Astro Bot Dominates Game Awards 2024 with 92 Wins

Story Highlight
  • Astro Bot has managed to win a whopping 92 game awards for 2024.
  • The title also won the GOTY award at TGA beating Black Myth: Wukong.
  • Astro Bot proves that creativity is the key to a successful title.

Astro Bot was unarguably one of the best games released this year. It not only won the Game of The Year Award for the TGA 2024 but has also managed to dominate the category for most outlets winning 92 awards in total so far.

Why it matters: Astro Bot was nothing but downright fun, featuring over-the-top platform gameplay which has led to it becoming the most-awarded game of 2024.

Astro Bot
Astro Bot won the GOTY award at The Game Awards 2024 against all odds

As things currently stand, Astro Bot has won 92 major game awards. If things continue along the same line, it might even surpass 100 awards making it one of the most awarded platformers of all time. The current rankings are:

  1. Astro Bot – 92 Awards
  2. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – 33 Awards
  3. Balatro – 25 Awards
  4. Metaphor: ReFantazio – 24 Awards
  5. Black Myth: Wukong – 20 Awards
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth places 2nd as the most-awarded game of the year

Despite an overall lackluster 2024 in terms of software, both the top 2 games were PlayStation titles. However, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will soon be available on PC as well as Square Enix pushes towards its multiplatform strategy.

Nonetheless, what Astro Bot has accomplished is highly commendable. Apart from all these awards it also scored 94 on Metacritic and became the highest-rated Opencritic PlayStation game of all time.

While it might not be too staggering sales numbers, it also was the second-highest-selling platformer in the UK for this decade. Astro Bot is also a great embodiment of how games can flourish if creativity is still alive

Elden Ring Nightreign Doesn’t Have The Legendary Miyazaki At Its Helm

Story Highlight
  • Elden Ring Nighreign was a surprise reveal during TGA 2024.
  • Since then, a lot of information regarding the title has been revealed, including that Miyazaki isn’t at its helm.
  • Instead, he assigned the game to Jnuya Ishizaki, who has plenty of experience in this genre.

FromSoftware surprised its fandom by revealing Elden Ring Nighreign during The Game Award 2024. No one expected the developer to announce a spin-off to the much-loved Souls title after receiving a massive expansion.

However, the developer had different plans and wanted to spoil its fandom. While the fandom is hyped, there have been concerns regarding the game being a live service, but it has already been confirmed that it will be a one-time purchase, so fans shouldn’t worry about such things.

Another concern has now surfaced, as Miyazaki isn’t directly involved in the title

Why it matters: The Souls fandom trusts Hidetaka Miyazaki a lot, as this man always delivers. So, this legendary figure not being at the helm is causing some concerns.

Elden Ring Nightreign New Featured
The Upcoming Elden Ring Spin-Off Doesn’t Have Miyazaki Or George R.R. Martin At Its Centre

IGN Japan recently interviewed Junya Ishizaki about the upcoming Elden Ring spin-off. During the interview, Ishizaki was asked about Miyazaki’s involvement in the game. He revealed that Miyazaki was only involved until the conception point

Miyazaki was involved up until the creation of the initial concept for ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. Since then, he has left it all to me.

-Junya Ishizaki

Ishizaki further revealed that he is leading the development of the game as the director. Some fans have expressed concerns, but there is no need to worry, as he is no stranger to developing a Souls game

Ishizaki has worked extensively on FromSoftware games, so he knows what he is doing; after all, Miyazaki left him in charge. It should also be noted that George R.R. Maritn wasn’t involved in the writing, either, so don’t expect to see some messed-up scenarios like in the base game.

The interview further reveals that there are no plans to include battle royale or PvEvP modes. Also, there will be a playable character with a primary mechanic of using Spirit Ashes.

All in all, Junya Ishizaki being the game’s centre isn’t a concern as he is highly experienced in this genre.

What do you think about Miyazaki not being directly involved in Elden Ring Nighreign? Are you excited about the title? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers forums.

