Black Myth: Wukong Being A Boss Rush Game Is A Plus Point For Me

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong has a lot of bosses while being linear in nature.
  • This basically makes it a boss rush game, which some people are not fond of.
  • However, I have found this approach interesting and a plus point since the game is full of non-stop action.

Black Myth: Wukong has exceeded everyone’s expectations on release. Even I was surprised to see it crossing 2 million concurrent players, breaking Steam records, and selling 10 million copies in three days.

The game has also been solid overall. While there were some concerns about the action RPG’s linear nature, my experience has been very different. In my opinion, the boss-rush approach works quite well.

Since the bosses are so well made, the fact that Game Science has basically made a boss rush experience is more of a plus point.

Why it matters: Black Myth: Wukong features nearly 100 bosses and linear levels. This approach is very different from most games, but it works surprisingly well here.

Non-Stop Action

The combat system is top-tier, and I mean it. You get a skill tree and very few points at the beginning. This tests your intuition and past gaming knowledge. So, adding points to the ideal stats would make the game easier for you.

Adding more points in health and stamina is a good choice, but you can also go for a glass canon build. There are a few stances as well, which make the experience even better. Because the combat is great, using everything in your arsenal and beating the bosses can be a lot of fun.

Of course, it might get a little boring if you prefer exploration over fighting bosses. However, the bosses aren’t that hard, so you don’t have to worry about the difficulty either.

I am well aware some bosses can take a lot of time to beat. Still, the challenge pales in comparison to the difficulty of FromSoftware games. This is why I don’t mind the boss-rush approach.

You can have a blast with the combat and experiment with different strategies due to the sheer number of bosses in the game.

The Bosses Are Fun To Fight

Black-Myth-Wukong-Promising
Most Bosses Are Well-Designed And Memorable

I have played the game for well over 20 hours, and so far, most of the bosses have been fun to fight. Some bosses in the game are surely annoying, and Non-able is one such example.

Ignoring the few annoying outliers, Black Myth: Wukong’s enemies are a joy to face. Sure, some battles are harder than others, and I’ve seen many players complaining about Wandering Wight, but most fights are fairly easy.

What I liked the most about the bosses was just how different each one could be. At one point, I was fighting a nimble flying dragon, while at another point, I found myself facing a massive beetle alongside a giant rat companion, making for a thrilling boss battle.

Despite the sheer quantity of boss battles, Game Science rarely sacrifices the quality. Each major enemy looks unique and brings new moves to the table. Because the game does not have much downtime between each major encounter, I was able to appreciate these qualities more than I would have otherwise.

So Many Secret Bosses

Black Myth: Wukong
There Are Numerous Secrets To Find In Black Myth: Wukong| Image via Tech4Gamers

While Black Myth: Wukong is inherently linear in nature, it has a plethora of secrets to explore. The secret fights surprised me a lot since the developers have managed to pack in so much content, with boss fights showing up when you least expect them.

The first major secret boss you can find in chapter one is actually an amazing find. Ringing three bells will take you to a different place with a lot of chests as a reward. Right ahead, Elder Jinchi will be waiting for you.

However, if you didn’t have a good time with the Wandering Wight boss fight, then you are in for more bullying. There is another major hidden boss that can’t be unlocked until you get a certain item from Chapter 2.

Moreover, the secret boss fights are just as great as the main encounters, and I recommend everyone try to find as many of them as possible.

Perhaps the open-world fatigue has finally kicked in for me, but it was genuinely refreshing to play Black Myth: Wukong. The boss-rush concept works incredibly well here, and the fact that there is little padding between each encounter keeps the experience going at a brisk pace.

I can’t wait to see where Game Science goes from here. If the team makes another entry for this series in the future, I hope to see it flesh out the boss rush gameplay further.

Stellar Blade Sequel To Use Unreal Engine 5, Suggests Job Listing

Story Highlight
  • Stellar Blade is among the most popular releases of this year.
  • A recent job listing we spotted suggests that the developers are planning to move to Epic’s latest engine for the sequel.
  • The team is looking for someone who has experience with Unreal Engine 5 and wants to work on AAA projects for this series.

Stellar Blade was one of the most massive releases of the year and the biggest for Shift Up. The developers are currently working on the PC version of the title as they believe the PC release will be much bigger than the PS5.

Moreover, the developers previously confirmed plans for a sequel. We have also spotted a job listing for the 3D Background Modeler, suggesting that the team will use Unreal Engine 5 for Stellar Blade 2.

