Why Games Should Borrow Batman Arkham’s Freeflow Combat Again

Story Highlight
  • Just a few years back, Batman Arkham’s free-flow combat was being copied by nearly everyone in the industry.
  • With the industry currently focused on tropes like RPG mechanics and Souls-like combat, seeing this gameplay style returning would be a major breath of fresh air.
  • Multiple superhero titles are lined up for the future, setting the stage for the return of Batman Arkham’s free-flow battles.

Rocksteady set new trends and raised standards across the industry after Batman Arkham Asylum’s debut many years ago. Beyond the attention to detail, Batman’s portrayal, and excellent traversal, the series immediately became popular for its combat.

Batman Arkham Asylum saw the caped crusader swiftly moving from enemy to enemy, delivering powerful and crushing blows, topped off with an incredibly satisfying sense of fluidity and momentum.

The industry quickly caught on and began to adapt Rocksteady’s free-flow combat system for different games. At one point, the Batman Arkham combat was everywhere, and it was difficult to avoid running into titles without this gameplay style.

However, just as quickly as the trend caught on, it seems to have vanished altogether. While it’s true that the industry suffered from an oversaturation of games using this melee combat, perhaps it’s time to bring it back.

Why it matters: Studios have avoided this style of gameplay for long enough, setting the stage for a grand return that capitalizes on Rocksteady’s excellent foundations.

Games Taking Direct Inspiration From Batman Arkham

The Amazing Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man Delivered More Grounded Gameplay Similar To That of Batman’s

Because Rocksteady’s work on the Batman Arkham franchise was so good, it was easy to see why everyone rushed to take inspiration from the system or, in some cases, outright copy it.

Also, it should be noted that many credit 2004’s Spider-Man 2 for Batman Arkham Asylum’s combat. Like Batman, Spider-Man could counter enemies with the press of a single button, but his unique acrobatics meant that the character dodged attacks instead of countering when the button was pressed.

The fact that Rocksteady took clear inspiration from Spider-Man is quite ironic when considering the fact that things came full circle in 2012 when developer Beenox chose to stick with (pun intended) Batman’s counter-based formula for The Amazing Spider-Man.

The same mechanics returned in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but this was far from the only Marvel IP using this system. Just one year prior, Captain America: Super Soldier had already dabbled in Batman’s free-flow combat, and to the developer’s credit, the system was quite fitting for Captain America.

Movie tie-in releases, while fun, were never known for their creativity, so it was easy to excuse the developers for falling back on something that had already worked in the past. However, various other AAA releases, including many of Warner Bros’ future titles, quickly adapted Batman Arkham’s melee systems into different combat styles.

Mad Max showed what would happen if Batman stopped pulling his punches and became a ruthless killing machine with plenty of gore to boot. On the other hand, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War highlighted just how well the combat worked with a sword.

Even Ubisoft jumped on the bandwagon at one point, infusing Assassin’s Creed counter-based combat system with a familiar sense of free-flow momentum in Assassin’s Creed 3 and 4. At the time, I certainly didn’t mind.

It’s Time For A Comeback

Souls-Likes Are Thriving, But The Genre Is Quickly Becoming Saturated | Image via Tech4Gamers

Perhaps the biggest compliment for Rocksteady’s work is how well the Batman Arkham series’ combat translated to other games. Whether it be for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man or the Orc slaying Talion, the combat’s fluidity and accessibility seemed to always fit any and every type of game.

However, it didn’t take long for fatigue to set in. I remember spending hours just beating up street thugs in Batman Arkham City and killing guards in Assassin’s Creed 3, but even I understood that the industry was too reliant on this type of gameplay.

Something had to change, and it definitely did. Unfortunately, this change has meant that you’d be hard-pressed to find similarly satisfying gameplay in modern titles, with most AAA studios finding FromSoftware’s Souls-like approach more appealing today.

In my opinion, this is the perfect time to mix things up and return to this gameplay. The biggest reason I hope to see developers bring back Batman Arkham’s free-flow gameplay is the fact that modern melee systems lack the simplicity that Rocksteady pioneered nearly two decades ago.

I’m tired of seeing obligatory RPG and Souls-like elements in every other release. Skill trees, gear, and stat modifiers have become all too common, and even Rocksteady’s highly disappointing Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has fallen into the same trap, albeit with a looter-shooter makeover.

