Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Japanese user reviews suggest the game has performed poorly in the region.
The Amazon Japan reviews show players are upset with Yasuke’s role as the protagonist and the other historical inaccuracies.
The game has also failed to surpass Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s all-time peak on Steam during its launch weekend.
The launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a do-or-die situation for Ubisoft as the studio teeters on the edge of closure. While the game’s launch has been better than analysts and critics expected, it still appears to have failed to satisfy many Japanese fans.
Reviews by Japanese gamers suggest that Assasin’s Creed Shadows has been received poorly in the region.
Why it matters: Ubisoft hoped to appeal to Japanese gamers with its latest blockbuster, but the gaming giant’s efforts appear to have been in vain.

Assassin's Creed Shadows has performed poorly in Japan based on Amazon Japan reviews, gaining only 1.9 out of 5 score.
Some Assassin's Creed Shadows Japanese user reviews have taken issues with Yasuke being a protagonist.
Assassin's Creed Shadows Japanese players have also criticized many historical inaccuracies.
Many Assassin's Creed Shadows criticisms by Japanese players are also because of gameplay reasons.
Many of the comments by Japanese users have pointed out historical inaccuracies surrounding Yasuke and the overall story. However, some gamers have also criticized gameplay elements.
The title was already projected to perform poorly in Japan compared to other places, as many local players and developers criticized the RPG in the past. Unfortunately, the situation is grimmer than imagined, as Ubisoft’s presence in Japan will likely be tainted by these controversies.
To add more salt to the wound, Assassin’s Creed Shadows failed to beat Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s all-time peak on Steam during its launch weekend. The latter achieved over 89K concurrent players on Steam shortly after launch.

Alan Wake 2 cost around €70 million to produce and recently recouped its development costs.
Remedy states that the game went over budget despite measures to keep costs down.
Rising budgets are a huge problem for the industry today and pose a major threat to everyone involved.
Alan Wake 2 was praised as one of the industry’s best horror games in 2023. The game told a very compelling story and delivered exceptional visuals, all while maintaining a relatively low budget compared to the average AAA release.
However, Remedy still struggled with the budget. In fact, a new interview reveals that the team exceeded its initial budget plans.
Why it matters: Budget management is a major concern in the gaming industry, and this instance highlights that even cheaper games are not exempt from this issue.
Alan Wake 2 Offers Unparalleled Horror Atmosphere
Speaking to MP1st, communications director Thomas Puha discussed the importance of managing budgets and the scope of games.
He highlighted how Remedy has faced tough financial situations at various points during its three-decade lifespan, which has led the team to carefully weigh its options when developing a new game.
While Alan Wake 2 had a much lower budget than expected, the game still went over budget. As Thomas Puha puts it, this happens frequently in the industry as developers aim to push ideas and make the best games possible.
We did go over budget on Alan Wake 2.
-Thomas Puha
Perhaps this was why the game stayed unprofitable for so long and only recently recouped the development costs. Moreover, Thomas Puha’s comment highlights a larger problem with the industry.
If moderately sized teams like Remedy struggle with budgets, it’s only natural to see bigger studios like Ubisoft spending millions of dollars on projects like XDefiant or Skull and Bones that may not necessarily turn out to be massive successes.
Alan Wake Cosplay by Edvard Spells
With more studios now taking note of this issue, perhaps gaming budgets will eventually go down in the future. In Remedy’s case, however, the team is moving forward with Max Payne remakes based on a similar budget as Alan Wake 2.

Thanks to Ubisoft’s latest Anvil Engine upgrades, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of 2025’s most visually stunning games.
The game delivers a more immersive and realistic Feudal Japan with RTGI lighting, Atmos weather simulation, and Micropolygon Geometry.
The enhanced physics system adds deeper interactivity, from dynamic wind affecting hair strands to destructible objects reacting precisely to player actions.
If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that Assassin’s Creed Shadows doesn’t disappoint in the visual department. The game marks the biggest graphical leap for the series since Assassin’s Creed Unity, thanks to the latest iteration of the Anvil engine.
A new analysis reveals the significant upgrades and features that Ubisoft’s latest iteration engine brings.
Why it matters: Being the first mainline title in years, fans had many expectations from Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and it seems to be living up to them in the technical department.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the first in the series to feature ray tracing, arriving nearly seven years after the technology’s debut. It utilizes ray-traced reflections and RTGI, significantly enhancing the game’s visuals.
The game is clearly designed around RTGI, as its impact is evident throughout. As Digital Foundry reveals, Ubisoft employs a hybrid RTGI system, combining per-pixel ray tracing with DDGI-like probe cascades for more natural and diffused lighting.
Another major leap is the use of Atmos, Ubisoft’s advanced weather system, which simulates dynamic wind and weather based on factors like humidity and temperature. This, along with a new physics system, makes the world feel more interactive, with individual hair strands moving with the wind and branches swaying independently of trees.
Players can also cut through various objects, such as bamboo, fabric, and thin doors, with precise breakpoints matching the collision.
AC Shadows RTGI Comparison via Digital Foundry
Lastly, the game incorporates Micropolygon Geometry, akin to Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite. This allows for highly detailed objects while eliminating level-of-detail popping in rigid assets like rocks and buildings.
From a technical standpoint, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is no less than a marvel with the dynamic and lived-in world that Ubisoft has managed to create. If anything, the new engine promises new heights for the franchise going forward.

