MacBook Pro: 2016-18 – I Avoid Them, You Should Too

Story Highlight
  • Butterfly keyboards are prone to failure and not at all future-proof.
  • Touch Bars were very laggy, served no actual purpose, and replaced the very vital physical Function row.
  • No useful ports, no MagSafe, shorter battery life, and thermally throttled performance meant that these MacBook Pros also suffered from poor resale value.

God, oh God. Where should I start?

Let’s begin with how everyone sees Apple’s MacBook Pros as the epitome of style, sleekness, professionalism integrated within a seriously powerful package.

Apple’s entire range of Macs has seen a tremendous boost in popularity ever since the introduction of Apple Silicon, which has propelled the MacBook Pro to a league of its own.

However, the MacBook Pro didn’t always enjoy such exclusive support.

2016-2018 MacBook Pros: All About The Form Factor

A certain portion of the blame can be attributed to Jony Ive, the Chief Design Officer of Apple

Ive was wildly celebrated for some of the most beloved designs ever, including the original iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

However, Ive was also known for prioritizing the form factor of his designs over their functionality, which one might argue was their primary point of existence.

The same happened with the 2016 MacBook Pro. Let me explain.

Butterfly Keyboard

Thanks to the 2016 MBP’s smaller dimensions, Apple invented a Butterfly mechanism instead of sticking with the traditional scissor-style mechanism, which the Cupertino-based company claimed would be much quieter and ‘stable’.

Nevertheless, these Butterfly keyboards were prone to failure, and even a speck of dirt could cause the fragile mechanism to malfunction, thanks to Jony Ive’s design, this meant that the whole machine would have to be disassembled in order to repair or replace the faulty Butterfly keyboards.

Butterfly Keyboard (Image By Tech4Gamers)

As such, the Butterfly keyboard never managed to succeed, until Apple phased it out in favor of the good old scissor-style Magic Keyboard for the 2019 16” MacBook Pro.

Form Factor, Battery Life, and I/O Connectivity

As compared to the outgoing 2015 15” MacBook Pro, the 2016 15” MacBook Pro is 2% shorter, 3% narrower, 10% lighter, and 14% thinner, and a 24% smaller battery.

This meant that the 2016 MacBook Pro would definitely have worse battery life and inherently struggle with sustained performance because of thermal throttling issues.

Also, due to the smaller dimensions, Apple chose to forgo every single port and opt for just two USB Type-C connectors in the 13” variant and four Type-C ports in the 15” variant.

To make matters worse, even MagSafe didn’t make the cut. Welcome to the dongle life.

Touch Bar

Ah, yes. The Touch Bar. That thin OLED strip which was responsible for the elimination of the Function row was fantasized about, at first, but later on, it established itself as nothing more than a gimmick.

Often laggy and prone to hanging meant that it made using the 2016, 2017, and 2018 MacBook Pros a real headache.

Even worse, the Touch Bar had Apple’s Touch ID integrated into it, which meant it was responsible for unlocking your MacBook Pro. As such, if it ever froze at such a time, good luck with unlocking your Mac.

Macbook Touch bar
Touch Bar

Annoyingly, it replaced the physical Function row, which is crucial for professional coders and developers, i.e., the target audience for which the MacBook Pro is manufactured.

Thermal Throttling

As hinted above, the 2016, 2017, and 2018 MacBook Pro’s tighter packaging meant there was less room for heat dissipation, which essentially meant your MBP’s fans would routinely hit full speed, making an annoying whine in the process.

Nevertheless, what was truly more annoying was that despite the fans running at full speed, these MacBook Pros would still undergo thermal throttling of the worst kind, performing far below their advertised clock speed.

2016-2018 MacBook Pros: How Did Apple React?

Aside from trying to better the Butterfly keyboards I mentioned above, Apple also introduced a replacement support program for users who suffered from defective Butterfly keyboards (for a period of 4 years from the date of purchase).

Apple also tried to fix the thermal throttling issues with a software update, however, to this day, people still recommend you buy the Core i7 variant of the 2018 MacBook Pro over the Core i9 since it might actually perform better thanks to lower heat output, which is just plain embarrassing for Apple.