Both Avengers and Gotham Knights had similar problems, and neither felt half as satisfying to play as Batman Arkham Asylum or any of the other entries in the franchise. This problem isn’t limited to superhero games since stiff combat has practically become standard for most releases today.

Hope For The Future?

Warner Bros Wonder Woman
Free-Flow Fighting Would Be The Perfect Match For Wonder Woman

A slew of superhero games are coming in the future, and I don’t think anybody would mind Black Panther’s combat bringing back familiar counter-based gameplay that everyone loved just a few years ago.

In many ways, seeing that style of gameplay returning would be nostalgic and fresh. I can also see Monolith Productions falling back on Shadow of Mordor’s pillars for Wonder Woman, especially since the gameplay would be quite fitting for her arsenal. This is also something leaks have already alluded to.

Perhaps Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s failure will prompt Batman’s return to glory in some form, serving as the catalyst for Rocksteady’s signature free-flow gameplay’s return in the industry.

Astro Bot Developers Have High Hopes For Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

Story Highlight
  • Intergalactic, Naughty Dog’s recent IP was bombarded with negative reception as soon as it was revealed.
  • However, Astro Bot developers are pretty excited about the game, as Naughty Dog is an award-winning studio.
  • Astro Bot’s  Director and Producer Nicolas Doucet has also expressed his excitement, saying that the “last 10 minutes of The Game Awards were perfect for PlayStation’s future.”

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was a surprise reveal at The Game Awards by 2024 one of the most beloved developers, Naughty Dog. No one expected this reveal at the very end of TGA, but it didn’t really receive a positive reception from the fandom

Its YouTube trailer received more dislikes than Concord’s. Fans have also criticized Naughty Dog heavily, roasting the developer in a recent holiday tweet.

Also, the game’s lead may have upset some fans, but they shouldn’t focus on such matters; they should enjoy the game for what it is. While the actress could have taken a better approach, fans were targeting her, which was pretty wrong, too.

Despite the backlash, many fans are looking forward to the IP. Team Asobi seems to be among those fans, as a lot of the developers recently expressed their excitement for the title

Why it matters: Although Naughty Dog’s decision regarding Intergalactic’s lead may be questionable, it is a veteran developer and should be judged based on the final product.

Naughty Dog’s Upcoming IP Has Sparked Some Massie Controversies With Just A Reveal Trailer

In an interview with Famitsu, many Team Asobi employees showed their excitement for Naughty Dog’s upcoming game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Astro Bot’s Director and Producer, Nicolas Doucet, was as surprised as the fandom. He had no idea the award-winning developer would announce its new IP at TGA 2024.

We didn’t know about it either, so we watched the trailer for “Intergalactic” and forgot everything (laughs). We were watching it from a gamer’s perspective, so we were like, “Wow, that’s amazing!”

He further said, “The last 10 minutes of the event were perfect for the future of PlayStation”. More developers from the studio expressed their excitement as well. Lead Sound Designer Junko Sano said, “It made me feel excited, didn’t it?”

Lead Game Designer Hiroaki Yatoku talked to Naughty Dog after the event and bonded with them. Yatoku also revealed that the developer was cheered and happy for the Astro Bot winning the Game of the Year Award.

The game seems to have received a lot of love from the other developers, which can help boost Naughty Dog’s morale a lot. Fans should also wait for some more reveals to actually judge the game, as right now, there isn’t much known about it.

Xbox’s Multiplatform Strategy Points To A Promising Future, Analyst Predicts

Story Highlight
  • Matt Piscatella sees Xbox’s strategy of releasing games on multiple platforms as a positive sign for its future.
  • While Xbox console sales trail PlayStation, its financials are strong due to multiplatform releases.
  • While PlayStation has begun releasing some titles on other platforms, Xbox has been much more active in this approach.

Even though Xbox has faced difficult challenges recently, there are positive signs for its future. While the Xbox Series X|S sales have not yet matched Sony’s PlayStation 5, Xbox’s multiplatform strategy may help strengthen its position in the gaming market.

According to Mat Piscatella, director of games at Circana, the brand is moving toward a more promising future. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Piscatella pointed out that Xbox’s shift to expand beyond traditional console gaming puts itself in a strong position for a comeback in 2025.

