AC Shadows Is ‘Possibly The Most Transformative PS5 Pro Upgrade,’ Managing To Hit 60 FPS Even With Full RTGI

The PS5 Pro's Potential Truly Shines With AC Shadows!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows on the PS5 Pro is the most transformative upgrade with complete RTGI on the 60 FPS performance mode.
  • However, the PS5 Pro still suffers from image quality with no implementation of PSSR.
  • The Quality and Balanced mode introduces RT reflections, which aren’t as impressive as the Performance mode.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has managed to surpass everyone’s expectations, at least in the graphical department, thanks to its implementation of RTGI.

However, the base consoles do have to sacrifice framerates to achieve this visual leap. PS5 Pro users, on the other hand, won’t have to make such a sacrifice. Featuring RTGI even in the 60 FPS performance mode, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of the biggest PS5 Pro upgrades thus far.

Why It Matters: Despite public doubts about the PS5 Pro’s hardware, Assassin’s Creed Shadows proves otherwise, delivering one of this generation’s best AAA performances.

After comparing the base Xbox Series X|S and the PS5 console, Digital Foundry released a new video on the mid-gen refresh PS5 Pro console. The tech experts have now dubbed Assassin’s Creed Shadows on the PS5 Pro as the “most transformative PS5 Pro upgrade.”

The difference between the Performance mode of the base console and the mid-refresh is substantial. The PS5 Pro features completely transformed shades on objects and diffused lighting, while the PS5 version looks flat with its baked lighting, struggling to hold a candle to its successor.

While the PS5 Pro’s lighting and shading are outstanding, the image quality takes a hit, with no improvement over the base console. Not utilizing the PSSR, despite Ubisoft’s earlier promises, the pixel crawl and blocky pattern make the game look bad while closing in.

Moreover, testing revealed that the game was running at a 1080p resolution upscaled to 4k, with RTGI consuming much of the PS5 Pro’s GPU.

Quality and balanced modes add Ray Traced reflections, absent on the base PS5, but they aren’t much better than the 60 FPS performance mode, which balances visuals and frame rates well.
