A legal analyst has claimed that Ubisoft is breaking the law with its controversial mentorship program.
It is breaking the law because the program fully excludes men and is only for women and non-binary individuals.
However, the mentorship program claims to promote diversity and inclusivity in the gaming industry.
It’s no surprise that Ubisoft has been the subject of a lot of controversy lately. From failed expectations in its new AAA releases to failing stocks because of bad overall performance, gamers have spoken out against a lot. However, the company may have gotten into one of its biggest mess-ups.
A legal analyst has claimed that Ubisoft is “breaking the law” with its recent and polemical mentorship program. The program explicitly states that it’s only for women and non-binary individuals, excluding men, despite its promises to promote diversity and inclusivity.
Why it matters: Ubisoft’s alleged violation of the law under the guise of diversity with its controversial mentorship program suggests that legal repercussions may soon follow.
In his recent YouTube video, legal analyst Andrew Esquire reacted to the Ubisoft mentorship program and clarified that it’s illegal. Additionally, Esquire argued that based on real players, the program should consist of many straight men. Because of diversity, he claims there can be Asian men and other ethnicities, but the mentorship would still include many men.
So Ubisoft did something illegal. What I think is that somebody who is actually damaged by that, who is not picked for mentorship or leadership should bring a case.
– Andrew Esquire
Esquire also points out that Disney recently got into trouble with the law over the same issue. So, Ubisoft might end up catching a case as well.
A snippet from the controversial Ubisoft mentorship program that excludes men.
However, Ubisoft’s one saving grace from the law could be its claim that the program is not an internship or an employment opportunity. And the hired individuals would not work on any of the studio’s actual game projects.
It’s unclear whether legal action will be taken against Ubisoft because of the mentorship program. After all, it is not the first time the company has made controversial moves—in its games or real life—for the sake of “diversity.”

The PS5 Pro can run games at much higher resolutions than its base counterpart.
A leak highlights enhanced graphical settings, a higher resolution, and a steady 60FPS for this console compared to the original hardware.
These settings were achieved without PSSR.
The PS5 Pro was an open secret for months, but PlayStation recently acknowledged its existence. Following last week’s reveal, the console has received plenty of attention, both good and bad.
An egregious price point aside, consumers have not been too impressed with the actual PS5 Pro presentation since it failed to showcase the new console’s capabilities. However, a leaker has given fans a glimpse of what to expect, stating that the PS5 Pro can hold 60FPS at resolutions as high as 1600p-2160p.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s mid-gen refresh has received criticism for being pointless. This leak shows real-world results that may convince audiences that this is not the case.
The latest details come from Moore’s Law is Dead, a source that has proven quite reliable on PS5 Pro information in the past.
He compares one instance of a game running on the base PS5 and the mid-gen upgrade to highlight a few key differences. For starters, the base console was limited to a dynamic resolution of 1080p-1600p.
Using a mixture of medium and high settings at this resolution, it achieved an unstable 45-60FPS. With the PS5 Pro’s 50% rasterization boost, the same game was able to achieve a dynamic resolution between 1600p and 2160p.
All settings were also up to the maximum, and the console held a steady 60FPS. While this may not be indicative of every game on the upgraded model, it should give fans a solid idea of what to expect.
It is also important to note that one of PlayStation’s key new features, PSSR upscaling, was not used to achieve these results.
PSSR Upscaling Has A Lot of Potential
Elsewhere, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman recently shared his thoughts on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth running on the new hardware. He comments that the PS5 Pro does a wonderful job and shows a night and day difference.
More testing is still needed to draw further conclusions, but this leak is certainly more encouraging than PlayStation’s lackluster PS5 Pro reveal. The console arrives in November, so fans should expect even more information to show up soon.

