Crimson Desert With Co-Op Sounds Like A Dream!

Story Highlight
  • An ambitious co-op mod for Crimson Desert is already in the works, as early testing shows promise.
  • A lot of the basic mechanics already work, but elements like enemy syncing across both players remain to be solved.
  • The mod is a work in progress and remains in early development.

Crimson Desert has been among the most impressive RPG releases in over a decade, winning multiple awards and setting a whole new standard for the genre. Demand for a sprawling multiplayer or a simple co-op mode for it has only grown since the DLC reveal.

The community has taken matters into its own hands, as an ambitious co-op multiplayer mode for Crimson Desert is already in the works. It’s in early development, but the project shows a lot of potential during its first testing.

Why it matters: Crimson Desert’s modding scene is growing at an absurd rate, with many promising mods launching recently. A co-op mode could also bring a swath of new players to the RPG, as Pearl Abyss continues exploring an official multiplayer mode.

I'm building a co-op multiplayer mod for Crimson Desert. Here's an early test with a friend

Redditor u/No-Context2224 announced the monumental project in the r/CrimsonDesert subreddit. The lone modder shared a random clip from the first test, showing that the basic co-op mechanics are already taking shape.

Both players can already see each other run, move, jump, glide, and the rest of the moveset. Attacks, skills, and equipment changes also show up on the other player. Additionally, shared damage on enemies already works but remains in experimental stages.

There are still a lot of problems. Like, each player still has their own world, which means enemies won’t be in the same spot for both of them. The horses also don’t show up correctly on the other player. World interactions also only show up for the player performing them.

The modder is already working to fix these issues. It also simply connects through Steam, so there’s no port forwarding needed.

Pearl Abyss has also been exploring official co-op for Crimson Desert, but the studio had to downgrade the visuals to make it work. We might see an official implementation in the future as it continues to receive updates.
