I Tuned My RAM To CL28 6400MHz On AM5 And Got Up To 28% More Performance For Free

Story Highlight
  • RAM overclocking can be complicated, but taking it step-by-step with smaller increments can help you find stable overclocks faster.
  • There’s a clear performance uplift by tuning RAM manually rather than using EXPO settings in Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.
  • 1% lows are just as important as the average FPS, as the former ensures smooth gameplay without dips.

I have been in the PC industry for many years, and many gamers I know installed a new RAM kit in their PC and were happy with the XMP or EXPO profile offered on the kits. This technique worked until AM4 CPUs and still works with AM5 X3D CPUs along with Intel’s offerings. But the rest? It seemed good until I tuned my RAM to CL28 6,400MHz on an AM5 CPU and got up to 28% more performance for free. I know this sounds ridiculous but stay with me. The main performance boost is in the 1% lows, and I’ll brief you all through it, so sip your coffee and enjoy the rest.

How I Overclocked My RAM

You can always manually overclock your RAM kit, in addition to using Intel’s XMP or AMD’s EXPO settings. I won’t get into the nitty-gritty of it, but if you’re new, please read our guide on how to overclock RAM. For me, the first step for manually overclocking RAM was to increase its frequency. The main goal was to achieve a 1:1 FCLK while keeping the frequency as high as possible. I managed to achieve that at 6,400MHz, a 400MHz boost from the original EXPO settings.

Once I was satisfied with the frequency, I started decreasing the timings (typically CAS, tRCD, tRP, and tRAS) to reduce the latency. From EXPO’s 30-40-40-40 timings, I went down to CL28-38-38-36 to reach the kit’s limits. During this entire process, I used ZenTimings and AIDA64 to monitor my changes, whereas for stability testing, I used Y-Cruncher and TestMem5.

My PC Specifications

Before I move forward with the memory tuning results, you must know my PC’s specifications. Here’s a quick breakdown of what I had on my test bench:

These components allowed me to freely play around with my RAM’s timings and frequency without worrying about bottlenecking issues.

Gaming Benchmarks From Tuning The RAM Kit

The biggest improvement I saw in the gaming benchmarks was the higher 1% lows with the tuned RAM. Of course, it goes without saying that there was an improvement in the average FPS as well. Here are the results from the benchmarks:

Gaming performance after DDR5 tuning on AM5
Gaming performance after DDR5 tuning on AM5

There are multiple takeaways from these benchmarks. Firstly, not every game benefits greatly from overclocking RAM, such as the meager two FPS gain in Forza Horizon 5. Secondly, the overclocked kit’s average FPS is around 6.3% higher than the EXPO’s, meaning that’s the amount of performance you’re leaving on the table.

That’s not all, however. As I stated earlier, the biggest change is in the 1% lows. The brunt of it can be seen in Marvel’s Spiderman Remastered, with the overclocked kit’s 1% lows exceeding by ~29%. Overall, the tuned kit’s 1% lows are roughly 15.2% higher.

Don’t Gloss Over The 1% Lows

Many people don’t notice the 1% lows when they’re checking out benchmarks of various PC components. However, 1% lows are important for smooth gaming. If the difference between the average FPS and 1% lows is too high, you’ll feel your game is laggy or glitching, and you’ll see frequent FPS dips.

These dips are usually caused by either a lack of memory, slower read/write by the storage drive, or a bottleneck by the CPU or GPU. That’s why whenever you’re keeping tabs on the FPS you’re getting in games, I advise you to monitor the 1% lows, too, to make sure you don’t face any sudden lags.

In the above benchmarks, we saw a discrepancy in the results because the RAM kit’s faster frequency led to better performance. That, combined with the FCLK lottery, can also help improve your performance.

My Take On RAM Tuning

After I tuned my RAM to CL28 6,400MHz on the Ryzen 7 9700X and got up to 28% more performance for free, I realized how much performance users are sleeping on in fear of damaging their hardware. It’s a strenuous process, for sure, but manually overclocking RAM has its benefits and is equally as rewarding.

This goes on to show that sometimes you don’t actually need a hardware upgrade; you need to know how to use what you have effectively. That being said, I understand concerns about hardware damage and the time you have to put in to achieve decent results, but sometimes, you can get a pretty neat performance boost.

So, if you’re still using slower DDR5 RAM kits such as 5,200MHz or 5,600MHz models, I advise you upgrade to 6,000MHz for Ryzen 7000 series processors and up to 6,400MHz for Ryzen 9000 series processors. Otherwise, you’ll likely miss out on performance, especially in faster E-sport competitive titles.

