Multiplatform Strategy Has Its Benefits And Harms!

Story Highlight
  • Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has argued that Xbox will lose a major advantage if it goes multiplatform.
  • There will arguably be no FOMO strategy for hardware, which has kept many Xbox users interested so far.
  • However, he believes the company stands a chance at succeeding like Sega if it can adapt well enough.

Xbox has been quick to swallow its pride and adapt a controversial multiplatform strategy to secure its future. Now, Former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden thinks Xbox could do well by focusing solely on software, but there are still plenty of risks to consider.

Xbox will have to sacrifice its ‘fear of missing out’ strategy for Xbox consoles if it goes multiplatform.

Why it matters: Ex-PlayStation boss argues that Xbox might succeed but it will lose a major selling point for hardware.

In a Kiwi Talkz podcast interview, Shawn Layden suggests that by going multiplatform, Xbox can no longer rely on the FOMO strategy to draw people to its consoles.

There would be no major incentive for gamers to buy Xbox consoles. However, Shawn thinks rising development costs in the AAA gaming industry justify this new strategy.

What does it do to their brand? It makes the conversation harder to create the FOMO (fear of missing out)

In other words, Xbox consoles might end up losing their biggest selling point if there is no exclusivity left for them. Sega did something similar in the past and has only evolved into a highly successful brand.

‘if you’re not here you’re missing out,’ but if it’s available on all platforms, that’s one of your marketing tactics you can’t use.

Another notable ex-PlayStation executive, Adam Boyes, also applauded Xbox for adopting the multiplatform strategy, knowing the controversies involved.

PlayStation 5 Vs Xbox Series X
Multiple industry figures suggest that PlayStation will soon follow Xbox’s multiplatform strategy.

Regardless, Phil Spencer also recently assured fans that Xbox will continue to focus on hardware as a key component amid its multiplatform endeavors.
