- Sony is inviting the remaining PS4 players over to PS5 in a new marketing campaign.
- This invitation is actively targeting gamers who wishlisted GTA 6, asking them to prepare for its release.
- The campaign appears to be international, as gamers worldwide are reportedly receiving the emails.
Sony’s PS5 sales have been slowing down significantly in recent months due to price hikes, as the console hovers around the 100 million lifetime milestone. It has also sold fewer than the PS4 over the same period, and the gap between the two has widened over time.
However, Sony appears to be cooking up a big PS5 promotion to turn things around.
New reports reveal that Sony is actively sending emails to PlayStation 4 users, asking them to switch over to PS5. The brand wants them to prepare for the GTA 6 release ahead of its expected November 19, 2026, launch.
Why it matters: The new marketing campaign could give Sony the push needed to catch up to PS4, as the ongoing memory apocalypse and price hikes have slowed this goal over time. Many PS4 users are expected to buy a PS5 when GTA 6 rolls around.
Including GTA 6 Countdown on Twitter, multiple other sources and users online have reported receiving these messages in different formats. Some users received emails, while others saw them through the console’s notification center.
This message is reportedly being sent to gamers who wishlisted GTA 6 since Sony wants them to buy a PS5 ahead of its awaited launch. The timing also coincides with the expected GTA 6 summer marketing schedule.
Regardless, the PS5 marketing campaign also targets international users, as indicated by the same message being sent to players in different languages.
This marketing campaign is likely Sony’s final major attempt to sell as many PlayStation 5 units as possible before the next generation era slowly rolls around.

Analysts have always argued that GTA 6 will help Sony sell a lot of PS5 units and move a large chunk of remaining PS4 players to the PS5. A report earlier claimed that the sudden GTA 6 delays were a ‘real blow’ to the PlayStation economy.