Exorbitant pricing schemes, no real ‘pro’ ports, poor battery life, the elimination of MagSafe, a mushy keyboard that felt cheap underneath your fingers, I can go on and on, but this parody ad really sums my opinion up.

2016-2018 MacBook Pros: Skip Them

This is a no-brainer for anyone, honestly.

Just stay away from the 13” and 15” variants of the 2016, 2017, 2018, and even 2019 MacBook Pros, no matter how cheap you might be finding them.

My advice? If you’re on a tight budget and really want a MacBook Pro, go for the 15” versions of the 2013-2015 MBPs, you can’t go wrong with those. Their decent power is insanely reliable, and they are very affordable.

If you’ve got some cash on hand and want the best Intel MacBook Pro ever, spring for the 2019 16″ MacBook Pro with your eyes closed.

Chapter closed.

Game Science Reportedly Preparing 2 Black Myth: Wukong DLCs

Story Highlights
  • Black Myth: Wukong was reportedly supposed to be lengthier but kept short because of budget restraints.
  • Game Science plans to launch 2 DLCs for the title, especially now after all the success.
  • A sequel will also come after the DLCs.

Black Myth: Wukong is a fairly decent-sized game. You are looking at just over 30 hours to complete the main story spanning six chapters and over 60 hours for completionists. However, a report states that the action RPG could’ve been lengthier if not for budget restraints.

Why it matters: The report states that the title was originally planned to have 13 chapters, but it was cut short to just 6 to maintain budgets. Because of this, Game Science will supposedly release multiple DLCs in the future.

Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong has a lot of potential for future expansion.

According to a new report, Game Science plans to release 2 DLCs for Black Myth: Wukong before its next game. The ending left the door open for a new story that will undoubtedly be explored with the DLCs instead of a sequel.

The game isn’t comparable to similar titles like Elden Ring in terms of length, but that’s because of the budget. The 13 chapters were reduced to 6, which still translated into a fairly long game.

But with the DLCs, Game Science has a lot to offer. For one, budget will surely not be an issue since the game outsold everyone’s expectations. It sold over 10 million units in just three days, and the number must be much bigger now, so the developers have a lot to work with.

The leaker also states that a sequel will be made after the DLC.

Black Myth: Wukong
The game was supposedly meant to be longer.

There isn’t much we would like to see change with the DLCs. The game is already quite good as it is. The developer just needs to replicate the current formula with the expansions.

However, the action RPG could use some work with optimization since it runs quite poorly on consoles.

Anyhow, Game Science’s work on the action RPG is commendable. We can’t wait to see what they bring to the table the DLCs. Unfortunately, there isn’t any official confirmation of the expansions or any information on when we can expect them.

AMD Ryzen 9000 US Prices Slashed By 12% Already

Story Highlight
  • The Ryzen 9000 CPUs are quickly losing their value.
  • The Ryzen 5 9600 costs just $259.99 on eBay, making it nearly 10% cheaper than the MSRP.
  • The Ryzen 9 9900X has been discounted to just $439.99 on Micro Center.

AMD’s new Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 CPUs were launched last month, and we have already seen big price cuts. The prices have dropped around 12%, which makes the Ryzen 9000 cheaper than the outgoing Ryzen 7000 series.

The price drops indicate that the sales have not gone well, and now retailers are eager to get rid of the current stock to make space for the upcoming X3D versions.

Why it matters: These price cuts could help AMD recover from a poor launch. If prices continue to fall at this rate, the company could position its processors as affordable and budget-friendly.

We have seen a noticeable increase in performance and/or efficiency virtually every time AMD has released a new Ryzen generation.

Though higher energy efficiency is a key strength this time around, the Ryzen 9000 has let most people down. According to reports, the CPUs also operate worse on Windows 11 24H2, experiencing latency issues and crashes.

However, even though the Ryzen 9000 series is priced lower than the Ryzen 7000 at launch, some stores have already offered further discounts. The biggest price drop can be found on the Ryzen 9 9900X, which costs $439.99 at Micro Center.

At other stores such as Amazon, Best Buy or Newegg, it has been discounted by 10% and costs $449. The second biggest price drop we can see is for the Ryzen 5 9600X, which costs just $259.99 on eBay, making it 7.1% cheaper than MSRP.

At Micro Center, the Ryzen 7 9700X is currently priced at $349.99, and the Ryzen 9 9950X costs $619.99.