Why it matters: Unreal Engine 5 is Epic’s latest engine, and titles like Hellblade 2 prove it is currently the best in the market when it comes to breathtaking visuals.

Shift Up has various job listings up for the Stellar Blade IP, confirming that the team is working on projects for the future. According to the 3D Background Modeler listing, the team wants to hire developers who have experience with Unreal Engine 5.

 Experience using Unreal Engine 5

-Shift Up Job Listing

Since this statement is found in the preferred section, it seems all but certain that this engine will be used for the sequel.

Moreover, the requirement asks for experience developing AAA console games, suggesting that this is a completely new project as opposed to more content for the first Stellar Blade.

The original game sold a million units in just two months. It also relied on Unreal Engine 4, so the team’s decision to use Unreal Engine 5 seems like a natural progression.

Stellar Blade
Stellar Blade Is The Most Profitable Release For Shift Up

Recently, it was noted that the studio recently hired more developers for the sequel.

While a potential sequel sounds exciting, Shift Up is currently focusing on the PC port. Moreover, a roadmap is already available for those who wish to see the studio’s short-term plans.

Nonetheless, the switch to Unreal Engine 5 should prove beneficial for the series in the long run. The first entry has already garnered praise for its polish and visuals, so a switch to the latest technology should allow Shift Up to further capitalize on these strengths.

Bandai Namco Says Audiences Want More Diversity & Inclusivity In Games

Story Highlight
  • Bandai Namco has published some of the biggest franchises in the industry.
  • The publisher has recently started to focus on diversity and inclusivity, citing player interest and demand as motivations for this push.
  • The publisher says it has become necessary to focus on DEI to reach a wider audience.

Bandai Namco is one of the oldest and biggest publishers in the gaming industry. Its franchises, Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and many others, have been critically acclaimed around the globe and have garnered a huge fanbase.

Bandai Namco is also huge in the West. The company has recently started focusing on diversity and inclusivity elements, stating that this is something Western audiences want more of.

Why it matters: Diversity and inclusivity are hot topics in the industry amid the growing influence of companies like Sweet Baby Inc. Black Myth: Wukong has even received criticism for its lack of diversity.

During a recent interview with 4gamer.net, Okuma Miraif from the Quality Assurance Department of the Bandai Namco Online Business Division discussed the insights she learned about DEI.

When asked why the company has placed importance on DEI, Okuma replied that the company has understood that this focus is necessary to reach a wide range of players around the globe.

Bandai Namco has recently started developing titles under the slogan “from Japan to the world,” starting with the development of Blue Protocol and Gundam Evolution. Okuma further explains why diversity, equity, and inclusion are important in reaching a Western audience.

Creating a situation in which diverse personalities are respected, and abilities can be demonstrated under fair environments and conditions.

Apart From Bandai Namco, Capcom Is Interested In More Diversity

It has also been stated that the public opinion of DEI has been growing over the recent years since movements like BLM became popular. Bandai Namco claims that people are expecting to find these elements in the entertainment industry apart from real life.

What’s more encouraging is the fact that Bandai Namco realizes the need to balance these elements. Leaning too far in certain directions is almost always a disastrous recipe, so the publisher might be making a wiser decision here.

Star Wars Outlaws Drops As Low As 720p For 60FPS On PS5 and Series X

Story Highlight
  • Star Wars Outlaws fails to hold a steady 60FPS in its performance mode.
  • This mode also runs at a dynamic resolution, with the target falling as low as 720p.
  • The quality mode runs much better, though it can drop as low as 1134p.

Star Wars Outlaws is right around the corner, and recent coverage has revealed a lot about the game. Following the reviews and testing of the PC version, Ubisoft has also launched the title in early access.

On PC, the game can take up as much as 21GB of VRAM. Elsewhere, console testing reveals that significant cuts to resolution are required for the 60FPS target in performance mode.

According to a report, the game drops to 720p when running at 60FPS on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Why it matters: The latest consoles promised 4K gaming, so it’s quite disappointing to see such massive resolution cuts for current-gen-only titles so early on in the current generation’s lifespan.

Star Wars Outlaws is made with the Snowdrop engine, and Digital Foundry has praised many aspects of the title.

Massive Entertainment seems to have done a solid job with the lighting, interiors, and many other parts of the game. However, these positives don’t come without their caveats.

