- On Steam, Marathon’s daily peak concurrent numbers are now down to less than 17K players.
- The game is also nowhere to be seen in Xbox’s most-played titles despite the Xbox fandom’s affinity for first-person shooters.
- Despite Bungie putting the game on a small discount recently, the extraction shooter has failed to attract players.
Bungie’s Marathon came with a lot of promise ahead of its launch. After all, many were immediately interested in the first new shooter title from the developer after Destiny 2.
Unfortunately, Marathon has only struggled since its release despite showing a few glimpses of potential. The first-person shooter appears to have failed to establish an audience for itself across all platforms, something typically seen as a death sentence for a live-service release.
Why it matters: Bungie previously expressed its intentions to support the extraction shooter for years to come, but the dwindling player base could thwart these ambitions.

Numbers from Steam show that Marathon has seen a constant decline in its player counts since release. However, the first-person shooter has seen another major decline in just the last few days.
Until April 26, the extraction shooter was still achieving daily concurrent peaks of 20,000 players or more. As of today, this is no longer the case, with the game failing to reach this figure and peaking at around 16,000 daily concurrent players.
The situation isn’t too great on other platforms either. Over on Xbox, a platform typically known to attract first-person shooter fans, Marathon is nowhere to be seen in the top 100 most-played titles.
The situation is likely similar on PlayStation, signalling a difficult time ahead for Bungie’s first new release since Destiny 2. What makes these figures so concerning is that past reports suggested Steam accounted for 70% of Marathon’s entire player base.

To remedy the situation, Marathon was recently put on sale for the first time since its launch. However, it seems this strategy has been largely ineffective in drawing more players toward the title.
Both Bungie and PlayStation are likely quite disappointed with the first-person shooter so far, especially because the latter seems to have also pushed Fairgames towards the extraction shooter route following this release.