Insomniac Games is already hiring for their next project.
A job listing we spotted suggests that the developers may be hiring for the next game in the Spider-Man franchise.
It could also be for the Venom Spin-off, which has been rumored to be in development for a long time.
Following the recent Insomniac Games leak, the studio has been quiet about its projects and even confirmed that it has no plans to share any news on Wolverine.
However, we spotted a job listing for the Senior Gameplay Animator that suggests the studio is hiring for the next open-world Spider-Man adventure. The job listing specifically points to work on open-world animations and hero traversal in the responsibilities section.
Why it matters: Spider-Man 3 has a lot of potential, and it could be released as a PS6 launch title if the developer starts working on it now.
Insomniac Job Listing Suggests A Spider-Man Game is In Development
Insomniac Games has recently started hiring for multiple positions, and the job listing for the Senior Gameplay Animator asks for experience in hero traversal, combat, boss, mission, and open-world animations.
Gameplay responsibilities include hero traversal, combat, boss, mission and open world animations at the highest level using advanced skills in game engine tools.
-Insomniac
While these could also be for the Wolverine project, going by all the recent footage from the leaks, Wolverine appears to have a linear map.
Therefore, we believe the job listing is likely for the next Spider-Man entry, which is inevitable after last year’s great success. A recent report has also suggested that a canceled multiplayer Insomniac project may also return in Spider-Man 3.
However, the team could also be hiring for the Venom spin-off spotted in recent leaks since Venom’s gameplay from Spider-Man 2 could be explored further in an open-world setting. Still, we would bet on Spider-Man 3 between the two options for obvious reasons.
Venom Spin-off Could Also Be In Works
The next Spider-Man entry is still a few years away, as the studio is currently working on Wolverine, which is rumored to be coming next year. After the recent leaks, it is also possible that this particular superhero title may be delayed to 2026.
Overall, it’s great to see that Insomniac Games has potentially started hiring for Spider-Man 3. Since the expectations are already high, the team can use this early start to ensure it meets fan expectations.

The EU Consumer Org has accused big giants in the gaming industry of violating consumer protection laws.
The organization thinks these companies are bending the rules in their favour to earn profits.
It has demanded that video game companies stop these unfair practices.
The European Consumer Organization has recently accused many developers and publishers of breaching EU consumer protection laws. Ubisoft, EA, and Epic Games are some of the renowned ones among the accused.
The organization seems to be calling on the authorities to ensure that these developers and publishers play by the rules. This is being done to provide consumers with a safe gaming environment.
Why it matters: Live service titles are often just about the microtransactions, which no one is fond of, but some developers and publishers still force them into games while others don’t.
Ubisoft Stock Value Has Plummeted By Over 80% in 5 Years
In a recent press release, the European Consumer Organization notified the European Commission and the European Network Consumer Authorities about the companies that they believe are breaching the EU Consumer Protection Laws.
Companies’ claims that gamers prefer in-game premium currencies are wrong:
Many consumers find this unnecessary step misleading and prefer buying items directly with real money.
-The Eu Consumer Org
One major claim from the org is that these companies claim fans prefer in-game currencies. However, that is completely wrong, as this step could be misleading for many. The org also notes that consumers often can’t see the real cost of digital items.
This leads to overspending because in-game purchases are displayed in in-game currency. The organization believes in-game purchases should always be displayed in real money. Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Mojang Studios, Roblox Corporation, Supercell and Ubisoft were the main publishers mentioned in the press release.
The organization also pointed out that children are vulnerable to such tactics. According to the organization, children in Europe spend an average of €39 per month on in-game purchases. This shows that something needs to be done by how the virtual currency is being displayed in games.
BEUC has noticed this bending of rules in the virtual market, and the Director General, Agustín Reyna, states that in the online world, no company should be able to bend the rules to make profits. A virtual world should abide by the rules that are applicable in the real world.
The Director General also stated that in-game currencies are purposely tricking consumers and are also taking a big toll on children. Moreover, the organization wants the CPC-Network to start coordinated enforcement and demands that the relevant companies stop such practices for consumers.

