PS5 Users Upset As Sony Increases Price of DualSense Controllers

Story Highlight
  • Sony has recently increased the price of DualSense controllers, angering the PS5 users in the process.
  • The $5 price increase has come as a surprise since controllers often receive a price reduction over time.
  • Many fans are demanding Sony for answers, as others are left complaining about the quality of DualSense.

The DualSense controller lineup is quite popular in the PlayStation ecosystem and for all the right reasons. The advanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, along with the best customizability features, offer an unforgettable gaming experience. However, all that comes for a price, and it is certainly not cheap to grab one anymore.

Sony has quietly bumped up the price tag of DualSense controllers by $5 in many regions around the globe. This choice has left PS users puzzled and caused them to get riled up.

Why it matters: Many users expected a reduction in DualSense pricing since 4 years of its lifespan have passed. However, the unwelcomed price hike has made the PS5 users furious, as they are left questioning Sony’s decision behind the scenes.

Sony PlayStation 5
DualSense controllers are almost a necessity for the PS5 to get the best out of the Sony ecosystem.

Several Reddit forums are filled with users discussing hot topics with fervour. A plethora of them are upset since they expected the price to be reduced. They are now left questioning the giant conglomerate for an official explanation.

“This seems like the first console generation where there isn’t a price decrease on these items and the consoles themselves.”

A price hike would not be a big concern, but costs for controllers and consoles are usually reduced into several years of their lifespans. However, the opposite has happened—even with the PS5 since it suffered a notable price hike in Japan.

PS5 With DualSense Controller
The DualSense controllers often need to be replaced after half a year because of stick drift issues.

Amid criticisms, upset users have requested Sony to create more durable DualSense controllers instead that match the price. They are notorious for suffering from stick drift issues as early as the first couple of months after being bought. Due to this recurring issue, some users have already bought the controller three times.

Sony has yet to issue an official statement addressing the highly criticized and unexpected DualSense price hike. For now, the gaming giant is gearing up to reveal the highly anticipated PS5 Pro, which might also receive some criticism regarding the price.

Helldivers 2 Dev Asking For Player Feedback Amid Concord Failure

Story Highlight
  • Helldivers 2 is one of the most successful games of 2024.
  • However, Sony decided to add the PSN restriction to this game, which caused a massive controversy.
  • Now, after Concord failed, Sony is conducting a survey to ask for fans’ feedback, which shows that the gaming giant is concerned about the live service model.

Helldivers 2 is one of the surprising games of 2024. The game shocked everyone on release as it attracted hundreds of thousands of players. It sold over 12 million copies is just 3 months which shows the success of this live service title.

However, Sony added a PSN restriction, instantly making the game the center of controversy. Due to this restriction, 85% of the player count was dropped on Steam. Lately, there haven’t been many players playing this live service shooter, and the developer has started asking fans for their feedback amid Concord’s failure.

Why it matters: Concord is the biggest failure of 2024, as the game went offline just 15 days after the release, so Arrowhead Game Studios might be concerned about its game.

Please share your feedback about Helldivers 2 in this survey!
byu/ArrowheadGS inHelldivers

The official Reddit account of Arrowhead Game Studios shared the survey on Reddit to ask for fans’ feedback. The survey seems to have been conducted by the PlayStation research team, and after reaching a certain quota, the developer pulled out the link.

Fans are trolling the developer in the comments section, as Helldivers 2 has been in a very critical situation lately. Recently we have witnessed the biggest failure of this year, Concord. It was a live service shooter so it makes sense why the developer is conducting the survey now.

Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is The Top Paid Game By Revenue in H1 2024

Fans are also pointing this out in the comments section in a rather funny way. Zegram_Ghart on Reddit asked why Sony wanted feedback on one of its highest-grossing live service titles. The continues to extend the troll by saying something could have happened recently to make them nervous about a live service game.

What the user is talking about is pretty obvious. Also, fans are claiming the survey to be stupid and wondering if the shareholder meeting is coming up next. Helldivers 2 currently has less than 10K players on Steam. The game is by no means a failure, but it could have had a much better fate.

PlayStation Reportedly Facing Another Round of Layoffs

Story Highlight
  • A Sony Interactive Entertainment employee has revealed they’ve been laid off by the company.
  • This is part of a round of layoffs that Sony hasn’t officially revealed soon.
  • If more layoffs are planned, we can expect a statement from PlayStation soon.

PlayStation has been under fire ever since the launch of Concord. While they did make it up a bit with Astro Bot, the drama with Concord will undoubtedly hurt the company. According to a new post, PlayStation could face more layoffs soon

Why it matters: We saw PlayStation sales decline, and Sony raised the console prices in certain regions along with the Dual Sense controller. With limited launches this year, Sony could also face lower stock values, leading to layoffs.