According to the analysts, the 60FPS mode on both consoles is inconsistent. Drops below 60FPS are frequent, even with the render resolution range falling between 720p and 1080p.

Looking at the resolutions of the other graphics modes, the 40FPS mode seems to strike the best balance between performance and image quality. It runs between 936p and 1252p and maintains the target frame rate much better.

Elsewhere, the 30FPS mode ranges from 1134p to 1620p. Interestingly, Massive Entertainment skips most of these options for the Xbox Series S, offering a fixed 30FPS experience.

Star Wars Outlaws VRAM Consumption At 4K Resolution On PC

It is also important to note that performance mode involves big trade-offs, such as limited foliage density, worse draw distances, and lower-quality reflections.

Because the PS5 is limited to such a low resolution when running the game at 60FPS, it will be interesting to see how the PS5 Pro eventually handles the game. Hopefully, the developers will go back and offer updates to utilize the additional hardware capabilities of Sony’s upgraded console.

Konami Says It Will Soon Find Kojima’s Replacement For Metal Gear Solid

Story Highlight
  • The Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake is quite faithful and looks promising.
  • The developer has revealed that no one at Konami has been able to replace Hideo Kojima.
  • However, Konami believes it has a talented team with many people who can eventually succeed Hideo Kojima.

Hideo Kojima is known as a legend in the gaming industry. Following his contributions to the stealth action genre with Metal Gear Solid, the director immediately became one of the most influential people in gaming history.

The director brought this franchise to life at Konami but has now moved on to new projects, including Death Stranding 2. Konami regrets the falling out with Hideo Kojima, and the team also says that nobody has been able to replace the director.

However, the publisher confirms that it has a talented team with many people who may be qualified to take up this role later on.

Why it matters: The Metal Gear Solid series was known because of Hideo Kojima’s unique approach, so it will be interesting to see how Konami moves forward without him.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Has Shown A Lot of Promise Lately

RockPaperShotgun recently spoke with Konami’s producer, Noriaki Okamura. The media outlet asked Konami who could finally replace Hideo Kojima and put the developer in the right direction for the Metal Gear Solid IP.

Okamura said that no one has been able to replace Hideo Kojima yet. This is not surprising at all, given the director’s unique approach. However, the publisher has created a new team full of young creative minds

We’ve created this new Metal Gear Solid team. Within this team, there are many that we think could create new ideas.

-Noriaki Okamura

According to Okamura, a very talented team is working on the upcoming game. The producer’s words seem to be accurate since the recent previews are mostly positive. The remake also shows massive visual upgrades in comparison.

Okamura implies that Konami could find Hideo Kojima’s eventual replacement in this team. This also means the publisher could continue the series without this director instead of relying on remakes.

Still, Konami has a lot of respect for the man who helped bring Metal Gear Solid to the forefront of the industry. As far as the current remake, this project is described as a nearly one-to-one recreation.

Konami will likely offer its own spin on the series with future entries since rumors have even pointed to a sixth mainline entry. Also, it will likely release more remakes if the Metal Gear Solid 3 re-release ends up being a major hit with the fans.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Needs A PC For 60FPS Gameplay

Story Highlights
  • Konami has revealed that Metal Gear Solid 3 won’t come with a dedicated 60FPS mode on consoles.
  • Instead, it will feature a 4K 30FPS mode along with a separate option that offers an unlocked frame rate at 1080p.
  • The publisher’s statement implies that this mode will not consistently reach 60FPS, making PC the only viable platform for this target.

Konami seems to have confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will skip the dedicated 60FPS mode. However, while upcoming releases like Avowed will still be locked at 30FPS, that won’t be the case with Konami’s remake.

Why it matters: 60FPS has become a standard for most gamers. The smoother refresh rate provides a much more responsive gaming experience, something every game should have in 2024.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will offer two graphical modes.

Despite not explicitly having a 60FPS dedicated mode, Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will feature two modes: a fidelity and a performance mode. The fidelity mode will run at 4K 30FPS, likely using upscaling.

The fidelity mode is more interesting as it offers a 1080p and higher frame rate experience. Konami hasn’t said much about this mode, but it seems to come with unlocked frame rates.

Since the publisher has explicitly avoided the 60FPS term, consoles are unlikely to hit this target. The remake will use Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to struggle with performance like most games on this engine, especially those using Nanite and Lumen.

For context, Hellblade 2 also lacks a 60FPS mode on consoles. Anyhow, this would mean that PC will be the only platform with proper 60FPS gameplay for Konami’s remake.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
The remake is very faithful to the original game.