The price reductions are reasonable, but as the release date of the Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs approaches, we should anticipate additional price cuts in September and October. The chips are still not recommended to PC builders until more pricing adjustments are made.

Machine Learning Will Lead To Biggest Leap For PS6 And Xbox, Suggest Analysts

Story Highlight
  • The current console generation has already been out for a while.
  • Tech experts recently talked about the PS6 and the next-gen Xbox, stating they could deliver the biggest generational leap.
  • It has been stated that this leap would primarily rely on machine learning features like those seen in DLSS.

The PS5 and Xbox Series S|X have not been as impressive as they initially seemed. Despite promising 4K 60FPS gaming, these consoles have disappointed more often than not.

However, Microsoft has already confirmed its next-gen hardware, dubbing it the biggest technical leap yet. According to the experts at Digital Foundry, machine learning innovations will be the most important component of this leap.

Why it matters: Machine learning has remained mostly unexplored in the console space, but PC gamers are already well aware of its benefits because of DLSS.

During Digital Foundry’s latest podcast, the tech experts discussed next-gen consoles and what it would take for them to deliver the biggest generational leap.

Digital Foundry discussed that machine learning is already playing a big role in PC gaming due to Nvidia DLSS. Recent reports have also suggested that the PS5 Pro will launch with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, another machine learning-based upscaling solution.

The analysts asserted that this industry has barely explored what machine learning is capable of, as many applications, like material and texture quality improvements and even geometry, are yet to arrive.

Therefore, the experts believe that the console industry could reach the sky if it advances further into this side of machine learning.

PlayStation PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro Announcement Is Yet To Be Made

It has also been stated that with machine learning-powered features, PlayStation 6 and Xbox could finally offer real 4K-like gaming, potentially even reaching 60FPS simultaneously.

It’s clear that both Sony and Microsoft oversold their hardware this generation. Recent examples like Black Myth: Wukong, Final Fantasy 16, and more show how many next-gen games typically run at low resolutions to target 60FPS.

This will improve with the upcoming PS5 Pro, a console that could be revealed as soon as this month. However, the real leap will come once Sony and Microsoft debut brand new hardware for a new generation.

Suicide Squad Failure Resulted In Major Layoffs At Rocksteady

Story Highlight
  • Rocksteady seems to have been hit by multiple layoffs recently.
  • Warner Bros cites Suicide Squad’s poor sales as the reason behind this decision.
  • The QA team is reportedly down to just 15 people, and the layoffs have also impacted other departments.

Suicide Squad, Rocksteady’s first AAA release after the beloved Batman Arkham Knight, has been a colossal disappointment. Leading to millions in losses for Warner Bros, the game failed to measure up to this studio’s past games.

In the aftermath, it seems Rocksteady is now facing layoffs.

Why it matters: These layoffs may be a sign of Warner Bros’ dwindling trust in Rocksteady. As such, the studio could suffer further in the coming months.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Suicide Squad Took Nearly 8 Years To Develop

Not too long, rumors pointed at Warner Bros. completely shutting down Rocksteady. While no such thing seems to be happening, the studio has been hit with various job cuts.

According to reports, nearly 20 members of the QA team have been let go. This team is now down to just 15 members, with various senior and knowledgeable employees being laid off.

Moreover, it seems the layoffs extend to more than just the QA department. While exact details are unclear for now, it appears the job cuts are part of wider restructuring at the studio.

As expected, Warner Bros. has pointed to Suicide Squad’s poor performance as the major reason behind this decision.

Superman
Superman Is Featured As A Villain In The Game

Interestingly, this may be another sign that Warner Bros. is moving on from Suicide Squad. Rocksteady may not support the game for too long, especially since it has been reported that the studio is working on a new project.

Perhaps more layoffs will surface as the situation develops. A few employees have already discussed the layoffs on social media, so more may share their stories as Warner Bros. continues to make fundamental changes to this iconic team.

Black Myth: Wukong Ending Leaves Room For The Perfect Sequel

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong excels in the story-telling department.
  • The true ending shows that the Destined One finally breaks free from the curse Wukong was trapped in.
  • Due to this, he can now challenge the celestials, which leaves a lot of room for a sequel or DLC.

