Elder Scrolls 4 Remastered was shadow-dropped by Xbox, which surprised the fandom.
Despite being shadow-dropped, it has become the 3rd best-selling title of 2025 in the US already.
It is just behind Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and Monster Hunter: Wilds.
The Elder Scrolls franchise is loved by a massive fandom. This series’ fandom is loyal and would wait for years for a sequel in their beloved franchise. Recently, Bethesda surprised its fandom by shadow dropping Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, one of the best RPGS to ever exist in the history of gaming.
Even if it was a shadow launch, the fandom didn’t hesitate to hop on the game, and it reached a peak of over 216 K. That is pretty insane for a game that was shadow dropped. Thanks to the massive player base, Oblivion Remastered has already become the third best-selling game of 2025 in the US after being in the market for just over a week.
Why it matters: It is already the fifth month of 2025, so it is really surprising to see a game becoming the third best in a federal republic, consisting of 50 states, after just being launched for over a week.
One of the most reliable analysts, Mat Piscatella, has revealed that Elder Scrolls 4 Remastered became the 3rd best-selling game of 2025, just one week after being launched.
Mat Piscatella, one of the most reliable analysts, has revealed that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has already achieved a major milestone of becoming the third best-selling title in the US after being in the market for just one week.
After just one week in market (w/e 4.26) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Remastered is already the 3rd best-selling game of 2025 in the US ($ sales) trailing only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
It is only behind Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and Monster Hunter: Wilds, with the latter being in first position. It is only a matter of time before Oblivion beats AC: Shadows to get the second, but it won’t be realistic to expect it to take the throne, as for now, that belongs to Monster Hunter: Wilds.
This game reached a peak of nearly 1.4 million 2 months ago and has already sold over 10 million copies. Surpassing this milestone is unrealistic this year, even if we are talking about The Elder Scrolls 4.
What do you think about Oblivion instantly climbing up the ranks? Do you think it will take Assassin’s Creed: Shadows’ position soon enough? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.

Gears of War: Reloaded officially releases on August 26th for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the PS5.
Why it matters: Hailed as one of the most iconic and influential video games, Gears of War deserves another remaster since the last one was about a decade ago. It would introduce the game to a whole new audience as Xbox works on the next mainline entry in the franchise.
Gears of War: Reloaded is being developed by Coalition Games in collaboration with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief and will feature 4k resolution and 120FPS. Additionally, players can expect zero loading screens during the campaign, enhanced visual effects, textures, shadows, and resolution with minimal aliasing.
Moreover, the game will also feature cross-progression and cross-play across all platforms. However, cross-play will require players to sign in to their Microsoft accounts on the PS5 and PC.

Gears Of War E-Day Will Be The First Mainline Game In Almost 7 Years
Like any other Xbox first-party game, Gears of War: Reloaded will also be a Day One Game Pass title. However, if players have purchased Gears of War Ultimate Edition before today’s announcement, they can expect a free copyto be delivered to eligible players before launch.
Beyond this remaster, the next mainline entry, Gears of War: E-Day, is actively being worked on. The prequel game is set to release next year, as per leaks