PlayStation Environment Artist reveals they have been laid off by the company

Ryan Jewell, an Environmental Artist who worked with Sony Interactive Entertainment for over 9 years has been laid off by the company. He states that this is part of a round of layoffs at the company. Interestingly Sony hasn’t officially announced them yet.

After almost a decade of bringing digital worlds to life at Sony, I’ve recently been let go due to a round of layoffs.

-Ryan Jewell

Now, it isn’t clear why this round has affected a long-standing SIE employee. The majority of the failure came from the Firewalk Studio, which technically is a part of the company’s first-party studios. So they could face the same situation.

PlayStation
PlayStation studios could be looking at another round of layoffs

But if PlayStation is indeed planning layoffs, and it has already begun, we might be officially hearing about them soon. The very latest round came back in July when over 220 employees from Bungie were laid off by Sony.

This unfortunate trend doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon. Rocksteady also recently laid off many employees due to Suicide Squad’s failure. Insiders have predicted that this will result in much shorter AAA games moving forward.

Diablo 4 Generated Over $150 Million Through Microtransactions

Story Highlight
  • According to a LinkedIn post, Diablo 4 generated a massive $150 Million in revenue through microtransactions.
  • The game was heavily criticized for overpriced cosmetics, which even exceeded the price of the base game.
  • It was also review-bombed for this reason but has still managed to record huge MTX sales.

Diablo 4 was a massive release for Xbox. The title quickly became the fastest-selling Blizzard game ever and made over $666 Million in revenue in less than a week. However, one big gripe everyone had with Diablo 4 was microtransactions.

Despite so much criticism, players have actively invested in microtransactions, which has taken the overall MTX revenue to over $150 Million.

Why it matters: Even before the release, players were already dreading the microtransactions. However, this new development again raises the issue that modern gamers are too accepting of microtransactions.

Diablo 4 made over $150 million in revenue just from the microtransactions

Diablo 4 was heavily review-bombed just for this reason right after launch. However, the thing fans were criticising this game for has become its biggest strength. Even with the mobile game Diablo Immortal, Blizzard earned a huge $24 Million in revenue.

Leading the monetization strategy of the store and roadmap planning which have driven over $150M MTX lifetime revenue

-Senior Product Manager

The news comes from the LinkedIn account of the Senior Product Manager for the game. They are leading the monetization strategy for the Diablo 4 cosmetic store which includes personalized bundles and other offers.

The microtransactions included in the game are so ridiculous that some bundles even cost more than the base game itself. Even that hasn’t stopped players from heavily investing in them, leading to a significant chunk of revenue from the cosmetic store.

Diablo 4 Microtransactions
Some Diablo 4 cosmetics even exceeded the price of the base game

In addition, the post mentions that the game has made a gargantuan $1 billion in revenue since its release. It is also the most profitable game in the entire franchise and has had a solid player base for over a year since its launch.

However, it is concerning to see how much investment has been made in microtransactions. In-game purchases that exceed the price of the game have also been criticized, and this doesn’t give a strong reason for them to be eliminated in the future.

The Fall Of Concord Should Set A Much-Needed Precedent

Story Highlight
  • After staying online for 15 whole days, Concord has been put to rest.
  • The fall of this generic live service mess is a welcome event and should serve as a warning for Sony.
  • The gaming industry needs to move away from these soulless, predatory concepts and needs to embrace creativity.

Over the years, the video game industry has undergone many changes, some good, some not so good. Now, due to several factors, gaming has essentially stagnated. With the big-budget AAAs and their extremely small margin for error, experimentation has ceased.

All we’re getting are the same old AAAs, or worse, ridiculous live services. A good example of the latter is what Sony did not too long ago with Concord. It was a pristine example of everything wrong with today’s video game industry.

Why it matters: The gaming industry has doubled down on live services lately, and this failure needs to remind them why it’s no longer a desired concept.

Concord Didn’t Even Last A Month

Wait, “was?” It’s no mistake, my friends. Concord is history, and I can’t tell you how glad I am to see this. No offense intended to anyone who worked hard on this game. I genuinely appreciate their efforts, but this was the wrong project to put work on.

Ever since Concord was announced, I’ve been a stark opposer of this game. The first look left a bad aftertaste, and subsequent stuff just made it worse. Hollow gameplay elements, generic hero shooter designs, needless “woke” concepts, and political correctness mixed in, it was a total mess.

Thankfully, I wasn’t alone in thinking this. This game might not have been as hated had it been released a few years ago, but with how much the live service concept has been overused and exhausted these days, people’s tolerance for generic and uninspired cash grabs is at an all-time low.

All it received was opposition the entire time between its reveal and release. Things didn’t change after release, as the game barely reached a 1000-peak player count. No one wanted anything to do with this mess. Ultimately, the game was put to rest on September 06, 2024. It lasted exactly 15 days.