Everybody must be aware of Black Myth: Wukong by now. It is now the biggest single-player release on Steam and still averages over 1.3 million players daily. Like everyone else, I’ve had a great time going through Game Science’s take on Journey to the West.

The game features a great story, but the true ending really doesn’t offer much closure. There are several endings with other bosses; however, the true ending leaves a lot of room for a sequel. Given the game’s success, I believe a sequel is inevitable.

Why it matters: After the first success from Game Science, a new entry in the series is guaranteed to be a standout hit.

Black Myth: Wukong Has A Great Story

Black Myth: Wukong
The Story Is Not Weak At All

Many said before release that this action RPG wouldn’t have a good story, but I don’t think that is the case. I have seen many biased opinions on this matter, making me wonder if people understood the story.

To understand the story, you must first know about the Golden Fillet. This is the headband that appeared on Wukong’s head when he was fighting Erlang. This is actually a reference from the novel Journey to the West.

The Monkey King was tricked into wearing this headband. He was known for being a mischievous monkey who always did whatever he wanted. He never listened to anyone, so they had to resort to such means to keep him in control. In the prologue, when Wukong is in his bird form, you can see the headband appearing on him.

That is when the monk recites a chant, which causes immense pain to the wearer of Golden Fillet, leading to the loss against Erlang. So, the main character is not the same person, but he is the one who is destined to bear the burden of the Monkey King.

The Story Revolves Around The Golden Fillet

Black Myth: Wukong
Sun Wukong Was Defeated Due To The Effect of Golden Fillet

The whole story revolves around just one item, and that’s pretty fascinating. Right at the very end, this item appears again. When Sun Wukong was killed, five of his senses were taken away by Yaoguai Kings. However, his mind, the last sense was completely lost.

In chapter 6, the old monkey reveals that we, the main character, serve as the mind and can bear the name of Wukong. However, for that, there was one last ordeal and that was fighting Wukong himself. You first fight the Stone Monkey.

Later on, the boss evolves, and finally, you fight The Great Sage’s Broken Shell, and oh boy, is that the best fight in the game. This is arguably one of the best bosses I have ever faced since his taunts are on another level. However, upon defeating the broken shell, the Golden Fillet appears again.

The old monkey reappears and places the fillet on the head of the Destined One. However, wasn’t this the object that was the main reason why Wukong died? So, why did they show the fillet as a peaceful gesture? This feels like history is repeating itself.

There is so much confusion about the old monkey that it is very likely that he has joined forces with heaven. Wukong, with all the relics, is a trouble that heaven can’t really handle, so the old monkey seems to be guarding the stone.

Now that all of the relics are sealed in the stone, no one will have to worry about collecting them or reviving the Monkey King.

A Sequel or DLC Seems Imminent

Black Myth sequel and the possibilities of a trilogy
byu/Some-Astronaut-8598 inBlackMythWukong

The default ending doesn’t do justice to the character. However, there is another ending you can trigger. For that, you would have to beat Erlang, a secret boss. After doing so, fight the last boss, and the Destined One won’t let the old monkey place the Golden Fillet on his head.

Instead, just as the old monkey is about to place it, the Destined One opens his eyes and surprises us with a new animation. This leads to a transition into the journey of Wukong, and at last, we can see the events before the prologue.

After the animation ends, the Destined One seems free from this fate. I don’t know why, but this all seems like a plan curated by none other than the Monkey King.

So, now that the Destined One is free of the fillet, he can destroy the celestials, which leaves a lot of room for a sequel. The developer can even release DLC, but exploring heaven will require a lot of content.

Xbox Needs To Go out of Its Way To Help Devs Optimize For Series S

Story Highlight
  • Many developers are unhappy with the Xbox Series S’ limitations, and the difficulties in optimizing for it.
  • Microsoft needs to offer more support and resources to help developers improve gaming performance on the Series S.
  • The company should also be more transparent about its plans for the console.

The Xbox Series S has always been known as a budget-friendly alternative to the Series X, providing access to next-gen gaming without the higher price tag.

However, as the current console generation progresses, the Series S is increasingly becoming a point of contention among developers and gamers alike. It’s becoming clearer that optimizing for this less powerful console is challenging, and Microsoft can no longer overlook this issue.