The live service genre has become one of the most controversial in the industry.
While many believe it is already over for the genre following many failures, Ibelieve it still has great potential.
Only if developers start to care about the player experience instead of being greedy, like in Helldivers 2, can they achieve great success.
The live service genre has become one of the hot topics in recent times, as almost every big publisher in the industry has released or developed a live service project.
While I was a big fan of the genre when titles like Fortnite and PUBG were released, as they offered so much quality content at a very reasonable cost, the developers’ greed ruined this genre.
Following the countless recent failures in the genre, such as Concord, Skull & Bones, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and many others that couldn’t even be released, most fans believe the genre is already over.
However, I believe live service is still one of the stunning genres in the industry. It hasn’t been fully explored yet, but it will only be fun and remarkable when developers stop being greedy.
Why it matters: PlayStation has already seen a significant loss in the genre as the company has been counting big times on live service titles.
Recent Failures Have Disappointed Fans To The Next Level
Concord Was Shut Down Just Two Weeks After Its Launch
This year has been the worst for the fans of the live service genre as most of the major titles released this year were significant flops, and titles like Helldivers 2, which nobody saw coming, won everyone’s hearts.
2024 started with the release of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which was in development for seven years and was developed by one of my favorite studios, Rocksteady Studios, developers behind the Batman trilogy.
However, the game was a major flop, as the team lacked the multiplayer experience. This also caused the studio to lay off employees, and Warner Bros. has also faced much loss because of this failure. Still, it wasn’t the only disappointing live service title released this year.
Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones was in development for around a decade and finally released this year. According to the stats, it saw a worse launch than Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and joined the list of the worst releases of the year.
Concord has also become the latest industry failure. The title was shut down just two weeks after its launch, and PlayStation is already refunding the players who purchased it.
Many studios have also been closed or seen layoffs following a poor launch of a live service title they worked on. However, I believe they deserve it as most of them are only chasing money out of the genre without caring about the fans’ interest.
Helldivers 2 Proof That Not All Live Service Titles Are Bad
Helldivers 2 Was The Biggest PlayStation Launch on PC
Despite many failures in the live service genre, particularly in 2024, there was one title that I didn’t see coming, which also became one of the biggest hits of the year: Helldivers 2, selling over 12 million copies in just three months after its launch.
The game director of Helldivers 2 has also discussed how publishers are only using the genre to generate money and are missing out on its massive potential, which I believe is one reason why Arrowhead Game Studio has seen tremendous success.
The game director has also claimed that live service games, which come with in-game purchases, shouldn’tcost $70 at launch as players are already going to spend money on the title.
When most of the publishers chase after the money, Helldivers 2 cares more about the players’ experience and was launched at a price of $40. It stands apart from the crowd and is a vital reminder that not every release in the genre is terrible.
Live Service Titles Can Still Be Remarkable
Rocket League Is Among The Successful Releases In The Genre
Though many of the fans are already tired of the genre and believe that the end is near, I’m looking for a better side of it, as I think the genre has not yet been fully explored, and it has great potential.
Suppose the developer starts caring more about the player experience. In that case, they will eventually earn money from it, which is their ultimate goal, but developing a title only with the intention of generating money isn’t a good idea at all.
Therefore, I believe if more publishers adopt releases like Rocket League, GTA Online, and Helldivers 2 as ideal, which offer quality content and don’t provide special perks for spending money on the title, the genre could make a solid comeback.