Why it matters: Microsoft’s move away from a console-focused strategy is a big change. The company is now working to expand the Xbox brand to reach a wider audience, with the multiplatform strategy playing a key role.

Xbox
Piscatella believes continuing this multiplatform strategy is key to Xbox’s future growth and success.

A surprising factor in Xbox’s recent progress is its success on competing platforms like PlayStation. Piscatella noted that Xbox games are appearing more often on PlayStation sales charts.

By expanding the reach of their games to other platforms, Xbox is continuing to grow, even when console sales are down.

You look at like the PlayStation sales chart, you see a lot of Microsoft on there. You look at their results in their earnings reports, and you go, okay, that looks pretty darn good… You look at it that way and the future is actually looking pretty bright.

-Matt Piscatella

One of the most talked-about parts of Xbox’s strategy is its decision to move away from exclusive titles. While many people believe this is a double-edged sword, it fits with Microsoft’s larger goal of making Xbox a brand that succeeds beyond its consoles.

Piscatella sees this as a natural step, even though it challenges the usual idea of gaming exclusives. Xbox’s success on PlayStation is why the analyst believes the future is bright for Microsoft’s console, even if console sales are slower.

Xbox Exclusive Games
In March 2024, 4 of the top 10 pre-orders on the PlayStation store were Xbox titles.

By July 2024, the PlayStation 5 had sold over 60 million units, taking up 67% of the market. In comparison, the Xbox Series X|S had sold around 29 million units, holding 33% of the market.

Meanwhile, PlayStation has also begun exploring other platforms with games like Helldivers 2. However, Xbox has been much more active in this area.

More Xbox games will eventually land on PlayStation. Therefore, Piscatella believes that continuing to offer games across different platforms will be crucial for Xbox’s ongoing growth.

Do you believe that Xbox’s multiplatform strategy will work out? Feel free to drop your thoughts in the comments, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Hideo Kojima’s OD & Physint Was Stalled In 2024, Development To Resume In 2025

Story Highlight
  • The development of Kojima’s upcoming OD and Physint has been stalled this year due to SAG-AFTRA strikes.
  • Hideo Kojima hopes to continue the scanning, casting, and filming process for both games in 2025.
  • OD is expected to be a horror entry, but almost nothing is known about Physint yet.

Kojima Productions is working on games that want to bring innovation to the industry. The studio’s head honcho, Hideo Kojima, has even expressed interest in developing titles that aliens would find cool later on. So it’s no surprise that gamers are highly interested in the upcoming Death Stranding sequel.

However, little to nothing is known about the status of his other two projects, but he’s finally provided an update.

Hideo Kojima clarifies that OD and Physint are in the earlier stages of development, where the scanning and casting process is done. But recent SAG-AFTRA strikes have thrown a wrench in the plans.

Why it matters: Hideo Kojima’s new announcement clarifies that SAG-AFTRA strikes have continued to affect the development of games in the industry, potentially delaying OD and Physint for a long time.

Hideo Kojima revealed that development for OD and Physint has been suspended due to this year's SAG-AFTRA Strike.
Hideo Kojima revealed that development for OD and Physint has been suspended due to this year’s SAG-AFTRA Strike.

In a new Twitter post looking back at 2024, Hideo Kojima says that OD has had its actor and environment scanning done already. The rest of the development—along with casting for Physint—had to be suspended because of industry-wide SAG-AFTRA strikes.

He hopes to continue working on both of these games next year. However, the update suggests that we won’t hear much about them for the rest of 2025.

OD is presumably a horror title being developed in partnership with Jordan Peele. Meanwhile, Physint is an upcoming action espionage game in collaboration with Sony.

Overdose
Kojima has described Overdose as a completely new form of media that we’ve never seen.

All in all, Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding 2 is set to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025. However, it could also appear on Xbox and PC, as per recent speculations.

Do you think Hideo Kojima’s upcoming projects will be able to earn as much recognition as the Death Stranding franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

Sony Helped AMD With Development of FSR 4 & Future UDNA Architecture For 2026 GPUs and PS6

Story Highlight
  • Sony and AMD collaborated on the development of PS5 Pro’s Project Amethyst, with Sony playing a bigger role than initially thought.
  • Sony influenced the development of FSR 4 and UDNA architecture by providing AMD with PSSR technology.
  • UDNA architecture to be used in the upcoming PS6.

