ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WiFi

Specifications: Chipset: AMD B650 Chipset | Memory: 4 x DIMM, 128GB MAX (DDR5) | Display Outputs: HDMI, Display Port | Rear USB Ports: 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C, 6 x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 4 x USB 2.0 | Network: 1 x Intel 2.5Gb, WiFi 6E | Storage: 3x M.2,  4 x SATA III

Pros

  • Great 14-Phase VRM Setup
  • WiFi 6E

Cons

  • Slightly Expensive For A B650E Board
  • No Native USB 4.0 Support

Aesthetically, the ROG Strix B650E-F shares a lot of similarities with its predecessor, coming with an all-black design with a few silver accents throughout the board. Of course, it would not be a gaming motherboard without RGB; ASUS has added an RGB logo on top of the rear I/O, further enhancing its overall design. ASUS has provided a strong 14-phase VRM setup with the Strix B650E-F Gaming that is robust enough for mild overclocking on the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X. My testing confirms that the VRM setup is capable of some beneficial overclocking results, and the cooling element keeps the VRM components cool even during load.

It comes with a single Gen 5.0 x 16, along with a standard Gen 4 slot. In addition to that, it features two Gen 5 M.2 slots and a single PCIe 4.0 m.2 slot. To further cater to your storage needs, ASUS has included a total of six SATA ports as well. The ROG Strix B650-F also comes with an HDMI port along with a single Display port.

Editor`s Note

Although the 14-phase VRM of the Strix B650E-F is not as strong as some of the competing X670E motherboards, it is still competent enough for overclocking the Ryzen 7 7700X. That makes it an excellent value option in the upper mid-range of the AM5 motherboards.

Pros

  • Stunning white design
  • PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot
  • Great Value
  • Lower price than the competition

Cons

  • No PCIe Gen 5.0

The Strix B650-A Gaming immediately stands out from the crowd thanks to its exceptional all-white design. This motherboard design fits in perfectly well with an all-white build, but it also complements other components really well. The RGB lighting is subtle but well-diffused. In a similar fashion to the rest of the ROG Strix lineup of motherboards, we see a 14-phase VRM with the ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WiFi in a 12+2 configuration. While this 14-phase VRM setup provides a solid overclocking experience according to my test results, especially for a board targeted toward people on a budget.

The B650-A Gaming WiFi comes with a total of three M.2 slots; however, it only features a single PCIe Gen 5 M.2 slot, with the other two slots operating at the standard PCIe Gen 4 speeds. ASUS has equipped the ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WiFi with a wide selection of USB ports, including a total of six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports.

Buy It If:

✅You want a reasonably-priced motherboard: The ASUS ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WiFi offers a more accessible price point compared to high-end motherboards in the market, making it suitable for average consumers.

✅You require a PCIe Gen 5 M.2 slot: Although lacking a PCIe Gen 5 expansion slot, it compensates with a PCIe Gen 5 M.2 slot, enhancing storage capabilities.

Don’t Buy It If:

❌You want a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot: As an entry-level B650 chipset motherboard, it lacks PCIe Gen 5 support in its expansion slots, which could be a deal-breaker for users specifically seeking this feature.

What Makes It The Best White Motherboard For Ryzen 7 7700X?

The ASUS ROG Strix B650-A is a great pick for anyone interested in pairing it with a white-themed build. Its great price, in combination with the stunning white design, makes it worthy of taking the spot as the best white motherboard for Ryzen 7 7700X on our list.

Pros

  • Provides great value
  • 16+2+1 VRM Setup
  • 4 M.2 Slots

Cons

  • No PCIe Gen 5.0 Expansion Slot
  • Slightly Expensive For B650

MSI has cut no corners with the design of the MPG B650 Carbon WiFi. The chipset heatsink sports a rather unique design, while an MSI logo can be found on top of the rear I/O, which comes with A-RGB lighting. Of course, the lighting is fully customizable using MSI’s Mystic Light software. To better make use of the additional performance these new processors come with, MSI has equipped the MPG B650 Carbon WiFi with a powerful VRM setup consisting of 19 phases in total, which are arranged in a 16+2+1 configuration. To cool the VRMs down, MSI has used massive heatsinks that can be seen on top of the board.

MSI has included a ton of note-worthy features with the MPG B650 Carbon WiFi, including 4 M.2 slots in total. However, it is worth mentioning that only one of the M.2 slots operates at PCIe Gen 5 speeds. Additionally, it offers a lot of rear I/O connectivity options, coming in with 7 USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports in total.

WARNING: The B650 Chipset does not have any PCIe 5.0 expansion slots, so if you want that functionality, it is better to go with an X670E motherboard.

Buy It If:

✅You need a robust VRM setup: The MPG B650 Carbon WiFi is equipped with a robust 16+2+1 VRM setup, specifically a 19-phase configuration, which is rare to find on a B650 motherboard.