Why it matters: Microsoft needs to prioritize the needs of its customers and collaborate closely with developers to ensure games run well and look great on the console.

The Series S Dilemma

xbox series s image
The Xbox Series S Launched For $299

The Xbox Series S, with its less powerful hardware, has created big challenges for developers. Its weaker hardware and lower memory compared to the Series X lead to noticeable differences in performance.

Games on the Series S often feel too inferior. Another major issue with the Xbox Series S is its inconsistent frame rates. While it usually handles less demanding games well, newer titles can suffer from frame rate drops and stuttering, making the experience less enjoyable.

This issue is especially noticeable in open-world Unreal Engine 5 titles, where stuttering and frame rate dips can get extremely frustrating. A recent example of this problem is Stalker 2.

Even with Microsoft’s backing, the developers at GSC Game World have had a hard time optimizing the game for the Series S, achieving close to 30FPS. This big difference compared to the Series X version shows the ongoing difficulties with Microsoft’s dual-console approach.

Microsoft Needs To Step In

Xbox Series S|X
It looks like the Series X is Microsoft’s favorite child, while the Series S is left in the corner.

Microsoft’s plan to offer a cheaper next-gen console was meant to make gaming more accessible.

However, the execution of this strategy is increasingly coming under fire. While the Series S was designed to be an affordable option for new gamers, it’s beginning to seem like it’s limiting the overall Xbox experience.

Digital Foundry and other experts have highlighted the drawbacks of developing for the Series S. These include lower-resolution textures and reduced frame rates, making the experience noticeably worse.

Although some believe that the Series S pushes developers to improve their game optimization, this often results in a lower-quality overall experience. A more recent example of that can be seen in Marvel Rivals, where the multiplayer title drops to 540p to maintain 60FPS.

So, what can Microsoft do to fix these problems? The company should get more involved in helping developers directly. Stalker 2’s optimization, despite its difficulties, shows that Microsoft’s hands-on support can be effective.

This kind of support needs to be more common and reliable. Developers shouldn’t have to depend on special help to make their games work on the Series S—they need consistent tools and resources for optimization.

Moreover, Microsoft needs to be clearer about its plans for the Series S. To keep it a useful part of the lineup, the company must explain how it will tackle these ongoing issues.

Developers Are Not Happy With Xbox Series S

The increasing number of developers voicing concerns is telling. For instance, Del Walker, who has worked with major studios like Naughty Dog and Rocksteady, openly criticized the Series S, calling it “annoying to optimize for” and suggesting it shouldn’t exist.

Other developers share this view, seeing the Series S as a barrier that hinders their ability to fully develop their games. One major consequence of these optimization issues is the delay of Xbox releases.

Black Myth: Wukong is a prime example of the optimization issue. The game was delayed on Xbox due to the hardware limitations of the Series S. This delay is disappointing for the fans, and it tarnishes the reputation of the Xbox platform as a whole.

If more developers choose to skip or delay their games on the platform because of the Series S, Microsoft could find itself losing further ground in the console wars. So, you might be asking whether it makes sense to buy Xbox Series S in 2024?

I would say there are much better options in the market if you want a smooth gaming experience.

The Xbox Series S, while admirable in its intent, is becoming a liability for Microsoft. The ongoing optimization issues need Microsoft’s urgent attention, as they could harm the gaming brand further.

Microsoft has the means and knowledge to fix this, but it will need to act quickly and make sure the Series S can perform well alongside the Series X.

Resident Evil Creator Is Completely Against Game Censorship

Story Highlight
  • The Resident Evil creator has spoken out against censorship laws in the industry.
  • He believes that they make no sense since they are made by people who don’t play games.
  • Previously, games like Dead Space were banned in Japan due to censorship rules.

Censorship in games has always been a hot topic. Whether it be violence or explicit content, various parts of the world have changed games to their liking in the past and will likely continue to do so in the future.

However, not everyone agrees with a certain set of rules dictating what developers can and cannot do in their work. In fact, the Resident Evil creator has recently spoken out against censorship in the gaming industry.

Why it matters: Gaming, in general, is a medium with a lot of creativity and freedom. Censorship rules can often be at odds with gaming’s creative nature.

Dead Space Remake
Dead Space Was Originally Banned In Japan

For the unaware, Shinji Mikami is currently working on Shadow of the Damed: Hella Remastered. The director also wants to bring back God Hand but does not seem as enthusiastic about Dino Crisis.

