85% of PS5 Games Were Bought Digitally in FY2025 Q4 — Could PS6 Go Fully Digital?

The Next PlayStation Might Completely Skip The Disc Drive!

Story Highlight
  • Sony’s recent earnings report revealed 85% of PS5 games were sold digitally.
  • This suggests that the upcoming PS6 could be digital, and without a disc drive.
  • This could help keep the cost down with the memory crisis still at large.

While the ownership debate of digital games remains a huge debate, digital game sales continue to mount every year. As of 2026, most of the games on consoles are digital sales as physical disc sales become more and more redundant.

Sony recently released PlayStation’s earnings report, according to which 85% PS5 games were bought digitally in FY25 Q4. This leads to the question of whether, with the PS6 approaching, Sony could completely transition to digital.

Why it matters: Due to the memory crisis, console prices have already been bumped up. As most game sales are digital already, shipping PS6 without a disc drive could act as a cost-saving measure.

85% PS5 game sales in Q4 FY25 were digital

According to Sony’s earnings report, 85% game sales were digital, while physical sales were only 15%. This hints at an upcoming all-digital future, where the PS6 could likely be sold without a disc drive out of the box.

While this is still quite speculative at this point, Sony could technically do this to keep the costs down. And it’s not like they aren’t doing it already. The PS5 Pro is digital only, and you buy a detachable disc drive separately.

PS6 could be a completely digital console

A leaker recently revealed that the PS6 is being designed to be cheaper than the PS5 Pro, so no disc drive could be one of the contributing factors. However, the final price and release will depend heavily on the memory situation.