A Lesson To Be Learned From Concord

Do you know what would’ve been even worse than getting Concord? Had it succeeded and prompted everyone to double down on these ridiculous projects? For once, I’m genuinely grateful for this community and its collective hatred for something.

I feel like Sony losing hundreds of millions over Concord was a necessary scenario if the gaming industry were to change. The massive corporation needs to learn that its strategy is extremely flawed, and worthless titles like this will not be tolerated.

Hopefully Concord's inevitable failure will make Sony rethink how it approaches MP games.
byu/-MERC-SG-17 inConcordGame

Dumping a ridiculous amount of budget on a soulless game like this was Sony’s fault in the first place. Plus, this case should be an eye-opener for how unsustainable this big-budget AAA model, and “hoping to earn big bucks from live services” is.

I hope this blissful event serves as an example of what not to do and forces Sony to scrap all the other live services it has in the works, too.

Uninspiring gameplay was but one of the problems (Image by PlayStation)
Uninspiring gameplay was but one of the problems

If Even Sony Can’t Get Away With It, No One Can

Besides, it’s not just a warning for Sony. The entire gaming industry should take this event seriously. The failure of Concord shows that if a massive company with a substantial fan following like Sony can’t sell a game like this, it means there’s something genuinely wrong with this strategy.

I genuinely hope Concord was a good enough lesson
byu/Caninystic inArcRaiders

Live service is not an “easy money-making opportunity” as it’s made out to be. Take a look at Concord; hundreds of millions are down the drain. How will a live service earn if there’s no one willing to play it? Especially a title as horribly executed as Concord. Live service isn’t the problem, these soulless implementations are.

Concord had its priorities wrong (Image by u/Turbostrider27)
Concord had its priorities wrong

Regardless, this should be a wake-up call to step away from the genre. Hero shooters and live service had their time, but it’s gone now. Everyone involved in live services should heed this warning. The fate of Concord is what awaits all others of its ilk.

The Need For Creativity

So, if live services and big-budget blockbusters with similar designs aren’t the answer, what is? That, my friends, is looking for something different and unique. Something that doesn’t cost as much to make and is filled with fun and creative stuff to do.

Rather than vast open worlds, cinematic AAAs, and more live services, it’s time to look for creativity and imaginative freedom. No “political correctness” and forced diversity, no “more of the same,” something that stands out and prioritizes fun and engaging gameplay above all.

Sony Can’t Be Serious About Not Having Enough IPs, Right?

Story Highlight
  • Sony’s CFO has claimed that the company doesn’t have enough original IPs.
  • That can’t be further from the truth, as the tech giant is sitting on a treasure trove of legendary franchises.
  • Instead of issuing self-depreciating statements, Sony should revisit some of these gems.

The ideal platform for gaming has been an age-old question, one that every gamer has pondered upon. When multiple options spring up, choosing one can be tough, but one factor takes precedence over all others: the kind of games.

A platform without exclusives cannot stay relevant for long. In fact, PlayStation is so preferred precisely because of its exclusives. However, I can’t say the same for the current PS5 era devoid of impactful first-party exclusives. Still, that doesn’t erase all the good stuff Sony has access to.

Why it matters: Sony owns countless gems that more than deserve to be revived, yet the company claims not to have enough IPs.

The “Not Enough IPs” Claim Of Sony Baffles Me

The current era might be barren, but it wasn’t always like this. Sony, in the past, was responsible for some of the best games of its time. However, that’s what you and I believe. The tech giant itself thinks otherwise.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki recently released a rather peculiar statement. He mentioned that Sony doesn’t have access to enough original IPs, whether for games, films, or animation

Let me ask you this: can you believe this nonsense? Apologies, let me put this another way. Does Sony seriously believe this? The films and anime part aside, I’d like to think Sony has some pretty impressive franchises. Why this insulting statement, then?

Guess Sony somehow forgot their IPs from the PS1, PS2 and PS3 era 😑
byu/Its-yea-boi-Bender inMauLer

Can This Treasure Trove Be Ignored?

So, let’s beat this illogical point with logic, then. Gravity Rush, Parappa the Rapper, Infamous, Ape Escape, God of War, Jak and Daxter, Astro, Killzone, Siren, Resistance, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Knack, Syphon Filter, Warhawk, the list goes on and on.

Are these not considered good, Sony? (Image by Tech4Gamers)
Are these not considered good, Sony? (Image by Tech4Gamers)

Do you mean to tell me all of these are not “enough IPs?” How can Sony even say that? I still find that hard to believe. Perhaps if it takes a break from remaking The Last of Us, it can see the worth of these undeniable gems.

I am so tired of Sony neglecting all of their amazing IPs… Infamous, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal, Jack & Daxter, etc…
byu/ThiccNickGaming inTwistedMetal

All of Japan Studio’s IPs, like Gravity Rush, Ape Escape, Astro, Siren, Knack, etc., were extremely creative gems the gaming industry needs these days. Is the reception of Astro Bot not proof of this? Sony even has Bloodborne practically at its disposal, as FromSoftware is more than willing.