Speaking about Shadow of the Damned: Hella Remastered, he shared his thoughts on game censorship, particularly in Japan. According to the veteran developer, the system itself is flawed for one major reason.

Games end up restricted due to rules made by people who don’t play games.

-Shinji Mikami

He went on to assert that this hinders those who genuinely enjoy the hobby. Suda51, another well-known Japanese developer agreed with this sentiment, stating that the restrictions are not meant for fans of the gaming industry.

While the two developers were focused on censorship laws in Japan during this discussion, they likely hold similar opinions on censorship around the world.

Callisto protocol
The Callisto Protocol Was Also Banned In Japan

As bizarre as some games may be, censorship can take away from their true essence, so it is easy to see why game designers have a problem with such rules.

According to Mikami, these laws can often harm developers, with one such instance being the release of Dead Space in 2008. Many developers at the time were upset that the game was not allowed in Japan because of its depiction of violence and horror.

Avowed Demo Receives More Negative Feedback Than Expected

Story Highlight
  • Avowed has recently been delayed to 2025.
  • Recent impressions of the demo suggest that this RPG is not as great as expected.
  • It seems this limited hands-on demo was bogged down by a fetch quest and repetition, leading to an unsatisfactory experience.

Avowed is among the biggest Xbox exclusives coming in the future. Initially announced with a 2024 release date, it has been delayed to next year to avoid further saturating an already busy Game Pass lineup.

While fans have high expectations from the RPG, not everyone has found Obsidian’s latest work equally enjoyable. Recent impressions from the demo seem to imply that Avowed is disappointing as an RPG from the iconic studios.

Why it matters: The game took three times longer to develop than Fallout New Vegas. Therefore, fans have higher expectations and hope that the delay will allow the studio to make further improvements to its upcoming release.

Avowed FT
Avowed Will Launch Day One On Game Pass

As reported by PCGamesN, who got to play the Avowed demo during Gamescom 2024, the RPG fell short of expectations after two playthroughs.

Talking about his time with the game, the journalist stated that the quest disappointed him the most as it was a dull fetch mission that ended far too quickly and easily. It has also been stated that the demo became way easier as soon as he realized that he could win any fight just with the grenades.

Therefore, the combat experience was far from great. Still, the preview states that Avowed’s open world looked solid in the preview, and performance was fairly consistent.

Avowed
Avowed May Skip 60FPS On Consoles

On the subject of performance, it has been reported that Avowed will target 30FPS on consoles, though Obsidian did hint that this was not the final performance target.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Avowed performs at release. Obsidian is no stranger to criticism, and its latest project has faced it at multiple points already.

However, the team seems to be approaching this criticism with a positive attitude, so all hope is not lost just yet. Avowed will be the first major Xbox release next year, so fans have high hopes for the RPG.

Nintendo Never Compromises On Game Design, Says Dev

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo has been known for making games a lot more fun to play than others.
  • That is mainly because it focuses more on the game design rather than the next-gen graphics.
  • Other developers chasing trends should learn a thing or two from the gaming giant.

Focusing on game design is arguably one of the most important parts of making a game. A game can have the best story or visuals but not having the other mechanics aligned with that can ruin the experience. There are many games that fall into this category.

However, Nintendo has mastered this particular aspect as this giant majority of the time makes enjoyable games. The gaming giant doesn’t compromise when it comes to game design, and that is why it has a pretty massive fandom.

Why it matters: A game can be a lot more fun without realistic graphics but with great game design.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Is The Latest Game In The Series

A former designer at Nintendo Takaya Imamura who has had a pretty solid experience at Nintendo shares why this company dishes out great games. He has worked under Shigeru Miyamoto and he is really a legend in the gaming industry. That man is behind the most popular Nintendo series such as Zelda and Super Mario.

In an interview with Gamescom Imamura revealed how Miyamoto is able to create such games again and again.

Generally speaking, he’s a really kind, hard working person, “but when it comes to game design, he doesn’t accept compromise.

Imamura explained that he was really proud to work under this legend due to his approach to game design. He thinks the way this man approaches game design is the way to be number one at anything in the world. The Mario franchise is the most sold franchise in the history of gaming and it is for a reason.