Ever Wondered Why Intel Has Fewer AIB Partners? Because NVIDIA Might Have Pulled Some Strings

Story Highlight
  • Intel is struggling to secure AIB partners even with its 2nd generation of graphics cards.
  • Nvidia is reportedly warning all its AIB partners to refrain from partnering with Intel.
  • Nvidia’s list of old scandals with ex-partners like XFX & EVGA makes the rumors more believable.

Intel has been in the CPU manufacturing business for far too long and has recently entered the graphics card market space with its Arc GPUs. However, their new venture didn’t go as planned; the Alchemist graphics cards were plagued with broken driver support. Issues like unusable supported features and extremely low performance in games were present, especially in DX9 titles. Fortunately, Intel immediately started to address these performance issues and overhaul driver optimization completely

The Return Of Budget Banger GPU

For a while, budget graphics cards have been quite disappointing, and offerings from AMD and Nvidia were underwhelming. However, we can finally see the rise of great budget graphics cards once again as Intel has released its Battlemage graphics cards. They have leveled up their game, and these cards are getting a lot of attention, especially the Intel Arc B580, which is giving strict competition to AMD and Nvidia. As seen in our B580 review, it not only tops the RX 7600 XT and RTX 4060 in performance but also takes leverage in terms of better pricing with its $250 MSRP.

Intel Arc B580

However, even after the positive reception this time around, we’re struggling to see the variants from known AIB partners such as ASUS, MSI, or Gigabyte. Now the question arises: why is such a giant and well-known company having trouble finding AIB partners? Is it because of the Intel itself, or is something else becoming a hindrance?

Nvidia’s Potential Involvement

One of the major reasons behind Intel’s lack of AIB partners might be due to Nvidia, from what we have seen online and according to the report given by the reputed Russian YouTuber, PRO Hi-Tech. It suggests that Nvidia may have a hand in this. According to the rumors, Nvidia is trying to pressure its AIB partners to not work with Intel at all and stay exclusively in touch with Nvidia. This is far worse than the case with AMD, where the AIB partners are not allowed to offer AMD their top variants, such as AORUS Xtreme & ROG Strix.

While the AIB partners do want to work with Intel and manufacture GPUs for them, Nvidia seems to be becoming the problem here. Besides these known GPU manufacturers, it appears Nvidia isn’t done yet, as they have threatened their Chinese AIB partners from collaborating with Intel at all. Otherwise, they can face a chip supply shortage or a complete ban altogether.

Why The Rumors Could Be True?

Why believe these rumors? That’s one big question and can only be addressed with an official statement. However, if we look at the history of Nvidia’s shady behavior, especially how it treats its AIB partners, the rumors seem to look more believable. Let’s take XFX for example. Back in the early 2000s era, XFX was one of the top AIB partners that was loved by the consumers. However, when XFX showed interest in partnering with AMD to reach a more diverse market, Nvidia didn’t seem to like it much. As a result, XFX ended its ties with Nvidia back in 2009 and partnered with AMD.

ASRock RX 7600 Phantom Gaming 8GB OC
ASRock RX 7600 Phantom Gaming 8GB OC

Skipping to September 2022, we came across yet another AIB partner being done with Nvidia’s strict business policies. This time, it was EVGA, which was a long-term Nvidia-exclusive AIB partner. In their defense, EVGA said that lack of communication regarding upcoming product information and minimal profit margins were the major reasons behind the termination of their partnership with Nvidia, as seen in our coverage.

They also stated that they aim to work independently from now on and would be better off as one. This was quite a shocker for the whole industry, including EVGA & Nvidia fans.

Such Practices Aren’t Welcome

Looking at all the rumors and Nvidia’s past anti-consumer and anti-business practices, we’re left with nothing but to believe these rumors after all, as they also come from reputable sources. However, it would be better for Nvidia to allow Intel to play on fair ground and not create hurdles for which it is being accused. Not to mention, these shady practices don’t suit such a giant & mature company as well.

China Has Approved The Release of 1,416 Games In 2024- A Record For 5 Years

Story Highlight
  • China gave licenses to over 1400 video games in 2024, a record-high tally since 2019.
  • Over 100 foreign games were a part of this number.
  • Video game sales in the country also rose by 7%, making it a successful year.

China and censorship are tales as old as time itself, and this courtesy also extends to the gaming industry. Only a handful of foreign titles are approved for release in the Asian country each year, and the National Press and Publication Administration (NPAA) keeps a close eye on which titles make the cut.

However, the agency has approved over 1,400 games this year, the highest number in China for over five years.