This also raises the question of whether more future games won’t feature 60FPS options. This could be a trend moving forward, and companies might allow a smoother refresh rate only on the upper-tier consoles from now, like the upcoming PS5 Pro.

Still, despite not having the dedicated 60FPS, it is good to find out that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake at least allows an unlocked frame rate. Konami also recently invited a limited audience to experience the game, indicating a very faithful rendition of the classic.

Why The Uncharted Movie Failed To Deliver?

Story Highlights
  • The Uncharted movie failed to deliver because it couldn’t match the vibe of the games.
  • The bad casting and lack of emotional touch also lead to disaster.
  • Moreover, video game movies, in general, are a bad idea due to the run time of the movies, which is another reason why the movie couldn’t succeed as much as the games.

Naughty Dog introduced the Uncharted franchise in 2007. The first game was claimed to be a rip-off of the Tomb Raider franchise. However, the game was successful and proved that it was influenced by Tomb Raider at best and had many unique elements.

The franchise continued its journey of success, and here we are discussing the Uncharted movie. There are plenty of reasons why the Uncharted movie didn’t succeed as much as the games.

The Vibe Of The Movie Didn’t Match The Games

The movie does well as an action-adventure movie but isn’t a good uncharted movie. From the start, the vibe of the movie felt so off. The build-up to the characters didn’t leave a good impression.

The flashback scenes of Nathan’s childhood were the only thing that added something to the character development. The adult version of Nathan just felt like a regular guy with some athleticism.

Tom Holland Playing Nathan Drake
Tom Holland As Nathan Drake (Image By Forbes)

The personality that Tom Holland portrayed needed more work to be accurate to the original Nate’s. Nate’s passion for treasure hunting and willingness to take risks and cross the line in tough situations felt missing from this version of him.

Bad Casting

One of the reasons behind this can be the inaccurate casting. Choosing Tom Holland to play a young Nathan Drake wasn’t a terrible decision, but it also was a good one, as the actor couldn’t deliver the exact vibe.

Moreover, some good acting could have improved things, but we also didn’t see much effort from Tom. But no matter how bad of a decision casting Tom Holland for the role of Nathan Drake can be, it can’t be worse than the director’s decision when casting Mark Wahlberg as Sully. I mean, look at the guy. Does he look anything similar to the Sully we saw in Uncharted games?

Sully was nowhere near as young as Wahlberg is in the movie, at least not when Nathan was an adult. Moreover, Sully’s personality was also way off compared to the game version of him.

Mark Wahlberg Playing Sully In Uncharted

I understand the director tried to use a different approach to the characters and decrease their age difference, but this approach ruined things instead of providing fresh air. One of the reasons why the chemistry between Nate and Slikableso is likable is the age difference.

The Movie Ruined The Relationship Between Sully And Nate

In the games’ story, Sully meets Nathan, a young boy eager to hunt and steal antique ornaments. The two don’t get along at first, but they become more than just friends as time passes.

Sully was a father figure to Nate. The age difference between Nate and Sully has decreased considerably in the movie’s side of the franchise; we will never get to witness their bond as it was portrayed in the games. Fans of the franchise would know how big of a deal it is, and we also saw it negatively affect the movie.

Nathan And Sully In Uncharted 3

Not Enough Run Time

Another factor that negatively affected the game was the lower run time. Video games are 10-12; compressing that lengthy content into a small size isn’t always a good idea.

Yes, the movie had its own story and wasn’t entirely based on the story from one of the Uncharted games, but as someone used to 12-hour-long Uncharted campaigns, I felt that the movie felt rushed. The story barely got any time to develop itself.

The characters were already less recognizable in terms of personality than the original ones, and the bad character development due to less screen time made me care even less about them. Most of the movie is filled with action scenes, and that’s the only good thing about the movie.

How The Uncharted Games Are Different Than The Movie

The Uncharted games are mostly full of action sequences and are the franchise’s highlights. But that’s not everything they offer. They also have interesting, likable characters, wholesome moments, emotional touches, and much more attached to them, which I couldn’t find in the movie.

These details make the Uncharted Games better than the movie. I hope they redeem themselves with the sequel by developing Sam Drake’s character, Nathan’s brother, better than the first movie.