God of War is reportedly set to receive a Greek spin-off this year.
An insider implies that the previously rumored remasters of the original trilogy are not in development.
PlayStation’s Greek spin-off could fill the gap between the third and fourth mainline entries of the IP.
The God of War franchise just turned 20 recently, but PlayStation did not do much to celebrate this mighty occasion. While rumors regarding a remastered trilogy began swirling a few months ago, the gaming giant has stayed relatively quiet.
An update regarding these rumors also suggests that no such remasters were ever in development. Instead, PlayStation appears to be working on a completely new God of War side project.
Why it matters: Following recent reports, fans have shown enthusiasm regarding a return to the Greece era.
Sharing an update on the recent discussions, Jeff Grubb says that the Greek God of War project is a side story for PlayStation.
What exactly this entails for the franchise remains to be seen, but the insider implies that the Greek project will be smaller scale and have a lower budget than the traditional AAA adventures of the Norse saga.
He also went on to say that his sources were unable to comment on the recent rumors regarding God of War remasters. Fortunately, fans will likely be more than happy with a return to Greece, even without the charm of the original games.
Perhaps PlayStation is looking to fill in the gaps between the Greek trilogy finale and the first Norse entry. A prequel comic already revealed details about Kratos’ journey between the events of God of War 3 and 2018, potentially setting the stage for something similar in game form.
Kratos Could Face Even Stronger Foes In The Future
Grub’s comment is interesting because PlayStation previously showed interest in Kratos’ Greek era with the excellent Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarok. Meanwhile, fans have also shown interest in an Egyptian setting for a future title.

GTA VI should learn from RDR2’s insanely detailed lives of NPCs, where NPCs respond to your behaviors and actions.
The ability to fully customize each part of the weapons and customize characters based on weather and season should be taken from RDR2.
Hair growth over time, inventory system for weaponry, and dynamic weather that impacts the vehicle’s mechanics should also be added.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has set a new standard for open-world realism, immersing players in a world that blurs the lines between the virtual and real. Despite being over six years old, not many games have managed to come close to it.