The official revelation we saw from Mark Cerny about the technical details of PS5 Pro, the hybrid architecture of its GPU, and the so-called Project Amethyst has a new chapter.

While AMD creates the CPU and GPU architecture to include them together within the APUs that Sony asks for according to its needs, now we know other data about both, and it has to do with FSR 4 and the new UDNA architecture. Is Sony more involved than we think in what is coming to market?

Sony’s pace is not being kept up by Microsoft, which seems a little lost with Xbox hardware. The Japanese have made a big splash with the PS5 Pro, which is disliked for its price, but it is a leap in performance that is more than interesting for gamers – in some games. The union between the Japanese company and its direct partner was just a start which will go even further.

Sony’s Role in FSR 4 & UDNA

New information is on the table after learning about Project Amethys. AMD and Sony worked together in a way that was not thought of until now because although everything seemed to be heading towards the fact that AMD was the one who designed PSSR at the request of the Japanese and once created, Sony optimized it based on FSR 4, the reality is different.

This reality is more complex AS AMD confirms the fact that Sony was the one who developed PSSR and sent it to Lisa Su with a curious objective: to help the Red Camp with FSR 4. That is, it is exactly the opposite of what was understood in the presentation of Project Amethyst.

In other words, Sony is helping AMD more with everything related to FSR 4 than the other way around, even though AMD has spent more than a year designing this new software for their GPUs.

UDNA Was Born With Sony’s Suggestion

AMD UDNA

AMD’s strategy of splitting architectures into servers and gaming was not efficient. NVIDIA doesn’t use this strategy, since it has a central pillar that it then optimizes for the RTX and HGX as systems. Lisa Su’s team is going to unify the two architectures again in what they have called UDNA, and here Sony has had a large part of the responsibility.

The arguments are simple: more than half of AMD’s gaming revenue comes from the APUs sold to Sony for its PS5 and PS5 Pro. Therefore, Sony has a lot of weight and decision-making power over AMD. Given that NVIDIA currently has a 90% share in graphics, that 10% of sales left to AMD is practically a reference point and they survive thanks to the consoles.

So having a common architecture for servers, graphics, and APUs is the right way to reduce costs, given what Sony is bringing to the table, not only with FSR 4 through PSSR but in terms of ideas for hardware and software in general. Hence the inclusion of CNN for UDNA, in principle, for 2026.

To sum up, we could say that Sony is one of the main drivers of AMD software and hardware in search of more power, more capabilities, and lower costs in the past few projects. AMD cannot be satisfied with several design branches for each sector, it opted for the NVIDIA path and we will see the fruits in just over a year when PS6 will most certainly have UDNA architecture, we will see if it is first generation or second.

Nintendo Is The Only Major Gaming Company Without Layoffs In 2024

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo has avoided layoffs over the past few years, except for contractors in America.
  • The gaming giant believes retaining its core talent is more necessary than anything else, helping it avoid a poor situation.
  • This is a stark contrast to every other company in the industry, which suffered massive job cuts in 2023 and 2024.

The gaming industry continues to navigate a challenging landscape as 2024 draws to a close. With nearly 25,000 layoffs over the last several months, developers and publishers have undergone multiple changes.

Gaming giants like EA, Ubisoft, PlayStation, and Xbox have also been impacted by the layoffs. However, one particular company seems to have weathered the storm spectacularly. Despite the prevalent threat of layoffs, Nintendo has escaped the last two years unscathed.

Why it matters: Nintendo has admitted that the cost of producing games has grown exponentially in recent years. As such, the gaming giant has been similarly impacted by these changes.

Nintendo Switch 2 Dock 4K 30 FPS
The Switch Could Outsell The PS2 To Make A New Record

The likes of Embracer Group had it far worse than others, though job cuts were far too common. However, Nintendo is nowhere to be found on the list of giants impacted by job cuts. In fact, the company faced next to no layoffs in 2023 and 2024.