Half-Life 3 Announcement In 2025 Backed By Yet Another Insider

Story Highlight
  • Many recent reports are hinting toward a Half-Life 3 announcement soon enough.
  • Another insider has backed those reports by claiming that the game will be announced this year.
  • Valve has ignored the game for over 2 decades, so fans are skeptical about believing the rumors unless they are confirmed officially.

Half-Life 3 has recently become a hot topic due to many rumors about its development. There are many reports that have almost confirmed its existence, but fans are still keeping their expectations in check until Valve says something.

That is understandable, given the gaming giant hasn’t said anything about a sequel for over two decades. Recently, a report revealed that Valve has already begun early closed playtesting of Half-Life 3.

Shortly after that, the voice actor of G-Man teases more news regarding the franchise in 2025. Now, a reliable insider has also claimed that we will witness the announcement of Half-Life 3 in 2025

Why it matters: Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, and just recently, on its 20th anniversary, Valve released a massive update that broke its all-time previous high on Steam. So, this year would be the perfect opportunity to announce a sequel.

Half Life 3
Half-Life 2 Was Released Over 2 Decades Ago, And Yet Its Fandom Is Still Awaiting A Sequel

Jason Schreier, one of the most reliable industry insiders, has recently given his list of predictions that he thinks will happen in 2025.

The insider thinks GTA 6 will be delayed, the industry will rebound driven by PC Gaming primarily, Ubisoft will undergo significant transformation, Hollow Knight: Silksong will release this year, AI will have its Icarus moment, Xbox will go full multiplatform with Sony following its footsteps, and Half-Life 3 announcement will be made this year.

Fans are quite skeptical about his predictions but some of them are backed by some facts. While there can’t be much said about the rest of the predictions, the Half-Life 3 one sounds pretty reasonable, given how many reports have already hinted at its announcement in 2025.

Valve Seems To Be Secretly Working On The Long Awaited Half-Life 3

Still, we would recommend the fans take this news with a pinch of salt as these are mere predictions from a renowned insider. It is very likely that Valve has something in store for the fandom in 2025, which could be related to the Half-Life franchise.

AAA Games Will Lose Attention If There’s No Innovation, Says Bioshock Creator

Story Highlight
  • Bioshock creator says lack of innovation in AAA games causes loss of interest.
  • Most studios prefer to launch games in major franchises because they are less risky.
  • He is currently set to launch Judas, which takes a lot of inspiration from Bioshock.

The legendary creator behind the Bioshock games, Ken Levine is set to launch his much-anticipated game, Judas this year. Ahead of the launch, he has stated that AAA will slowly start to lose attention if there’s no innovation going forward.

In recent years, we’ve seen studios playing it very safe with AAA games. This is primarily because the budgets have gone sky high, which leads to massive losses if the game fails.

Why it matters: Because they mostly play it safe, AAA games have kind of become boring. The lack of innovation is so prominent, that many gamers have turned towards Indie games.

Judas Ken Levine
Judas is the next game of the Bioshock creator

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Levine talked about his experience ever since Take-Two shut down Irrational Games in 2017, the studio behind the Bioshock games. Ghost Story Games is the studio behind Judas, which is very reminiscent of Bioshock.

He further talked about the hurdles in game development, stating that the process was very simple back in the day, but now it’s very complex as they have to deal with maps, shaders, higher polygon counts, and much more.

Bioshock
Levine says developing a game other than Bioshock was risky

The problem with AAA is if you don’t innovate, especially in games, you start losing people because they’ve seen it before.

– Ken Levine

He highlighted that the problem with AAA games is that if you don’t innovate, the attention dies out. Players start to lose their focus quickly which leads to many studios sticking to major franchises to stay on the safe side.

Levine said that the Marvel Universe is a great example of people losing interest in something when innovation is lost. With Judas, he is moving away from the successful Bioshock franchise, which is a risk, but he hopes it pays off

PS5 Pro Will Target 4K/60 FPS On Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 With PSSR

Story Highlight
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is due to be released in a month, and its console specs are now out.
  • The game will offer 30 FPS at upscaled 4K resolution on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
  • However, PS5 Pro will run at double the frame rates, offering an upscaled 4K / 60 FPS experience.

