Architectural Differences

1. Process Nodes: The Blackwell-based RTX 5070 and the RTX 4080 Super use TSMC’s 5nm process node. 
2. Clock Speeds: The RTX 5070 has a base clock speed of 2325 MHz that can be overclocked to a boost speed of 2512 MHz. Whereas the RTX 4080 Super’s base and boost clock speeds are 2295 MHz and 2550 MHz, respectively. 
3. VRAM: The new RTX 5070 comes with 12 GB of GDDR7 memory, whereas the RTX 4080 Super has a higher VRAM of 16GB but of the GDDR6X type. The former has a 192-bit bus width, while the latter uses a 256-bit.
4. TDP: With a TDP rating of 250W, the RTX 5070 tends to consume less power. In contrast, the RTX 4080 Super comes with a higher TDP rating of 320W. 
5. Supported Technologies: The RTX 5070 utilizes Nvidia’s new DLSS 4 that features multi-frame generation for image and frame upscaling. Whereas the RTX 4080 Super uses DLSS 3, which isn’t an advanced.

Gaming Benchmarks – 1440p

With the specifications out of the way, let’s see the real-world performance of these two GPUs. Testing these cards on 1440p with the highest settings will determine if they live up to their specifications or not. The test bench has been kept the same for both cards for accurate differences.

Marvel Rivals

• On Marvel Rivals, the RTX 4080 Super outperformed the RTX 5070 by 19.7% as it obtained an average of 95 FPS. On the other hand, the RTX 5070 performed with an average of 78 FPS.  
• As far as the 1% lows are concerned, the RTX 4080 Super hit exactly 60 FPS on average. Whereas the RTX 5070’s frames dropped to an average of 52 FPS, making it 14.3% behind its rival.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

• In this next game, we saw that the RTX 4080 Super pushed with its average of 69 FPS, 28.1% ahead of the RTX 5070, which marched below the 60 FPS mark by averaging 52 FPS.  
• In terms of the 1% lows, the RTX 4080 Super couldn’t reach 60 FPS, and its frames dipped to 57 FPS, on average. On the contrary, the RTX 5070 was 35.1% behind, with its average of 40 FPS. 

Cyberpunk 2077

• On Cyberpunk 2077, the RTX 4080 Super performed quite well and was 31% more advantageous. Both the RTX 4080 Super and the RTX 5070 achieved an average of 134 FPS and 98 FPS, respectively.  
• We saw the highest margin in terms of the 1% lows, where the RTX 4080 Super outperformed the RTX 5070 by a whopping 37.9% difference. The former averaged 116 FPS while the latter obtained 79 FPS, on average. 

Hogwarts Legacy

• Here, we noticed that the RTX 4080 Super averaged 129 FPS and showcased only an 8.1% margin, which is the least out of all games. The RTX 5070, on the other hand, performed with 119 FPS. 
• As for the 1% lows, the RTX 4080 Super performed with an average of 72 FPS whereas the RTX 5070 operated at minimum with 66 FPS, on average. This makes for an 8.7% performance difference. 

The Last Of Us Part 1

• On The Last Of Us Part 1, we saw that the RTX 4080 Super pushed back with its average of 124 FPS and this time had a 31.8% edge over the RTX 5070, which obtained an average of 90 FPS. 
• Regarding the 1% lows, the RTX 4080 Super had a 33.3% leverage over the RTX 5070 as both the graphic cards obtained an average of 112 FPS and 80 FPS, respectively. 

Starfield 

• With an average of 89 FPS, the RTX 4080 Super was 26.8% ahead of the RTX 5070, which obtained an average of 68 FPS in Starfield.  
• While the RTX 5070’s lowest framerates reached 58 FPS, the RTX 4080 Super was the stronger contender as it obtained an average of 77 FPS. This makes the RTX 4080 Super 28.1% better.

