Red Dead Redemption 3 Isn’t Rockstar’s Priority, But It Is Being Planned

Story Highlight
  • An anonymous source working with the developer has revealed to Tech4Gamers that Red Dead Redemption 3 isn’t the company’s priority at the moment.
  • They revealed that the developer is focused entirely on GTA 6.
  • However, while the company is focused on the next installment in the GTA series, the third installment in the RDR franchise is being planned.

Rockstar is very well known for Red Dead Redemption 2, which shocked the world back in 2018. It is arguably one of the greatest games released to date. RDR2 has also been voted as the best sequel released in a massive poll, thanks to its unmatched story and gorgeous open world

Fans still argue to this day that this game was robbed of GOTY in 2018 and have believed ever since that The Game Awards is a totally biased show. That said, fans of the Red Dead Redemption series would be delighted to know that the third installment in the series, Red Dead Redemption 3, is being planned at Rockstar

Why it matters: It has been a long time since the second game in the series was launched, so fans have been waiting patiently for a third entry for a really long time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Managed To Increase the Bar For Gaming In 2018.

A Rockstar employee told Tech4Gamers that the developer is currently prioritising GTA 6 only. The company’s entire focus is on its upcoming game, which is guaranteed to shake the world.

However, the employee also revealed that while the company’s primary focus is on GTA 6, plans for Red Dead Redemption 3 are already underway. They agreed to let us share this information on the condition that their identity remains completely anonymous for personal reasons.

Since the anonymous employee didn’t share additional details, it’s reasonable to assume that Red Dead Redemption 3 is still in the conceptual phase. Once the highly anticipated next installment in the GTA series launches, development focus will likely shift toward it.

Previously, Strauss Zlenick confirmed that the developer aims to develop another iteration in the Red Dead series, but due to a lack of communication, the fandom was skeptical. However, fans shouldn’t expect much information from Rockstar or Take-Two before the release of its biggest title.

Game Pass Only Considered ‘Profitable’ Because Xbox Doesn’t Count First-Party Costs, Insider Claims

Story Highlight
  • Insider Chris Dring claims that Xbox only considers Game Pass profitable because it doesn’t count first-party costs.
  • It also doesn’t count the lost revenue that first-party studios are seeing as a result of Game Pass.
  • It is only profitable if fees paid to third parties, marketing, and service costs are considered in metrics.

Update: Insider Chris Dring has clarified his comments, claiming that sources reached out to confirm that Game Pass remains profitable, even when considering the lost sales for first-party teams and the lost revenue associated with first-party games.

Even when providing value for money, Game Pass has always been considered a controversial subscription service by analysts and a big part of the gaming scene. Notable developers are also blaming it for contributing to the massive layoffs that also targeted Xbox.

Amid these discussions, popular insider Chris Dring argues against the claim that Game Pass is profitable. Chris says he confronted Xbox for calling the service profitable, only to find out that the company doesn’t count first-party costs in the metrics.

Why it matters: Xbox Game Pass might only be profitable on paper but may fall short if some of the biggest costs—like developing first-party AAA titles—were factored in while judging the metrics.

Xbox told Chris Dring that it doesn’t count first-party costs when calling Game Pass profitable.

On Twitter, Chris Dring highlights that Game Pass is only profitable to Microsoft because only ‘fees paid to third parties, marketing, service costs…’ and the like are considered.

Some of the biggest costs, such as developing AAA games in-house and the revenue loss these first-party studios face because of Game Pass, are not factored into the metrics. Therefore, there is a very steep chance that the service is only profitable on paper.

What they don’t count is the lost revenue that Xbox’s first-party studios are seeing as a result of the service. I have to imagine if first-party studios received similar compensation, that profitability might not be correct.

Additionally, if Game Pass was profitable even with first-party costs included, then why would Xbox leave that highly important part out of the calculations in the first place?

Some fans argue that Xbox Game Pass is delivering better value for money this year.

