Six years into its lifespan, the PS5 has proven to have struggled with liquid metal cooling on various occasions. Previously, it was even said that these problems would eventually expand to practically every console that exists on the market.
Sure enough, another case of PS5 overheating has shown up, with the liquid metal being the culprit once again.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s decision to rely on liquid metal for cooling was a bold choice. However, it seems this choice hasn’t exactly paid off, with rumors suggesting the PS6 will not rely on liquid cooling.

As shared on Twitter, console technician Modyfikator89 recently received a PS5 with cooling issues.
Upon closer inspection, the technician noted that the Gallium in the liquid metal ate away at the heatsink and formed a hard layer over the APU. The good news here was that the APU revealed itself to be in great condition once the crust was cleaned off from the surface.
However, the liquid metal penetration meant that the heatsink contact plate was left with a permanent mark due to the protective surface being damaged. The technician also points out that this was an older PS5 CFI-1116 model, leading to the question of whether these older consoles are beginning to show long-term problems due to liquid metal usage.
Moreover, it is said that this particular console was over 5 years old and was used horizontally each day.

As mentioned earlier, this is far from the first time liquid metal has unexpectedly caused a PS5 being sent in for repairs. According to Modyfikator89, the technician processes as many as 10 consoles daily at his workshop, making it one of Sony’s most prone-to-damage consoles ever.
Do note that PlayStation updated the application process with the PS5 Pro to use fine grooves in the area where the liquid metal is applied. As such, the more expensive PlayStation hardware is typically less prone to liquid metal-based damage.
The base PS5, especially the older models, however, aren’t nearly as resilient when it comes to this aspect of the hardware’s internal durability.
