More Than 30% of Wolverine Sales Came From Physical Copies

Physical Game Demand Is Still Strong As Shown By Wolverine!

Story Highlight
  • Marvel’s Wolverine sold more than 30% of its copies through physical discs.
  • It is also said that half of all European sales came from discs.
  • Other games like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Silent Hill: Townfall highlight a similar physical-to-digital sales split.

PlayStation’s physical disc cancellation for 2028 has raised more than a few eyebrows, especially since recent evidence shows that there is still quite a lot of demand for physical media.

Games like Resident Evil Requiem and Astro Bot previously sold nearly 50% of all units via physical discs in various regions. The newly released Marvel’s Wolverine appears to have followed a similar trajectory, selling over 30% of its copies as discs.

Why it matters: Many enthusiasts argue that physical games are still important for the games industry, and Marvel’s Wolverine appears to reinforce that this is indeed the case.

According to Ampere Analytics via The Game Business, around 30% of Marvel’s Wolverine sales came from the physical version of the game.

Interestingly, the European data shows that discs accounted for 51% of all sales, largely thanks to countries like France, with a prominent physical disc presence to this day. Other games like Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Blood of the Dawnwalker, and Silent Hill: Townfall also showed a strong physical-to-digital split.

Of course, this data once again makes a strong case for PlayStation continuing to support physical games, something the gaming giant may be considering at the moment. PlayStation believes that most people will simply switch to digital purchases but games as new as Marvel’s Wolverine favoring physical copies quite a bit might make this difficult.

It will also be interesting to see whether Marvel’s Wolverine maintains a similar physical-to-digital ratio when it comes to sales as the game ages. Typically, both physical and digital versions lose their value over time, though the former is much quicker to receive permanent price cuts.