Why This Matters: China easing its grip on video game licenses is good news for the industry as the country is the second-largest market in the world, and the more video games it gets, the better.

China gaming
Restrictions On Video Games Have Improved Recently In China

The NPAA approved 122 domestic titles and 13 foreign video games in December, bringing the total up to 1,416 for the entire year. This is a huge leap from 2023, when only 1,075 video games were approved for commercial release in China.

Furthermore, 1,306 domestically produced games and 110 foreign titles were given the NPAA stamp in 2024. In contrast, a mere 977 local games and 98 international ones were cut last year, meaning video game development in China has seen a surge.

The Chinese government has strict guidelines on which titles will be commercially available in the country, as well as age restrictions. People under the age of 18 can only play games between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends and other holidays.

The gaming environment has improved in China recently, as only 500 titles made the cut in 2022 after some restrictions imposed by the government the year before came into effect.

2024 also ends up as the year with the highest number of games approved since 2019, which saw 1,500 titles get the nod from NPAA after a government restructure in 2018, in which a whopping 2,000 video games were approved in China.

With China’s first AAA title, Black Myth: Wukong, also debuting successfully last year, it’s obvious why the world’s second-largest market for video games is slowly warming up to the medium. With video game sales in the country also increasing by 7%, the future of the industry looks bright in China.

Manba One Ver 2 Controller Review: Offers Both Precision & Style

Many third-party gaming accessory manufacturers provide feature-rich gaming controllers for various platforms. Casual gamers typically opt for attractive features like interchangeable joysticks and RGB lighting when searching for third-party controllers. Subsequently, Manba is the latest company to cater to their needs with the Manba One Ver 2 wireless controller. Arguably, it could be one of this generation’s most distinctive gaming controllers.

The huge screen on the front is primarily the main reason behind that. Manba is a company that manufactures console accessories and controllers, and this one is their flagship model. It targets those seeking a third-party update for their Switch, PC, or mobile devices. This controller has many rich features and fascinating design choices, all at a somewhat reasonable price point.

So, the main question that most of you would want to ask is whether this wireless controller is only a gimmick or whether the Manba One Ver 2 makes every buck worth it. I tested the controller over the previous month, and the verdict was clear. Therefore, here is my review to decide if the $69.99 price tag justifies the controller’s performance.

Unlike the original Manba One, the Ver 2 uses Hall Effect technology in its joysticks, eliminating stick drift and enhancing precision. In comparison to competitors, the Manba One Ver 2 differentiates itself with onboard customization through its integrated display, a feature rarely found in other controllers that often depend on companion software. Lastly, the addition of a dedicated charging station adds convenience, a feature that is not typically bundled with controllers in this price range.

The translucent plastic shell that covers the controller’s front has been held to the chassis by magnets. This looks a little unpleasant, but the only upside is that you can see the mechanism that produces the rumbling inside the grips. The controller has white and silver components behind its translucent cover. Thankfully, this is avoidable with the black controller, which offers an opaque cover.

Notably, the faceplate’s flat surface prevents the need for anti-friction rings, allowing the rotation of each stick to seem incredibly smooth. I also like the use of textured materials. Moreover, the triggers have a shiny, metal look. Fortunately, it keeps your fingers from sliding around the Manba One Ver 2’s bumpers and triggers, providing an extra gripping texture.

Furthermore, good-quality plastic takes up most of the controller’s back, with a slightly distinct texture in a particular region. It is hardly apparent and quite subtle. I wish there were a different material for the grip region so that it would be more comfortable, especially for lengthy gaming marathons. Additionally, the Manba One Ver 2’s grips have bright Manba logos and RGB strips. These strips are not too bothersome and have a refreshing appearance. You can adjust the lighting effect and alternate from a solid color to seamless breathing.

Backside

On the back of the controller, we have pogo pins, an on/off switch, two trigger locks, and four programmable macro buttons that the controller settings can customize. Its most notable feature is the possibility to set these buttons to bind to a maximum of twenty buttons per bind. Compared to a single-button set-up, this has much more functionality since it lets you record multiple button configurations on the controller, which helps automate repetitive in-game actions.

Keep in mind that macro keys can only record inputs already present on the controller. Unfortunately, they cannot be used as additional, independent inputs. You’ve probably been asking why the Manba One Ver 2 has no battery door. This is because it contains a non-detachable battery, which you can charge by plugging in a standard USB-C cable or placing it in the charging dock through pogo pins.