Microsoft also wants Game Pass to grow by 40% yearly and triple in size by 2030 to reach 100 million subscribers for optimal results. However, the situation looks bleak as fans are already boycotting the service.

Do you think that Xbox Game Pass is only profitable because first-party costs are never included in the metrics? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

New Mafia The Old Country Gameplay Footage Channels Uncharted Style

Story Highlight
  • New gameplay footage for Mafia The Old Country has been revealed.
  • The game appears to be semi-linear, with a few explorable areas for players.
  • Players can approach the game with stealth or go guns blazing, but combat looks fun nonetheless.

Hangar Games has taken a different direction with the upcoming Mafia game by ditching the open-world model and adopting a linear approach, thereby avoiding the bloated and open-world model that Mafia 3 was criticised for.

Mafia The Old Country, the fourth mainline entry in the series, will explore the roots of how the Mafia came into being from the underworld of Sicily. Ahead of its August 8th release, brand-new gameplay footage for the title has been released, focusing mainly on the game’s stealth and action sequences.

Why it matters: Being the first new mainline release in almost a decade, Mafia The Old Country is one of 2025’s most ambitious releases. This gameplay footage further increases the game’s hype ahead of launch.

The exclusive 9-minute gameplay footage by IGN is taken from the 5th chapter of the game titled “Villa.” Without focusing too much on the plot, this mission centres on the lead character, Enzo, being tasked with attacking enemy territory to send a message.

The gameplay also reveals that the protagonist’s own Crew assigns the mission from their Villa. From there, players can choose their own weapon and drive off to the objective, hinting at a semi-linear model.

The visuals look amazing, and Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities do shine here. Players have either the choice to move with stealth or go guns blazing. The stealth sequences bear a resemblance to those in Uncharted games, and the overall aesthetic matches that of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Mafia: The Old Country excels at being a typical action-adventure game, with a strong emphasis on narrative, which will be the key to the game’s success. Most of the game is also rebuilt on Mafia Remake’s assets, which explains the lower $50 price tag.

What are your thoughts on Mafia The Old Country so far? Will you buy the game when it releases next month? Let us know in the comments below, or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

Almost Half Of 2025’s Top-Performing Steam Games Are Either AA Or Indie

Story Highlight
  • Public data on the Steam tracker, SteamDB, suggests that almost half of this year’s best-performing Steam games are either AA or indie.
  • These eight AA projects made their way into the top 20 list of titles that launched this year with the highest concurrent player counts.
  • This 40% dominance on the list suggests that players are starting to prefer AA and indie entries over AAA titles on Steam.

The last few years have seen a huge increase in AAA titles with large open worlds and high visual fidelity, but unrealistic budget expectations have started a shift towards AA and indie projects. Now, this year’s statistics from Steam also paint a similar picture.

The public data on the Steam tracker, SteamDB, shows that almost half of this year’s top 20 top-performing Steam titles were either AA or indie instead of AAA titles. In other words, these 40% of games were created by smaller indie teams instead of giant studios.

Why it matters: The large daily player counts suggest that indie games might even surpass the AAA gaming scene in a few years if big studios don’t find a solution.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the best-performing AA titles that launched this year.

Manually comparing all the 2025’s top 20 titles with the highest player counts reveals that projects like Schedule 1 (459,798), R.E.P.O. (271,571), and Split Fiction (259,003) were able to outshine many AAA offerings.

Capcom’s AAA Monster Hunter Wilds stole the top spot with 1,384,608 daily players, but it also has a bunch of performance issues. In comparison, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 boasted 256,206 active players, and Bongo Cat (194,508) also dominated the charts.

On the flip side, Assassin’s Creed Shadows only reached 64,825 active players. But the much smaller Rematch (92,841) by Sifu developers easily surpassed that.

Rematch
Sloclap’s Rematch is also shaping up to be a highly engaging indie experience.

Lastly, the well-received Stellar Blade (192,078) did beat some of the smaller indie games in the top 20 list, such as Clair Obscur with 145,063 active players and Sultan’s Game with 46,106 active players.

