Story Highlight
  • PlayStation recently confirmed a complete shift to digital games distribution starting from 2028.
  • This announcement has led to immense backlash already, and many fans are criticizing the gaming giant.
  • Many have threatened to skip the PS6 and switch to a different platform following this decision.

As PlayStation prepares to wrap up the PS5 generation, the gaming giant has come forward with a massive announcement today. PlayStation has confirmed that it will no longer support physical discs for its platforms starting from 2028, marking a huge shift for the business as a whole.

This announcement left many gamers shocked, and plenty of avid PlayStation fans have also come forward to speak out against Sony’s decision. In fact, many claim that they will not support the PS5 and PS6 if this change comes into effect.

Why it matters: Digital distribution has gradually taken over the industry, but many remain fond of physical games.

In general, reactions to PlayStation’s latest update have been largely negative. Many gamers have caught on to the fact that this announcement may be a teaser of Sony launching the PS6 in 2028, which will most likely be limited to a digital-only model.

Fans argue that this move limits future ownership prospects for those sticking to the platform. Moreover, others are upset at the fact that Sony is limiting gamers and taking away options in getting rid of physical releases.

Some have stated that they will likely move to PC following this announcement. Others also pointed to recent PlayStation disappointments in regards to live-service cancellations, rising prices, and more when highlighting their grievances with the platform.

The PS6 could slip beyond 2027, and might release in 2028 or even 2029

Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether these criticisms will have a tangible impact on PlayStation’s decision.

The gaming giant has been known to walk back on decisions due to public backlash in the past, but the shift to digital distribution does make sense for PlayStation based on the general market trends and behavior. Nevertheless, fans are clearly not happy with this move.