✅You require diverse USB ports: The motherboard stands out with its diverse selection of USB ports, including an adequate number of USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port with transmission speeds up to 20 Gbps.

Don’t Buy It If:

❌You require PCIe Gen 5.0 expansion slots: The main drawback is the absence of PCIe Gen 5.0 expansion slots. While this may not be crucial for some users, those specifically seeking PCIe Gen 5 capabilities might find this limitation disappointing.

Pros

  • 2 Gen 5 M.2 slots
  • Perfect for S.F.F Builds
  • Two USB 4.0 Ports

Cons

  • Only Two SATA ports

For people interested in small form factor builds, ASUS has introduced their Mini-ITX ROG Strix X670E-I Gaming WiFi that promises to bring all of the premium features that the X670E chipset offers in a much smaller Mini-ITX form factor. ASUS has achieved this small design by increasing the height of the VRM and M.2 heatsinks. We also get a 10+2 VRM design with the X670E-I Gaming WiFi which is a huge improvement over the 8+2 configuration seen on older generation X570E-I board. My testing shows that the 10+2 phase VRM provides respectable overclocking performance when paired with the Ryzen 7 7700X.

There are two M.2 slots stacked up on one another, however, only one of the M.2 slots runs at PCIe Gen 5.0 speeds. ASUS has also included their ROG FPS-II card that provides extra SATA ports as well as more headers. Also included is the ROG Strix HIVE, which is a magnetic extension to the board that offers a lot of functionality.

PRO TIP: Always cross-check the compatibility of your case with the board before buying a mini-ITX motherboard.

Buy It If:

✅You require USB 4.0 ports: The ASUS ROG Strix X670E-I Gaming stands out with its dual USB 4.0 ports, delivering impressive transmission speeds of up to 40 Gbps.

✅You need a feature-rich compact motherboard: Despite its compact size, this mini-ITX motherboard is packed with features. ASUS has even added an extension to increase the number of ports and connectors available.

Don’t Buy It If:

❌Your budget is limited: Like many new motherboards, the ASUS ROG Strix X670E-I Gaming comes with a relatively high price. While it’s one of the more affordable X670E boards, the overall cost remains a notable consideration.

What Makes It The Best Mini-ITX Motherboard For Ryzen 7 7700X?

If you are in the market for a small form factor mini ITX motherboard that offers all of the high-end features you would expect coming from an X670 class board, then the ASUS ROG Strix X670E-I is just the motherboard for you. It offers a decent VRM setup along with great cooling while also making great use of the small space, making it the best mini-ITX motherboard for Ryzen 7 7700X.

Pros

  • Incredible 24+2+1 Phase VRM Design
  • Built for extreme overclocking
  • 2 PCIe 5.0 x 16 slots

Cons

  • Extremely expensive

The design has maintained some of the classic features such as the cog present on the bottom right side of the board. Moreover, the chipset heatsink is completely covered in a shiny black coating with an RGB logo on top of it. Speaking of RGB, a subtle strip can be found on the bottom right side of the board. The ASRock X670E Taichi puts even some of the highest X570 offerings to shame with its monstrous 26 Phase VRM setup which assigns 24 phases to the CPU voltage and two phases to the SoC power. It uses 105A power stages, allowing users to seamlessly overclock even the highest-end processors available per my testing.

Taking full advantage of the X670E chipset, ASRock has added two full-sized PCIe Gen 5 x 16 expansion slots with the ASRock X670E Taichi. In addition to that, you also get four M.2 slots with this powerhouse of a motherboard. A total of eight M.2 slots are also present for all of your regular SSDs and hard drives.

PRO TIP: Make sure you have a powerful aftermarket cooling solution before trying to overclock the Ryzen 7 7700X.

How We Picked & Tested The Best Motherboards For Ryzen 7 7700X

Here are a few things you need to consider before purchasing a motherboard for the Ryzen 7 7700X.

  • VRM: VRM, also known as the Voltage Regulator Module, is a crucial part of any electrical component, that is responsible for handling the voltage that flows across components. Going for a cheaper VRM setup not only puts your processor at risk of failing at any given moment but also drastically decreases its overclocking potential.
  • Overclocking potential: As mentioned previously, a processor’s overclocking potential depends a lot on the VRM configuration of your motherboard. Since overclocking pushes the CPU voltage above the recommended limit, it is important to have a VRM configuration that can handle the additional power.
  • Cooling: Of course, a great host of features and a robust VRM setup will not mean anything if they are not accompanied by an adequate amount of cooling. Especially with these newer processors now running hotter than ever, it is important to ensure that your motherboard comes with a sufficient amount of cooling for the VRMs and your M.2 SSDs.
  • Price: Going for a cheaper B650-based motherboard will get you considerably fewer features compared to the higher-end X670E chipset; however, all of that boils down to what your requirements are for a motherboard. If your workload does not require you to opt for the highest-end motherboard, then the B650 chipset should serve you just fine.