Kingdom Come Deliverance was released back in 2018 and received a pretty positive reception from the fans. After thoroughly enjoying the game, fans started waiting for a sequel, which will be released in just one month.

The game’s console specs have been officially released, and it seems to paint a pretty picture. To get the best possible console experience with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, fans would have to play it on PS5 Pro. The mid-gen refresh offers a 60 FPS experience at upscaled 4K.

Why it matters: KCD2’s detailed PC requirements are yet to be released, but the console’s specs highlight that the game is highly optimized.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Console Specs
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Official Console Specs Are Now Out

The game will run on each console as follows:

  • Xbox Series S: 1080P / 30 FPS.
  • Xbox Series X Performance: Upscaled 1440P / 60 FPS (unlocked with VRR).
  • Xbox Series X Fidelity: Upscaled 2160P / 30 FPS.
  • PlayStation 5 Performance: Upscaled 1440P / 60 FPS (unlocked with VRR).
  • PlayStation 5 Fidelity: Upscaled 2160P / 30 FPS.
  • PlayStation 5 Pro: Upscaled 2160P / 60 FPS (unlocked with VRR).

While it is a bummer the game isn’t being upscaled on the Xbox Series S to 2K, it will offer pretty good performance on the rest of the consoles. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will offer the same performance and use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as the upscaler.

Meanwhile, PS5 Pro will be able to double the FPS count of its base console, and Series S provides 4K resolution in the pro mode. The mid-gen refresh will offer 4K 60 FPS (unlocked with VRR) in KCD2, which shows the console’s true strength

Fans should notice that the PS5 Pro will use PSSR to run Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at 4 K 60 FPS, so the resolution will be upscaled. Also, with VRR, players will be able to get more FPS than 60.

The PSSR seems to have caused trouble in many games, as it has been causing visual glitches. However, some improvements have already been made by Sony, and hopefully, before KCD2’s launch, the gaming giant will further improve the technology so fans can have the best experience possible.

What do you think about the latest mid-gen refresh offering double the frame rates than the base console in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? Is the PS5 Pro finally showing its true potential? Remedy Wants To Be European Naughty Dog, Says Alan Wake 2 Director

Story Highlight
  • The director behind Alan Wake 2 took inspiration from Naughty Dog’s work on Uncharted.
  • He believes Remedy Entertainment should aim to become the European version of this PlayStation studio.
  • Fans can expect this influence to impact the Max Payne remakes.

Remedy Entertainment has long been a fan-favorite developer in the industry, and the team’s success with Alan Wake 2 in 2023 has seen it reaching new levels of mainstream popularity.

Alan Wake 2 was praised for its gorgeous visuals, mind-bending story-telling, and more. In many ways, it was one of the best horror games released in 2023. During a recent interview, the director explained how Remedy Entertainment created such an exciting game.

Going by his words, the studio took direct inspiration from the team behind Uncharted and aimed to become the European equivalent of Naughty Dog.

Why it matters: Naughty Dog has an incredible lineup of franchises. It is also known as one of the finest teams for creating memorable single-player gaming experiences.

Kyle Rowley recently appeared on the Behind The Voice podcast and discussed his history with the industry.

When asked about his initial experience working with Remedy Entertainment, Kyle Rowley described how he approached Quantum Break’s development. Kyle Rowley stated that he was inspired by Uncharted and aimed to replicate Naughty Dog’s quality in his work.

I think we should be aiming to be like the European version of Naughty Dog.

-Kyle Rowley

He later went on to direct Alan Wake 2, a game that offered the same cinematic flair that has become synonymous with Naughty Dog’s work.

While Naughty Dog needs no introduction, Remedy Entertainment’s praise of the studio is a huge deal. The team is known for creating genre-defining IPs like Max Payne, so this statement highlights just how far PlayStation’s premier studio has come over the last two decades.

While Naughty Dog is famous for multiple IPs, Uncharted and The Last of Us have made the biggest splash. The former is still recognized as a major part of PlayStation’s legacy, while the latter is considered the most awarded franchise in the industry.