Why Palworld Is Not a Rip-off of the Pokémon Series

Story Highlights
  • Palworld blends creature collecting and other genres such as third person shooter and survival.
  • The game makes use of darker themes as opposed to Pokémon such as using pals for labor and combat.
  • Players can use firearms and other weapons in fights unlike in Pokémon.

In the genre of creature collecting games, very few have left a mark as Pokémon. Pokémon became such a big thing that when Palworld was announced people labeled it as a mere Pokémon clone.

However, despite the accusations on a deeper look Palworld is much different. The game offers features and experiences that distinguish itself significantly from its predecessor and is available on Steam.

A Unique Blend of Genres Unlike Pokémon

One of the major differences between the games is the blend of genres in Palworld. Pokémon is primarily a turn-based RPG focused on collecting and battling creatures. Palworld on the other hand uses elements of survival games, crafting and even third person shooting.

Palworld Xbox Series X

In the game players can equip weapons to fight pals and other players which is not seen in Pokémon. This genre fusion sets the game apart from Pokémon allowing it to appeal to a bigger audience.

Dark and Mature Themes

Another reason why Palworld is not a rip-off of Pokemon is that it dives into themes that Pokémon typically avoids. The game provides a world where players can exploit their Pals.

You can make your pals do factory work and such introducing a darker and more dystopian element to the game. While this may not appeal to most players, it adds a layer of depth and complexity that Pokémon games lack.

In an interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, McGowan Pokémon’s Ex lawyer referred to Palworld as “the usual ripoff nonsense.” Furthermore, he implied that he was surprised that the game made it this far.

This, however, is not true as the game allows for players to be trainers, builders, explorers, and combatants at the same time leading Palworld to become a major success at release with 370K players.

Open World Exploration

Palworld offers a more open-world experience compared to the structured, region-based exploration of Pokémon. In the game players can explore different biomes, each with its own unique challenges and creatures.

Palworld On Xbox Series X

This open world approach encourages exploration and discovery, providing a sense of freedom and immersion for players. Players can venture into the open world and can uncover hidden secrets.

Cooperative and Competitive Multiplayer

Pokémon has ventured into multiplayer with trading and battling but Palworld takes it a step further by using cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. Players can team up with friends to explore the world and tackle challenges.

Furthermore, players can also engage in battles against each other. This aspect significantly increases the replayability of the game and offers a range of different interactions that differ from the single player focus of Pokémon.

PalworldPalworld
Palworld Multiplayer – Image Credits (Pinterest)

One additional thing that puts Palworld ahead of Pokémon and not a rip-off is that it is available on different platforms. The success of Palworld show that Pokémon should go multi-platform.

Advanced Crafting and Building Systems

Palworld is not a rip-off because crafting and building are integral parts of Palworlds gameplay which are not in Pokémon. Players of the game can construct factories, shelters and other structures to aid in their survival and progression in the game.

The focus on crafting and building in the game adds a layer of strategy and creativity. This gives players more control over their environment and resources.

Recent Updates

The player counts for Palworld were already very high but after a recent update the player count has increased 700%. A new island was introduced called Sakurajima which comes with new pals, enemies and items.

Updates such as this continue to peak the interest of gamers ana fans alike. Recently Palworld has beat the famous game Counterstrike with around 1.86 million concurrent players and is rising to greater heights.

Final Thoughts

Undoubtedly, Palworld takes inspiration from the Pokemon series, but it manages to differentiate itself. Using a blend of genres, darker more mature themes and open world exploration set it apart from other similar games including Pokémon.

The game is not just a mere clone of Pokémon, not in the slightest, it continues to expand the boundaries of what creature collecting games can be. Regardless, Palworld offers a unique experience similar to everyone’s favorite Pokémon but yet so much different.

XDefiant: Ubisoft Merged Its Game’s Elements To Form One Game

Story Highlights
  • The concept of merging elements from its other games is excellent as it creates a sense of familiarity, drawing players in.
  • Ubisoft has used characters and maps from games like Splinter Cell, The Division, Ghost Recon, and Far Cry.
  • They’ve also used the destructible environment from Rainbow Six and the fast-paced inspired by the Call Of Duty series.

While games focus on creating standalone games with their own identity, even if they’re action-packed PvP like XDefiant, however, Ubisoft didn’t shy away from breaking the norms and combined all of its other games’ elements to form an excellent game.

Ubisoft Is A Genius

Ubisoft has created an ultimate game by using parts of its other games. This has created a sense of familiarity, and the game doesn’t feel like another branch of Ubisoft. Instead, it feels like you’ve been playing this game for years.

