise Spider-Man is.

It’s worth noting that the game was cracked immediately after its release, with reports suggesting over 300,000 people downloaded the pirated version. The sales figures might have been much higher had the game not been cracked so early after the launch.

All in all, Spider-Man 2 has been a massive success for Sony, despite its sky-high development cost of $315 million. Within the first 24 hours on PS5, the game sold over 2.5 million copies, setting a new record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in history.

It is by far the lowest latency kit with the tightest CAS timings we have tested, and the benchmarks speak for themselves. With a fancy design in silver or gold, the RAM kit has a mirrored finish with a shiny look, perfect for gamers who want the best aesthetics in their PC.

While we didn’t overclock the RAM kit in our testing, you can likely gain at least a 200MHz boost without loosening the CAS timings. Doing so will lower the latency even more and improve overall performance. After all, AMD CPUs love frequencies between 6000MHz and 6400MHz.

Upon opening the packaging, we see two beautiful RAM kits meshed between a bunch of styrofoam. G.Skill has provided a sticker and a manual to accompany the kit. The packaging is similar to the other kits from this lineup, so it’s not surprising.

The sticker at the bottom right of the RAM kit identifies its series number, “F5-6000J2636G32GX2-TR5NG”. We also noticed a few compliance tags and a barcode for accessing the product website on the fly.

Overall, we loved the RAM kit’s packaging, recognizing that it is indeed a premium product that deserves premium packaging.

At the right of the kit, we have the “Trident Z5 Royal Neo” branding in white on both sides. The RAM kit stands 44mm tall, so make sure you won’t face any compatibility issues with your CPU cooler, especially if you’re running a dual-tower air cooler.

The AIDA64 benchmarks are quite interesting. The RAM kit beats all the others in the read test, reading 68,067MB/s. It is second in the write and copy tests, directly below the Z5 Royal Neo 8000MHz, tuned to 6400MHz at CL28. The performance difference between the first and second places is also vast, which should be noted.

Interestingly, in the AIDA64 latency test, the RAM kit falls to the middle of the graph with a 64.4ns latency. The score difference may be because of the higher RAM capacity at 64GB, which may be causing the latency to increase due to the additional memory ranks.

In the Cinebench R23.2 multi-score test, the G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal Neo 64GB 6000MHz RAM kit dropped to the lower half of the graph, scoring only 23,013 points. Thankfully, the score difference isn’t high, so you shouldn’t see much of a performance drop.

My Thoughts

The G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal Neo 64GB 6000MHz CL26 is a high-end RAM kit for productivity tasks on the top Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series CPUs. The kit features the same premium aesthetics as other kits in the lineup. The heat spreaders have a mirrored silver or gold finish, and a beautiful crystalline light bar is on top, supporting addressable RGB lighting.

The kit’s performance shouldn’t be taken lightly. It topped most AIDA64 tests, including the AIDA64 read test, and was second in the write and copy tests. Its AIDA64 latency and Cinebench R23.2 results were mediocre, but that’s to be expected from a higher-capacity RAM kit. Overall, the 8.66ns is amazing for content creators and industries that depend on immediate data processing.

 

Sega’s Retro Revival Would Be Incomplete Without Altered Beast

Many video game companies that were once the talk of the town are merely relics now for us to fondly remember. Time is cruel indeed. However, some managed to rise from the ashes with a renewed vitality and portfolio. SNK is a living example that second chances do exist, and so is Sega.

Well, technically Sega never went bankrupt like SNK, but hey, you get the point. Sega’s triumphant revival is certainly a success story if I saw one, and while it’s not returning to the console market, it surely is making some massive waves in the video game department—Persona, Yakuza, Sonic, and of course, the much-awaited retro-revival.

Why it matters: Sega’s retro games still remain some of its best works, and since it is willing to see them soar again, Altered Beast more than deserves a chance.

Sega Is Coming In Hot Lately

Speaking of Sega immediately flashes that iconic logo with the “Sega” voice in my mind, taking me back to the good old times. Playing Altered Beast for the first time, failing miserably in some high-speed platforming of Sonic, and who can ever forget the pleasantly unique Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi?