Uncharted Set A New Standard For Cinematic Games

Therefore, it seems fitting for Remedy Entertainment to be looking up to one of gaming’s best and most talented teams. Perhaps this inspiration will shine through in the Max Payne remakes, the next major project from the team after Alan Wake 2.

Xbox To Go Full Multiplatform With PlayStation Following Its Footsteps This Year, Says Reliable Insider

Story Highlight
  • Jason Schreier predicts Microsoft and Sony are shifting away from console-exclusive games to release titles on multiple platforms.
  • High game production costs and slow console market growth make exclusives financially unsustainable for many companies.
  • However, Nintendo’s future strategy regarding exclusives is less certain.

Big changes are happening in the gaming world as companies like Microsoft and Sony move away from exclusive games and focus on releasing titles across different platforms. The goal is to reach more players and tackle the growing costs of game development.

Industry insider Jason Schreier predicts that Xbox will fully adopt this multi-platform approach this year, with PlayStation soon to follow. The only possible exception could be Nintendo, as it’s unclear if they will continue with exclusives.

Why it matters: Earlier this week, a reputable analyst predicted that Xbox’s future would look bright thanks to its multiplatform strategy. Jason’s insight indicates that Microsoft will now fully commit to the strategy.

Xbox and PlayStation Multiplatform 2025
Jason Schreier anticipates Xbox will fully embrace this multi-platform strategy this year, with PlayStation likely following suit.

In his article on Bloomberg, Jason Schreier argued that exclusive titles are becoming less relevant due to the rising costs of game development.

Games cost too much to make, the console audience isn’t growing fast enough, and skipping Steam means missing out on a massive chunk of the market. This year, I think we’ll see Xbox go completely multi-platform and PlayStation get closer and closer.

– Jason Schreier

A few key reasons drive the shift to multiplatform availability. Developing high-quality games is getting more expensive, and sticking to just one console limits potential earnings.

By launching games on multiple platforms, companies can reach more players and boost profits. Sony has already started releasing games on PC that were once exclusive to PlayStation.

On the other hand, Xbox seems fully committed to its multiplatform strategy. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be the first Xbox title to be released on PlayStation later this year. Another insider revealed that more Xbox-exclusive titles will be released on rival consoles.

Xbox Series X Vs PlayStation 5
This multiplatform strategy should benefit gamers by giving them access to more games, no matter which platform they use.

Moreover, Jason suggests Nintendo will still focus on exclusive games, but it’s unclear how long this strategy will work. The success of cross-platform games might lead Nintendo to rethink its approach later on.

PlayStation Is Working On At Least A Couple Dormant Classic IPs, Says Insider

Story Highlight
  • Hermen Hulst, the CEO of Sony, recently revealed that the company intends to revive its classic IPs.
  • Now, a reliable insider has claimed that Sony is already working on two small classic IPs.
  • While the insider didn’t reveal what games the gaming giant is working on, fans are expecting them to be Killzone and Resistance.

PlayStation has a plethora of classics that it can revive and generate a massive amount of excitement among its fandom. While the gaming giant has a few interesting releases coming up this year, it can win the fandom’s heart further by reviving some of the classic IPs.

Hermen Hulst previously confirmed that the company intends to return to the old IPs. However, he didn’t really say whether the gaming giant is working on any of the classic games, but an insider has recently revealed some information on the matter.

Andy Robinson of the VGC recently stated that he has heard that PlayStation is working on at least a couple of small, dormant classic IPs.

Why it matters: The gaming and tech giant can surprise its fandom by revitalizing many classic PlayStation IPs, such as Infamous, Sly Cooper, Jak and Dexter, Killzone, and Resistance.

Andy Robinson of VGC (Video Games Chronicles) revealed that he heard Sony is bringing back at least a couple of old IPs.

Without being an insider d***, I know of at least a couple that they’re working on. Like the deep cut, old IP stuff.