Take-Two is one of the biggest publishers in the gaming industry.
The publisher’s lineup for next year looks insane, with releases like GTA 6, Borderland 4, Judas, and Mafia: The Old Country.
If things go well, the publisher may see another level of success by the end of the year.
2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in the gaming industry, and just like everyone, I have high expectations from some of the biggest titles coming next year.
Over 100 games have already been confirmed to be coming next year. I have noticed that some of the most anticipated titles are mainly from one publisher, and that’s Take-Two.
The publisher is going all in next year with the next entries in iconic franchises like GTA, Mafia, and many others, and it may be the company’s most important and biggest year yet.
Why it matters: Despite many massive titles coming next year, the most notable releases come from Take-Two.
GTA 6 Is Going To Be The Biggest Release of 2025
GTA 6 Is Coming Fall Next Year
Of course, my personal most anticipated release is going to the next entry in the iconic Grand Theft Auto franchise, GTA 6, which I have been waiting for almost a decade.
The developers have confirmed that the title will be released next year. Although many have been worried about the delay due to a recent rumor, a reliable leaker has confirmed that no such delay is being planned.
The franchise is so massive that many developers are already delaying their titles to avoid clashing with GTA 6. Still, I’m surprised to see how Take-Two is going to release all the titles without minding the clash with other games.
The Mafia Franchise Is Finally Returning
Mafia: Definitive Edition Is Returning After Eight Years
During the latest Gamescom 2024, Hangar 13 surprised everyone with the announcement of Mafia: The Old Country, a prequel to the original Mafia game coming next year.
While many fans were concerned that Mafia’s launch in the same year would clash with GTA 6, I think it’s only going to make 2025 a more interesting and massive year for the industry as both franchises are too big to see any impact.
However, I hope Take-Two sets enough of a gap between both of the releases so that I can enjoy time freely. I have waited many years for both of the titles, and it’s so exciting to know both of them are coming in the same year.
Although the release date of Mafia: The Old Country hasn’t been announced yet, it will likely be in early 2025. However, I don’t mind any release time as long as I get my hands on the title.
Take-Two Has Even More Titles To Offer Next Year
Judas Is Coming From Bioshock Creators
Not only is Take-Two publishing GTA 6 and the Mafia: The Old Country next year, but the publisher has a lot more to offer fans.
One such title is the next entry in the long-running Borderland franchise, Borderlands 4 from 2K Games, which is also coming next year. It’s already been a half-decade since the last entry in the franchise, so anticipation is high.
Another anticipated release coming from the publisher next year is Judas, which, although published by Ghost Story Games, still falls under Take-Two’s domain. My first impressions of the game have been highly positive.
Recent reports have also suggested that the title may be released in March of next year. While many have been waiting for the next entry in the BioShock franchise, its creator has given fans this instead, so my expectations are quite high from the developers.
2025 has many amazing titles, like Death Stranding 2 and many others, but I think GTA 6 and Mafia: The Old Country are among the most anticipated ones, and it’s insane to know both of these are coming from the same publisher.
Take-two is already one of the biggest publishers in the industry, and by the end of 2025, the publisher could reach even greater success than many may not have expected.

Capcom is currently working on two remakes, Re: Code Veronica and Zero.
However, a reliable leaker has revealed that they won’t be as ambitious as the Resident Evil 4 Remake.
According to him, RE4 was the crown jewel of remakes, so the fans should not expect the Code Veronica remake to be as good.
Capcom outdid itself with the Resident Evil 4 remake. The developer turned the game upside down and gave more than nostalgia to those who were fans of the original game. It is the best example of a remake gone well.
Due to this, many are hoping for similar types of remakes from Capcom. Resident Evil: Code Veronica is said to be the next remake, which is being developed by the same team that worked on RE4 Remake.
However, a reliable leaker has revealed that the game won’t be as ambitious as the Part 4 remake so fans should keep expectations in check.
Why it matters: Resident Evil: Code Veronica is hailed as one of the best RE games, so the fandom is quite excited about the remake.
RE: Veronica and Zero Remakes Won’t Be As Ambitious As The RE4 Remake
This leak comes directly from the Dusk Golem, who has proven to be a credible leaker, especially for the Resident Evil series. He mentioned in his Discord channel that only two remakes are currently in active development.
The first one is Resident Evil Zero, and the other is Code Veronica. However, Capcom doesn’t aim to make these remakes as good as the RE4 one. He also confirmed that Resident Evil 9 is also in development.
Capcom don’t really plan for there to be A Remake as “ambitious” as RE:4
-Dusk Golem
He also said that the Resident Evil 4 remake was the crown jewel of remakes, and it was the most challenging one to tackle in scale, scope, and expectation. We do agree with that, as Capcom did the unthinkable with it. There is a reason why the remake managed to achieve 7 million sales in just a year.
That said, fans have been demanding the RE: Code Veronica remake for a while now. So, they might be a little disappointed by this news, but we don’t think Capcom would compromise on the quality.
Fans had high expectations as the remake was being developed by the same team that worked on RE4 Remake. While it might not match the quality of their previous, it is likely to live up to the hype.