There are little franchises that capture the true essence of an OP superhero in a freely interactable sandbox like Infamous. Creative platformers like Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper will always be appreciated, and Sony could do something truly magical with a new Killzone, Resistance, SOCOM, or Warhawk.

It’s An Insult To These Gems

I didn’t even include the more popular titles of the PS4 era. Games like Horizon, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, etc. are still immensely popular. But no, Sony would much rather pursue a live service only to fail.

PS4 had a great lineup (Image by Tech4Gamers)
PS4 had a great lineup (Image by Tech4Gamers)

I have many qualms with Sony’s current direction, but the past is a different story. Saying, “I don’t have enough stuff to work on,” all the while sitting on these magnificent gems is nothing but an insult to these games’ legacy I won’t tolerate.

It’s like a parent refusing to acknowledge their own kids despite their achievements. Imagine how frustrating and infuriating that would be for the kids. Sony’s doing the exact same thing.

Besides, it’s hurting no one but its own reputation and the feelings of its fans. Imagine waiting for a new Infamous or Syphon Filter for years and then hearing Sony say it has nothing to work on. Yeah, that’ll be both heartbreaking and enraging.

I'll give anything for a new entry to these (Image by Tech4Gamers)
I’ll give anything for a new entry to these (Image by Tech4Gamers)

Play to your Strengths, Sony

Thus, instead of antagonizing its player base, Sony needs to make good use of the treasure it possesses. Do you know what makes Astro Bot such a big deal? It has meticulous and beloved references and easter eggs to Sony’s glorious past, a reminder of what gaming embodied back in the day.

A inFAMOUS Easter Egg in Astro's Playroom!
byu/ClaimSlow2743 ininfamous

Claiming this while Astro Bot is currently proving otherwise is pretty ironic if you ask me. Astro should be proof enough of how attractive these past works are; Sony can accomplish greatness with some of these long-abandoned franchises

This is why I believe the proper course of action is to revive some of these works and let the people be the judge, instead of more live services or saying “We don’t have enough stuff.”

Ubisoft Faces Pressure to Go Private as Share Prices Plummet

Story Highlight
  • The decline in Ubisoft’s stock price has shaken investor confidence in Ubisoft’s future.
  • A minority shareholder, AJ Investments, is pushing Ubisoft to go private, believing its shares are undervalued.
  • The shareholder suggests a cost-cutting plan and advises replacing the company’s CEO, Yves Guillemot.

Ubisoft is under growing pressure from a major minority shareholder to go private because its stock price has dropped significantly. This push comes as Ubisoft deals with several problems, including disappointing game releases and a general decrease in investor trust.

The company’s stock fell to a 10-year low after its new game, Star Wars Outlaws, was poorly received. This has led to a drop in investor confidence, with Ubisoft’s shares closing at €13.67 on Monday.

Why it matters: Ubisoft’s Star Wars game didn’t meet expectations, resulting in lower sales. This disappointment has shaken investor confidence, making the idea of going private more attractive to some shareholders.

Ubisoft Stock
Ubisoft Stock plummeted by over 80% in the past five years.

The company’s problems are due to various issues, such as disappointing sales, and worries about management and strategy. Ongoing troubles, especially with major titles like Skull and Bones and Star Wars Outlaws, have worsened things.

In light of these circumstances, AJ Investments, a hedge fund that is increasing its ownership of Ubisoft, has publicly advised the company to go private.

The investor believes Ubisoft’s shares are currently undervalued and should be worth between €40 and €45 each. In a letter to Ubisoft’s management, AJ Investments voiced worries about the company’s future and criticized its current leaders.

The hedge fund claims Ubisoft’s leaders are too focused on short-term profits, neglecting long-term planning. The investor argues that this focus harms both shareholders and the quality of the gaming experience Ubisoft provides.

Ubisoft Turns off Comments
Ubisoft was forced to turn off the comments on the Star Wars Outlaws trailer as the company continues to face backlash.

Along with calling for Ubisoft to go private, AJ Investments has suggested a detailed cost-cutting plan to match industry standards. The hedge fund recommends that Ubisoft streamline its staff, noting that the company has already made layoffs in recent years.

The investor has also called for replacing Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, with new leadership to help steer the company towards a more stable future.

Ubisoft has not yet officially responded to the idea of going private. However, the Guillemot family, which owns a large share of the company, will be key in deciding what happens next.

While the Guillemots have traditionally resisted selling or making big changes, the current situation might lead them to rethink their position.

PS5 Pro Should Not Cost Over $600 For Digital Edition, Fan Poll Concludes

Story Highlight
  • Fans have discussed the PS5 Pro’s pricing structure in a new poll.
  • Over half of the voters expect the console to cost at least $600.
  • They argue that PlayStation has only increased prices this generation, so the mid-gen refresh is unlikely to be cheap.

