- GTA 6’s NPC interaction system was reportedly prototyped as early as 2014.
- The system helped design the greet and antagonize system that later showed up in Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Rockstar also expanded its team of artists massively for GTA 6, allowing developers more creative freedom with the project.
GTA 6 is doing a number of revolutionary things, but the game’s NPCs stand out in particular. The title features hundreds of thousands of unique animations for the NPCs, giving them unique daily routines and behaviors.
Although GTA 6’s tech and systems has come together in a way that most can appreciate only recently, the team has been working on it in some form for more than a decade now.
Why it matters: Rockstar Games worked on multiple titles in the last 10 years while also supporting a big release like GTA Online.

According to Jason Schreier, GTA 6’s NPC interaction system was prototyped all the way back in 2014.
The system was first worked on by Mark Tennant, who introduced the greet and antagonize systems that would later show up in Red Dead Redemption 2. Of course, this mechanic is now being fleshed out further in GTA 6.
Elsewhere, Rockstar Games gave artists plenty of freedom with GTA 6, growing the artist team by over 10x between GTA 5 and GTA 6’s development.
Rockstar’s efforts have led to what the team considers its most dynamic game to date. Thanks to the advanced NPCs present in Leonida, GTA 6 will exhibit plenty of chaotic interactions and random moments that stick with gamers long after the credits roll.