RDR2 Features Are Still Advanced
Since Rockstar is behind this game, they should take inspiration from it for its upcoming GTA VI since Red Dead Redemption 2 had features that were way ahead of its time, which, even today, feels highly advanced.
NPCs Leading Interesting Lives
One of Red Dead Redemption 2’s key features is its lively NPCs. They aren’t the standard bots that are programmed only to walk and interact with you when you come close to them, but they lead interesting lives.
They have a routine and a schedule. For instance, a farmer wakes up, grabs the newspaper, picks up the buckets, goes to fill them up, and then pours the water for their goats. Then, they complete their jobs and go back home to sleep.
They all have some work to do and don’t feel lifeless. These behaviours make the game incredibly immersive, and some players have spent a long time only observing these NPCs because of how insanely detailed their routines are.
Highly Responsive NPCs
Not only that, but the NPCs conversed with your character just like people do in real life. Players who’ve replayed RDR2 several times still take the time to interact with the NPCs because of how realistic they behave and respond to your actions.
I expect GTA VI to have the same level of detail, if not more, for the NPC to make the world feel more lively. Sure enough, Rockstar is rumoured to feature extremely detailed NPCs as well, according to Take-Two’s NPC AI Patent.
Realistic Graphics
Indeed, RDR2’s realistic graphics have set its standard in gaming. But I expect GTA VI to be way more realistic than Rockstar’s previous titles, given that a former Rockstar developer stated that GTA VI’s realism would “blow people away.”
Outfits To Suit The Weather & Season
Another area where RDR2 shined was its character customizations. In RDR2, depending on the season, location, and weather, you must keep up with your dress yourself or accordingly. This also affected some of the game’s mechanics.
This needs to be implemented in GTA VI as well. It would be great if our character were prone to move slowly due to soaked fabrics. In contrast, dressing too warmly in Vice City heat could reduce stamina or increase discomfort.
Customize Each Part Of A Weapon
Alongside character customizations, detailed weapons customization from RDR2 should also be considered in GTA VI. While GTA V allowed you to customize weapons, every weapon felt the same due to the lack of detail.
Meanwhile, RDR2 allowed players to customize each part of the gun. For instance, you could paint the barrel, the stock, and the nozzle all in a separate color. Each customization felt unique and personal, so GTA VI should inherit this feature.
Inventory System
Speaking of weapons, GTA VI should implement the inventory feature like in RDR2. I expect players to sling rifles to their backs, manage which weapons to keep, and utilize their vehicles for additional storage.
RDR2 Inventory (Image Credit – Interface In Game)
Besides vehicles, there should be briefcases or other containers to hold other weaponry you can carry around. This would add to the immersion while being practical for players since no one wants to have only two weapons simultaneously.
Side Missions
Another major aspect of RDR2 was its side quests. GTA V had tedious tow trucking missions, collecting quests, and bounty side missions, but these don’t come close to RDR2’s hunt for the gunslinger, dinosaur bones, and bounty quests.
GTA 6 desperately needs good side content. Even GTA 4 had great side missions like drug deals and assassinations, so GTA 6 should go above and beyond in adding these side quests, which would undoubtedly add to the game’s immersion.
Dynamic Weather System
Next, dynamic weather should be added to GTA VI. While there are rumors that GTA VI will feature hurricanes and storms, I’m expecting this rumor to come to life, as it also impacts the vehicle’s mechanics.
It would be great to have heavy storms causing reduced visibility, which should impact driving, making the vehicles skid and slip depending on the type of your vehicle.
Hair Growth Over Time
A minor feature in Red Dead Redemption 2 was hair growth. Over time, your character had hair grown, which needed grooming. A leak suggests that this feature would be carried over in GTA 6, and I’m all up for it.