The PS5 Pro will finally show up for the first time soon. Mark Cerny is set to host a 10-minute technical presentation, and leaks confirm that PlayStation will unveil the much-anticipated mid-gen refresh tomorrow.

Ahead of this reveal, there has been plenty of chatter about an all-time high price for this console. Fans have also discussed this price, with most suggesting that Sony will charge more than $500 for the Digital Edition.

Why it matters: PlayStation has kept its prices lower than expected since it debuted the original PS3 model for an egregious MSRP of $500-600 in 2006. It seems the gaming giant will soon return to a similar pricing structure.

PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro Price Discussion Poll via Resetera

Nearly 1,000 gamers on Resetera recently voted on the price of the PS5 Pro. Sony’s pricing of the PS4 Pro suggests that the console should start from $550, which would mark a $100 price uplift over the current Digital Edition.

However, past leaks have suggested otherwise. Fans believe the console will start from $600, with nearly half of the voters picking this option. Around 10% even foresee the PS5 Pro Digital Edition costing as much as $700.

Even the $600 starting price would be quite steep for a digital-only console. The gaming giant will likely charge an additional $100 for the Disc Edition, potentially pushing the price to $700 for those who want the full package.

Fans argue that Sony has already raised console prices multiple times this generation across various regions. They believe that the gaming giant will be able to justify such high prices since the mid-gen refresh will target a niche audience.

As such, fans believe those interested in getting the best performance on consoles would be fine with paying at least $600.

PlayStation 5
The PS5 Is Already Great For Most Games | Image via Tech4Gamers

While the actual price is still anybody’s guess, Sony’s recent moves don’t seem encouraging for those hoping to buy the PS5 Pro at a decent price. Earlier today, the gaming giant increased the cost of its DualSense controllers by $5, setting a new precedent for its accessories.

Anyhow, fans won’t have to wait too long for all the details. Mark Cerny’s technical presentation is less than 24 hours away, and official details about the console should follow shortly after this reveal.

Ubisoft Has Lost Over 80% of Its Value In Past 5 Years

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft was one of the best developers back in the golden age of gaming.
  • However, the developer has stopped listening to its fandom and caters to the modern audience.
  • Due to recent failures, the giant has lost 80% of its value in the past few years, and the situation seems to be getting even worse.

Ubisoft was once a powerhouse in the gaming industry. The studio was mainly known for the Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry Series. However, these aren’t the only iconic franchises from this developer.

Back people really liked Ubisoft’s work, but now things are a lot different. It has been years since this developer made a good game, and it is hurting the brand. After a lot of poor releases, Ubisoft has lost 80% of its value in the last five years, and the situation seems to be getting worse.

Why it matters: Lately, Ubisoft hasn’t been implementing feedback from the fans and is focusing way too much on the modern audience.

Ubisoft Stock
Ubisoft Stock Plummets By Over 80% In Past Five Years

It is no wonder why Ubisoft is in this condition. Having the stock value drop by over 80% is nowhere near close to being ideal. This is the consequence of not listening to a dedicated fandom that has been playing its games forever.

The recent Assassin’s Creed Mirage didn’t really click with the fandom, so the developer should aim to create a better game. However, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows is already the most criticised game of 2024, and it hasn’t been released yet.

The game is still the centre of criticism, and this controversy isn’t going to end anytime soon. Regarding its latest game, Star Wars Ourlaws, it has proven to be a failure. The director isn’t happy with the review scores, and the stocks saw a massive dip.

Ubisoft is currently in a very concerning situation, and this is likely to escalate. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed game is unlikely to save the developer. We do hope the gaming giant recovers from this situation, as it would be sad to see an iconic developer going down.

Ubisoft is also focusing on Assassin’s Creed Remakes, and if it doesn’t alter the game to satisfy the modern audience, then it has a chance to make a comeback. The giant houses over 20K employees, so the situation is pretty serious right now. We might get to see major layoffs soon, too.

The Forever Winter Interview – New Take On Survival Horror

Story Highlight
  • Forever Winter is set to release on 24 September.
  • The game takes a unique approach to the survival horror genre
  • Ahead of this release, we spoke with developers from Fun Dog Studios to learn more about their work.

The Forever Winter is an upcoming survival horror shooter with co-op elements. Adding a unique spin on the genre, the team puts you in the shoes of an average and vulnerable character instead of the typical main character.

Fun Dog Studios embarked on an exciting journey with this project in 2022 and has been working on this tactical shooter to give fans a fresh, terrifying experience. The game is currently in early access, and the official release is in just a couple of weeks.

To delve further into the team’s approach to survival horror, we recently interviewed the developers at Fun Dog Studios. During our interview, we went over the rogue-lite elements, the team’s journey, and more.