In the past, statistics also revealed that indie games were earning nearly as much revenue as AAA projects on Steam, as the interest of players continues to turn towards smaller projects.

Selling 10 Million Copies Now Considered An ‘Ordinary’ Benchmark For AAA Games, Ex-PlayStation Boss Says

Story Highlight
  • The former PlayStation boss, Shuhei Yoshida, claims that selling 10 million units is now considered an ordinary feat for most AAA games.
  • He says recouping budgets is nearly impossible this PS5 generation, and action is needed.
  • These increasingly high expectations from AAA games have led publishers to greenlight fewer and fewer projects.

It is no surprise to claim that AAA games are now bigger than ever, with colossal worlds and increasingly high technical milestones. However, all this has not been possible without massive budgets, to the point that recouping them has become nearly impossible.

The former PlayStation boss, Shuhei Yoshida, even believes that selling 10 million units for most AAA entries is now just an ‘ordinary’ feat rather than a real cause for celebration among developers because budgets are barely recovered at that standard.

Why it matters: The PlayStation boss says the industry must rewind to curb rising expectations for AAA games and avoid unrealistic goals.

On the Kit & Krysta podcast, Shuhei says that game publishers are now greenlighting fewer and fewer games because of the $200 million AAA budgets. Even the ones that are greenlit often end up being sequels or remakes, as taking risks can lead to the demise of entire studios.

during PS1 days you know selling [A] million was a huge hit. but now […] selling 10 million is kind of you know ordinary. […] moving from PS4 to PS5, somehow technology is similar but the budget is still increasing.

The PS4 era saw many AAA blockbusters dominate the industry, as going big was considered a safer approach. The chances of success and budgets would be recovered, as everyone wanted larger games with more visual fidelity until it became too much.

Marvels Spider Man 2 Sony Layoffs
Many PlayStation fans are also furious about the recent regional price hikes.

However, that bubble has burst so hard that even a successful AAA game barely appears to break even when AA titles like Clair Obscur and Blue Prince are starting to dominate the industry instead.

Do you think these gaming publishers are placing unrealistic expectations on their AAA projects? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Diversity Is Being Cut From Video Games, Says Baldur’s Gate 3 Voice Actor

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3’s Voice Actor claims that devs are cutting storylines involving DEI from their video games.
  • They added that a game as diverse as Baldur’s Gate 3 would struggle to get greenlit today.
  • However, they’re optimistic that DEI will not be eliminated from the industry and that indie titles will continue to implement it.

With the rise of companies like Sweet Baby Inc., the video game industry has faced severe backlash for its forced DEI initiatives in recent years. These practices didn’t last long, as severe public backlash forced devs to abandon them.

The voice actor for Baldur’s Gate 3 has also discussed DEI in video games and claimed that devs are now censoring their work that involves diversity.

Why it matters: Diversity in video games is completely fine, unless it’s enforced upon. Doing so ruins the storyline and the entire flow and structure of a game.

lords of the fallen
Lords of The Fallen studio revealed it won’t add political agendas to its games

Samantha Béart, the voice actor for Karlach, was recently interviewed by TheGamer. They discussed how diversity storylines are being cut from games.

Without exposing devs, I know that’s happening. Their storylines have been cut, – Historically, appeasement is a really bad thing

They also added that a game as diverse as Baldur’s Gate 3 would struggle to get greenlit in today’s environment. Still, diversity in video games won’t disappear entirely, according to them, as indie devs are unlikely to follow suit in cutting storylines.

Big publishers like Amazon have already started to ditch their DEI programs and are “winding down outdated programs and materials.”

The CI Games CEO also states that DEI has led to various studio closures, among other issues, and that the industry is now course-correcting following fans’ backlash.

The DEI controversies have also made devs and voice actors in the industry prone to hate and backlash from gamers. Naughty Dog has even started boot camp training their actors to prepare for the online backlash they’d receive for their roles.