Palworld instantly broke many records on Steam at launch.
Despite the successful launch, the CEO might be considering transitioning the game to a live service model.
While the CEO thinks there are many benefits to transitioning, it will also make things complicated.
Pocketpair CEO was successful in making a Pokemon-like game called Palworld, which sold millions of copies on Steam. However, after the game’s success, how would the studio pursue it in the future?
The CEO discussed this in detail with a magazine, saying that the game’s future has not been decided yet and that it will shift to transition anytime soon.
Why it matters: The CEO is not interested in switching the game to a free-to-play or live-service title.
Palworld Was A Huge Success
Palworld was released in 2024 and became one of the surprising releases because, as a large-scale game usually does, it attracted the attention of many players.
In an interview with ASCII.jp, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe described the game’s future plans, saying that things have not been decided yet. The transition to the game as a live service title is complicated because, first of all, millions of players have already bought the game on Steam.
The game was not initially designed with that approach in mind, so there would be many challenges involved in taking it down the live-service path.
-Takuro Mizobe
The live service transition is certainly beneficial for the game as it increases its overall lifespan and adds big revenue from the skins and battle pass, as seen with other live service titles. However, the game is not made that way for these purposes, so it’s really hard to make that transition.
PUBG Took Several Years To Transition
Furthermore, the CEO exemplified PUBG and Fall Guys’ transition to free-to-play from a paid game; however, that move took several years.
Needless to say, the transition is not going to happen soon, and the game will continue to sustain itself as a paid game on Steam. There are also reports of the game extending to PlayStation. So, the sales will go further, and once again, it will revive following the release of PS5.

Suda51, the developer behind creative IPs like Killer is Dead and Lollipop Chainsaw, is not fond of Metacritic.
He states that developers now have a formula for creating games that score well on the platform, which harms creativity.
The developer says he does not care about review scores and focuses on producing fun experiences.
Metacritic has become an important part of the gaming industry today. AAA studios strive for the celebrated 90+ rating on this platform, while audiences are also quick to judge games based on their scores.
Because of Metacritic’s current status, developers often celebrate positive scores. On the other hand, lower-than-anticipated scores can be discouraging. However, the famous Suda51 has a different mindset. He finds that this platform is given too much importance today.
Why it matters: The gaming industry is producing many big titles year after year. Despite these huge releases, there has been a distinct lack of projects that break away from established trends.
The Top Rated Titles On Metacritic This Year
Following the release of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, Suda51 discussed why the gaming industry lacks unique projects today.
He argues that Metacritic is a major reason for the industry’s current lack of creativity. According to the developer, the industry has landed on an established formula to develop games that score high on this platform.
This leads to homogenization, creating a situation where bigger companies are no longer interested in taking risks.
Everyone cares too much about the numbers. It’s gotten to a point where there’s a set formula.
However, Suda51 is not interested in aiming for high Metacritic scores. The developer has always focused on gaming experiences that he finds fun, leading to a cult following for many of his great albeit niche titles.
For context, Suda51 has been involved in projects like Shadows of the Damned and No More Heroes besides Lollipop Chainsaw, giving him more than enough experience with projects that take a lot of risks and stand out from the crowd.
We also agree with the veteran Japanese developer since the traditional Metacritic score system is not always a great indicator of a great experience.
For instance, a release like Black Myth: Wukong scored a fairly modest 82/100 on the platform, yet it has become the undisputed biggest release of 2024. This disconnect highlights that audiences found the action RPG much more enjoyable than the critics.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussed with the Biden administration the need for policies to support data center expansion and AI development in the US.
The meeting addressed the high energy demands of data centers and the Energy Department’s role in providing clean power sources and financial support.
Global electricity use is expected to increase by 15% to 20% in the next decade due to the growing energy needs of data centers.
Speaking with CNBC following a meeting at the White House with the Biden administration, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussed the future of AI development and the necessary steps to achieve it, along with other prominent tech leaders supporting AI development.
Why it matters: The discussion about supporting data center expansion and AI development is crucial for the US to maintain its leadership in the global AI race.