From Take Two’s patents and GTA 6’s trailer, we can assume that the NPCs will be extremely responsive and immersive in GTA 6.
They might have interesting lives similar to those in RDR2. They’ll behave based on their situation, and their behaviour won’t be the same every time.
Other AI features might include a realistic traffic system with self-aware drivers and randomly generated objects for enterable interiors.
Ever since the first trailer of GTA 6 was released, people have been going crazy about for game. The trailer has already surpassed 200 million views, making it one of the most anticipated games in the history of gaming.
Advanced NPC System
But do you know a key feature that will reportedly be implemented in the game, and the evidence around it can be found in the same trailer? This feature is Rockstar’s new take on AI, which might revolutionize gaming forever.
NPCs Leading Interesting Lives
As the name suggests, the AI system directly impacts the behaviour of the NPCs. Consider the highly detailed NPCs from Red Dead Redemption 2. They led interesting lives with strict routines, jobs, and schedules that they adhered to.
We can see NPCs having their own lives in the trailer of GTA 6; some are watering their lawn, some are going on a biker rally, and some are catching up with their friends. The world seems extremely lively, unlike previous GTA titles.
Unique Behaviors Depending On Situation
Another great thing about the NPCs in RDR2 was that they responded the same way as people in real life would. This meant that no interaction was the same, and you always had that novelty aspect when it comes to NPCs.
NPCs Might React To Weather, Location, And Situation (Image Credit – Justia Patents)
This could also be the case for GTA 6, except it’ll be way more advanced. Based on Take-Two’s AI patent for NPCs, we can expect that NPCs will have their own response system, much better than that present in RDR2.
These NPCs might also react differently to different weather conditions. If they think the weather is too harsh, they might not go out. But these behaviours aren’t etched in stone and could differ for each scenario.
Realistic Traffic System
Rockstar is said to implement a highly advanced AI traffic system that mimics real-life traffic incidents. This is huge because driving is one of the game’s integral parts, and making it realistic enhances the immersion by a mile.
Responsive Drivers
According to Take-Two’s patent for virtual navigation, the new system will change the road conditions and traffic if there is an obstacle. This means that traffic isn’t just vehicles following a track and reacting when something happens to them.
Road Rage To A Whole New Level
With the new system, they’re more actively engaged with a sense of awareness of the world around them. Pairing this with the previously mentioned AI system, where NPCs have their moods and behaviour, we could also expect tons of road rage.
The new police chase system could also be extremely engaging with this highly realistic traffic system. Imagine other angry drivers crash into the police cars, causing you to gain leverage to evade that scene.
Irresponsible Drivers
This could also mean that police will chase other people when you’re not wanted. For instance, you might be casually driving around and get bumped by a wanted suspect because he was overspeeding and couldn’t control his vehicle.
From the trailer, we saw how a van driver crashed his vehicle, probably because the driver was overspeeding. This seems like an event that is happening on its own in the world without any of our involvement in it whatsoever.
Advanced Interior System
The other aspect of this AI system isn’t limited to NPCs; it also reaches buildings. With another patent around environment generation, we can expect many places to generate interiors using combinations of elements.
GTA 6 AI Interior System (Image Credit – Justia Patents)
Randomly Generated Objects
What this could mean is that Rockstar would have objects for the interiors, such as chairs, paintings, sofas, lamps, and tables, which would be randomly generated for each interior.
Given that 40% of the buildings are likely to be enterable, it only makes sense to implement this new AI feature since it would’ve taken developers a lot of time to map out objects for each interior manually.
What To Expect?
While all of these are official patents, it is possible that they won’t be implemented in the final game. So, take everything with a grain of salt. However, knowing Rockstar, they will definitely go above and beyond when it comes to AI.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has reached 2 million players.
This milestone has exceeded both Assassin’s Creed Origins And Odyssey.
The game is now one of Ubisoft’s most successful modern titles.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows became one of Ubisoft’s recent titles to reach 1 million players on day one. This milestone was followed by continued praise for the game from various sources, including highly renowned industry developers.
Ubisoft is back with yet another announcement regarding its latest RPG. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has now hit 2 million players.
Why it matters: This release could be a major turning point for the gaming giant after persistent financial troubles over the last two years.
Ubisoft’s latest milestone has come alongside yet another message thanking the fans for their support.
Moreover, the gaming giant has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has reached 2 million players faster than Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, making it the second most successful of the RPG formula.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla still stands as the biggest title, making over $1 billion in total, but the series’ first Feudal Japan offering could eventually rival this figure if it continues to progress at this rate.
Like last time, Ubisoft has refrained from sharing sales figures. The gaming giant is still likely counting figures from its subscription service, though the 2 million player count remains impressive despite this fact. Perhaps official sales figures are around the corner, too.
The Latest Assassin’s Creed Title Offers Two Playable Characters
Following this encouraging news, the gaming giant could see its stock recovering very soon. While many are still doubtful about Ubisoft’s future, the French gaming giant might be on its way to a major redemption.

The former GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption Online game designer says that players just don’t explore open-world games anymore.
These games require huge time investments and are massive, which fatigues players and gives them exploration anxiety.
Running across a big map seems like a chore to players, so developers need to take the map size into account.
The former Rockstar Games developer Cameron Williams says players simply don’t explore these massive open-world spaces anymore. In an era of fast-paced live-service titles that grab all your attention, most gamers no longer want to spend time exploring large maps.
Why it matters: The ex-GTA 6 designer argues that large open-world games appeal less to most players because of gameplay fatigue.
Speaking to PC Gamer, the former designer clarifies that open worlds lead to gameplay fatigue for players because they require big attention spans and time investment. However, this can quickly get exhausting for gamers and cause ‘exploration anxiety.’
Players just don’t explore right? Whether that’s because you have a super action-oriented game or because they just simply aren’t compelled.
Cameron says that even getting players to look at a certain place in an open world proves to be a big challenge for developers. Therefore, they need to be manipulated into doing certain activities—like how Red Dead Redemption 2 introduces fishing in a main mission.
They’re wondering, ‘Okay, how far away is the next thing? I really gotta run all the way across the map? And what’s my gain?’

Ubisoft recently partnered with streamer Olivia Monroe for a sponsored Assassin’s Creed Shadows stream.
The French gaming giant got the streamer banned after a major mistake shortly after she went live.
Ubisoft misread the stream time as 7 PM instead of 7 AM.
Ubisoft has also sponsored various streamers and YouTubers to promote the game, though one particular sponsorship has gone horribly wrong. Twitch streamer Olivia Monroe, who was sponsored to stream Assassin’s Creed Shadows, was banned following a major mistake from Ubisoft’s end.
Why it matters: This is not the first time Ubisoft made a mistake regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ management. The gaming giant previously released the RPG ahead of schedule on Steam at launch.
Vtuber Olivia Monroe Was Banned For Around 5 Hours | Image via X
According to her recent X post, Olivia Monroe had planned to stream Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Twitch at 7 AM.
These plans were abruptly halted when the streamer was banned after Ubisoft requested a takedown, and Twitch complied with the request. Later investigations revealed that the situation was caused by an oversight from the French gaming giant’s team.
Ubisoft believed the streamer went live at 7 PM instead of the previously agreed-upon time of 7 AM. Fortunately, Olivia Monroe has since been unbanned. Her Twitch channel was restored nearly five hours after the incident, and, as expected, Ubisoft received plenty of criticism following the mistake.