This concept is both refreshing and entertaining.  We’ve seen other games like Jump Force and Super Smash Bro Ultimate, where there are so many characters used from various games and animes.

These games do well because they appeal to and attract a wider audience.

Faction Based On Popular Franchise

Coming back to XDefiant, we see that it is bombarded with items used in Ubisoft’s other games. Starting from the factions, we get all the agents from each of Ubisoft’s games.

Phantom

They are based on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and focus on advanced military technology. They are equipped Meg barrier where they place a shield and they can shoot without getting shot at by the enemies.

Their second ability is the Blitz shield where they can use a huge shield as a boulder to sweep the enemies away. Their ultra ability allows them to shoot electro-scatterguns with the protection of a huge shield around them.

Echelon

They are based on Tom Clancy’s infamous Splinter Cell series, these agents are none other than the spies of the team. One of their ability gathers intel and spots the enemies on their map for a brief moment.

 XDefiant
Echelon (Tech4Gamers)

The second ability that they have is a ghillie suit which makes them partially invisible so they can be discrete in their approach. Their ultra ability initiates their sonar goggles and grants them Sam Fisher’s 5.7 pistol used in the Splinter Cell game.

Cleaners

Based on Tom Clancy’s The Division, these agents are equipped with the ability to throw a Molotov to cause damage to a radical. All of their bullets also inflict extra burn damage. Their second ability is a drone that burns everything in the path it’s thrown towards.

Their ultimate ability lets them equip a huge flamethrower which they can use to burn their enemies swiftly.

Other Similarities

Maps From Ubisoft Universe

  • Liberty & Midtown: This map is based on the post-pandemic New York City, inspired by Tom Clancy’s The Division.
  • Echelon HQ & Attica Heights: These maps are inspired by the Splinter Cell.
  • Shooter House & Emporium: These are based on and influenced by the places from the Far Cry Series.

Map Design & Environment

Similar to the atmosphere and settings used in other Ubisoft titles, XDefiant also utilizes a mix of open spaces, tight corridors, and interactive environments. It also uses elements from Rainbow Six by including destructible environments.

Fast-Paced Multiplayer

The first-person action-packed and fast-paced gameplay appears to be inspired by Call Of Duty’s addictive multiplayer mode. The swift movements and fluid gunplay are also inspired by the COD franchise.

Despite the closer resemblance to COD, some even speculate that Ubisoft might become Call Of Duty’s competition with the extremely fast-paced gameplay. It is one of the games you pick and enjoy with quick and shorter rounds but with intense gaming sessions.

Free-To-Play

Apart from using so many elements of its other games, Ubisoft thankfully didn’t take the biggest element that they keep in all of their games. Fortunately, they’ve made this game free-to-play and this is one of the reasons why it had the biggest Ubisoft launch in history.

Resemblance From Other Game?

Apart from Ubisoft’s own games, XDefiant is also based on another game that looks and feels the same. It is based on another game called Shatterline. It features the same agent’s abilities, fast-paced FPS action, and even has a similar HUD style.

It’s as if Ubisoft sneakily copied this game, and no one noticed, or nobody cares. Before playing, when I first saw its gameplay, I saw the same red and blue names at the kill feed and thought it was Shatterline.

Despite the similarities, XDefiant is way better, and I’d always choose it over Shatterline or any other game in this category.

Why Games Are Becoming Fun & Playful Instead Of Dark & Gritty

Story Highlights
  • The transition of games from GTA IV to GTA V and Watch Dogs to Watch Dogs 2 are a few examples of this.
  • Using a dark & gritty plot and atmosphere is essential because it adds depth to the game and its characters.
  • Shifting to fun appeals to a younger audience as they are huge customers of the gaming industry.

Dark & gritty games have been missing in the gaming industry. The games that are still present are still appreciated for their serious plot. But why do games do this? Let’s find out.

Common Examples

People often admire the dark and broody atmosphere in games because it represents depression, a catastrophe, or something negative. This effect is the same in games as it is in movies.

However, games are transitioning to fun and vibrant colors with a playful and lighthearted tone instead of a dark and gritty atmosphere with a serious plot. This transition is removing the element of darkness and seriousness from most games, which is creating a void.

GTA IV To GTA V

Some common examples are the transition from GTA IV to GTA V and the upcoming GTA VI. We can clearly see how gritty GTA IV was with its dull, desaturated colors, dark, twisted plot, and serious protagonist.

