Over 70% of id Software was gutted as part of the Xbox layoffs, with an ex-employee even arguing that the studio lost decades’ worth of knowledge in the process. Gamers dubbed these firings ‘downright pathetic,’ as the future of the remaining studio appears to be grim.
However, the studio downplayed these layoffs in a new statement, confirming that it is now about the same size as it was during the Doom 2016 days. An insider elaborates on the statement and claims that id Software is already working on a new Doom project.
Why it matters: The development of a new Doom after layoffs affirms that id Software will continue to function independently just under a more streamlined structure.
Reputable industry insider Tom Warren says on Twitter that a new Doom game is in the works, but it is currently in the early stages. Additionally, id Software has not become a support studio after the layoffs and will continue to function normally.
id Software also claimed something similar in its latest statement on Twitter.
We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016).

id Software will continue to work on the great games and tech it is known for, even with a much smaller team across its multiple offices. Therefore, there are no fears that id Software will switch to UE5 for its new Doom game.
We’re going to keep building the great games and tech that have defined us for the past 35 years.
Although nothing else about the new entry is currently known at the moment. It could either be another prequel or continue the mainline story in the franchise.
However, the project might take several years before we hear anything official about it.