-Andy Robinson

The insider is credible, as he has been right about a lot of stuff in the past, so the fandom is hoping again. This rumor also aligns with Hermen Hulst confirming the company’s intent to revive some old IPs

Killzone
Fans Are Expecting Killzone To Be One of The Small Classic IPs PlayStation Seems To Be Reviving

Robinson didn’t reveal what games Sony is working on, but fans expect the gaming giant to revive Killzone and Resistance first. Fans have also long asked the gaming giant to revive the aforementioned IPs.

While Guerrilla Games has already confirmed that it has moved on from the Killzone series, fans are still hopeful.

As of now, there is no way of telling which old IPs are being revived, so fans should take this news with a grain of salt, as Sony has also yet to confirm these recent rumors

Many Game Developers Think The Term “AAA” Is Stupid And Industry Is Broken, Report Reveals

Story Highlight
  • The term “AAA” started in the late 90s.
  • However, it appears many developers still struggle to understand what the term actually means.
  • Many believe it’s stupid and meaningless as it only seeks profit.

While the term triple-A started as titles that are developed with massive budgets, have less risk of failure, and leave a great impact on players, it has become controversial over recent years.

In a recent report from GamesRadar, many developers have claimed that the term triple-A is meaningless and stupid as the developers have only been focusing on their profit and not developing high-quality games for the players.

Why it matters: a recent release from Ubisoft, which released Skull and Bones after a decade-long development and called it a AAAA game but then failed, proves that the term no longer holds any value.

Skull and Bones
Skull and Bones Was A Huge Failure Last Year

Among the many developers who talked about the Triple-A term, one was Charles Cecil, co-founder of Revolution Studios, who stated that he heard about the term when independent studios faced massive difficulties.

He further discussed how big publishers were investing huge amounts of money and looking for great profits. However, he stated that during that era, everything had changed, but not for the better, and that’s why he thinks the term is meaningless.

It’s a stupid term. It’s meaningless. And I think it came from that era, which I don’t have very fond memories of, when everything changed, but not for the better.

-Charles Cecil

Many developers seem to agree with Charles. They believe that there is a line between quality independent games and AAA projects. The latter are titles that are only looking to generate more profits but are not willing to offer anything exciting to fans.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Was Among The Biggest Failures Last Year

Recent releases from studios like Ubisoft and EA have met with great criticism for the same reasons: the publishers are only spending massive money on developing AAA projects and are not listening to fans’ demands.

Therefore, we believe that the term Triple-A has lost its credibility. Over the years, many indie studios have released some of the best titles, like Baldur’s Gate 3, Palworld, Stardew Valley, and more thus having a profound impact on the industry in comparison to AAA projects.

Many developers also believe AAA games could limit creativity. Publishers aren’t willing to take any risks; they seek profit, causing a sharp decline in quality and innovation.

Nonetheless, what do you think about the term? Do you believe Triple-A games have hurt the industry? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or join Tech4Gamer’s Official Forums

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Voted Most Disappointing Game of 2024 In Major Poll

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been picked as the biggest letdown of 2024.
  • Other games, including Star Wars Outlaws and Concord, also received plenty of votes.
  • Fans believe BioWare’s latest work is a major departure from the series’ best entries.

With 2024 officially behind us, fans began to reflect on the state of the gaming industry last year. Between major successes and various disappointments, 2024 was a mixed bag for everyone involved.

EA’s major release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, appeared to fall in the latter camp, with player counts rapidly falling after release and fans voicing their dissatisfaction with the RPG. In the aftermath, the game has been voted 2024’s most disappointing release by a mile.

Why it matters: BioWare has been fighting an uphill battle over the last few years. Unfortunately, it seems the team has been unable to fully redeem itself.

Over on Neogaf, fans recently voted in a major poll, picking their most disappointing games from 2024.

Last year, titles like Concord, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and Star Wars Outlaws ended up being major letdowns for multiple reasons. All three titles failed to impress in terms of both commercial performance and fan reception.

However, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has come out on top, leading the poll with nearly 40% of all votes. Star Wars Outlaws finished in second place with 26.4% of the votes, while Concord followed closely behind with 25% of the votes.

Elaborating on their pick, fans pointed to BioWare’s odd choices for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. They highlighted that the Disney-like dialogue and simplified combat system played a major role in the game’s downfall.