Compared to GTA V, which uses vibrant colors and depicts a fun, playful, and lighthearted plot most of the time, This seems to be the same case for the upcoming GTA VI, as we can judge from the trailer how colorful and playful the game will be.

Watch Dogs To Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2 are also victims of this transition. Watch Dogs has a pensive and serious protagonist who is in constant pain throughout the game because he has lost his niece, who was killed.

Watch Dogs Gritty
Watch Dogs (Tech4Gamers)

The protagonist has flashbacks at particular locations where the murder of her niece took place. This dark plot is reinforced by the somewhat gritty colors and earthy tones used in the game, which are missing in Watch Dogs 2.

Watch Dogs 2 took a completely different approach. The protagonist is an unsure teen with no spine who uses humor to appeal to a younger audience. The game also added much saturation and color to depict a playful atmosphere.

Watch Dogs 2 Colorful
Watch Dogs 2 (Tech4Gamers)

Compare this to Watch Dogs Legion which lacked proper anotogonist and felt like a clutter which became a reason for the downfall of the franchise.

What Do Fans Prefer?

In the two examples, we still see that Watch Dogs 1 and GTA IV are more appreciated even though they were released 10 and 16 years ago, respectively.

People enjoyed both games’ serious plots and gritty atmospheres, especially GTA IV, because they brought depth to the characters. Yes, the newer releases have perfect physics, graphics, textures, and other things, but they lack grit.

But Why Do Games Do This?

Using dark & gritty colors means there should be elements of darkness involved in the narrative. Most often dark games reveal the truth, which seems to have become a problem in recent times.

Cancel Culture

Cancel or call-out culture began to take its place in the late 2010s, and it was to stop people from going overboard with truth. This movement meant that games that were way too honest were not accepted, and it became stronger as the years passed.

This is why all the older games, such as GTA San Andreas and Bully, had references and jokes that would easily get canceled if released in this period. This is one of the reasons why Bully 2 might be canceled.

Appeal To The Younglings

The gaming industry’s biggest customers are children; to appeal to children, games must be vibrant and playful. This way, the game appears fun to the youth, who buy more of it.

Gamers Distributed By Age
Under 18s Are 2nd Highest Customer

The chart by Exploding Topics reveals that the number of people under 18 is the second highest after teenagers, young adults, and adults. Most people in this age bracket don’t think much before purchasing a game.

Light humor, young protagonists, and a lighthearted plot all appeal to the teens who became frequent customers of these games. Additionally, if all the games appear to have vivid colors, the children will feel familiar, so they’ll buy more of them.

This is why games like Fortnite are common among kids. It has extremely saturated colors, easy-going lore, and action-figure-like characters that click among the children.

Why Does It Suck?

Other than being an insinuation of a dark narrative, a gritty atmosphere also serves as an art style. It sucks because these types of games are missing due to the saturation of vibrant games.

Is It Too Late To Get Into Marvel Snap?

Story Highlights
  • Marvel’s Marvel Snap offers great rewards to players getting into the game for the first time.
  • However, the rewards become stale as you play more until it’s impossible to get the cards you want without paying.
  • Spotlight Caches, Tokens, and other features exist to help, but they’re very inefficient.

I’ve always been a huge TCG enthusiast. My obsession for the longest time had been Legenda of Runeterra, but I thought it was about time I needed a new one after Riot’s statement about no longer focusing on Runeterra’s PvP side of things.

Despite Marvel Snap already being infamous for its Pay-to-Win gameplay and its abysmal card drop rates, I gave it a try. To my surprise, the initial experience was insanely good, and I didn’t feel like the game was nearly as stingy as people thought.

After returning to the game after a break that lasted a few months, I can quite confidently say that yeah, it might be too late to get into Marvel Snap.

Early Days: A Stream of Shiny Rewards

The initial stages of Marvel Snap are undeniably rewarding. The collection system is unlike what I’ve seen in most other games. The game rewards you for getting prismatics by giving you more cards for doing so.

This is because of the Collection system. As you play matches, you get boosters. You can then use these boosters to level up the aesthetics of your cards and gain Collection Points. Reaching certain Collection Point milestones rewards you with various items, including new cards!

From Cards to Clutter

This honeymoon phase, however, abruptly ends around Collection Level 1000. The once-plentiful card pool becomes inundated with “junk” – titles, avatars, and even in-game currency that upgrades your collection (an odd choice, if you ask me).