The Best Value For Money Controller Doesn’t Exist…

Story Highlights
  • Flydegi Vader 4 Pro is a great budget alternative to the Flydegi Apex 4, with a similar 1000Hz polling rate, adjustable tension sticks, and instant triggers.
  • There are two extra buttons at the front side, and you can manually adjust the tension on the sticks without any over-tensioning issue.
  • There’s a 0% mean circle error, and the processing unit is also the same as the Apex 4, but there are no screens or grips on this controller.

When discussing controllers and which ones are the best, nothing can beat aftermarket controllers. While there are numerous options available on the market for these controllers, one stands out as the top choice for most people: the Flydegi Vader 4 Pro.

Why The Vader 4 Pro Over Other Controllers?

Firstly, it is compared to its elder sibling, the Flydegi Apex 4, which is considered the best controller ever. However, in many ways, it surpasses that, and we’ll discuss this later throughout the article. But first, let’s take a look at what this controller is all about.

Manual Tension Adjustment

One of the most prominent features of this controller that stands out immediately as you look at it is the adjustable tension joysticks. With this, you can tighten or loosen the stick according to your preference.

Many people choose to keep their left stick at the minimum tension so they can move it around freely, but keep the tension on the right stick halfway through so they have precise control over their aim.

No More Damaging The Controller

While the Flydegi Apex 4 also had a similar mechanism, it was slightly different. In that controller, you had to remove the cover and then manually screw the knob to adjust the tension, whereas the Vader 4 Pro features a rotatable ring around the joysticks.

Not only does it help in easily adjusting the tension without any hassle, but it also solves a big issue that the Apex 4 had. On that controller, people used to screw the tension so tightly that it caused joystick issues.

However, with the Vader 4 Pro, there are hard stops that prevent people from exceeding a certain point, thereby avoiding damage to the joystick itself. The sticks also have a perfect 0% mean, with only 0.1% error when rotated fully in a circle.

Near Perfect Circle Mean

With this, it feels that the consistent speed of aim doesn’t change when you go diagonally with the sticks in any game. If the outer bounds of the circle are slightly wider where the corners of the square are, then your aim is gonna be inconsistent.

If you’re wondering why some controller players tend to be better than keyboard and mouse players, this might be the reason why, and it is usually found in aftermarket controllers like the Vader 4 Pro.

Instant Mouse-Click Triggers

While this is a Hall effect controller, it doesn’t feature Hall effect triggers. Instead, Flydegi went on to include smooth triggers with mouse clicks, which aren’t just a gimmick but actually instant triggers with the same sounds as from a mouse.

Buttons

Apart from the same extra back buttons, you also get two extra buttons in the front just below the four buttons, which are customizable. The buttons are slightly lower than the standard buttons, which also makes them easier to reach with your thumb.

For the back buttons, you typically experience a slight input delay, which is why many professional players prefer the claw grip and use the front buttons instead. However, with this controller, the delay isn’t quite as pronounced as with some other controllers.

Additionally, the extra buttons on the front side allow for more buttons to be pressed than the standard four. However, for a claw grip, I’ve noticed that it isn’t as effective, as you’ve to move a bit lower to press them.

Material & RGB

The material used is plastic, which is done to reduce costs; however, it may feel a bit cheap to some people. Since the plastic may feel loose or uncomfortable to grip, it is recommended that you use grip tape for this purpose. The same tape used on the Vader 3 can also be applied here.

To cut costs, this control does not have any screens. Instead, there’s an appealing RGB lining that forms a V shape, denoting the initials of this controller’s name. A screen on a controller is typically more of a gimmick, so it isn’t of much importance for most people.

Polling Rate & Device Support

It is a fully 1000Hz device, and the latency test is identical to that of the Apex 4, so the processing unit inside this controller is more or less the same as the one in the Apex 4. You can also connect it via a dongle, Bluetooth, or the standard wired connection with a Type-C port.