The following were the companies impacted most by this trend over the last two years:

  • Embracer Group (7,890 employees)
  • Unity Technologies (2,900 employees)
  • Microsoft Gaming (2,880 employees)
  • Sony (1,475 employees)
  • EA (1,470 employees)
  • Ubisoft (1,021 employees)
  • Epic Games (870 employees)
  • Take-Two Interactive (630 employees)
  • Riot Games (562 employees)
  • Sega (438 employees)

Nintendo of America did let go of 120 contractors earlier this year, with this move expected to enhance the company’s global development initiatives. Fortunately, this was the last time fans would hear about employees departing the Japanese gaming giant.

Since contractors are typically expected to leave a company at the end of their contractual period eventually, this situation is hardly comparable to the mass layoffs from other giants.

Perhaps the company avoided a similar fate as PlayStation or Xbox by following the late Satoru Iwata’s philosophy. For context, Iwata opted to cut his salary in half after the Wii U’s devastating failure in 2013 to avoid job cuts.

Nintendo Switch
The Switch Successor Is Expected To Make An Appearance Next Month

The former CEO was confident in his staff and believed in retaining talent over anything else. It seems his core ideas are still prevalent throughout the company, putting it above the competition when it comes to this subject.

It also helps that Nintendo has seen major successes like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. film recently. Elsewhere, the Switch continues to sell like hotcakes, ensuring a steady revenue stream for the company.

New GTA 5 Mod Adds Gorgeous Liberty City Recreation To The Game

Story Highlight
  • GTA 4’s Liberty City has been imported into GTA 5 with a new mod.
  • This mod also brings over the interiors, pedestrians, and vehicles from Liberty City.
  • Fans continue to demand a GTA 4 remaster despite Rockstar Games ignoring the title.

GTA 5 has been Rockstar Games’ cash cow for more than a decade now, bringing in millions of sales and revenue worth billions of dollars. The title has also received plenty of additional content, but no love has been shown to the single-player side of the title since its release.

Fortunately, the game has a dedicated modding community. This community’s latest achievement comes in the form of a gorgeous recreation of Liberty City, adding a whole new dynamic to the open world.

Why it matters: Rockstar Games reportedly scrapped a GTA 4 remaster in the past, disappointing fans who hoped to see the title shine on modern platforms.

The mod in question is dubbed Liberty City Preservation Project and aims to do exactly what the title implies. This project has been in the works for a while and is now available to download through the developers’ Discord link.

It effectively imports the map, vehicles, interiors, and pedestrians from GTA 4 into GTA 5. The mod even brings over radio stations in an attempt to recapture Liberty City’s meticulous atmosphere.

Paired with GTA 5’s gorgeous visuals and art style, the Liberty City Preservation Project effectively delivers the long-anticipated GTA 4 remaster that fans have longed for. Unfortunately, this mod’s quality has also become a cause for concern.

Liberty City Has Always Been A Fan-Favorite

Fans are worried about Take-Two or Rockstar Games potentially shutting the mod down. The team may have intentions to remaster GTA 4 following Red Dead Redemption’s recent successful re-release, so the mod could become a target of legal action.

Nonetheless, fans have been thoroughly impressed by the modding team’s work. The concept of traversing Liberty City with GTA 5’s characters and gameplay mechanics certainly sounds intriguing, making this mod immensely popular already.

After The Massive Backlash Naughty Dog Artist Draws Eve From Stellar Blade Again But Better

Story Highlight
  • Naughty Dog Artist recently drew Eve from Stellar Blade but was called out immediately for making her ugly.
  • Due to the massive backlash, the artist had to draw the character again.
  • Stellar Blade’s official Twitter account posted the new art, which fans seem to like much better than the previous one.

Naughty Dog has been under massive fire lately, mainly due to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The game’s trailer on YouTube far exceeded the dislikes of Concord, the biggest failure in gaming history.

Interegalactic’s main lead has also sparked some controversies, making the matter even worse. Following that, the concept designer of Naughty Dog, Nam Hyoung Taek, received massive backlash for drawing Eve from Stellar Blade as “ugly and manly.”

Now, following the backlash, the artist redrew Eve, and this time, she looks better

Why it matters: Eve is one of the most good-looking female characters in video games, so making her ugly in concept art made many fans furious.

