Expect To See Many More Remakes From Ubisoft In The Future!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has been a huge success for Ubisoft.
  • The French publisher states that remakes are cheaper to produce and don’t need as much marketing as new titles.
  • Ubisoft believes these re-releases can even outperform major new titles.

Ubisoft’s first major remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, has seen unprecedented success already. Not only has this re-release become the series’ best-rated entry in over a decade, but it has also reinvigorated player interest in the franchise.

As the remake continues to reach new heights, Ubisoft has become more serious about the prospect of remakes. The gaming giant now believes remakes can be more profitable than new releases.

Why it matters: Remakes have become incredibly popular in the modern era, and seemingly everyone has jumped on the hype train, with Ubisoft being the latest to arrive.

Black Flag Resynced
Black Flag Resynced Is A Smash Hit

Ubisoft was recently asked to comment on the profit margins of a game like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Responding to the question, CFO Frederick Duguet noted that profit margins for remakes are quite attractive.

He noted that remakes are expected to succeed from the beginning due to existing love for the original title. As per the CFO, remakes are also cheaper to produce since developers can reuse existing assets for these projects.

Similarly, marketing costs aren’t nearly as high in the case of remakes since players already have a perception built around the original release. This makes remakes quite a bit more cost-effective compared to brand new releases.

We expect this one to deliver superior financial performance.

As Ubisoft puts it, the economics between a new title and a remake are completely different, and this is why ambitious re-releases can often end up more profitable than new titles.

Comparing Ubisoft’s latest titles, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was likely cheaper to produce than Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

As such, the French gaming giant seems to now believe that such re-releases have the potential to outperform brand-new titles. This is exactly why more remakes are now in the works from the team.