Forever Winter Image
Forever Winter is an Upcoming Survival Horror With Co-Op Elements
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the team at Fun Dog Studios?

Fun Dog Studios: Formed in 2022, Fun Dog Studios has grown to 30 full-time game developers and is fully remote. From a design perspective, we believe gaming needs to be harder to be fun, worth your time and your money. No one tells stories about beating the boss on their first try!

How did you go about deciding the player’s role in the overall story? Why make the playable character a random person instead of, say, a member of the warring factions?

Fun Dog Studios: Any other game would position the player as the chosen one, the only one who can stop the war. The Forever Winter is not that game. In our world, you’re not the hero – you’re a survivor, and you have to act like it. This shift in positioning also helps reinforce the concept at the heart of the game: going in guns blazing isn’t always the best option. The odds are stacked against the player – it’s adapt or die.

Can you explain how the rogue-lite elements play into the overall gameplay loop?

Fun Dog Studios: The Forever Winter’s dynamic environments and AI make it so no two runs are the exact same. And while you’re constantly building your skills and learning the game’s rhythm, you’re never too good to die. And if your squad dies, you lose everything – resources are gone, and you start the run anew. Best way to avoid this? Build up a stash back at the base to stockpile resources for later sessions. Or just try to not die.

Since this is a post-apocalyptic world and the experience is compared to survival horror, how limited are the resources? How much of your time is spent collecting ammo, supplies, etc?

Fun Dog Studios: Limited resources are just that: limited. When you die, you lose everything – say goodbye to the gear, the ammunition and the supplies you’d gained. More important than any bullet, though, is the water. Without it, you and all other scavengers die – and there’s a ticking clock that tells you exactly how much you have left. Find and retrieve water before your supplies dwindle, or it’s game over.

The post-apocalyptic setting has already been explored numerous times in past games. Does that make it challenging to tackle the setting in new games?

Fun Dog Studios: We’re a team of artists, so we are never short on fresh ideas. The beauty of The Forever Winter’s world is that the narrative benefits the setting itself. Every day, the war takes the land apart, and every night, a rapidly decaying AI puts it back together again. This concept allowed us to constantly push the boundaries of what the world could look like – nothing is set in stone.

Whether you opt for solo play or co-op, you will most likely find The Forever Winter experience terrifying till the end. The game is set to release on 24 Sep 2024, and we wish the team the best of luck as this release draws nearer. We would also like to thank the developers for taking the time to answer our questions.

Seasonic Vertex GX-1000

Best ATX 3.0 PSU For RX 7900 XTX

Form Factor: ATX | Wattage: 1000W | Efficiency Rating: 80 PLUS Gold | Modularity: Full Modular | ATX 3.0: Yes

Pros

  • Future-proof
  • Japanese Capacitors
  • High Capacity
  • Durable

Cons

  • Expensive

First off, the power supply is ATX 3.0 compatible, meaning that it has an additional 12VHPWR cable that can provide up to 600W of power. One thing about the RX 7900 XTX and the rest of the Radeon 7000-series graphics cards is that they are not ATX 3.0 compatible, unlike NVIDIA’s RTX 4000-series. However, getting an ATX 3.0 compatible PSU is really good for future-proofing. Furthermore, the Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 has nailed the efficiency rating admirably with its 80 PLUS Gold certification.

Looking inside the PSU, the Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 uses the well-known Japanese 105°C Aluminum Capacitors. Japan knows how to make the most reliable and durable capacitors, and that’s why their capacitors are considered the benchmark for reliability. The Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 also relies on a 135mm Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan for cooling. An FDB fan generates less heat and noise when compared to a conventional ball-bearing fan. Furthermore, it also consumes less power while providing optimal cooling.

Buy It If

✅You want top-performance and future-proofing: The Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 can handle an extreme gaming PC with the RX 7900 XTX easily. Plus, its ATX 3.0 compatibility, massive 1000W capacity, durable build quality, and 10-year warranty make it very future-proof, and that’s what I liked the most about it.

Don't Buy It If

❌You are on a budget: The power supply comes with a heavy price tag. However, it is completely worth it because this investment will last you for years to come.

What Makes It The Best ATX 3.0 PSU For RX 7900 XTX?

You can get other ATX 3.0 power supplies in this budget as well. But none of them feature the reliability, durability, and support of Seasonic, and that’s what makes the Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 the Best ATX 3.0 PSU For RX 7900 XTX.