Metro Exodus (Ray-tracing)

• With ray-tracing on Metro Exodus, the RTX 4080 Super averaged with 140 FPS and showcased its ray-tracing potential by being 31.4% ahead of the RTX 5070, which obtained an average of 102 FPS.  
• With a 30.5% margin, the RTX 4080 Super’s frames reached 121 FPS which were higher than the RTX 5070’s 89 FPS.

Cyberpunk 2077 (Ray-Tracing)

• In this demanding ray-tracing game, the RTX 4080 Super excelled with the highest margin of 43.2%, with an average of 90 FPS. Simultaneously, the RTX 5070 performed with 58 FPS.  
• The 1% lows were also quite good on the RTX 4080 Super as it averaged 70 FPS. Whereas the RTX 5070 operated with an average of 48 FPS in this game, being 37.3% behind its rival. 

Productivity Benchmarks

This section is highly important to most users, who, unlike pure gamers, use other aspects of their graphics card to work with productivity software. Here is how these cards performed in three productivity software programs. 

3DMark Time Spy Graphics

• On 3DMark Time Spy Graphics test, the RTX 4080 Super shined because it scored 28,344 points compared to the RTX 5070’s 22,096 points. This makes the RTX 4080 Super 24.8% better in this regard.

LuxMark Sala GPU Test

• Testing the cards in LuxMark Sala, the RTX 4080 Super won again with its 23,440 points. The RTX 5070 was 13.4% behind with its score of 20,500 points. 

ComputeMark Result

• The RTX 4080 Super was also ahead in the ComputeMark test, but this time it had a whopping 35.7% edge over the RTX 5070 as both GPUs scored 65,879 and 45,944 points, respectively.  

Overall Gaming Performance

Average Framerate

From the eight tested games, we saw that the RTX 4080 Super was the top performer. As per our calculations, the RTX 4080 Super is precisely 26.7% better than the RTX 5070 in terms of 1440p gaming. Apart from Hogwarts Legacy, the RTX 5070 was behind in all games.  

1% Lows

As for the 1% lows, the RTX 4080 Super displayed 28.9% better performance than the RTX 5070. The RTX 4080 Super operated with smoother frames as its lowest FPS were higher than that on the RTX 5070.   

Productivity

Regarding productivity, the RTX 4080 Super was the winner and it showed a slight increase in performance when compared to the gaming averages. From what we calculated, the RTX 4080 Super performed 28.2% better than the RTX 5070 in all of the productivity software.  

Power Consumption

In terms of the power consumption, the RTX 5070 was 27.5% more power-efficient than the RTX 4080 Super. With ray tracing enabled, the RTX 5070 showcased a 13.2% lead over its rival. However, this is a given as the RTX 5070 has a lower TDP rating compared to the RTX 4080 Super. 

Price And Availability

Since the RTX 5070 has just been released, many online retailers haven’t set its price, and it is mostly being sold for its MSRP. This makes the RTX 5070 122.9% cheaper than the RTX 4080 Super. But don’t get excited just yet because the RTX 5070’s price will surely rise and could become unreasonable at some point.  

Final Verdict—What We Recommend?

RTX 4080 Super: This card is excellent and does a commendable job, whether it is in gaming or productivity. But we think its price is still high. In a year, its price has skyrocketed even more than its direct equivalent, the RX 7900 XTX, which shares almost the same raw performance. 

RTX 5070: This card isn’t bad per se, but its future price could be either a deal-breaker or a deal-maker. The RTX 5070’s performance is very similar to that of the RTX 4070 Super. But if the former’s price exceeds the latter, it won’t be of any value, and then the RTX 4070 Super would become a better option.

When comparing the RTX 5070 with the RTX 4080 Super, the RTX 5070 appears to be a more budget-friendly option. If its price doesn’t hike too much, we recommend it for people with budget constraints. The RTX 4080 Super is a better option for people who want higher performance, especially with ray-tracing enabled.
