Story Highlight
  • The refurbished variant of the PS5 Slim is now retailing for $100 more on PS Direct.
  • The disc edition was $450, but is now selling for $550, while the digital version is $500.
  • The launch PS5 model is currently the cheapest variant, retailing for $400 in refurbished condition.

Buying consoles has been an extremely difficult task throughout this generation. From shortages caused by the pandemic to cost hikes because of tariffs, gamers have had to face one problem after another while trying to procure hardware.

The memory crisis and the subsequent price increases in its wake have also impacted console sales, with gaming giants like Sony hiking the cost of PS5 by $100 worldwide. As it turns out, the situation is so bad that not even refurbished consoles are exempt from surging prices.

Why it matters: Increasing the cost of refurbished consoles doesn’t make much sense on Sony’s part, as these units had already been produced before the memory crisis hit.

Sony has increased the price of refurbished PS5 slim edition consoles by a whopping $100 on PS Direct. The refurbished disc variant is now retailing for $550, while it previously cost just $450. On the other hand, the refurbished digital edition will now set you back $500, a massive increase from its $400 price tag.

The launch edition PS5 also has a refurbished variant, which is only retailing for $400 on the website, making it the cheapest way you can buy the hardware right now. Considering how Sony offers a 12-month warranty on them, a refurbished console isn’t a bad deal when the lower prices are taken into account.

Just last month, Sony shocked the gaming community and massively hiked the cost of new PS5 consoles by $100, selling the disc-based variants for $650 on the market. The PS5 Pro got an even pricier hike, going up $150, while the digital edition started retailing for $600, worth 50% more than it was at launch.

Last month’s PS5 price hike still hasn’t sunk in for many gamers.

These surging costs have already started affecting the console’s sales, especially in Japan. Fans are also not happy with the gaming giant, and Sony has a lot of ground to cover before it can earn their trust back.