Some fans even said that the latest entry feels like it doesn’t belong in the same franchise. Ultimately, series enthusiasts failed to enjoy BioWare’s latest take on the IP.

Both our competitors seem to be doing well as per our testing, however, the aspect where RTX 2060 shines over the 1660 Super is Ray Tracing and DLSS. The architecture may appear similar in the first place, but the 2060 has dedicated Ray Tracing cores that enable this.

During the entire benchmark, the Geforce RTX 2060 ran slightly hotter than the Geforce GTX 1660 Super, but the difference was not significant. It operated 1.47% hotter than the Geforce GTX 1660 Super. This makes Geforce GTX 1660 Super the most thermal efficient out of the two by a very thin margin.

Neither of these GPUs is a high-end or mid-tier GPU. Now, at the launch price, the Geforce RTX 2060 is approximately 26.51% more expensive than the GTX 1660 Super. However, the performance difference makes it a little hard to justify that price difference.

GeForce RTX 2060 Vs GTX 1660 Super: Which One Would I Recommend?

GTX 1660 Super: It is a slightly easier recommendation out of the two, in my opinion, since it provides a bit more value for the price it’s being sold at. It is roughly 26% cheaper than the RTX 2060, and on average, it performs 18% worse in games. This means, from a cost-to-performance standpoint, the 1660 Super is the better bang for the buck. Not only that, but it also performed slightly better in terms of thermals.

RTX 2060: I’d say, If you can spare a few more bucks, you should definitely consider RTX 2060. You will not only get much better performance but also a much superior architecture. This architecture consists of dedicated Ray Tracing and Tensor cores, which provide you additional perks like DLSS and Ray Tracing, which can make or break the performance difference case for 2060.

I personally believe that the GeForce RTX 2060 and Geforce GTX 1660 Super were two of the most popular budget segment GPUs launched by Nvidia back in their time. They are both entry-level graphic cards in their respective series.

Intel Arc B580 Plagued With Massive Overhead Issues On Older Systems, Reveals Testing

Story Highlight
  • New testing has found that the Intel Arc B580 GPU has huge overhead issues on older systems due to Intel drivers.
  • The GPU’s performance falls apart with certain AAA titles, delivering almost an unplayable experience for players.
  • Intel is already looking into these issues and even recreated some of the same troubling results found by the YouTuber.

Intel has a deep foothold over the CPU market in the gaming scene, but it has only recently started dabbling in discrete GPUs to compete with Nvidia and AMD. Its foray into the arms race has been a mixed bag, but the budget-friendly GPUs have appealed to many users. The Intel Arc B580 GPU is arguably one of the most popular new cheap GPUs in the market, as it can rival some high-end giants

However, new testing has revealed that its high performance is only the case for new systems mounted with the highest specifications, as it falls apart on systems older than three to five years.

Why it matters: The testing reveals that the Intel Arc B580 GPU is only good for new systems but falls apart on older ones due to overhead issues.

As pointed out by the YouTuber Hardware Canucks, the GPU’s performance sees a steep decline in certain games when tested on an older system. Some games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Starfield, were so bad that they were almost unplayable.

So, what’s happening? Mike argues that Intel drivers are to be blamed for the overhead issues. These drivers—while succeeding at gaming and software optimization—completely fail in platform optimization.

All in all, the YouTuber argues that it is not worth buying the GPU right now. Intel is looking into these concerns and even recreated some of these tests.

The only workaround for the overhead problem right now is to check whether your system has Resizable BAR support otherwise users on older platforms like below Intel 10th Gen and Ryzen 3000 series expect cut-down performance in games even by half in some cases.

Intel ARC B850 24GB
Intel is allegedly working on a 24 GB variant of the GPU, but it is nowhere near launch.

It’s unclear how Intel will deal with this, but this issue has been known for a while now and was also present on Alchemist. Hopefully, this issue gets some attention now and Intel can improve upon it. But users using processors below the Ryzen 3000 series or Intel 10th Gen should avoid ARC B850 for now.