Sega went through a rough patch both in the console and the video game department a good while ago. Unfortunately, the console area’s failures were unsalvageable, but the tech giant never gave up in the game domain. Yes, it didn’t have any significant hits in a long time, but all that changed when Persona and Yakuza introduced themselves.

Atlus’ Persona and RGG’s Yakuza brought fresh energy to Sega’s lineup. Interestingly, both series flew under the radar for years, but fans eventually discovered their hidden brilliance and gave them the spotlight they always deserved.

Still, you can’t help but miss all those classic Sega games, I know I do. Sega heard this too it seems and said “Here you go.” That’s right, Sega’s long-lost gems are about to return, and I couldn’t be happier. Well, except for Altered Beast.

Altered Beast, Beat ‘Em Up With A Wild Twist

Ah, Altered Beast. I remember I couldn’t get enough of this game back in the old days, even though it’s a short and honestly fairly straightforward game. Yet its unique charm because of the awesome animalistic abilities and getting to bully everyone when you’re transformed was unmatched.

You play as a warrior chosen by Zeus to rescue Athena from the bad guy. Apologies for not remembering the villain’s name, my memory’s not exactly fresh. All I remember is wanting to kill him when he stole my cool beast form after the first level. And then I did kill him, after a thrilling few hours.

As I mentioned, it’s a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up, except your character is fairly slow and attacks sluggish. This changes when you pick a power-up, which gives you extra muscles at first, but then transforms you into one of the 5 signature beasts. The goal is to maintain this form by not getting hit, and killing enemies with your awesome abilities.

Who remembers Altered Beast? Countless hours of my childhood were sunk into this game.

From throwing around lightning bolts to turning things to stone and thrusting through them with a super kick, it’s mad fun I tell you. 

Altered Beast Needs To Return

You’ll notice I started my reminiscence of Sega’s classic gems with this very game when it’s the only one not returning in the “Retro revival.” Tragic, right? It’s a shame, considering how fun it is. Don’t get me wrong I’m ecstatic about Golden Axe, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio returning, but Altered Beast would’ve been just sublime.

I don’t think Sega has necessarily forgotten about this gem, because I remember seeing it in one of its official presentations, listed in the classic IPs that have potential. If so, I wonder why it wasn’t in the collection. Is the game planned but not revealed yet?

Whatever the case, Sega must give Altered Beast another chance. And no, I’m not talking about the horrible 2005 sequel that got everything about the formula wrong. That was just a bad product, not reflective of the OG’s charm. A true revival of Altered Beast, in the same way Sega plans to bring back other side-scrollers, is what’s needed.

It has already proven itself more than capable after the beautiful Streets of Rage 4. That’s exactly the kind of treatment I want Altered Beast to receive. Sega’s retro revival will always feel like something’s missing without it.

Xbox On Track To Becoming Software Only Company In Future, Says Former PlayStation Exec

Shawn Layden recently appeared on the Kiwi Talkz podcast and was asked to share his two cents on Xbox’s current approach.

The former PlayStation executive quickly acknowledged the benefits of the approach, particularly because of rising development costs in the industry. However, he also noted that this approach would make it difficult for Microsoft to sell Xbox hardware.

With Xbox no longer boasting an exclusive library, its brand value will undoubtedly go down. As per Shawn Layden, Xbox will lack the “FOMO” factor in the future since its content will be available to play everywhere else.

He emphasized the importance of balancing this approach, but Phil Spencer has confirmed that Microsoft is going all-in on third-party gaming. Because of this commitment, Shawn Layden sees Xbox going the same route as Sega.

We’ve seen it before. I was in the business when Sega brought Dreamcast titles to PS2. In time, Sega became a software-only company. It does have historical precedence.

Sega’s exit from the console market paved the way for Xbox’s success in the early 2000s, but it seems the latter is on track to share the same fate. Fortunately, Sega is doing better than ever today.