Super Mario Galaxy
Nintendo Focuses Way More On Gameplay Than Focusing On Next-Gen Graphics

Imamura’s words have weight as Nintendo really doesn’t compromise when it comes to game design. Games from this publisher really don’t have new-gen graphics but they still sell a lot; why? Because they are fun to play.

Other developers should learn from this approach as many are still chasing next-gen graphics and the open world. Not every game needs to be like that every game does need to have a compelling game design.

How Is The AVerMedia GC515 X’TRA GO Different?

The AVerMedia GC515 X’TRA GO offers several advancements compared to its predecessors and competitors in the handheld gaming capture market. One significant difference is its ability to serve as a capture card and a docking station together for handheld gaming PCs. This sets it apart from earlier models, which were more limited to one functionality. Moreover, the GC515 stands out with its built-in SD card functionality compared to competitors. It lets users record directly onto an SD card without connecting to an external display.

Packaging & Unboxing

Unboxing the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 feels like opening a premium product. You first notice the minimalist packaging, with images of the X’TRA GO GC515 on the front and its key features displayed on the sides. The box itself feels sturdy. As you lift the lid, you’ll see the GC515 in a custom foam, which ensures the device is well-protected. Beneath the dock, you’ll find the essential box contents tucked away.

Design

The Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 is perfect for those on the go because it is portable, lightweight, and small. It comes in two color options, light and dark, to match a variety of portable gaming devices. For this review, I received the black version. In this variant, you can dock your portable device onto a see-through blue strip. This two-tone design is stylish with the AVerMedia logo on the back half.

The low-profile shape and rubberized underfoot ensure it won’t slide or tilt while in use despite its surprisingly lightweight of 176 grams. While it does support a wide variety of handheld devices, you can’t adjust the dock or slot. In fact, many devices just sit in the dock without being locked in. All in all, the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 is sleek and minimalist. I like that most features just require attention to the large record button and LED light.

Ports

Despite its small size, Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 has included an adequate number of ports, all of which are simple to recognize. The device’s rear side features three USB-C ports: one for connecting to a smartphone or handheld using DisplayPort over USB, another for power and passthrough/charging for the connected device, and a third for connecting to a PC. This third port lets you stream content, record directly from your PC, and customize the default settings.

Furthermore, it has an HDMI 2.0 port that can pass through up to 4K with 60FPS to a screen. In addition, two USB 3.0 ports enable us to connect peripherals like controllers or a mouse and keyboard and a switch that enables Card Reader mode. This mode allows you to connect to a PC and have the microSD storage appear as an external device. Furthermore, the device has a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm audio connector on the left side, allowing you to connect a headset.

In addition to charging and docking, the dock’s hub function is top-notch. This lets you easily play games on TV using a controller and keyboard. We all know that playing games on a Handheld PC may be challenging at times, but this setup makes it simple to play from the comfort of your sofa and even makes using the keyboard and a controller a breeze.

WARNING: Be aware that the dock requires a separate 65W power brick to function, which is not included in the box. If you’re planning to use the docking and charging features simultaneously, make sure you have a compatible power supply on hand,

Docking

Now, let’s go over the dock’s main uses individually. First, let’s cover the docking feature since it is its primary feature. Upon opening the package, when I saw the dock that could connect several handheld devices. My first reaction was presumably the same as any other individual would have. How is it possible that this dock would be able to accommodate various sizes of different handheld devices?

This is possible because its connection mechanism cannot be adjusted to fit any specific device. When in use, the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 only uses a rotating USB-C cable that comes out of the dock’s base. Obviously, this is the only feasible solution if you want your dock to be compatible with a wide range of handheld devices. At the moment, this USB-C approach seems to be our best option.

Additionally, remember that the dock needs a 65W power brick to work. Unfortunately, it does not come with the device. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue since handheld PCs often have such a power brick. Ultimately, the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515’s docking feature is, in my opinion, nothing more than a stand and a cable attached to it. It would be unfortunate if docking were its only feature. The good news is that it isn’t.

Recording

Streaming and recording games is a breeze with the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515.

