Sony Outlines Declining Sales Projects For FY 2026!

Story Highlight
  • Sony expects to sell fewer PS5 consoles in FY2026 due to challenges with memory shortages.
  • The company shipped 16 million consoles last Fiscal Year, and its projections now highlight a decline over this figure.
  • This is in spite of a major upcoming blockbuster like GTA 6, which will undoubtedly help PlayStation sell millions of consoles.

Sony’s PS5 has proven to be a solid successor to the PS4, achieving nearly $100 million in console sales as of Fiscal Year 2025. The console has garnered a strong library of first-party titles so far, and with rumors pointing to a return to exclusivity, the future looks quite bright for the PS5 in many ways.

However, the ongoing memory crisis continues to be troublesome for Sony’s gaming division. Following a major price hike, one that even impacted refurbished consoles, PlayStation has now confirmed that it expects declining sales in the next Fiscal Year.

Why it matters: The PS5 has faced multiple challenges throughout its lifespan. In addition to the initial console shortages and scaling problems, the latest memory price hikes highlight yet another bump in the road for PlayStation’s latest piece of hardware.

PS5 To Suffer From Worse Sales In Fiscal Year 2026

In total, PlayStation expects a 6% decline in sales revenue, led by declining hardware sales and increasing first-party sales.

On the hardware front, Sony expects to sell fewer PS5 consoles in Fiscal Year 2026 largely due to its production struggles. In its latest financial report, Sony outlined that this projection is based on the volume of memory the gaming giant can secure at reasonable prices.

The company also states that hardware profitability should stay the same despite the lower sales as a result of the higher selling price of each console. Anyhow, it comes as quite a shock that PlayStation expects to sell fewer PS5 consoles in the same year as GTA 6’s release.

For reference, 16 million PS5 consoles were sold last Fiscal Year, with Sony confirming 1.5 million shipments in the last quarter between January and March.

However, even if PS5 shipments fall below this figure next Fiscal Year as projected, the PS5 should officially surpass the 100 million sales milestone in the coming months.

Alongside Sony, others like Microsoft and Nintendo are expected to suffer from the persistent memory shortages throughout 2026. In particular, the latter could announce its first major price hike for the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.