The official Twitter account of Stellar Blade has posted the new art and thanked the artist for drawing Eve again. The developer claims that it welcomes any type of fan art, even the previous one that Nam Hyoung Taek made.

Artist Nam Hyoung Taek has once again drawn Eve for us. We’re very grateful for this, but we always welcome fan art in the style of the previous one.

-Stellar Blade Twitter Account

The developer further supports Hyoung by mentioning that it isn’t uncommon for fan art to have more of the artist’s style than the original. However, the fandom might not agree with this sentiment, as the backlash on previous concept art from Hyoung is enough proof of that.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Review Bombed On Steam After Becoming Unplayable For Windows 11 Users

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins has been review bombed on Steam recently after getting game-breaking bugs.
  • The latest Microsoft 24H2 Windows 11 update is the cause behind Origins becoming unplayable for many players.
  • The only way to play and avoid getting the game bricked is to roll back Windows 11 to an earlier version.

Despite the change in formula, Assassin’s Creed Origins is one of the most popular entries in the franchise. It innovated the series to new horizons and adopted many RPG mechanics, splitting fans into two groups.

However, this 7-year-old game has now been review-bombed on Steam after enjoying positive reviews in the past. The sudden bombardment is due to the game becoming unplayable for many players because of bugs like black screens, crashes, and freezes.

Why it matters: Assassin’s Creed Origins getting bricked because of a Windows update is another massive blow to the franchise’s reputation, which has already suffered because of many recent controversies.

Ubisoft Not Addressing The Issue
Ubisoft Has Not Addressed The Issue For A Long Time Now | Source: Steam

Ubisoft is yet again under fire, as many reviews have suggested the developer has been aware of these issues but hasn’t fixed them yet. Microsoft is also to be blamed, as these issues started due to the 23H2 update.

These negative reviews began when the game went on sale for 90% during the holiday season. Many new players poured into the popular Ubisoft experience, only to meet with game-breaking bugs that rendered the title useless.

The only good workaround for this dilemma is for users to roll back to the Windows 23H2 update, which will completely remove these glitches from Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Overall, the latest Microsoft shenanigans have affected many other titles, including Cyberpunk 2077, Apex Legends, COD: MW2, and Forza Horizon 5.

Do you think Assassin’s Creed Origins can recover its stolen reputation after Microsoft fixes these game-breaking bugs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

Konami’s Stocks Skyrocketed By 96% In 2024 Thanks To Silent Hill 2 Remake

Story Highlight
  • Silent Hill 2 Remake’s success has seen Konami stocks grow significantly this year.
  • The Remake received praise from everyone after underwhelming trailers.
  • Konami is heading into 2025 strongly with MGS3 Remake, which is very close to launch.

Konami has had a great year, largely due to the release of Silent Hill 2 Remake. The company has seen massive growth, and a report claims that its stocks skyrocketed by almost 96% in 2024

When the first Silent Hill 2 Remake trailer dropped, many people were skeptical. However, the Bloober Team managed to turn things around, delivering an excellent experience

Why it matters: With a massive increase in its stocks, Konami is heading into 2025 strongly, with Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake reportedly closer than ever to its release.

Konami Stocks
Konami stock values increased by 96% in 2024

According to Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games, Konami saw a growth of 95.97% in 2024. Other Japanese studios also had some solid stats, and they saw their stock values increase quite a bit this year.

Konami has been somewhat lackluster in the last few years. When Silent Hill 2’s development was given to the Bloober Team instead of its in-house team, most people assumed this would not favor the studio.

While the studio didn’t have too many releases this year either, Silent Hill 2 has taken it over. Rumors suggest that the studio is also looking to remake the original Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3

Konami also released Silent Hill: The Short Message for PS5, a free-to-play game aiming to capture new audiences. In addition, the company also launched Contra: Operation Galuga and Castlevania Dominus Collection, but Silent Hill 2 Remake was the flagship release.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what Konami does from here. With Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake on the horizon, fans hope the studio has done an equally good job with the title as the Bloober Team did with Silent Hill 2.

These Are The Only GPUs I Look Forward To From RTX 50-Series

Story Highlight
  • The RTX 5090 will likely offer a big performance jump and decent specs uplift, which has excited me.
  • The RTX 5070, 5070 Ti, and 5080 don’t look like much of an upgrade over their predecessors, which is rather disappointing.
  • The budget-friendly RTX 5060 Ti might finally fix its predecessors’ mistakes and be another worthy card.