Perfect Circle Mean
Perfect Circle Mean (Image Credits -YT/Slite)

Verdict

The best part about the Vader 4 Pro is the price. It only costs $80, which is half of the Apex 4, which costs $160. And some online retailers are selling it for way below that as well, which makes it one of the best controllers for value.

Devs Prefer PS Plus Approach Over Game Pass, Following Xbox Layoffs

Story Highlight
  • Fans and developers have praised Game Pass on many occasions, as it is pretty consumer-friendly.
  • However, due to the recent mass layoffs, the opinions of many seem to have changed.
  • Now, some high-profile developers have said that they prefer the PS Plus approach over Game Pass.

Recently, Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees. The layoffs were primarily targeted at the company’s gaming division, Xbox, mainly due to unrealistic expectations set by the CFO. Games like Perfect Dark were canceled, angering a massive amount of fandom.

As a result, many fans decided to cancel their Game Pass membership as a form of protest against Xbox. Now, even developers are saying that they prefer Sony’s approach to the PS Plus over Microsoft’s approach to the Game Pass.

Why it matters: Most of the time, Xbox Game Pass has been preferred over the PS Plus because it is more consumer-friendly. However, due to these massive layoffs, people are changing their opinions.

Michael Douse's Opinion On Game Pass

The former founder of Arkane Studios, Raphael Colantonio, also recently implied that Game Pass is the main culprit behind these layoffs. He said, “Why is no one talking about the elephant in the room? Cough, cough, Game Pass”.

On his tweet, many other developers shared their thoughts regarding the recent layoffs and what’s going on with Microsoft. Colantino further stated that the Game Pass is an unsustainable model that has been harming the industry for a decade and will continue to do so.

The publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3, Michael Douse, also shared his opinion, further degrading the Xbox’s subscription model. Douse further said that Game Pass did help the smaller teams, but he prefers Sony’s strategy with PS Plus.

Xbox Game Pass Boycott
Microsoft is Being Criticized By A Lot of People Around The Globe

The economics never made sense, but at the same time I do recognise that for smaller teams with new or riskier IPs it helped de-risk. Much prefer Sony’s ‘lifecycle management’ strategy.

PlayStation does not plan to release its first-party games on its subscription service on the same day. It doesn’t even release them after some time has passed. This way, the company ensures that fans buy games instead of just subscribing to PS Plus.

60FPS Xbox Series S Games Should Be Easily Ported To Switch 2, Says Dev

Story Highlight
  • A developer claims that the Nintendo Switch 2’s GPU is slightly weaker than that of the Xbox Series S.
  • The team believes that games supporting 60FPS on the budget Xbox should be easy to port to Nintendo hardware.
  • However, CPU-bound games like GTA 6 are unlikely to receive a port.

Much has been said about the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 since its release. Nvidia boasted a 10x graphical jump for the console before release, while another developer compared it to a mid-range PC.

The system has also been shown to outperform the Xbox Series S in certain scenarios, and the latest comments on the hardware come from the famous developer Virtuos. According to the studio, the Nintendo Switch 2 is slightly weaker than the Xbox Series S.

Why it matters: Although the original Nintendo Switch already saw plenty of third-party support, fans can expect even greater support with its successor’s more capable hardware.

Xbox Series S|X Controller
Most Games Run At 60FPS On The Xbox Series S

For context, Virtuos has helped develop games such as Dark Souls Remastered, the recently released Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered, and more.

According to the studio, games that run at 60FPS on the Xbox Series S should be easy to port to the Nintendo Switch 2. The developer states that this is because, as far as GPU capabilities go, both consoles are fairly similar.

Any game shipping at 60FPS on the Series S should easily port to the Switch 2.

This also means that 30FPS Xbox Series S games that aren’t overly CPU-intensive should be easy to port in a similar fashion. However, titles that are limited to 30FPS due to complex animations, physics, and other elements that strain the CPU would be challenging to port.

One such game is expected to be GTA 6, which will likely be limited to 30FPS across all three major platforms next year. Still, this should mean that a majority of current-generation games will eventually make their way to the Nintendo console.