Luke Dale, the voice behind Hans Capon, wants a Kingdom Come Deliverance set during the Hussite wars.
The rich historical event could make some really good stories as per the voice actor.
However, the problem of time and development costs arises with such a pitch.
Being hailed as 2025’s greatest release, Kingdom Come Deliverance is still making headlines in the gaming world and will continue to do so for a very long time. With one of the most successful RPG releases ever, Warhorse Studios has a busy road ahead, with fans expecting much more from the franchise.
Despite being less than two months from the game’s initial release, fans have already started to demand a threequel for the franchise. Sir Hans Capon’s voice actor talks precisely about that, pitching the third entry set during the Hussite Wars.
Why it matters: Kingdom Come Deliverance has done an amazing job representing the real-life historical events and characters of 15th-century Bohemia. However, the series can potentially cover many more events, and the Hussite Wars are a good start.
In an interview, Luke Dale, the voice behind Sir Hans Capon, was asked what his version of a future Kingdom Come Deliverance game might look like.
If money wasn’t a problem and time wasn’t a problem I’d take us to the Hussite Wars I think that’s an incredibly incredibly Rich part of history
Luke mentioned the potential problems of such a threequel, involving a huge developmental budget and time. Just for reference, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2’s script took 6-7 years to make.
The voice actor adds that the setting could give birth to some really great stories with a lot of history behind the lore.
For those not familiar, the Hussite Wars were religious wars that spanned Bohemia. The clash between the Hussites and the combined Catholic forces lasted from 1419 to 1434.
Roadmap For Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Fortunately, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 also takes place a bit prior in 1404, which makes such an event possible. However, Warhorse Studio would have to expand the scale more this time, generating whole scales of battles. Still, that doesn’t mean they can do so.

The developer welcomed the return of the clear counter system.
The Ubisoft RPG has received positive reviews from critics so far.
With middling user scores to add, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has started its lifecycle in an eventful manner. The RPG has been called one of Ubisoft’s best for what it’s worth and now another creative has come out in support of the game, highlighting how good its combat is.
Why This Matters: With all the controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the RPG can use all the good word of mouth it gets.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows combat was singled out and praised by Michael Douse
Michael Douse, the publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3, praised the combat in Assassin’s Creed Shadows on X, considering it one of the best parts of the RPG. The developer stated that the combat felt very tight and deliberate and is the best system the series has seen in many years.
Douse also highlighted the clear counter system in the title’s combat saying he missed this aspect of Assassin’s Creed and it was nice to see it return. All-in-all the Baldur’s Gate 3 publishing director was in awe of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and was a big fan of the combat.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has opened to universal positive acclaim.
Whatever the case, this adds to the positive reviews Assassin’s Creed Shadows has under its belt with its Steam and PS5 performances showcasing the effect of good word of mouth. And, if one thing is certain, the RPG needs all the positive PR it can get as Ubisoft is heavily reliant on the game’s success for its future.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has the entire burden of Ubisoft on its back. The game received some excellent reviews from the critics scoring a decent 82 on Metacritic. However, the audience doesn’t seem to share the same passion as most reviews.
Ubisoft’s latest title just launched for the public and has amassed a very mediocre 5.8 User Score on Metacritic, with most complaints being around the story and the wokeness of the characters.
Why it matters: While it is generally doing well, if the game fails to hit big numbers, we could see Ubisoft losing its spot in the industry and filing for bankruptcy amid the still-falling stock values.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a user score of just 5.8 on Metacritic
Assassin’s Creed Shadows debuted to a 5.8 User Score on Metacritic for the PS5, but things are even worse for the PC version as the game has an extremely low score of 3.8. This is despite the title having ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam.
Now, the hate in most of the reviews surrounds the incorrect portrayal of Japanese culture and characters. The biggest complaint is still the characters being woke, especially the protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, and the story isn’t anything special.