The reveal and launch of Nvidia’s next generation of graphics cards, which is based on the “Blackwell” architecture, is right around the corner. As usual, Nvidia will start with the most powerful graphics cards, and I’m only looking forward to one of them, which is the RTX 5090. Other than that, the RTX 5060 Ti has my attention as well from the RTX 50-series lineup.

Why The RTX 5090

The answer is rather simple as to why I’m looking forward to the RTX 5090 from Nvidia’s RTX 50-series GPU lineup. After witnessing the performance uplift of the RTX 4090 from the RTX 3090, I’m even more hyped about what the RTX 5090 could bring to the table. As of now, we have seen multiple rumors and leaks about the specs and performance enhancements that these new GPUs would offer. The RTX 5090 will most likely be offering a 33% improvement in its core specifications compared to its predecessor. For instance, the RTX 5090 will feature a much larger 32 GB of GDDR7 VRAM as compared to the 24 GB of the RTX 4090 and 21,760 GPU cores against the 16,384 cores of the RTX 4090.

RTX 5090/5080 Leaked Specs
RTX 5090/5080 Leaked Specs

Moreover, it will have almost double the memory bus of 512 bits, and the same is the case with the bandwidth. Another interesting thing that excites me is its power efficiency; previously, rumors were saying that it would have a default TDP of 600W. However, according to the recent leak by the trusted Nvidia leaker “kopite7kimi,” we could see a slight decrease there, which will most likely drop the TDP to 550W. So, considering this new TDP in mind, the RTX 5090 will not only be the most powerful consumer-grade card but also very efficient.

RTX 5090 TDP
RTX 5090 TDP

Besides this, the recent reveal trailer of CDPR’s The Witcher 4 was rendered on an unannounced RTX graphics card. It’s safe to assume that it was the RTX 5090 because of the hefty VRAM and other specs it holds that are capable of rendering such high-quality cinematics.

The Middle Options Are Garbage

For now, I’m not excited about any of the middle offerings, which are the RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5080. The primary reason is the lack of any meaningful upgrade in terms of core specs and also the potential price hike, which will make them more expensive compared to the launch price of their predecessors. This rumor comes from a trusted leaker and YouTuber, “Moore’s Law is Dead.” Especially when we look at the RTX 5070 and 5080, we’ve entered an era where the larger the VRAM capacity, the better, and the RTX 5070 only comes with 12 GB of VRAM.

This is quite absurd considering that it’s going to cost more, as well as the fact that even a $250 card like the Intel ARC B580 packs 12 GB VRAM. It seems like Nvidia is doing it on purpose so they can sell their “Super” class cards for a much higher price later on. Just like that, the RTX 5080 also shows no increment when it comes to offering a high VRAM capacity and is stuck with the same 16 GB. However, there’s a slight increase in the GPU cores, which are 10,752 in comparison with the 9,728 cores of its predecessor.

For a card this expensive and powerful, 20 GB should be the bare minimum as per the Triple-A games’ requirements at 4K resolution. Another disappointing thing here is its power consumption, which has received a bigger increase (400W vs. 320W of RTX 4080) than its hardware specs. It seems that Nvidia is trying to rely more and more on its AI-powered tech, DLSS4, and Frame-Gen, to make up for the cut-down specs.

Another Worthy Card

The second card from the RTX 50 series that I’m looking forward to seeing is the RTX 5060 Ti. It is said to feature 16 GB of GDDR7 VRAM with a 128-bit bus; this isn’t the first time a 60-tier card from Nvidia has gotten a larger chunk of VRAM than a 70-tier one. Moreover, the card will also feature a full x16 bus interface, unlike the RTX 4060 Ti, which had an x8 bus interface.

Something To Look Forward To

While making a number of bad cards, Nvidia sure releases some worthy ones too. Currently, the RTX 5090 and RTX 5060 Ti are among those, which I’ll be looking forward to launching next year. Nvidia needs to get its thoughts together and stop relying so much on the upscaling tech. And launch some actual upgraded hardware across all budget sections, especially in the mid-range one.
