RTX 3060 Ti Background

NVIDIA’s high-end gaming graphics card list cannot be completed without the mention of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, at least for now. Launched in December 2022 at a price of $399, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is a true gaming beast with high core clock speeds, along with DLSS and raytracing technology.

Other Comparisons: RTX 2060 vs RTX 3060

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is built on the Ampere architecture with its 8nm process allowing it to hold 17,400 million transistors within an area of 392 mm². It was marketed with its 8 GB VRAM and GDDR6 memory type along with a memory bus of 256 bits.

Talking about clock speeds, with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti having a base clock of 1410 MHz which can be boosted up to 1665 MHz, it is packing enough performance in its individual cores.

Regarding gaming, it has the complete support of DirectX 12 Ultimate making it able to run all modern games as well as future upcoming ones. It also has support for other graphics features such as OpenGL 4.6, Vulkan 1.3, and CUDA 8.6.

Moreover, the rendering capabilities of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti include 4864 shading units, 80 ROPs, 152 texture mapping units, as well an additional 152 Tensor Cores for improved artificial learning applications. It also has 128 KB L1 Cache, along with 4 MB worth of L2 Cache.

Lastly, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has an official maximum TDP rating of 200 W. It is also a dual-slot card which means it uses a 12-pin power connector to draw power from the PSU and is connected to the motherboard with the PCIe 4.0 x16 port. It also contains all modern display ports such as HDMI and DisplayPort.

RTX 2070 Super Background

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super will soon be two generations old as the new GeForce 40 series arrives, but that’s not to say it is outdated for modern games. In fact, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super is an extremely powerful GPU that will hold up for a long time at least for gaming at 1080p. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super, which went on sale in July 2019 for $499, is a powerful gaming GPU with high core clock speeds with the latest NVIDIA technology.

Speaking of clock rates, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super has a base clock of 1605 MHz and can be cranked up to 1770 MHz, so it has plenty of processing power.

Built with the Turing architecture, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super can fit 13,600 million transistors in a 545 mm² space thanks to its 12nm manufacturing process. It was advertised with 8 GB of VRAM, GDDR6 memory, and a 256-bit memory bus.

In terms of gaming, it is capable of running all current games as well as those that will be released in the future thanks to DirectX 12 Ultimate’s full support. Additionally, it supports additional graphics features like CUDA 7.5, OpenGL 4.6, and Vulkan 1.3.

Further, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super’s rendering capabilities include 2560 shading units, 64 ROPs, 160 texture mapping units, and an extra 320 Tensor Cores for better performance in artificial intelligence applications. In addition, it includes 4 MB of L2 Cache and 64 KB of L1 Cache.

Last but not least, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super features a 215 W official maximum TDP rating. It is also a dual-slot card, which means it connects to the motherboard through a PCIe 3.0 x16 connection and draws power from the PSU via both an 8-pin and a 6-pin power connector. Additionally, it has every contemporary display port, including HDMI, USB Type C, and DisplayPort.

Differences in Specification

When looking at the specifications of both GPUs, we can say that they’re very similar with regard to memory. They are, however, built on different architectures, and have different core clock speeds.

While the older 12nm Turing architecture was used in the making of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is built on the faster 8nm Ampere architecture. The RTX 2070 being a larger chip at 545 mm², is able to fit in 13,600 million transistors but is still surpassed by RTX 3060 Ti’s 17,400 million transistors based on a 392 mm² chip.

Both the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super are marketed with 8 GB worth of GDDR6 VRAM. Alongside that, the memory bus is 256-bit which is identical for both graphics cards.

While the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has a base and boost clock of 1410 MHz and 1665 MHz respectively, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super is running on 1605 MHz for the base clock, and 1770 MHz, for the boost core clock speeds.

Comparing the shading units, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super has 2560 shaders, 160 TMUs, and 64 ROPs, along with 320 tensor cores as opposed to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which has 4864 shaders, 152 TMUs, and 80 ROPs, as well as 152 tensor cores.

Lastly, the TDP is rated 200 W and 215 W for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super respectively. That should have covered most of the differences and similarities in the specifications of both GPUs. With that said, let’s get into the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super comparison.

Ti vs Super: What’s the difference?

Essentially, NVIDIA’s Ti and Super labels are both improved versions of a standard graphics card that have better performance and higher core clock speeds than the original.

Ti in NVIDIA graphics cards stands for Titanium and is the most powerful variant of the original graphics card. The performance increase could be anywhere from 30%-40% compared to the original. This makes them come at a higher price so it’s important to check how much performance increase you’re getting compared to the money being spent when buying the original or Ti version.

Super is basically the version that’s between the standard and Ti version. This means the performance difference is between 20%-30% compared to the standard graphics card. The same advice applies here when choosing between the Super, Ti, and standard versions. Out of the three, the Ti version will be the most powerful and also cost more than the others.

Final Thoughts – Which One To Get?

To wrap up this NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super comparison, let’s review what we know about both GPUs. We already know that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is the better card with regards to the generation and architecture that it’s built on. Although, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super have the same memory specifications with both cards having 8GB GDDR6 VRAM running on the 256-bit memory bus.

From the 1080p benchmarks, we can see the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti beat the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super by a 9% FPS difference. Similar results were obtained from the 1440p and 4K benchmarks. The games were all tested on the highest settings that the engines could provide. Nevertheless, both GPUs offer solid performance for high-end gaming.

So in the end, there’s not really a huge amount of difference in performance when it comes to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super. Both graphics cards have near identical performance but the NVIDIA GeForce 3060 Ti is just a little bit better.

It’s really not worth upgrading from the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super to the NVIDIA GeForce 3060 Ti to get a 9% FPS boost which is essentially just a couple of frames. When it comes to choosing which one to buy, just buy whichever one you can find cheaper unless you really want those few extra frames.
