Ex-Rockstar Dev Says GTA 6 Unlikely To Aim For 60FPS On Consoles

Story Highlight
  • Former Rockstar Technical Director John Ricchio expects GTA 6 to target 30FPS on consoles.
  • Ricchio pointed to the game’s visual complexity and the trade-offs required to reach 60FPS.
  • The game is expected to stick with target even on the more powerful PS5 Pro.

GTA 6 is expected to push current-generation consoles hard, with Rockstar Games building its most ambitious open world yet around Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

However, players hoping for a locked 60FPS experience on consoles may need to lower their expectations. According to former Rockstar North technical director John Ricchio, GTA 6 is unlikely to hit 60FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why it matters: A 30FPS target would allow Rockstar Games to dedicate more console resources to GTA 6’s world simulation, NPC density, physics and visual detail.

Speaking with Kiwi Talkz about the game’s potential performance targets, Ricchio suggested Rockstar will probably favor a stable 30FPS presentation instead.

The former Rockstar Technical Director said he does not have inside knowledge of GTA 6’s current development. However, his experience working with the team leads him to believe the game’s scope will make 60FPS unfavorable.

I don’t think they’ll be able to get 60 FPS.

Of course, the prediction is unlikely to shock longtime Rockstar fans. Many had already expected GTA 6 to stick to 30FPS, with analysts even expressing skepticism at the thought of 60FPS on PS5 Pro.

GTA 6 is clearly going for heavy crowds and incredible open-world details, all of which would push the CPU hard. Because current-gen consoles are limited by their CPUs, 60FPS seems like an unlikely goal for now.

GTA 6 Comes Out In November

Rockstar Games could still offer multiple graphics settings, including a lower-resolution mode on consoles. In particular, the game could target 40FPS on the PS5 Pro. However, it seems unlikely that a 60FPS mode will arrive before the game lands on next-gen consoles or PC.
