Is This A Good Time To Purchase Ryzen 5000?

Story Highlight
  • Despite their age, Ryzen 5000 CPUs keep up fairly well in modern titles.
  • The newer 3D-V Cache variants of the Ryzen 5000 CPUs provide a significant performance uplift over the original CPUs, making them viable even in 2024.
  • The AM4 platform has become relatively affordable over the past years, making it suitable for new PC builders working on a tighter budget.
  • If your budget allows, then opting for a 7000-series CPU is still recommended, especially considering the longevity AMD promises out of the AM5 platform.

AMD recently announced two new additions to their 5000 series of CPUs, which further increased the lifespan of AM4 CPUs. However, with the guaranteed support for the AM5 platform till 2027, does it actually make sense to purchase a Ryzen 5000 series processor?

Solid Price To Performance

When it comes to price-to-performance, the Ryzen 5000 series even has the cheapest newer generation processors beat. Not only do you get incredible versatility in motherboard options thanks to the AM4 platform, but you’ll also be working with more affordable DDR4 memory, saving you a lot of money.

Combine that with the discounted price tag of 5000 series CPUs, and you’ll essentially be guaranteed excellent value out of these chips. It’s not like you’ll be completely left without an upgrade path once you upgrade to these CPUs either. After all, AMD recently extended support for the AM4 platform, providing it with two new processors.

These newer entries can very well make for suitable upgrades for those working with an entry-level 5000 chip such as the Ryzen 5 5600X.

Performance Uplift With 3D-V Cache

Speaking about performance compared to modern alternatives, AMD’s much more recent 3D-V Cache variants of the 5000 series actually hold up a lot better than the original CPUs. In fact, most 3D-V Cache variants aren’t even too old at this point, with the most recent one being released at the start of 2024.

These processors provide a significant performance uplift over their non-3D-V Cache variants, making them fantastic upgrades for someone already on the AM4 platform. Benchmarks from Hardware unboxed further highlight this, with each processor providing a performance uplift of at least 23 percent.

In addition to that, the fastest among these 3D-V Cache CPUs, The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, delivers comparable performance to the much more recent Ryzen 5 7600X. Of course, it mostly falls short of the higher-end Zen 4 processors, which is almost a given.

That is not to say that the performance on any of these CPUs is lacking. In fact, these CPUs will handle pretty much anything you throw at them. Both, the 5700X3D and the 5800X3D even make for adequate pairs with high-end GPUs such as the RTX 4080, and the 4090.

Suitable Upgrades For AM4 Users

If you are already on the AM4 platform, upgrading to the 5000 series is still a very viable option for you. As I showed previously, both the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 5700X3D provide remarkable performance for their price, and still keep up with modern processors.

CPUs on the more budget side of the spectrum, such as the Ryzen 5 5600X and the 5700X also pair well with similarly priced GPUs, making them a solid value proposition even in the current market.

Having said that, if you intend on building a system from scratch, I would recommend stretching your budget just a little bit to opt for the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. Not only will you get a much more future-proof system, but the performance hike also justifies the higher overall price.

Intel Offering 2 Additional Years of CPU Warranty Amid Rampant Crashing

Story Highlight
  • Intel is extending the warranty on 13th and 14th-generation processors from three to five years due to instability issues.
  • An update is coming in mid-August, but it may not fix all existing problems or prevent undetectable damage.
  • Intel suggests that while the warranty extension applies to retail boxed units, OEM system owners should contact their manufacturers for potential warranty extensions.

Intel announced its plans to add two more years of warranty on its boxed 13th and 14th-generation processors. This warranty is being offered due to the crashing and instability problems that Intel chips have faced for several months.

The problem affects all models 65W and above, so all flagship models and even entry-level mid-range processors are affected by the crashes. Since Intel’s processor warranty normally lasts three years, the extension will increase the warranty duration to five years for most boxed processors.

Why it matters: Intel is currently going through a difficult time. The company is laying off 15,000 employees as it navigates the challenging economic period. It hopes this move will help build goodwill among the PC hardware community.

No 14th Generation CPU Is Safe From The Crashing Problems.

The company will release a microcode update by mid-August to resolve the crashing issues during gaming and other workloads. However, the problem may be irreversible, and the upcoming microcode upgrade won’t “fix” chips that are already prone to crashes.

Users whose CPUs are already crashing must, therefore, send them back for replacements. Intel claims the update should prevent processors that haven’t had any problems from deteriorating.

However, it is currently unknown if CPUs exposed to high voltage have experienced damage or undetectable degradation that hasn’t yet caused a crash but could, in the future, cause errors or crashes.