The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director states that making new IPs at AAA studios is challenging.
He describes that even pitching such games requires influence at these studios.
As per the director, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would have required 25 years to make at a huge studio like Ubisoft.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 saw former Ubisoft talent delivering an iconic RPG this year, and many have been shocked by the level of quality on display. As per the game’s director, he became bored with making similar types of games at the studio.
During another interview, he elaborated that such a project would have taken multiple decades at Ubisoft.
Why it matters: AAA studios are typically a lot less willing to take big risks, making unique ideas and IPs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 uncommon in this part of the industry.
Speaking to Pouce Cafe, director Guillame Broche was asked whether a project like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would have been possible at a major studio like Ubisoft.
He discussed the complexities of AAA development, revealing that projects with new stories and ideas typically receive pushback from the higher-ups. Guillame Broche elaborated that there are multiple approval steps that need to be cleared before the project can even commence development.
He also stated that developers need to be high up in the company’s hierarchy to hope to pitch such ideas. Concluding his response, the director stated that a game like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 would have taken a whopping 25 years to make at a AAA studio.
If it had been feasible, it would have taken me 25 years before being able to do it.
-Guillaume Broche
Therefore, the game would not have been possible to make at Ubisoft. If anything, it may have suffered a similar fate as Skull and Bones, which was stuck in development hell for nearly a full decade.
Ubisoft Games Like Skull And Bones Show The Downsides of AAA Gaming
The director’s statement highlights one benefit of working at an indie or AA studio. Because Sandfall Interactive is a fairly small team, the studio was able to deliver a focused and high-quality gameplay experience with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Oblivion Remastered and Forza Horizon 5 were the most downloaded games for the PS5 in April.
It’s impressive for a shadow-drop and a port releasing 4 years after its initial release to top the charts.
Xbox’s publisher route is working well for them since most of the titles on the list were from the gaming giant.
April 2025 saw some record-breaking releases like Clair Obscur: Expedition, the long-rumoured Oblivion Remastered, Forza Horizon 5 PS5 port, and other releases.
However, despite the tough competition, Oblivion Remastered and Forza Horizon 5 were the most downloaded games on the PlayStation Store during the month of April.
Why it matters: Oblivion Remastered being a surprise drop and Forza Horizon 5 releasing on PS5, 4 years after its initial launch, reigned supreme on the PlayStation Store last month is really impressive.
In the US/Canada region, Oblivion Remastered topped the chart, followed by Minecraft and Forza Horizon 5 in second and third place, respectively. In the EU region, Forza Horizon 5 claimed the top spot, with Oblivion Remastered in second and Minecraft securing third place.
While Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered were new releases for the PS5, Minecraft’s longevity is quite surprising. The jump in players also contributed to the hype the franchise had with A Minecraft Movie’s release last month.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was also among the top 5 most downloaded games within the EU. However, within the US/Canada region, the title took 6th place.
Xbox Led Pre-Orders On PlayStation Within The Last Quarter
That said, most of the titles on the list appeared to be published by Xbox, which has finally found resounding success with its multiplatform approach. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Minecraft, Oblivion Remastered, and Forza Horizon 5 are all published and owned by Xbox.
PlayStation still tracks PS4 releases as well. Red Dead Redemption 2 was the most downloaded gamefor the last-gen console across both the EU and the US/Canada regions.

Many of the Japanese studios have seen immense growth over the years. The games produced in the land of the rising sun have proven to be quite popular in the entire gaming industry, and the ex-PlayStation boss argues that it’s because of a very simple fact.
Why it matters: Shuhei Yoshida claims that Japanese games have been so popular in the industry because they embrace their local culture instead of trying to westernize or generalize for everyone.
In an interview with PlayStation Inside, Shuhei Yoshida elaborates that the Japanese industry was saved because it embraced what made it stand out amid the crowd and presented its identity to the world.
the recipe for the rediscovered success of Japanese video games is to have been able to return to the development of games that can only be made in Japan, by Japanese people.
For those not in the know, the Japanese gaming scene severely declined during the PS3 era, when many local developers chased Western trends. However, NieR: Automata—released in 2017—finally turned things around for the local industry.
The action RPG was successful because it embraced Japanese storytelling that massively appealed to gamers; promoting local culture has become a norm for Japanese developers since.
Ghost of Tsushima is one of the few Western games that capture the Japanese essence.
Shuhei Yoshida also adds that no studios can succeed by copying other formulas; instead, it’s better to introduce unique cultures to the gaming industry.

According to executives, the game initially struggled to sell well because of delays and intense competition in the genre.
The 2018 DICE FPS Battlefield 5 was a hit or miss, depending on who you ask. However, EA deemed the game a failure despite selling over 7.3 million copies two months after launch. As per a new update, it has now amassed over 7 million more units since.
The game’s narrative director confirms that Battlefield 5 has now driven over 14 million sales worldwide since its controversial launch over half a decade ago. The whole franchise now boasts over 100 million copies sold.
Why it matters: Battlefield 5 selling over 14 million copies six and a half years after launch suggests that the FPS did attract the attention of new players because of various factors after the initial hype died off.

The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director has revealed he left Ubisoft because he was bored at work.
He wanted to make an RPG inspired by his childhood favorite series, Final Fantasy.
Most of the developers on the game were fresh and hired through platforms like Reddit.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently launched to a massive reception from the fans despite its release clashing with Bethesda’s heavy-hitting shadowdrop, Oblivion Remastered. It is also no secret that the game’s developers have previously worked at Ubisoft.
However, the game director revealed that he grew bored at Ubisoft and wanted to do something new, which led him to come up with an idea for an RPG inspired by one of his childhood favorite franchises.
Why it matters: Fans often complain that Ubisoft games are stuck in a cycle, but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is highly creative and opens the turn-based genre to a whole new audience, marking great success.
Clair Obscur was mostly developed by fresh faces.
Talking to the BBC, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director and former Ubisoft developer Guillaume Broche revealed that the game was initially just a passion project. Despite the belief that most developers are Ubisoft veterans, most of the team consists of newcomers.
Broche wanted to create a game inspired by the Final Fantasy franchise, so he left Ubisoft in 2020. Interestingly, most of the team was hired through Reddit and other forums for this passion project.
At the start, there was no funding; however, later Kepler Interactive funded the project, and the team grew to 30 people, forming Sandfall Entertainment. He says none of this sounded right, but it ended up working out so well.
The title began as a passion project, but later got funded by Kepler Interactive.
The title has since sold over 1 million copies and has consistently recorded higher concurrent players, despite being over a week since launch. The game is also really polished and doesn’t seem like the work of fresh faces at all.