According to Huang, the meeting was centered on how the US government might support the growth of data centers throughout the country, especially by implementing policies that would eventually help the US keep its lead in the global AI competition.
In response to whether Washington is doing enough to compete with China, the CEO of Nvidia said that the current administration is committed to doing as much as possible as quickly as possible.
Large data centers need a lot of energy to run, which was discussed during the meeting. The Energy Department will assist data center operators in locating clean, reliable power sources and new funding options like grants, loans, and tax credits.
According to The Financial Post, between 15% and 20% more electricity will be consumed globally over the next ten years due to increased energy consumption caused by new data centers and other causes.
It remains to be seen how well Nvidia will lead in the modernization of data centers. However, it’s important to remember that Nvidia guarantees Blackwell will outperform its current H100-class devices by 2.5–5 times and have more than double the memory and bandwidth.

AC Shadows dev Ubisoft has confirmed in an interview that it is working with experts on the controversial game.
It has adopted the help of world-renowned experts to respect Japanese culture and avoid offending anyone.
The entry is set to come out on November 15, 2024, for PC, macOS, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
AC Shadows has been in hot waters ever since info about it started coming out. Despite much anticipation, a good chunk of the community was also disappointedat controversial decisions. Ubisoft previously apologized to the offended group; now it appears to have taken actual steps to mitigate the issues.
The devs have recently confirmed in an interview that they are working with “world-renowned experts” to develop Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This decision will ensure that Ubisoft will stay accurate to the history of feudal Japan—albeit with many “creative decisions,” as you’d expect in an AC game.
Why it matters: The decision to consult experts in Japanese culture suggests that Ubisoft is trying to develop AC Shadows by making the most appropriate choices. After much controversy, the developers are trying their best to respect Japanese culture.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will take place during the ancient feudal Japan.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Ubisoft’s art director Thierry Dansereau clarifies that offending anyone has not been their goal. Rather, with the help of experts, a lot of attention has been paid to staying as respectful of Japanese culture as possible.
“We’ve worked with a lot of experts, to just understand well the time period.”
While a plethora of gamers are excited to get their hands on AC Shadows, the wider community sentiment still appears to be negative, as clarified by a popular analyst in the past.
One of AC Shadows’ main protagonists, Yasuke, has caused much controversy because of his samurai portrayal.
Most of the controversy began because Yasuke was dubbed as a samurai in the upcoming title, which many historians have disagreed with over the years. Another group argues that a black foreigner has been chosen as a protagonist for the sake of diversity.

The morale of the remaining Xbox team is reportedly very low after the recent layoffs.
The employees are confused about Xbox’s strategy going forward.
Combining all the layoffs, the company has reduced its workforce by over 2500 people.
Xbox just experienced another round of layoffs that saw the company reducing its workforce by 650 more people. This takes the overall number of laid-off employees to 2,500. The remaining Xbox staff is confused about the company’s strategy.
Why it matters: Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was supposed to be a massive breakthrough. However, the company has had a rough time ever since, sacrificing many employees and studios.
The morale of the Xbox team is very low after recent layoffs
According to Tom Warren of The Verge, he talked to several Xbox employees, and the morale at the company is very low. The layoffs have had a great impact on them, and they are now confused about Microsoft’s strategy.
Phil Spencer was recently asked about the layoffs and studio closures. Defending his decision, he said that the one on the top often has to make hard decisions. And that he has to sustain and grow a business.
Employees are confused about Xbox’s strategy going forward
Yes, no company would make layoffs for fun, but Microsoft should be more clear with its approach. The remaining employees at the company aren’t even sure what will happen to them. What if there’s another round, and they get laid off, too?
Nonetheless, Microsoft isn’t the only one doing this. In this time of high-budget games and failing stocks, other companies such as PlayStation, Ubisoft, and Rocksteady have had to follow the same path.
But the uncertainty in the industry is undoubtedly the highest it has ever been. A previous report even suggested that many developers are leaving the industry altogether to work in different fields.