Intel has made this announcement amid a class action lawsuit inquiry into the issue. The specifics of Intel’s new warranty extension are still being worked out, but the company promises to release more information soon.

Currently, the retail boxed units are covered by the two-year warranty extension; however, Intel’s statement suggests that owners of OEM systems should contact the manufacturer. As such, OEMs may also offer warranty extensions.

In a statement, the blue team has expressed regret for its delayed response. It now claims that Oxidation is not the primary cause of the instability problems plaguing its processors.

Xbox Series S|X Prices Going Up In Japan Despite Poor Hardware Sales

Story Highlight
  • Xbox recently saw a massive revenue decline of about 44% in terms of hardware sales.
  • Following this report, the company is increasing console prices in Japan, a region it is already struggling with.
  • This is the second time prices have been increased in this region.

While Xbox has performed well on the software side, its hardware results have been quite concerning. Recently, it was reported that the Xbox Series S|X were performing better in Japan than Microsoft’s last-generation console.

However, it seems this success will be shortlived. Microsoft has just confirmed another price hike for its consoles in the region.

Why it matters: Xbox is struggling to sell its consoles to the masses. The Japanese region is already one of its weakest, making this price hike quite shocking.

Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Game Pass Also Received A Price Hike Last Month

As reported by Famitsu, the Xbox Series X will be priced at 66,978 yen, up from the old 59,978 yen price.

Meanwhile, the 512GB Xbox Series S will now cost 44,578 yen, up from 37,978 yen. Finally, the 1TB Xbox Series S has seen its price reach 49,978 yen after a 5,000 yen increase.

This price increment will take effect on August 15, so those who want the consoles at the previous prices should buy them before the deadline. All in all, the consoles now cost up to 18% more.

In the Japanese markets, the main console at the top from a sales point of view is the Nintendo Switch, so it’s surprising that Xbox is increasing its prices. The gaming giant states that prices were adjusted due to market conditions, but this move is surprising.

It is also important to note that this is not the first time Xbox prices have been raised in Japan. Ultimately, this decision could hurt Microsoft’s position in the region, putting it further behind the PS5 and the Nintendo Switch.

Xbox
Xbox Is Also Dialing Down Console Marketing In Certain Regions

Xbox has recently confirmed that it is moving toward a software focus. This move is further proof, but the console business continues to suffer due to such decisions.

Apart from Japan, Xbox has raised its prices in various other regions in the past. Countries like Brazil have seen Xbox Series S console prices going up in the past, with Microsoft being unable to justify these decisions.

Konami Working On New In-House Silent Hill Game, Says Leaker

Story Highlights
  • An in-house Silent Hill project by Konami is reportedly in the works.
  • Konami created an in-house team last year that could be working on the project.
  • It joins Silent Hill 2, F, and Townfall as the fourth game in the franchise currently in development.

Silent Hill is one of the biggest horror franchises in the gaming industry. While it hasn’t seen a big new entry in years, it seems that the upcoming years will be great for fans. Silent Hill 2 Remake launches in October, while Townfall and F are also in development.

However, a reliable source has revealed that, in addition to these projects, another Silent Hill entry is in the works.

Why it matters: Konami has previously shown interest in working on several more entries for the IP. This move can help speed up this process with internal development resources.

Konami is internally working on another Silent Hill title.

According to Dusk Golem, Konami has intentions to create an in-house Silent Hill entry. As the company has shown a strong financial performance in Q1, it is committed to the IP’s future.

More transmissions are also planned, so fans can expect big reveals in the future. However, the source hasn’t revealed what the internally developed game will be. Whether it’s another remake or a new entry remains to be seen.

The publisher had relied on external teams for Silent Hill games until recently. For instance, the big remake is being handheld by Bloober Team, while Silent Hill: The Short Message was created by HexaDrive.

Last year, Konami created a ‘Silent Production Team.‘ Combining the leak with this information provides further insight into the gaming giant’s plans. This is much like the ‘Team Silent’ that led the development of the original Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill 2
Multiple Silent Hill projects are now in development.

This puts Konami in an excellent position to create something the fans want. Overall, it seems like 4 projects are currently in the works.

However, Silent Hill 2 Remake isn’t off to a great start. It has received heavy criticism for looking dated and featuring sloppy gameplay. The remake arrives in October, and it remains to be seen if it will be as big of a success as the publisher wants.

AC Unity Going Through Huge Resurgence Due To Paris Olympics

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity was released by Ubisoft almost a decade ago.
  • The game recently saw a surge in players due to the appearance of Arno Dorian in the Olympics.
  • Fans are now recreating Arno’s outfit, which was shown during the Olympics’ opening ceremony in-game.