Call of Duty is reportedly locking limited game modes behind the Battle Pass this year.
This change would further increase Activision’s focus on monetization through microtransactions in Call of Duty.
On the other hand, the gaming giant could introduce better limited modes due to the connection with the Battle Pass.
Call of Duty is among the most microtransaction-heavy games on the market today, but new reports indicate the franchise is taking things up a notch.
This year’s entry, expected to be a direct sequel to Black Ops 2, is reportedly set to debut a new system for LTMs (Limited Time Modes). This system will see LTMs being locked to the game’s Battle Pass, effectively locking them away from a large chunk of the Call of Duty audience.
Why it matters: This year’s Call of Duty is expected to be the most expensive to date, marking the series’ debut into the $80 price tag.
Call of Duty is Set To Test New Monetization Methods This Year | Image via X
As reported by reliable insider Ghost of Hope, Black Ops 7 is set to continue the trend of introducing LTMs. However, these LTMs, in addition to their higher-tier rewards, will be accessible exclusively to Battle Pass owners.
For context, Black Ops 6 already tried something similar with the Squid Games collaboration from last year. This crossover came with a Premium Track that allowed players to obtain exclusive weapons and cosmetics, so Activision will likely attempt to expand on the same idea.
The current Call of Duty system offers different progression for the LTMs, but this is set to change very soon. As per Ghost of Hope, the new system could lead to better events in Black Ops 7 since Activision would have a greater incentive to invest a bigger budget into the LTMs.
Players, on the other hand, are not pleased with this information. Many have argued that the LTM rewards are rarely too impressive. They also state that Activision’s monetization has gotten out of hand in recent years.
Black Ops 2 Characters Are Set To Return This Year
Because Black Ops 7 is expected to cost $80, these microtransaction changes will likely prove to be even more controversial. Longtime fans of the franchise have pointed out that the series somehow continues to offer less content the more expensive it becomes.

Sony cancelled God of War’s live-service project, focusing on a complete, story-driven experience.
Sony cancelled or postponed several live-service projects, including Bend Studio’s, and expects no layoffs.
A new Greek spin-off of God of War will possibly be released this year, bridging the gap between God of War 3 and the 2018 Norse entry.
Sony created God of War as a single-player adventure, and it has become a highly praised game known for its exciting battles and deep characters. It tells a compelling story with impressive graphics and gameplay that immerses players in its world. However, not long ago, discussions emerged about turning God of War into a live service game.
Many developers use the live service model to keep players engaged and returning. In this model, developers update games with new content, events, and rewards. However, God of War is a story-driven game rather than a game that requires constant updates and events.
Many fans have become frustrated by the trend of turning classic games into live-service models. They worry that such a shift would compromise the game’s simple and pure original experience.
The Spark: A Report And A Failure
Most Of PlayStation’s Live Service Projects Are Failures.
Renowned journalist Jason Schreier confirmed on the Bluesky platform that Sony had long planned to turn God of War into a live-service game. Bluepoint Games was reportedly working on the project.
Although Sony canceled the project, the idea of turning God of War into a live-service game highlights the company’s ongoing push for the live-service model. This strategy has already caused several project cancellations. Following major failures like Concord, the move raised serious concerns among fans.
One reason Sony prefers live-service games is their potential profitability. Live service games can undoubtedly thrive, but only if executed correctly by prioritizing player experience rather than profit. Many companies have adopted this model, but not all games have thrived.
Several live-service games have been canceled. For example, the Last of Us multiplayer project was canceled because it lacked the resources and structure needed to sustain a live-service title. On the other hand, games like Helldivers 2 show that live-service games can thrive when built on a solid concept.
The cancellation of Sony’s God of War live service project also affected its first-party studios. But the cancellation ensured the series stayed a well-crafted, fully realized experience, avoiding the pitfalls of the live-service model. God of War has always delivered a complete story, unlike live-service games that rely on frequent updates.
What’s Next For God Of War?
A New God Of War Greek Spin-off Will Likely Release This Year.
A few years ago, Sony had several live-service projects in development, but that number declined significantly by the end of 2023. Moreover, Sony’s other live-service project, Fairgame$, has also been postponed until 2026. Bloomberg also confirmed that Bend Studio had been working on a live-service game for an extended period, but it, too, was canceled.
Sony has assured that there will be no layoffs due to these cancellations. A Sony spokesperson stated, “Bend and Bluepoint are important studios for PlayStation. We are working with them to decide their next projects.” This decision indicates that Sony is learning from past mistakes.
With the live-service project canceled, the question remains: What’s next for God of War? Sony or Santa Monica Studio, the team behind the franchise, has no clear plans. Santa Monica Studio released a free DLC expansion for God of War Ragnarok. This surprise gift delighted fans and reaffirmed the studio’s commitment to delivering great experiences.
Insider Jeff Grubb reports that God of War will receive a Greek spin-off this year. This project will not be a remaster of the original trilogy but rather a smaller-scale side story that explores the franchise’s Greek era. It could fill the gap between God of War 3 and the 2018 Norse entry. Fans are excited about the return to Greece.
Nowadays, the gaming community often criticizes live service games for being shallow and repetitive. As the industry evolves, there is a growing realization that quality should take precedence over quantity. Fans want a well-told story, not a game that constantly changes and loses its identity.
While the future of God of War remains uncertain, with the cancellation of the live-service project, fans remain hopeful. The upcoming Greek spin-off suggests that Santa Monica Studio is continuing to give the franchise the same attention to detail and quality that fans have come to expect.

