As Microsoft accelerates next-generation efforts with for Xbox Helix, the company continues to make big changes to its console business. For starters, Asha Sharma has spearheaded a return to traditional exclusives with the intention of releasing one big first-party exclusive every year.
Multiple new Fallout titles have also been announced, and a new report now confirms that Xbox plans to have at least one big system seller for Project Helix at launch.
Why it matters: Xbox hasn’t had a compelling lineup of exclusives in years now, but Asha Sharma’s renewed focus on this part of the business could change things drastically in the coming years.
As GamesRadar reports, Xbox believes one reason why the Series S|X consoles failed is because they lacked true system sellers at release.
Although Microsoft announced big games like Fable and launched Halo Infinite early into the hardware’s lifespan, Microsoft feels the Series S|X lacked compelling exclusives. Because consoles typically launch with a slim lineup, these games do a lot of heavy lifting during the first year or so.
This is something the gaming giant aims to address with Project Helix. The report states that the company is hoping to launch at least one game it describes as a “killer exclusive” alongside the console as a major selling point.
What this killer exclusive will be remains a mystery, but Microsoft’s current first-party pipeline hints at a few possibilities.
First, the entire Halo trilogy is said to be getting the remake treatment, so Halo 2 Remake could be one potential launch title. Similarly, The Elder Scrolls 6 could launch in time for Project Helix’s release if Bethesda is able to align its development schedule with Microsoft’s timeline.
id Software is also working on a new Doom project, and reports point to ongoing work on a new Wolfenstein project.