Assassin’s Creed Unity was released almost a decade ago, and it is still fresh in many gamers’ memories. At that time, Ubisoft was quite famous among the fandom, as the Assassin’s Creed games were insanely good.

Assassin’s Creed Unity, in particular, was a game changer despite its problems. It had a slow start but set a high standard for future entries. That said, this particular entry saw a surge in players recently after Arno Dorian’s appearance at the Olympics

Why it matters: When a certain reference from a video game is portrayed this way to evoke nostalgia, players tend to revisit it even after a decade.

The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics featured Arno Dorian, the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Arno made an appearance as part of French Culture, which evoked nostalgia among fans.

Ubisoft teased Arno’s appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics beforehand, and fans were hoping to see it. Since the studio itself is tied to French culture and this Assassin’s Creed entry is set in Paris, this appearance was seen as a major deal.

Currently, 1543 Steam users are playing the game, which is impressive for a single-player release from a decade ago. The 24-hour peak sits at 2219 players, marking a major resurgence.

Assassin's Creed Unity
Assassin’s Creed Unity Is One of the Best Games Ubisoft Has Ever Created

This is impressive for a title with concurrent player counts in the hundreds until recently. The game is also available at a 75% discount, making this the best time to revisit Assassin’s Creed Unity.

Fans are now trying to recreate Arno’s outfit featured in the Olympics, and they have done an excellent job. It almost seems like an official release for the outfit, so it is good to see fans enjoying a decade-old game again.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft is preparing to release Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This entry takes the series to Japan, though it has been surrounded by plenty of controversy. Therefore, it is great to see a bit of positivity around the series due to the Olympics.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Reportedly Set To Arrive In Late October

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard is reportedly arriving in late October.
  • BioWare will announce the official release date later this month.
  • The studio is also planning to share an official roadmap.

Over the last two months, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has received a plethora of details. BioWare has detailed the RPG’s scope, performance target on consoles, and even a rough release window.

However, the team has yet to share an exact release date. According to the studio, this information is also on the way, but a leaker seems to have spilled the beans early on. He states that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will arrive in late October.

Why it matters: BioWare has been away from the industry for many years. This makes the fact that its next major RPG is just months away quite exciting.

Prior to the leak, EA’s latest financial report confirmed that the game would launch in October or later. Jeff Grubb seems to have narrowed down this window further, stating that BioWare has been targeting a late October release for some time.

It’s still October. Late October though.

-Jeff Grubb

He warns that the date could still shift. However, considering the fact that the studio is ready to make an official announcement soon, this seems unlikely. BioWare also promised to share a roadmap for the RPG alongside the release date.

Considering Gamescom 2024 is now weeks away, this may be the event that confirms the official release date. If Dragon Age: The Veilguard does indeed launch in October, it would be surrounded by the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, and Silent Hill 2.

Dragon Age The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Just Months Away

This would instantly make October one of the biggest months of 2024, with plenty of variety for all types of audiences.

Following back-to-back failures, Dragon Age: The Veilguard may be BioWare’s final shot at redemption. The studio’s last two games showed immense promise but ultimately ended up falling completely short.

BioWare promises to meet expectations this time around, so fans have high hopes for the release. Whatever happens, fans won’t be waiting too long to finally get their hands on the latest Dragon Age entry.

Marvel Rivals Pushes Xbox Series S As Low As 540p For 60FPS

Story Highlight
  • Unreal Engine 5 is known to be very demanding on all platforms.
  • Marvel Rivals runs on the same engine and uses a dynamic 1440p resolution on the Xbox Series X and PS5.
  • The Xbox Series S can only run up to 972p, with more intense sections falling to 540p.

While Unreal Engine 5 has been out for a while, it continues to prove highly demanding. Due to the engine’s design, most games built on this technology require upscaling.

Not only on PCs, but Unreal Engine 5 titles are also extremely demanding to run on consoles. A new report highlights these challenges using Marvel Rivals as an example. This hero shooter drops as low as 540p on the Xbox Series S.

Why it matters: Many believe that the engine still needs much more time since it can be overly demanding for the current type of hardware.

Digital Foundry recently released a new video discussing the Marvel Rivals beta. The game was tested on both consoles and PCs, with the video focusing on technical features, visuals, and performance.

It appears that the hero shooter struggles a bit on the consoles. It runs at a dynamic 1440p resolution, dropping to as low as 810p on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Marvel Rivals beta uses Lumen and screen space reflections on the consoles.

