Architectural Differences
- Clock Speeds: The RTX 4070 Ti Super’s clock speeds go much faster compared to the latter. It has a base clock of 2340 MHz and a boost of up to 2610 MHz. The RTX 3090 has a base clock of 1395 MHz and a boost of up to 1695 MHz.
- VRAM: The RTX 3090 offers a massive 24 GB of GDDR6X memory on a 384-bit bus width. In comparison to that, the RTX 4070 Ti Super slightly lags behind with 16 GB GDDR6X memory along with a narrower 256-bit bus width.
- Process Node: The RTX 3090 features an 8 nm processing node, which has been replaced by the 5 nm processing node from the RTX 4070 Ti Super.
- TDP: The RTX 4070 Ti Super comes with a significantly lower TDP of 285 watts, whereas the RTX 3090 has a TDP of 350 watts.
- Other Features: Both GPUs are capable of Ray Tracing. However, the newer architecture of RTX 4070 Ti Super allows it to make use of DLSS 3 and frame generation. The 3090 features the previous version of DLSS ie 2.0.
We previously compared the RTX 4070 Ti Super vs RTX 3080 and the former knocked it out of the park with its competitor to the point where we could easily recommend it over the latter. Now is the time to see how this GPU stacks up against the flagship graphic card from that generation, the RTX 3090.
Gaming Benchmarks – 2160p
Mentioned below is the test bench we utilised for our comparison for today. The test bench is tailored specifically to highlight the performance difference between the graphics cards only, so we can monitor the difference as closely as possible.

- RAM: XPG Lancer RGB 32GB 7200MT/s DDR5
- OS: Windows 11
Cyberpunk 2077
- Cyberpunk 2077 seemed to get on the nerves of both our GPUs as the game gets fairly demanding at 2160p. The RTX 4070 Ti Super performed 25% better by yielding 67 fps. The 3090, on the other hand, provided 52 fps.
- The 1% lows of the RTX 4070 Ti Super matched the frame rate of the RTX 3090 at 52 fps. The 1% lows of the latter were 28% behind at 39 fps, instigating clunkier gameplay.
Red Dead Redemption 2
- Red Dead Redemption 2 ran significantly better on both GPUs compared to the last title. The RTX 4070 Ti Super provided an average of 89 fps. Roughly 14% behind was the RTX 3090, providing a 77 fps average.
- Props to the RTX 3090 which manages to close the performance gap to only 6% in terms of 1% lows by providing 71 fps. The RTX 4070 Ti Super was still ahead at around 76 fps.
Watch Dogs Legion
- Watch Dogs Legion elevates the performance gap to a staggering 27% in favour of the RTX 4070 Ti Super, as it makes good use of modern hardware. It managed to provide 96 fps on average, whereas the RTX 3090 maxed out at 73 fps.
- The 1% lows saw a similar difference of around 26.5%, with the RTX 4070 Ti Super coming on top. This time it provided 81 fps. Compared to that, the RTX 3090 provided 62 fps.
Horizon Zero Dawn
- Horizon Zero Dawn was lighter to run for our graphics cards in comparison to the previous title. The RTX 4070 Ti Super was 21% ahead this time, yielding us an average of 122 fps compared to the 98 fps average of the RTX 3090.
- The RTX 3090 crushed the RTX 4070 Ti Super in terms of 1% lows this time. It was roughly 27% ahead, by providing 82 fps. In comparison to that, the RTX 4070 Ti Super could not go beyond 62 fps.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla saw one of the smaller performance differences compared to what we normally saw throughout the benchmark. The RTX 4070 Ti Super ended up performing 17% better by giving us a stable 88 fps experience compared to the 74 fps average provided by the RTX 3090.
- The difference in 1% lows was even smaller than average fps. The RTX 4070 Ti Super was now only 10% ahead. It provided 1% lows of around 71 fps. Slightly behind was the RTX 3090, providing 64 1% low fps.
Doom Eternal
- The Doom Eternal ended up being a treat for both our competitors, as even at max settings, both graphics cards were providing a high refresh-rate experience. The RTX 4070 Ti super was at 215 fps, whereas the RTX 3090 was at 200 fps.
- Once again, the RTX 3090 ended up outperforming the RTX 4070 Ti when it came to 1% lows. This time, it was at 188 fps. Compared to that, the RTX 4070 Ti Super maxed out at 168 fps.
A Plague Tale Requiem
- A Plague Tale Requiem was a tough nut to crack for both of our competitors, as their average fps dropped down significantly. The RTX 4070 Ti Super was averaging at around 58 fps, and the RTX 3090 was at around 52 fps.
- The difference in 1% lows came out at around 15% in favour of the RTX 4070 Ti Super, which was now averaging around 55 fps, compared to 47 fps by the RTX 3090.
The RTX 3090 might appear beefier in the first place and might also have better specs on paper, however, when it comes to the RTX 4070 Ti Super, it lags behind severely in performance. As per our testing, the RTX 4070 Ti completely wiped the floor with RTX 3090 when it came to average fps, as indicated by the benchmarks earlier. It was roughly 16.4% ahead as per the data of 7 games tested at 2160p resolution. Both graphics cards were fairly close when it came down to 1% lows, with a difference of 2.5%.

In terms of thermal efficiency, our testing indicates that the RTX 4070 Ti Super ended up running roughly 8.33% cooler than the RTX 3090. This makes it easily the more thermally efficient out of the two graphics cards while also landing on the preference of the gamers that tend to reside in the warmer climate zones.

At launch price, the price difference is massive. Luckily, over the years, the price of RTX 3090 has gone down significantly. Sadly, it is still 6% more expensive than the RTX 4070 Ti Super. This makes the situation infinitely worse for the RTX 3090, which has not been able to justify its price tag throughout the benchmark.
What We Recommend
RTX 4070 Ti Super: If you want a newer architecture, longer driver support, better gaming performance and lower temperatures while also spending less money, then RTX 4070 Ti Super is recommended for you. It is not a flashy flagship GPU with enormous VRAM. But the numbers don’t lie. It is better in every aspect.
RTX 3090: If you want a flagship graphics card and your work can benefit from more VRAM and you don’t mind going for a generation older GPU, then RTX 3090 is recommended for you. It can still handle AAA titles decently. It does cost a bit more but that’s the price you pay for a premium flagship GPU.
After spending our fair share of time with both GPUs, we can attest that both of these are very capable GPUs for gaming. The RTX 4070 Ti Super is an easier recommendation out of the two for us, but the RTX 3090 does have its merits as well. Now, it is up to you to decide which one is better suited to be a part of your rig.
Frequently Asked Questions
The performance difference between Ada Lovelace and Ampere GPUs is incremental at best. However, that’s not where the new architecture shines. The main selling point of this is the DLSS 3 and Frame Generation which enhances performance significantly.
The RTX 3090 is not that old. It’s the flagship GPU of the previous series launched by Nvidia. However, the RTX 4070 Ti Super came out 3 years and 4 months later than the RTX 3090.
Nvidia worked with Samsung to get the 8nm processing nodes of the RTX 30 series, whereas TSMC bore the responsibility of making the 5nm processing nodes of the RTX 40 series.
