1. Processing Nodes & Architecture: The Ampere-based RTX 3080 comes with an 8nm process node while the latest RTX 4070 Super uses a 5nm node and is based on the Ada Lovelace architecture.
2. Clock Speeds: While the RTX 3080 has a base and boost clock speeds of 1440 MHz and 1710 MHz, the RTX 4070 Super arrives with a higher base and boost clock of 1980 MHz and 2475 MHz, respectively.
3. VRAM: Both GPUs have only a 2GB difference in VRAM. The RTX 3080 has a 10GB GDDR6X VRAM while the newer RTX 4070 Super consists of a 12GB GDDR6X memory.
4. Bus Width: Despite being an older card, the RTX 3080 possesses a much higher bus width of 320 bits whereas, the RTX 4070 Super comes with only 192-bit bus width.

Framerates are crucial in determining the performance of GPUs that’s why we set these two cards up at 1080p to judge their gaming capabilities. The testing rig is kept constant to avoid any unnecessary variations.

Cyberpunk 2077

• Let’s begin with Cyberpunk 2077 with ultra Ray Tracing enabled. Here, we saw that the RTX 4070 Super surpassed 111 FPS while the RTX 3080 performed with 91 FPS, showcasing a 19.8% margin.
• In terms of the 1% lows, the RTX 3080 performed with a decent 73 FPS whereas the RTX 4070 Super overpassed it with 89 FPS.

Starfield

• In Starfield, the values dropped below the 100 FPS mark, where the RTX 4070 Super gained an average of 92 FPS and the RTX 3080 lagged with 77 FPS, making for a 17.7% gap.
• The 1% lows were extremely low on the RTX 3080 which managed to average only 50 FPS while the RTX 4070 Super steered well over the 60 FPS mark, averaging 70 FPS.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora

• Up next, we noticed that the RTX 4070 Super outshined the RTX 3080 with a 36.1% margin as it obtained 98 FPS over the RTX 3080’s 68 FPS.
• As for the 1% lows, the RTX 3080 performed with an average of 40 FPS while the RTX 4070 Super achieved an average of 56 FPS.

Star Wars Jedi Survivors

• In the latest Star Wars game, the RTX 4070 Super took the spotlight as it won with a 17.5% gap, acquiring an average of 93 FPS while the RTX 3080 was behind with 78 FPS.
• Here, we saw a different story as the RTX 3080 took the lead by achieving an average of 48 FPS. In contrast, the RTX 4070 Super was the one that followed, this time, with 40 FPS.

The Last Of Us Part 1

• Yet again, the RTX 4070 Super emerged as the victor by obtaining a higher average of 112 FPS over the RTX 3080, which acquired an average of 93 FPS – 18.5% behind.
• The RTX 3080 easily walked past the 60 FPS mark, gaining an average of 70 FPS in this game. Whereas, the RTX 4070 Super outdid its rival by gaining an average of 87 FPS. 

Resident Evil 4 Remake

• We observed that even with Ray Tracing enabled, both the RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 3080 performed extremely well in this game, averaging 181 FPS and 167 FPS, respectively, and showing an 8% gap. 
• The 1% lows were also above the 100 FPS point, with the RTX 4070 Super being relatively higher with 120 FPS while the RTX 3080 performed well with 108 FPS on average.

Hogwarts Legacy

• With Ray Tracing disabled in the wizard’s world, the RTX 3080 obtained an average of 107 FPS whereas the RTX 4070 Super outperformed it with 114 FPS, being 6.3% better in this game.
• We observed that the 1% lows were similar as both the RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 3080 achieved an average of 61 FPS and 57 FPS, respectively.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

• In this multiplayer shooter, the RTX 4070 Super outshined its rival by a mile, by a staggering 26.5% to be precise, as it averaged 162 FPS over the RTX 3080’s 124 FPS.
• As for its 1% lows, the RTX 3080 outperformed its competitor in this realm as it acquired an average of 78 FPS. On the other hand, the RTX 4070 Super was behind the race with 47 FPS.

Forza Horizon 5

• Here as well, the RTX 4070 Super defeated the RTX 3080 with a high margin of 24.7% as it achieved an average of 159 FPS over the RTX 3080, which obtained an average of 124 FPS.
• The RTX 4070 Super was also ahead in terms of the 1% lows, exhibiting an average of 128 FPS over the RTX 3080, which was miles behind with its lower 83 FPS.

Red Dead Redemption 2

• In this infamous cow-boy game, the RTX 4070 Super performed 17.3% better, averaging 144 FPS. On the contrary, the RTX 3080 also did well and obtained an average of 121 FPS.
• The RTX 4070 Super also scored in the area of 1% lows, achieving an average of 109 FPS over the RTX 3080, which acquired an average of 81 FPS simultaneously.

RTX 3080 Vs RTX 4070 Super: Overall Gaming Performance

In terms of the average framerates, we have a clear winner. As you’ve seen the RTX 4070 Super performed better than its rival in every game by achieving 18.6% better framerates than the RTX 3080. On the flip side, the RTX 4070 Super outperformed it in the area of 1% lows as it performed 15.9% better than the RTX 3080 at 1080p.

Despite the performance difference, the RTX 3080 is not to be taken lightly. Its higher CUDA cores, RT Cores, TMUs, and memory bandwidth all indicate that it is more suited for productivity tasks.

Thermal Statistics

After calculating the temperatures across the ten games, we saw a clear difference. Here, we noticed that the RTX 3080 operated at 73.8°C whereas the latest RTX 4070 Super performed at 61.3°C on average. Therefore, the RTX 4070 Super becomes 18.5% more thermally efficient than the RTX 3080. 

Power Consumption

In terms of the average power consumption, we observed that the difference was night and day between the RTX 4070 Super vs RTX 3080. Where the RTX 3080 consumed a staggering 306.2 watts of power on average, the RTX 4070 Super drew only 196.8 watts of power, becoming 43.5% more power-efficient than the RTX 3080. 

Price And Value

The RTX 4070 Super’s price has been the same for its base variants. However, for its high-end models, there has been a 13.9% rise in price. We saw the RTX 3080’s price has been increased by a 27% margin for its base models and by 46.1% for its high-end variants. Currently, the RTX 4070 Super is around 45% cheaper than the RTX 3080.

Conclusion – Which One Would We Recommend?

RTX 4070 Super: The RTX 4070 Super collects all its attributes and this is why we recommend it to you. It performed better than the RTX 3080 while remaining power-efficient and thermally efficient. Moreover, it is priced way below the RTX 3080, making it the perfect card to hand your hands around. 

RTX 3080: The RTX 3080 in itself is an excellent card but it failed to check any of the boxes we always look for when we compare it with the latest RTX 4070 Super. Since it failed to meet the criteria of power, temperature, performance, and price, we don’t recommend you get the RTX 3080 over the RTX 4070 Super.