This decision will likely help offer a smoother experience without sacrificing the resolution too much. The beta looks worse on the Xbox Series S as it sees major visual cutbacks, such as the removal of Lumen Global Illumination.

Moreover, screen-space reflections and character shadows are also removed. Elsewhere, the quality of textures and character models is lowered. In terms of resolution, the Xbox Series S runs at a dynamic 972p, which can go as low as 540p.

Unreal Engine 5 Games on Xbox
Xbox Has Various Unreal Engine 5 Games On The Platform

The video concludes that the Marvel Rival beta is stable on all platforms. However, it does not come without the typical stuttering issues of Unreal Engine 5. Fortunately, CDPR might help find a solution to this problem.

Despite its technical hiccups, Marvel Rivals has been a major success in beta. The game saw over 50K concurrent players on Steam alone, so the hero shooter is shaping up to be a major hit.

Avowed Reportedly Pushed Back To 2025 Due To Busy Game Pass Lineup

Story Highlight
  • Avowed is in the final stages of development.
  • Obsidian previously stated it would launch in Fall 2024, but a report states that the RPG has been delayed until early 2025.
  • This seems to be due to Stalker 2 and other big titles releasing on Game Pass during Fall 2024.

Following Xbox’s latest showcase, there’s no question about its first-party lineup. Even for 2024, the gaming giant has titles like Stalker 2, Indiana Jones, and Black Ops 6 coming up. All of these will also launch on Game Pass from day one.

However, Avowed is one of Xbox’s biggest first-party titles for 2024. Currently slated for Fall 2024, this RPG was shaping up to be a major release for the entire industry. A new report states that these plans have changed, and the RPG has been delayed to 2025.

Why it matters: Games are typically delayed due to technical reasons. The report states that Avowed’s situation is not the same.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Stalker 2 May Have Caused The Delay

According to Tom Warren, Xbox will soon announce a delay for Avowed. After this announcement, the game will target an early 2025 launch.

It seems this is being done because Stalker 2 was delayed to November. This game has already seen various delays in the past, but the latest delay pushed it back by two months.

The report outlines that Microsoft wants to leave more breathing room for Avowed. Xbox fears that everything heading to Game Pass might overshadow Obsidian’s RPG later this year.

It is also said that the RPG is in good shape. However, further time to polish is never a bad thing.

Since Xbox is gearing up for a major Gamescom presence, it may officially announce the new date at this event. The likes of Indiana Jones could also receive release dates at the same event.

It has also been revealed that Obsidian is currently working on a third project. Therefore, this delay should allow the team ample time to continue focusing on everything that is currently being worked on.

Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws Will Show Up At The Booth

It is important to note that PlayStation is skipping Gamescom this year, leaving Xbox as the biggest attendee. Therefore, the latter has an opportunity to steal the spotlight later this month.

Moreover, Gamescom Opening Night Live will return in 2024.

Hosted by Geoff Keighley, this live showcase will feature various exciting gameplay trailers, reveals, and announcements. All in all, this event is shaping up to be one that fans won’t want to miss.

Former Rockstar Dev Says GTA 4 Was A Bit Too Dark And Depressing

Story Highlight
  • The Grand Theft Auto series went through major changes with GTA 4.
  • This game told a darker story and presented more realistic gameplay.
  • A former Rockstar developer has admitted that this entry was a bit too dark and depressing compared to its predecessors.

GTA 4 is often known to be the most different of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series. Offering a bleak and darker take on the series, this entry immediately stood out for its story.

This dark themes even carried over to the visual style of GTA 4, giving the whole game a depressing outlook. However, a former Rockstar developer admits that the studio may have gone overboard with these themes.

Why it matters: While the former developer believes this decision may not have been the best, many fans found GTA 4 enjoyable, specifically for its themes. The game has become a fan favorite since its release.

Speaking to SaninPlay, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij recalled how the Grand Theft Auto series focused on fun gameplay and light-hearted elements in the past.

He reminisced that GTA 4 was a huge departure from previous entries, setting a new precedent for the series. GTA 4 also portrayed a sense of realism through its core gameplay.

Rockstar focused on the physics and animations, and this focus ultimately created one of the most divisive Grand Theft Auto entries due to the driving mechanics. The developer believed that future entries would continue the trend, with Rockstar working toward making the IP more serious and depressing.

We made 4, and to my mind, it was a little too serious, too dark.

-Obbe Vermeij

GTA 4
Fans Want To See Rockstar Remake GTA 4 For Modern Hardware

However, the studio ultimately went in a different direction with GTA 5, which ended up being more light-hearted than its predecessor. This shift worked out quite well since the game has now sold about 200 million units.

