Competition Killer!

Review Summary

The ID-Cooling Frozn A720 offers impressive cooling performance with its dual-tower design and two 140mm fans, making it a solid competitor to high-end air coolers at a more affordable price. Its excellent heat dissipation and large surface area make it ideal for demanding setups, though its noise level is higher than competitors like the Noctua NH-D15. Easy to install and compatible with a wide range of Intel and AMD sockets, it’s a great choice for those looking for high-performance cooling at $69.99.

Cooler Design (Image By Tech4Gamers)

ID-Cooling Frozn A720 is a new high-performance CPU air cooler that is next iteration of A620. A620 is quite popular air cooler from this manufacturer and now A720 is making some waves in the market as it costs significantly less while offering good performance. This cooler is compatible with Intel LGA1700 and AMD AM5. Let’s take a look at the design of this cooler.

What’s New In The Heatsink?

I am showing the front side of the main heatsink. The front and rear have an identical layout. There are a total of 44+6 fins on each tower making a total count of 100 fins providing large surface area.

These fin arrays are in microwave design. This design helps counter the noise generated from air turbulence and improve heat dissipation.

This is a step design. There are 6 fins in the stepped area. This is done to provide better RAM clearance.

In the second picture, I am showing a side view of the heatsink. A few bend fins are noticed which seems to have skipped the QC check. There are insets on each end in which the head of fan clips are inserted.

The above picture shows the top view of the heatsink. There are two plastic covers over the top with quite some design and styling. FROZN is printed on the base of each cover. This is done purely for aesthetic purpose. The terminating tips of the heat pipes are concealed in this design.

The mounting plate is pre-installed on the base using 2x screws. There are two spring-loaded screws on the mounting plate. The plate rests over the heatsink like aluminum stack.

This cooler has 7x 6mm copper heat pipes. There is a step design on the heatsink with 6 fin rows having stepped in near the base. The heat pipes are designed to cover the maximum area inside the fin stack for effective heat dissipation.

This cooler has a nickel-plated copper base. ID-Cooling has provided a high-performance FROST X25 thermal paste with this cooler.

140mm PWM Fans

ID-Cooling Corsair has provided two 140mm fans with this cooler.

Both fans are black and each has 9x blades. There are stylish, cut-to-size anti-vibration pads on the mounting corners. There is a slope down design near the mounting corner borders. The center has ID-Cooling brand logo.

The backside frame has a 4-arms in a spiral design. One arm catches the wires coming from the center. The fans are made in China and their power rating is printed as well.

There are two arrow markers. These provide the direction of airflow through the fan and the direction in which blades spin. The frame of these fans is quite sturdy and stylish. Both fans are PWM controlled for which there is a single cable per fan with a 4-pin PWM connector. These fan use Fluid Dynamic Bearings.

Installation

I have tested the cooler on an Intel LGA1700 socket. Here are the steps:

  1. Place the backplate on the motherboard.
  2. Place the LGA1700 spacers on the standoff screws.
  3. Place Intel mounting brackets over the screws.
  4. Secure the Intel mounting brackets using thumb nuts.
  5. Remove the protective cover from the base of the cooler.
  6. Apply the thermal paste over the CPU.
  7. Place the cooler on the CPU by aligning the spring-loaded screws with the standoffs on the mounting bracket.
  8. Tighten the screws to install the heatsink.
  9. Install both fans on the heatsink using the fan clips.
  10. Connect the cables. Installation is completed.

Clearance

The ID-Cooling Frozn A720 has a stock dimension of 140x153x163mm (LxWxH). Let’s take a look at the clearance of this cooler.

The RAM clearance without the front fan is 58mm. If the front fan is to be fully seated in its stock position, then this clearance reduces to 28mm. Let’s say if we have to accommodate the RAM having a height of 34mm, then the front fan would need to be moved upwards, which would increase the overall height of the cooler to 170mm from 163mm.

There is no PCIe slot clearance issue with the MSI MEG Z790 ACE MAX motherboard. The large cover on the rear and top of the motherboard does not obstruct the heatsink. You would need a PC Case with a minimum clearance of 170 mm for the CPU cooler’s height.

Testing

I have used below mentioned configuration to test the performance of this cooler: –

Test Bench

Here is the settings table for testing:

All Cores 5.4GHz on P-Cores, 4.2GHz on E-Cores
VCore (V) Auto
Power Limits Intel Default
Thermal Paste Noctua NT-H1
Test Run Time 30 minutes CINEBENCH R23.2
Idle Time 10 minutes
Fan/Pump Speed 100% PWM Duty Cycle
Monitoring Software HWInfo64

Here are the thermal results:

The ID-Cooling Frozn A720 has an impressive performance which is comparable to other high-end air coolers on the market. However, the overall noise level of this cooler is tad high particularly when compared to the Noctua NH-D15.

Should You Buy It?

Buy It If

✅You want an all-black, high-performance cooler: The ID-Cooling has a stealth outlook, and it is a high-performance cooler designed for demanding CPUs.

✅You are after the best value cooler: The ID-Cooling Frozn A720 offers a fantastic performance while costing significantly less than the competition, making it the best value cooler.

Don’t Buy It If

❌You are using high-profile RAM with limited space in PC Case: This cooler has limited clearance for high-profile RAMs, so the height of the front fan needs to be increased, which would increase the overall height of the cooler.

My Thoughts

ID-Cooling has released yet another high-performance flagship air cooler taking over the A620. The Frzon A720 is a dual-tower configuration that comes with two 140x25mm fans. The heatsink has a step layout on both towers to provide better RAM clearance

There are 44 fins on each tower, followed by 6 fins on the stepped portion. This provides a large surface area. The fins are in micro wave design for better heat dissipation.  The complete assembly is black color coated and seems like a soldered design.

Each tower has 7x copped heat pipes with 6mm thickness. The base of this cooler is nickel-plated, though it does not seem like a chrome finish. This cooler is rated for 300W TDP, making it competitive in the market.

The mounting plate is pre-installed, and there are two spring-loaded screws on this plate, making it a two-point contact. This is not a direct contact technology, as the heat pipes don’t make direct contact with the CPU.

ID-Cooling has bundled two 140x25mm fans. These are non-RGB black fans. Each fan has 9x blades. These fans are rated for up to 1800 ± 10% RPM generating 98.6 CFM airflow and air pressure of 2.26 mmH₂O. The noise level rating is 33.5 dB(A). These fans use Fluid Dynamic Bearings.

The installation of this cooler on an Intel LGA1700 socket requires 11 items and 6 steps. This is a typical ID-Cooling style mounting, as I have seen on many other ID-Cooling coolers. Installation of this cooler is a straightforward process.

This cooler is compatible with Intel LGA20xx / 1851 / 1700 / 1200 / 115x and AMD AM4 / AM5 sockets. It retails for USD 69.99 and comes with a 3-year warranty. Its competitive performance makes it a better buy.