Corsair RM850e

Best Budget PSU For RX 7900 XTX

Form Factor: ATX | Wattage: 850W | Efficiency Rating: 80 PLUS Gold | Modularity: Full Modular | ATX 3.0: No

Pros

  • Very Affordable
  • ATX 3.0
  • Solid Performance

Cons

  • No 12VHPWR native connector
  • A Bit Noisy

Since the RX 7900 XTX has a recommended wattage of 800W, the minimum best PSU for it should have a wattage capacity of 850W. Hence, with the Corsair RM850e, you won’t have any wattage issues at all. The PSU is also ATX 3.0 compliant, although it does not include a 12VHPWR connector. This should not be that big of a deal because the 7900 XTX does not require the connector to begin with. On the upside, our test results showed great efficiency at 92.11% and a max ripple of just 14.4mV, both very impressive figures.

Another way Corsair made the RM850e so affordable is by skipping the famous Japanese 105°C Capacitors. It can be offputting if you compare the RM850e with other (expensive) power supplies. But Corsair has not entirely cheaper out on the internals. The capacitors are still quite reliable and industrial-grade, ensuring that the PSU works at its best for a long time. After all, the PSU has an MTBF of 100,000 hours, which translates to around 11.4 years.

Arsalan Shakil, our expert in power supplies, tested the Corsair RM850e, and this is what he said in his review:

The Corsair RM850e is an affordable ATX 3.0 PSU perfect for budget-conscious gamers, delivering solid performance and reliability. While it uses non-Japanese capacitors and a rifle-bearing fan, it still offers impressive efficiency and acceptable voltage regulation. Its compact, fully modular design makes it versatile for ATX builds.

Buy It If

✅You don’t plan on spending too much: The best thing about the RM850e is its price. The PSU is very affordable when put next to some other 850W power supplies in the market. Yet, it offers decent power for the RX 7900 XTX with utmost reliability and durability.

Don't Buy It If

❌You are not a fan of PSU noise: Given that it’s an 850W PSU, you may hear it a bit more than other high-wattage power supplies, but it is not a deal breaker.

What Makes It The Best Budget PSU For RX 7900 XTX?

You can easily get other power supplies in the same price range as the Corsair RM850e. But none of them offers the same feature set as the RM850e without compromising on reliability, and that’s what makes the Corsair RM850e the Best Budget PSU For RX 7900 XTX.

Cons

  • Noisy at 50% load

If you’re looking for a compact power supply to match the RX 7900 XTX, the Corsair SF1000L might be your best bet due to its impeccable efficiency, decent 1,000W capacity, high build quality, low pricing, and impressive overclocking performance. I loved the PSU’s modularity and the fact that you can use an SFX-to-ATX bracket if you change your chassis in the future.

Honestly, there’s not much to dislike about this power supply except for its noise levels. Not only does it have a Standard+ Cybenetics rating, but even during our testing, the power supply had a noise level of 41.62dB(A) at 115V AC input. Besides that, the voltage regulation is very tight, and although it’s rated 80+ Gold, it reached Platinum-level efficiency on our test bench. However, its outrageous voltage ripple performance makes it truly stand out, going up to 12.0mV at 100% load, making it ideal for extreme overclocking.

Our PSU expert, Arsalan Shakil, was in absolute awe while testing the power supply. Here’s what he commented in his review:

The Corsair SF1000L PSU is an SFL power supply that exceeds expectations with its performance and efficiency. Slightly larger than SFX PSUs, it offers better results under max load due to improved heat dissipation. It is designed for high-end, power-hungry builds, with impressive cable management and high quality internals.

Buy It If
✅ You want an affordable SFF PSU that won’t croak: If you’re looking for a decently-priced SFF power supply that fits perfectly with the RX 7900 XTX, has a high build quality, and won’t cause problems even if you overclock a lot, then I recommend purchasing the Corsair SF1000L power supply.
Don't Buy It If
❌ You want silent operation: I don’t recommend purchasing the Corsair SF1000L if you want silent operation because this PSU makes a lot of noise even at 50% load. During our testing, it went up to 41.62dB(A) at 115V AC input, making it considerably louder than its competitors.

What Makes It The Best Compact PSU For RX 7900 XTX?

The Corsair SF1000L is one of the best SFF power supplies I have tested, providing outstanding efficiency well beyond its 80+ Gold rating. Moreover, it has a high build quality, impressive overclocking possibilities, and a low price. Also, the SFX-to-ATX bracket makes it a game changer, making it the best compact PSU for RX 7900 XTX.

PRO TIP: If you’re using an ATX chassis, don’t forget to install the SFX-to-ATX bracket so the cables don’t fall short.

MSI A1000G PCIE5

Best Value PSU for RX 7900 XTX

Form Factor: ATX | Wattage: 1000W | Efficiency Rating: 80 PLUS Gold | Modularity: Full Modular | ATX 3.0: Yes

Pros

  • Bang for the buck
  • 1000W capacity
  • ATX 3.0

Cons

  • Not Platinum Efficiency

Coupled with the 1000W wattage, the MSI A1000G PCIE5 also boasts an efficiency rating of 80 PLUS Gold certification. Therefore, the MSI A1000G offers high capacity with great efficiency at the same time. Furthermore, it is also ATX 3.0 compatible, solidifying its position as a future-proof PSU. While these three features alone give the MSI A1000G a phenomenal value, this is not it. The power supply also uses the infamous Japanese 105°C Capacitors to offer unparalleled reliability and durability. Speaking of durability, the 10-year warranty also goes a long way because you are going to use a whopping 1000W PSU for many years.