The Switch 2 Will Likely Punch Above Its Weight Just Like Its Predecessor

Virtuos also expects the console to outsell its predecessor in the future. If the initial sales are any indication, this is a very safe bet.

EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft, & Sony Still Want To Reserve Right To Discontinue A Game

Story Highlight
  • The Stop Killing Games petition has garnered nearly 1.2 million signatures, making it too large for giant corporations to ignore.
  • However, despite it becoming this, companies like Sony, Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft won’t give up the right to destroy games.
  • The board will discuss it further with the ones who have led the initiatives.

Recently, the “Stop Killing Games” petition has gained significant attention in the industry. The petition by European Citizens has garnered over a million signatures and is still booming with insane speed.

Even the EU IT has taken notice of it after conducting its due diligence to verify whether the signatures are fake; it will then send the petition to the member states. However, despite this, companies like Microsoft, EA, Activision, Epic Games, Embracer, Nintendo of Europe, Sony, Take-Two, Ubisoft (of course), Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Level Infinite, Warner Bros., and others still want to reserve the right to shut down a game

Why it matters: Taking a game offline or shutting it down, no matter the reason, is a crime because the consumer has already paid for it.

Statement on Stop Killing Games
Statement on Stop Killing Games From Major Companies

As the Stop Killing Games petition gained momentum in the industry, these giants also had to take notice. However, as of now, they won’t bend a knee, meaning help from a bigger power is much needed.

We appreciate the passion of our community; however, the decision to discontinue online services is multi-faceted, never taken lightly and must be an option for companies when an online experience is no longer commercially viable.

Recently, Ubisoft also updated its EULA, allowing it to shut down any game for any reason, and the owner has no recourse. In fact, the EULA states that the owner of the product must destroy all of the copies they have

Stop Killing Games
The Crew Shutdown Is One of the Main Reasons For This Recent Initiative

The board has attempted to justify the shutdown of games by claiming that they provide players with fair notice of upcoming changes. This still doesn’t justify anything. The board has also stated that titles designed to be played online-only, but which are not played by many players, become very expensive for developers to support.

If that’s an issue, why make such games at all? It is something the board would never answer, but it does aim to discuss it further with the ones who led this petition in the coming months.

Microsoft Lost Over $2 Billion Developing And Selling The Original Xbox

Story Highlight
  • An old report reveals Microsoft spent $12 billion and lost over $2 billion developing the original Xbox.
  • The console targeted over a billion homes to cover the costs and earn massive profits.
  • Microsoft wanted the Xbox to be the primary entertainment source for every home.

Microsoft is one of the biggest gaming names of all time. However, over 20 years ago, when it didn’t have the Xbox brand attached to it, things were quite different. A significant amount of effort and investment has gone into shaping the brand as it stands.

According to an old report, Microsoft invested a massive $12 billion in Xbox and had losses of over $2 billion in developing and selling the consoles. The company believed that the investment would pay up in the future.

Why it matters: Spending this much in the early 2000s, especially when big names like PlayStation and Nintendo were already dominating the market, was a risky move.

Xbox 360
Microsoft invested a lot of money in selling and developing the Xbox.

A report by Gale Power Search from 2005 revealed details about the newly launched PS3 at that time and how Microsoft planned to counter it. With the PS3, Sony wanted to blur the lines between the real world and computer-generated cyberworld

(Microsoft) has spent $12 billion and incurred losses of more than $2.4 billion developing and selling Xbox. It is targeting a billion homes with the world’s biggest software offer.

Microsoft wanted Xbox to rival PlayStation as a primary entertainment source.

Robbie Bach, head of Xbox at the time, said that they lost over $2 billion with Xbox because they believed it would be compensated for. The target was to reach a billion homes, where Xbox will be the primary entertainment device, sending text, video, and audio messages.

The investment was worth it, as the Xbox 360 went on to become one of the best consoles of all time. However, since then, the company has kind of lost its way with hardware. It is still a major player as a publisher, but with Xbox consoles, the future looks bleak