Display

Display

Now for the display. In the middle of the controller, there is a huge 2-inch LED display that allows you to customize the controller. The pause, menu, and two more buttons are positioned beneath the D-pad and the right stick since the display covers the whole area between the XYAB buttons and the left stick. As a result, you need to use an extra finger to reach all the way down to the bottom to pause the game or touch the menu button.

I’ve been using the controller for more than a few weeks and have yet to become used to where the buttons are. Although the display is satisfactory, it has a poor resolution. Moreover, even though you can change the brightness, the brightest setting is still very low. Since I rarely have a look at it when gaming, I would say it isn’t an issue.

It’s only there to let me occasionally change some settings. The display shows the Manba logo, connectivity mode, and a tiny power indicator, and it is also quite frustrating that there is no option to turn it off while playing games. Thankfully, because of the built-in display, you can easily change the controller’s settings without the need for software.

Surprisingly, this gives you even more customization options than certain specific companion software, which usually provides greater flexibility than onboard controls. Pushing down the Home button allows you to navigate to the menu at any moment, which proved useful when I wanted to make rapid in-game changes. The D-pad and plus and minus buttons make moving through the different options simple. Ultimately, the user interface is intuitive and simple to use.

Controls

Compared to controllers with conventional potentiometers, the controller’s Hall Effect triggers and sticks provide a variety of improvements. They are less prone to drift issues over time and are more accurate and durable. In addition to completely removing stick drift, the growing common Hall Effect technology adds even more customization options to the controller. By customizing the thumbstick curve, you can control the degree to which thumbstick motions translate into in-game movements.

On the downside, the sticks on the Manba One Ver 2 are noticeably less rigid and have a lot less resistance if you’re used to using standard sticks on the controller. It took some time to get used to it, and initially, I had a lot of accidental stick movements. Thankfully, Manba has provided two longer sticks with every controller for those who like more accurate controls. You can install them by removing the cover and removing the stick to replace it without needing any tools.

The controller appears strange with the longer sticks, but they are essential for games that need accurate input. I have noticed that moving the controller to the left and right causes minor stick movements. Furthermore, the stick wiggles considerably in its neutral position, resulting in unintentional input. To counter this, I had to set up a tiny dead zone on rest that allowed me to fix that. Surprisingly, the problem does not exist with the standard short sticks.

The triggers also feature Hall Effect technology, and you can choose the point between 50 and 100% in which the whole stroke of the trigger is registered. Converting the trigger input to a button press is ideal for users who want to improve responsiveness. Although the triggers are smooth and well-damped, their travel range is slightly shorter than I expected.

Connectivity

Charging Dock

You can connect the controller using a USB-C cable, Bluetooth, or the included dongle. However, I was dissatisfied to see that the provided USB dongle only functions as a Bluetooth 5.0 receiver and not a 2.4 GHz receiver. While this isn’t a drawback that will affect everyone, it indicates that the controller only has a 125Hz rate and cannot be used on a PC without Bluetooth functionality.

Although Manba claims to have a polling rate of 800 Hz or more, this is only possible in wired mode. Surprisingly, the PC mode lacks Bluetooth connection support, so keep the dongle with you at all times. On the bright side, the fact that Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch have distinct profiles eliminates the need to connect the controller each time you switch between devices, which is fantastic.

Battery Life

A solid yet stylish charging station is a wonderful addition. Despite being plastic, the included charging station is surprisingly sturdy and has rubber feet to keep it from slipping. The station features pogo pins and a USB-C connection to charge the controller. An LED indicator shows green after the battery is charged completely and orange while charging.

The charging dock also has a handy space for storing the wireless dongle. The controller’s 1800 mAh non-removable battery can be charged when playing in wired mode. You have two options for charging it: either place the controller on the dock or connect a USB-C cable straight to the controller. It takes a while to fully charge the battery because it requires 5V 1A.

It charges quite slowly, as it took me more than four hours to fully recharge the controller. I wouldn’t think it’s an issue because you can charge and play simultaneously. Moreover, slower charging is ultimately better for the battery. Regarding the battery’s life, I consider it good because I was able to play for 12 hours on a single charge.

Performance

Additional Longer Sticks
Additional Longer Sticks

Playing the Manba One wirelessly with the dongle or with a USB-C connection did not cause any performance problems for me. For the most part, playing games on the Manba One is exciting. The buttons are tactile and delicate, and the sticks provide exact and smooth motions. However, because the triggers’ travel is too short to provide the type of precisely graded control you need from analog inputs, they cannot provide the ideal feedback.