To ensure optimal temperatures, the A1000G uses a 135mm Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan to keep the power supply from overheating. The fan also comes with a Zero RPM Mode, which means that the fan will only begin spinning when the TDP is above 40%. While the Zero RPM Mode is a good feature that offers low noise and energy saving, you can disable it by pressing the button on the back.

Buy It If

✅You want great value: The best thing about the MSI A1000G is how much value it offers for the price. The power supply is filled to the brim with extensive features and high wattage capacity.

Don't Buy It If

❌You want even more efficiency: While the 80 PLUS Gold efficiency is good, it would have been even better to see the Platinum rating.

What Makes It The Best Value PSU for RX 7900 XTX?

For the money, the MSI A1000G comes with a 1000W capacity, an 80+ GOLD certification, Japanese capacitors, ATX 3.0 compatibility, and a 10-year warranty. These features make the MSI A1000G the Best Value PSU for RX 7900 XTX.

PSU Key Terms

Following are the key PSU terms that you should always keep in mind whenever you’re looking for a power supply:

  • Wattage: PSU wattage represents the maximum power output capacity, measured in watts (W). It determines the power delivery to your components, so it’s crucial to match it with your system’s requirements.
  • Efficiency: PSU efficiency measures how effectively it converts AC power to DC power. Opting for higher efficiency ratings like 80 Plus Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Titanium can reduce energy wastage and lower electricity bills.
  • Form Factor: PSU form factor refers to its physical size and mounting compatibility. It’s important to choose a PSU that matches the supported form factor of your computer case to ensure a proper fit.
  • Modularity: PSUs come in modular or non-modular variations. Modular PSUs feature detachable cables, offering flexibility and improved cable management. On the other hand, non-modular PSUs have fixed cables, which can be more cost-effective but may lead to cable clutter. There are also semi-modular PSUs; they have the important connectors fixed to the PSU, while the less important cables can be detached.
  • Protection Features: PSU protection features include safeguards against overloading, overvoltage, and short circuits to prevent potential damage to your components. It’s essential to select a PSU that comes with these protective measures for added safety.
  • Fan Type and Noise Level: PSU fan type refers to the cooling mechanism used, while noise level indicates the operating sound. Considering both factors ensures efficient cooling and a quieter system overall.

Do You Need A New PSU For RX 7900 XTX?

The answer to this question is fairly simple. The minimum recommended PSU for the RX 7900 XTX is 800W. Therefore, if your old PSU has a lower wattage, then you should consider upgrading your PSU to prevent potential damage to your RX 7900 XTX.

While you can get away with a 700W or 750W PSU for an RX 7900 XTX, I would not recommend going down this route as it possesses risks. When I tested the RX 7900 XTX, its maximum power draw during gaming was somewhere between 350W to 360W. But its 20ms power spikes were crossing 450W. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you go for at least an 850W PSU with plenty of protective features to comfortably run your RX 7900 XTX.

How We Picked The Best PSU For RX 7900 XTX

To bring together the best PSU for RX 7900 XTX, I tested a bunch of top-tier power supplies and evaluated them over a series of factors. Whenever you’re in the market for power supplies, it is highly recommended that you always consider these factors as they will help you make the right choice.

  • Performance: Of course, the first thing we test in all our power supplies is their performance. As such, we used special tools to test the voltage ripple, regulation, and efficiency of every PSU across different rails. This gave us a clear picture of which PSU is more stable and good to go for the 7900 XTX
  • Reliability & Durability: We also took apart every PSU to get a look inside its components. A power supply is only as good as its capacitors and other internals, and that’s what matters the most. Furthermore, its fan’s quality and bearing should also be high-end because the fan can break down earlier than the actual PSU.
  • Modularity: If a PSU is fully modular, all of its cables can be detached. This way, you only need to use and plug in the cables, and the extra connectors can live in the box. A fully modular PSU not only eases up the cable management, which ultimately makes your build look cleaner, but it also improves the airflow because there aren’t a bunch of messy cables hanging out in your rig.
  • ATX 3.0 Compatibility: While the RX 7900 XTX is not ATX 3.0 compatible, it is always good to have an ATX 3.0 compatible PSU for future-proofing. The next generation of AMD graphics cards, just like the current gen NVIDIA GPUs, will likely use the PCIe 5 cable. Therefore, the next time you upgrade your GPU, there is a high chance you will need an ATX 3.0 compatible PSU. Therefore, I included a few ATX 3.0 power supplies in my list as well.
