Only 7 PS5 Games Have Sold Over 100k Physical Copies This Year In The US

Only Two Games Were Able To Sell More Than 10k Physical Copies Last Week In The Region.

Story Highlight
  • Only seven PS5 games have sold more than 100k copies physically in the US this year.
  • During the last tracking week, only two titles sold more than 10k physical units.
  • This analysis corroborates previous data, which revealed that 85% of PS5 games are sold digitally.

Sony’s physical disc debacle is still reverberating throughout the gaming industry. Players are explicitly against this move from the Japanese giant, while lawmakers are starting to file lawsuits against the company to prevent a monopoly over digital store prices.

Fans have even threatened to abandon the PlayStation brand altogether if Sony doesn’t reverse its decision to end physical disc production. However, sales figures are not favoring the players, and an analyst has now revealed that physical titles aren’t performing too well on retail.

Why it matters: With sales this low, Sony probably won’t reverse its digital-only strategy, instead hoping fans forget about this after a while and move on to buying games digitally.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella revealed on Bluesky that only seven PS5 games have sold over 100k physical copies in 2026 in the United States. Piscatella also disclosed that merely two PlayStation games sold more than 10k physical units between July 5th and 11th, showcasing the dismal performance of the medium.

Previous data also corroborates what the analyst is reporting, as 85% of PS5 games sold during Q4 2025 were digital purchases, while only 15% accounted for physical discs.

The best-selling games released on the console this year have also sold a fair share of their copies through digital means. The likes of EA Sports FC 26 and Crimson Desert sold less than 20% of their total on physical discs, while the medium barely accounted for 30% of Resident Evil Requiem’s sales, as per Alinea Analytics.

Major 2026 releases on PlayStation sales data reveal digital dominance.
The biggest games of 2026 have sold less than one-third of their copies through physical discs.

Ghost of Yotei was the only title that sold one-third of its copies through physical discs in 2026, with digital accounting for 65% of its sales. Considering how GameStop’s CEO has also dismissed concerns over the digital-only strategy, it’s hard to see a scenario where Sony decides to reverse its decision.

Do you think Sony should still make physical discs for the niche player base that likes to buy them? Would you buy a PS6 if it was digital-only? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
