The performance of the Ryzen 5 5800X3D was a true success, and it paved the way for more X3D processors in the future. With the release of the Ryzen 7000 series processors, gaming enthusiasts like me had their eyes set on the X3D variants instead. Well, I finally tested the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and oh boy, it’s a beast.
The Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX are fantastic gaming graphics cards. They pack phenomenal raw performance along with a helping hand from AI to bring smooth gaming at a variety of resolutions. Therefore, if you plan to go for either of these graphics cards with gaming in mind, then the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is your best option. Yes, I am calling it even better than the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X or Ryzen 9 7950X3D, and that’s for a good reason.
First up, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D comes with 8 cores and 16 threads to support multi-threading. The core count is the same as the Ryzen 7 7700X, which I have also tested. However, the 7800X3D actually comes with a toned-down base and boost clock speeds of 4.2 GHz and 5.0 GHz, respectively. This is done on purpose. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D features a single die to house the 8 cores, and on top of it is the additional V-Cache die with 64MB capacity. Therefore, combined, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a whopping 96MB of L3 Cache, which is something games drool over to utilize.
The additional L3 cache is exactly why the processor has lower clock speeds. The cache die cannot withstand high voltage, and since it is stacked on top of the silicon die, AMD had to reduce the voltage for stability. As a result, the clock speeds are low, but the TDP is also quite tame at just 120W. In a nutshell, there is a clock speed tradeoff with the L3 cache. But, the clock speeds weren’t reduced a lot, and on the other hand, the L3 cache jumped from 32MB to 96MB. Since games love cache more, the gaming performance of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is unparalleled, making it the best gaming CPU for RX 7900 XTX & RX 7900 XT.
There are two places where the Ryzen 7 7800X3D lacks. First, productivity tasks utilize clock speeds more. As a result, in all of my testing, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D’s productivity benchmarks were mediocre at best. If you’re buying the RX 7900 XTX or the RX 7900 XT to use in your video editing or streaming rig, then there are better CPUs out there. Second, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a locked multiplier, disabling the CPU from being overclocked the traditional way. While there isn’t any lack of performance or reason to overclock the 7800X3D in the first place, your only option is to use the Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer (CO).

The processor strikes the perfect balance between gaming and productivity performance. Furthermore, as part of the Raptor Lake line-up, its platform cost is also better than AMD’s offering.
Let’s go over the specs first. The Core i7-13700K features an 8+8 mix of Performance and Efficient cores. These 8 P-cores alone equate to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D core count, and the additional Efficient cores are like a cherry on top. With combined 24 threads, the P-cores also support Hyper-Threading, making the i7-13700K stand out with its multitasking capabilities. As I said, the i7-13700K nails both gaming and productivity benchmarks, and that’s thanks to its outstanding clock speeds.
The P-cores have a base and boost frequency of 3.40 GHz and 5.30 GHz, and few of them can even reach 5.40 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology. Considering its price tag, the i7-13700K offers quite good value for money since it can handle both gaming and productivity tasks pretty well with the RX 7900 XT or the RX 7900 XTX. In my review of the i7-13700K, I tested the CPU over a series of software to judge its performance, and it did not disappoint me anywhere. Whether it was general tests, rendering tests, or gaming benchmarks, the CPU lived up to its name and impressed me.
However, just like other Raptor Lake processors, the power consumption and temperatures of the i7-13700K are quite up there. High power draw has become quite the norm with most components nowadays, which makes the i7-13700K’s max turbo power of 253W unsurprising. I ran a 30-min Cinebench R23 test on the i7-13700K, and the CPU drew around 210W. Combined with the RX 7900 XTX or the RX 7900 XT, you need to go for a reliable and high-capacity PSU to handle your entire rig.
The temperatures are no different, either. You will have to spend on a high-end AIO or custom liquid cooling setup to cool down the i7-13700K. The max temperature I recorded was 76°C. But, and that’s a big but, I used a custom cooling setup with a 1260mm radiator from AlphaCool, and despite that, the i7-13700K reached 76°C. This should put things into perspective exactly how much thermally inefficient these new processors are.
Being a “K” series chip, the i7-13700K can be overclocked with ease, given that you can cater to its high power draw and thermals. I managed to overclock the processor to around 5.7 GHz (All P-Cores) and 4.6 GHz (All E-Cores). However, you should expect less, like 5.5 GHz on all P-Cores and around 4.4 GHz on all E-Cores with a regular AIO.
Another good thing about the i7-13700K and other Raptor Lake processors, in general, is that they support both DDR4 and DDR5 RAM. Plus, since they use the same LGA1700 socket as the Alder Lake CPUs, you can use your old 600-series motherboard as well. This backward compatibility indeed drives down the overall platform cost, which makes the i7-13700K an even better deal, especially for high-end graphics cards like the RX 7900 XT & RX 7900 XTX.

In all of my tests, the i5-13600K offered a better price-to-performance ratio than any Ryzen offering. I had no issues running AAA titles at 1440p with it. In most of my tests, the processor was going head-to-head with the i7-12700K, which is a good thing.
With respect to other Raptor Lake processors, the i5-13600K is actually power efficient. I ran a 30-minute Cinebench R23, and the processor’s power draw was around 180W, which is on point with its stated max turbo power. However, by i5’s standards, the power consumption is still a bit much. I guess we have to get used to these power figures as every new processor is quite power-hungry. The same goes for its temperatures as well. The i5-13600K is much easier to cool than the i7-13700K. You can get away with a fairly well-built AIO, and the processor will not suffer from thermal throttling.
Just like the i7-13700K, I overclocked the i5-13600K as well. I got the chip to clock at 5.6 GHz (All P-Cores) and 4.4 GHz (E-Cores). These are very good numbers, and I saw a ~9.69% gain in Cinebench R23. As for the power draw, the CPU was consuming around 192W at 81°C. The temperature may seem very impressive at first, but keep in mind that I used a custom water cooling setup, and you will likely get higher figures with a regular AIO.
Apart from the price tag, the i5-13600K is the best CPU for budget RX 7900 XT/XTX build in other ways as well. The processor uses the LGA1700 socket, which means it can work with DDR4 RAM and Intel 600-series chipset motherboards. Therefore, you don’t have to go for the latest components with your RX 7900 XTX or RX 7900 XT build; you can get away with using more budget-oriented components as well.