It’s not the controller’s fault, but my main issue was adjusting to a slightly different layout and less durable sticks. The M buttons on the underside are uncomfortable and undersized, making them difficult to press during gaming. In my opinion, D-pads with distinct buttons for all four directions are always preferable to the Manba One’s integrated design since they provide me with greater control and accuracy in games where these inputs are important. You will probably overlook that, though, if this happens to be your first controller.

Should You Buy it?

Buy it if

✅You value precision and durability: The Manba One Ver 2’s Hall Effect joysticks eliminate drift and improve longevity.

✅You prefer seamless customization : With its 2-inch LED display for onboard customization, you can tweak settings on the go without relying on additional software.

✅You need multi-platform compatibility: The controller supports PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, making it a versatile choice for gamers with different platforms.

✅You want extensive macro functionality: The four programmable macro buttons, capable of binding up to 20 functions each, make it ideal for gamers who require advanced customization for their gameplay.

Don’t Buy it if

❌You are on a budget: The premium and advanced features of the Manba One Ver 2 come with a slightly higher price tag, which may not be suitable for budget-conscious buyers.

❌You need an ultra-lightweight controller: With its sturdy build and integrated LED display, the controller is slightly heavier than simpler models, which could be a concern for users who prioritize portability or comfort.

❌You prefer simpler interfaces: The LED display and onboard customization options might feel overwhelming or unnecessary for gamers who prefer straightforward plug-and-play controllers without complex settings.

❌You are a casual gamer: If you don’t require advanced features like Hall Effect joysticks or macro buttons, the Manba One Ver 2 may be overkill for your needs. A simpler and more affordable option might be better.

Final Verdict

Considering its pricing, the Manba One Ver 2 is a wonderful controller with plenty of customization options. Compared to other controllers I’ve used, it provides better onboard customization. Thanks to its LED screen, you can easily tweak and change settings to your heart’s delight. This enhanced the responsive and highly customizable thumbsticks and Hall Effect triggers, improving my PC and Switch games’ performance. It is a little pricey, yes.

However, you get many more features in exchange, such as a lengthy battery, extra sticks, various customization options, top-notch Hall Effect triggers and thumbsticks, and magnetic technology that prevents stick drift. This multi-platform controller is outstanding and performs well on all platforms. In my opinion, the controller’s built-in LED panel in the middle, which provides simple access to several settings, is its greatest feature and most apparent.

You can do anything on the screen without installing any software on your PC. Unfortunately, this controller has some shortcomings. On the downside, the Manba One Ver 2 has a few issues, including unpleasant clicky buttons and a less premium-feeling transparent shell design. Although it has a few minor flaws, its overall value justifies overlooking them.

BioWare Expected Dragon Age: The Veilguard To Sell 10M Copies In 3 Months, Claims Insider

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard has faced a lot of heat from the fandom, leading to an underwhelming launch.
  • As per an insider, BioWare was expecting the title to sell over 10 million copies in 3 months.
  • However, it has been nearly two months, and according to the same insider, the game has only sold less than 1.5 million copies.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was one of the most hyped games of the year, but the hype went down pretty quickly. The game has many DEI elements, which the majority of the gaming community doesn’t like.

The game even has a cutscene explaining how to apologize for misgendering someone. Many such instances killed the title’s hype, and BioWare refused to share its official sales figures

However, an insider recently revealed that the latest Dragon Age title has sold less than 1.5 million copies in almost two months, while the developer was expecting it to sell 10 million copies in three months

Why it matters: Dragon Age: The Veilguard was in development for almost a decade, meaning it took a plethora of resources to develop, so much fewer sales would not be enough to recoup the development cost.

Smash JT on YouTube has been reporting on many games for a while now, and he seems to have some sources that give him various insider information. He recently revealed that The Veilguard has underperformed way too much

Insiders contacting me telling me that has sold under 1.5 million copies in over two months of launch time out of the expected 10 million sales in the first three months.

-Insider

If this is true, then BioWare was expecting the game to sell 10 million copies in its first three months, which shows how badly it has underperformed. BioWare seems to have set its expectations way too high, as the game didn’t even manage to meet 20% of the sales target. This explains why the developer didn’t want to give an update on the sales figure.

The Recent Dragon Age Title Has Faced A Lot of Hate Due To Featuring DEI Elements

A major poll previously revealed that over 90% of the players weren’t happy with the game. Following that, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was discounted by 30% on various platforms.

The studio is well aware of the title’s failure, as its director just recently blamed the hate campaign for Veilguard’s failure. This further backs up the insider’s claim

It should also be noted that Sylvia Feketekuty, a veteran employee who has been working with BioWare for over 15 years, has also left, along with some other big names.