Hyperrealistic graphics can be costly and risky, often leading to financial losses for studios.
Stylized games age better and enhance storytelling more than realism, as seen with Wind Waker, Persona 5, etc.
Art style directly impacts gameplay and immersion, proving creativity is more important than graphical fidelity alone.
Video games have come a long way, and graphics cards have played a major role in their evolution. Gamers have different thoughts on whether hyper-realistic graphics make a game better or a unique art style. Realism closely mimics the real world, while creative art focuses on unique styles and imaginative designs.
As AAA developers have chased hyper-realistic visuals in recent years, many gamers have turned to indie titles for their storytelling and creative art. The reason why creative art direction is more important than pure realism is because it remains visually appealing for years and stands out from the crowd.
Realism Can Be Expensive And Risky
Marvel’s Avengers Disappointed Players & Was Removed From All Digital Stores.
Creating a game with hyper-realistic graphics requires significant investment in marketing, development, time, and resources. Big companies like Rockstar can afford to spend heavily to create lifelike worlds, as seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, which remains one of the most highly regarded games years after its release.
However, not every studio can develop such games due to budget constraints. Attempting to achieve high realism without enough resources can lead to major economic loss. For example, Immortals of Aveum had poor sales, which forced the studio to lay off 50% of its staff just a month after release.
Moreover, hyper-realistic games often lack creativity, are released with bugs, and sometimes are launched unfinished. In contrast, games with unique art styles prioritize artistic creativity, allowing developers to create memorable visuals even with limited resources.
Marvel’s Avengers is a perfect example of the risks of prioritizing realism over creativity. Despite its massive budget, the game’s realistic graphics felt lifeless, the environments felt repetitive, and it failed to impress the community visually. As a result, the game was eventually removed from all digital platforms.
Another example is Concord, a paid hero shooter by Sony that became a disaster within weeks of its release. Competition from free-to-play rivals, an uninspired art style, and repetitive gameplay led to the game’s failure and significant financial loss for the company.
Why Unique Art Style Is Important In Gaming
The Wind Waker Is Praised For Its Unique Art Style.
One major issue with hyper-realistic games is that they don’t age well. As technology advances, what looks realistic today may seem outdated in just a few years. For instance, when The Witcher 3 was released, its visuals were groundbreaking, but they now feel less impressive than modern games.
In contrast, stylized games rely on artistic expression rather than technological power, giving them a timeless quality. For example, in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. When it was released, some critics disliked its cartoon-like graphics, but years later, people’s opinions have changed due to the game’s unique design.
Moreover, unique art styles bring characters and worlds to life more meaningfully. Realistic games sometimes feel mechanical, focusing more on accuracy than creating a strong emotional connection with players.
Art style is a crucial part of a game’s identity. Even in superhero games, stylized art has proven to be more engaging. For example, Marvel Rivals features the same characters as Marvel’s Avengers. Still, instead of dull realism, it uses bold colors, expressive designs, and cel-shaded graphics, making it stand out in the gaming community.
How Art Style Shapes Gameplay
Bioshock Infinite Art
Many realistic games feel repetitive and uninspired. In contrast, stylized games allow developers to create entirely new worlds. Games like BioShock and Persona 5 use bold artistic choices to craft immersive, one-of-a-kind experiences.
Stylized games feel more inspired and engaging. Take Borderlands, for example; it uses a comic book-style cel-shaded art direction. While other shooters opt for ultra-realism, Borderlands stands out with its hand-drawn textures and exaggerated character designs, giving it a unique identity.
Hyper-realism can succeed only when executed well. Players appreciate realistic visuals, as seen with Rockstar’s upcoming GTA VI, one of the year’s most anticipated games. However, not all games are well-made, often leading to major losses. That’s why gaming studios should prioritize storytelling over chasing hyper-realistic graphics.
Creative art direction is now essential to what makes a game special. If developers want their games to stand out and remain beloved for years, embracing creative art direction is the way forward.
At Tech4Gamers, I mainly cover new gaming news, leaks, and rumours. Aside from that, I love to write features about my favourite games while inserting my opinion about their different aspects.

