Nvidia Could Be Discontinuing RTX 5090 And Replacing RTX 5080 16GB With 24GB VRAM

The RTX 5080 Could Get A Whole Lot More Expensive!

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia is reportedly set to discontinue the RTX 5090 to push its RTX Pro series more.
  • The RTX 5080 16GB is also rumored to be replaced by a new 24GB VRAM version.
  • This could make the GPU even more expensive because of the higher memory.

GPU prices have reached a new astronomical high, with the top-tier Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 punching above $5,000. While AMD GPUs have also seen a price jump, it hasn’t been that high compared to Team Green’s, which is simply absurd.

Now, Nvidia seems to be shifting things a bit and is reportedly going to discontinue the RTX 5090 to push its RTX Spark GPUs forward. Additionally, the RTX 5080 16GB is rumored to be replaced by a 24GB VRAM version.

Why it matters: Since the elite-tier gaming GPU is out of reach for most people, discontinuing it to focus more on server-grade GPUs seems like a move Nvidia would make given its increased focus on data centers.

The report of the RTX 5090 being discontinued comes from multiple sources, including the reliable leaker MEGAsizeGPU. He says the company is doing it to utilize the GB202 supply solely for the company’s RTX Pro lineup.

The other rumor stems from hongxing2020, also a trusted name in the tech space. He corroborated the RTX 5090 being discontinued rumor and also suggests that the RTX 5080 16GB will be replaced with 24GB VRAM.

So, Nvidia now seems to be pushing the second-most powerful RTX 50 series GPU as the top-of-the-line, giving it the same VRAM as the 5090 had. Since VRAM is expensive, the price of the RTX 5080 could jump even higher.

Surprisingly, the RTX 5080 prices have been somewhat reasonable compared to the other GPUs. It has been selling for around $1,500, which is still not too high for its MSRP, but that could change with the alleged new model.

What are your thoughts on Nvidia discontinuing the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 16GB? Do you think this is a good idea? Let us know your opinions in the comments or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forum.