Obbe Vermeij left Rockstar after working on GTA 4, but he recalled how the team implemented all kinds of crazy ideas in past games.

GTA San Andreas was particularly important for the studio since it went out of its way to implement various fun mechanics in this entry, partly because of how much time the team was given to work on the project. This is perhaps why many still consider it to be the best of the IP to this day.

Palword Dev Recommends Playing More Indie/AA Games Over AAA Games

Story Highlight
  • Pocketpair doesn’t seem to like the trend of AAA games relying on live service.
  • A Palworld developer suggests that indie and AA games are the most innovative right now.
  • He has asked fans to try out more indie games instead of sticking with the same AAA titles.

Palworld suddenly appeared this year and shocked the world by breaking many records. Despite being cheap and costing a fraction of most AAA titles, the game made billions in profit.

Pocketpair has also recently shared its thoughts on the difference between AA/indie and AAA games. After stating that fans should branch out from live-service games, the developer is now asking fans to give indie games more of a chance over AAA releases.

Why it matters: AAA games nowadays are filled with live service elements and battle passes. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed is a prime example.

Palworld
Palworld Shocked The World By Breaking Many Records On Steam

John Buckley, the Palworld community manager, has said in a Twitter post that fans should explore more indie games instead of sticking to their favorite AAA titles. He states that fans won’t regret this decision.

Play indies. Dig through Steam. Forego the latest battle pass in your favourite AAA game and use that money to buy a couple of cool indies instead.

-Bucky

Buckley reveals that he tries to play as many games as possible but spends most of his time in the indie industry. He believes that this is where true innovation lies.

Indie-Games
Most Indie Games Are Extremely Underrated Due To Massive Focus On AAA Games

While he isn’t against playing AAA games, the community manager thinks indie games are a better choice as they take much less time and are innovative. Buckley makes a solid point, but there are still many AAA releases that feature strong narratives without live service elements.

He said that Steam has a massive library of games, and many of them go unnoticed by the average person. According to him, many indie titles on Steam are arguably on par with some of the best AAA games, and we completely agree with this.

However, gamers tend to play AAA games more, so the community manager has admitted that asking them to try indies isn’t realistic. At the end of the day, both types of games can offer a great experience.

Still, if you have never tried an indie game, perhaps this is the hint that you need to finally take the plunge.

Intel Intends To Cut At Least 10,000 Jobs Amid Nosediving Market Share

Story Highlight
  • Intel is preparing for significant layoffs, potentially affecting a large portion of its workforce.
  • Malfunctions and performance issues with Intel’s latest processors are damaging the company’s reputation and finances.
  • The company’s layoffs are part of a broader pattern of job cuts in the tech and gaming sectors.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Intel is planning to lay off at least 10,000 employees. This decision comes as the company deals with a drop in market share and issues with its latest CPU models.

The decision may be announced within days, aligning with Intel’s second-quarter earnings report.

Why it matters: The layoffs are happening as Intel struggles with problems in its latest processors. These chips have been malfunctioning, and the company’s handling of the situation has faced criticism.

Intel Core-i9 14900KS gaming review
Intel’s latest-gen CPUs are crashing and malfunctioning, resulting in major damage to the company’s reputation.

Intel plans to save around $3 billion with these layoffs by next year. The company needs to boost its financial performance and strengthen its position in the semiconductor industry.

Intel is facing major challenges, including a big drop in PC sales and tough competition from AMD and Nvidia. The company reported a record loss of $2.8 billion in the first quarter, with revenue falling to $11.7 billion, down 36% from last year.

This drop is due to a 29% decrease in PC shipments and increased competition, hurting Intel’s profits. The company’s CEO has led major investments in developing Intel’s chip technology.

However, Intel has had difficulty keeping up with competitors like Nvidia, particularly in the growing area of AI chips. Besides financial issues, Intel is facing technical problems with its newest processors.

Reports of crashes and malfunctions have hurt the company’s reputation for reliability.

Game developers are adding in-game warnings for those using Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation processors. Even though a fix is scheduled for next month, Intel admits that the problem is serious enough to permanently harm the affected processors.

These problems are adding to Intel’s financial strain as it tries to maintain customer trust and maintain its market share.

Intel has pledged to support the affected employees during this transition and ensure they are treated with respect.

The layoffs are part of a larger trend in the tech and gaming industry, where companies are cutting jobs to manage costs in a challenging economic climate. Last year, about 1,200 tech companies laid off 263,180 workers. Moreover, just two weeks into 2024, the gaming industry saw 2,700+ layoffs.