Inspired by Zelda games, Mina the Hollower offers a nostalgic, fresh adventure with a darker, gothic world and unique mechanics.
Developed by Yacht Club Games, known for Shovel Knight, the game blends retro visuals with RPG elements and strategic combat.
While still in development and without an official release date, the game’s polish and promising design suggest it could be another indie hit.
Many Zelda fans always search for new games with the same excitement level. Players have recommended many games inspired by Zelda. If you are a Zelda fan, top recommendations include Tunic, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Death’s Door, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: A Zelda-Like Adventure Worth Playing
Apart from these games, one upcoming indie title stands out: Mina the Hollower. Yacht Club, the same studio behind Shovel Knight, created this game. It takes inspiration from classic 8-bit adventure games but adds its own unique twist, delivering the nostalgic feeling fans crave.
A Nostalgic Adventure With New Ideas
At first glance, Mina the Hollower looks like the older Zelda games. It has a top-down view, similar to classic 2D Zelda titles. The game’s characters, items, and landscapes use simple square designs that will remind players of the classic Zelda games.
Yacht Club mentioned on the game’s Kickstarter page that Link’s Awakening inspired Mina the Hollower. The game also takes ideas from Castlevaniaand Bloodborne. It features bright and bold colors, giving the look and feel of an old-school Game Boy Color game.
Players control Mina, a brave character on a mission to restore power to the island. Like in Zelda, Mina explores different areas, fights enemies, and collects valuable items. However, despite all the similarities, Mina the Hollower is not just a simple copy.
Tenebrous Isle: Mina The Hollower Game World- Credit By (Kickstarter)
In a recent interview, Sandy Gordon of Yacht Club Games discussed Mina the Hollower’s inspirations, gameplay, and development. He mentioned how the game introduces fresh ideas, such as the world of Tenebrous Isle, which has a darker, gothic feel, making it both eerie and beautiful.
In contrast, classic Zelda games usually have bright and cheerful worlds. This difference gives Mina the Hollower a fresh identity while still capturing the essence of classic adventure games.
One of the most exciting features he mentioned is Mina’s ability to burrow underground for a shorter period, adding strategic movement and combat. Additionally, the game includes RPG elements, such as collecting bones to level up Mina and improve her abilities. Players will also find unique weapons and tools to enhance combat.
A Game Made By A Trusted Studio
One reason to be excited about Mina the Hollower is the studio behind it. Yacht Club has a strong reputation for creating high-quality, retro-inspired games. The community highly praised their game Shovel Knight for its smooth gameplay, fun level design, and charming characters, and it even has multiple expansions.
The studio understands what makes classic games great while incorporating new gameplay features and ideas to keep things exciting. Because of Yacht Club’s track record, many believe Mina the Hollower will be another indie hit. The team has been working hard to polish the game, ensuring it meets high expectations.

Despite drawing inspiration from classic Zelda games, the developers have ensured that Mina feels fresh and unique. She is a small character who relies on intelligence and agility to survive. The game’s darker and gothic atmosphere creates a sense of danger and mystery, making exploring every new area exciting.
There is no official release date for Mina the Hollower. The game is still in development, but the most recent 2024 trailer shows that the team is in the polishing phase. You can stay updated on the game’s progress by supporting its Kickstarter campaign. Fans are hopeful that the full release will be announced soon.
If you are a Zelda fan, Mina the Hollower is a game you shouldn’t miss. It blends classic adventure elements, fun exploration, and unique mechanics, making it feel familiar and fresh. Be sure to watch its release so you can experience the excitement from day one, before spoilers ruin everything.