Since it serves as an interface with display-out and acts as a capture card, you only have to insert an SD card to get going. Afterwards, simply press the big and satisfyingly bulky button to begin recording onto your SD card. The front LED light will flash red to let you know it has begun. Comparatively, the LED will return to its solid blue color once you press the button again to stop.

To view the recording, simply toggle the dock’s back switch to the on position, and your handheld device will access the SD card as if it were a standard drive. The Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 internal capture card records directly through the HDMI display-out signal, so connecting it to a TV or external monitor captures whatever you see on the screen. Without an external display connection, the dock essentially serves as a makeshift monitor, mirroring the screen on the handheld device.

PRO TIP: Make sure to utilize the microSD card recording feature if you’re frequently on the go. Pair this with a high-speed, high-capacity SD card (up to 1TB) for smooth recording, especially with higher resolutions like 1080p at 120 fps.

Performance

Everything is flawless in terms of quality. Using the dock’s capture card, you can record in 4K with 30 fps, 1440p with 60 fps, and 1080p with 120 FPS. Your recordings will be saved as fragmented MP4 files, ranging from regular, good, and optimal quality with H.265 or H.264 encoding. For most of my uses, I’ve found that 1080p at 60 FPS, H.264, and optimal quality give the best results regarding speed, image quality, and file size.

This is just my personal preference. You are free to tweak all of these settings to your liking. Regarding audio capturing, I have one issue. The GC515 can record audio from an external display or a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but it won’t pick up sound from the handheld device’s built-in speakers. Therefore, if you aren’t connecting your device to a display, speakers or 3.5mm headphones are your best bet.

Software

Speaking of software, I was quite pleased by how easy it was to set up and customize the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 using the Avermedia Streaming Centre. Here, you can update the dock’s firmware, adjust the recording settings, and more. You should be able to keep your Streaming Centre settings preserved regardless of whether the software is active.

The best possible purpose for this device is streaming, and everything works well for that. Assuming you are using a Windows handheld device, you can use OBS on your device to stream your games. On the other hand, you can try to set up a complex but workable intermediate capture card between your handheld device and another PC. This is exactly the same thing the GC515 does so, but it’s much easier.

You only have to connect it, and the streaming PC or laptop should automatically detect the docked handheld device as a video source. Finding the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 as an input video should be as simple as adding a video-capturing device source. However, you should use your own USB-C to USB-A cable since the one provided by Avermedia is short which is only six inches long, and will likely not be enough for a connection to a streaming PC.

Should You Buy It?

Buy it if

You Want an All-in-One Docking and Capture Solution: The Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 offers docking functionality and game recording in a single device. This is a solid choice if you need a versatile dock that allows seamless switching between streaming, charging, and using peripherals.

You’re a Handheld Gamer: If you frequently game on handheld devices, this dock provides an excellent way to enhance your gaming experience by allowing you to play on bigger screens while offering the option to record your gameplay.

You Want Standalone Recording: The GC515 can record gameplay directly to an SD card without a PC connection. This makes it highly convenient for users who are constantly on the go and need an easy way to capture content.

Don’t Buy it if

You Don’t Plan to Stream or Record: If you’re mainly interested in the dock for charging and connectivity purposes, the $200 price tag might be steep, especially when cheaper alternatives without capture features exist.

You Prefer a Fully Adjustable Dock: The dock’s fixed design cannot be adjusted to fit various device thicknesses. If you switch between handheld devices frequently or need a more flexible docking solution, you might find the lack of adjustability inconvenient.

Final Verdict

My experience with the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515 has been unique. I think this is one of the most intriguing gaming hardware that has come out recently. Thanks to this simple and intuitive approach, I can turn my handheld device into a console connecting to an external display, greatly improving and enhancing my gaming experience.

Having said that, I think $200 is a little much if you’re just interested in the hub’s usefulness and not its recording capabilities. This shifts our focus to those who intend to stream or record their gaming footage. And that’s not at all problematic. After all, this is the intended purpose of the GC515 and how it was marketed as a portable dock that can also be used for straightforward recording and streaming.

As an added benefit, it comes with additional hub features, further expanding the versatility and convenience of portable gaming. And if you’re not someone who often streams or records, like me, this device might want you to start it. In fact, it certainly raised my interest in streaming. Ultimately, those seeking a more convenient and superior solution for recording or streaming from their handheld device can go for the Avermedia X’TRA GO GC515.