This dilution becomes a significant hurdle for beginners, especially since these caches include items irrelevant to their early deck-building needs.

The Scarcity Struggle: New Cards vs. Limited Acquisition Methods

Collection Levels are not the only way to get cards, however. The two other main ways of acquiring cards include the Spotlight Cache, a box that contains one of three featured cards, and the shop.

Spotlight Caches offer a glimmer of hope for new card acquisition. However, the system remains heavily reliant on random chance – a mere 1/3 to get a card you’ve saved up months for. This is because to open a Spotlight Cache, you have to get a Spotlight Key.

Another problem with these is that if you missed the Spotlight Cache of a certain card, say goodbye to any chance of fetching them any time soon.

The TCG Curse

Okay, I get that most Trading Card Games have a certain level of luck involved. Magic: The Gathering, the supposed mother of all TCGs, is entirely dependent on your luck at getting certain cards.

However, most other present-day TCGs have other ways of getting cards as well. Runeterra and Hearthstone both let you craft them using in-game currency, whereas Yu-Gi-Oh lets you buy specific cards.

With Marvel Snap, the only way for you to get a card for sure if they’re not on the Spotlight is to pay for it.

The Endgame: Gated by Essential Cards and Missed Opportunities

Certain cards are fundamental for constructing optimal decks. A Destroy deck needs Knull. Collector/Dino/Loki decks hinge on Quinjet. Building any ongoing deck without Mystique is just axing your foot off.

Despite reaching a Collection Level of 2,000, I haven’t had the fortune of getting them– and they’re not even new releases! This lack of access effectively renders any exciting new cards irrelevant.

Breaking the Cycle: A Path to Improvement

Marvel Snap could implement a simple yet effective solution: adjusting the odds within Collector’s Caches. For example, you could have a higher chance of getting cards if your overall card collection is lacking!

This could help players who missed past opportunities while maintaining the incentive to invest in a complete collection.

Is it too late to get into Marvel Snap?

Not necessarily. However, be prepared for a potentially frustrating uphill climb towards a competitive collection, especially if you haven’t been actively playing since launch.

The game’s still insanely fun, but getting a competitive deck might take longer than other card games.

Xbox Series X Often Runs Games Better Than PC, Says Dev

Story Highlight
  • Avowed’s Art Director has stated that the Xbox Series X performance is quite surprising.
  • He states that the team is simultaneously optimizing for PC and both Xbox consoles.
  • The Xbox Series S has proven to be tricky, but the studio is confident in its work.

The Xbox Series X began this generation with the promise of offering Microsoft’s most powerful hardware to date. However, this console has faced its fair share of ups and downs.

Whether it be a handicap due to the Xbox Series S or lack of third-party priority, Microsoft’s premium console has had a difficult time. However, it has also been praised by many developers, one of whom claims that it often outperforms gaming PCs.

Why it matters: PCs outperform consoles most of the time, but this instance highlights the value of consoles coming with a fixed set of hardware. Perhaps this is why Obsidian Entertainment found the console performance to be better.

Speaking to Windows Central, Art Director Matt Hansen discussed the decision to prioritize 30FPS gameplay for Avowed. While the team previously implied that it would skip 60FPS on consoles, the latest interview suggests this decision is still not final.

Speaking about the optimization process, Matt Hensen elaborated on the process of working on optimization for the Xbox Series S|X and PC platforms at the same time. He remarked that this process has led to surprising results.

Early on in development, we realized that often the Xbox Series X performs better than the PC.

The Art Director did not clarify what kind of PC he was referring to, so the statement is a bit vague. Still, it can be seen as a testament to the Xbox Series X’s capabilities as a gaming console.

While this console has been outshined by the PS5, it can certainly hold its own. Games like Alan Wake 2 also show what the Xbox Series X hardware is capable of when put to good use.

Elsewhere, the Art Director noted that Obsidian Entertainment is still figuring out optimization for the Xbox Series S. He pointed out that this budget console lacks the extra bells and whistles of its bigger brother.

Obsidian Entertainment’s struggle with the Xbox Series S is no surprise since similar comments have been made about this console in the past.

Nonetheless, the developer’s claim about the Xbox Series X is certainly an intriguing one. There is no doubt about the hardware’s capability, especially for the $500 budget, but it will be interesting to see if developers hold a similar opinion once the rumored PS5 Pro arrives.
