How PlayStation’s Digital Store And Services Evolved With Time

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation’s history with digital distribution began during the PS3 generation.
  • Over the years, the gaming giant introduced the PlayStation gift card, upgraded PS Plus, and made other changes to its digital services.
  • The PS5 continues this legacy, offering the most expansive digital storefront Sony has ever had.

PlayStation has been part of the industry for a whopping 30+ years, and the gaming giant has been through a lot of changes since its inception. From the early days of the PS1 to the PS2’s domination, very few companies have been able to match PlayStation’s influence in the industry.

Perhaps the PS3 played the biggest role in shaping the modern era of PlayStation, introducing online gameplay and a digital storefront with the PlayStation Network.

Why it matters: PlayStation is home to over 100 million gamers across the globe, many of whom rely solely on digital purchases. Therefore, Sony has worked on bringing the PlayStation Store up to par with expectations over the years.

The Dawn of Digital Distribution

The PS3 Helped Bring Sony To The Digital Age

The PlayStation Store made its debut during the PS3 generation in the early 2000s. It was quite barebones at first, but Sony evolved the storefront into something much bigger over time.

At its core, the PlayStation Store aimed to offer digital content like games, movies, and more to millions of gamers. Sony also introduced PlayStation gift card in 2006, allowing players to bypass the need for a credit card when attempting to make digital purchases.

Expanding Digital Libraries

PlayStation 4
The PS4 Made Digital Libraries More Accessible Than Ever

This foundation was slowly built upon and soon grew into something much bigger. Once the PS4 was released, digital libraries became commonplace in the industry, and the advent of free-to-play titles meant that microtransaction purchases were booming worldwide.

Indie games also benefitted from the PlayStation Store’s growth since smaller teams were able to skip physical distribution. Games like Journey, Limbo, and The Binding of Isaac pushed the boundaries of what the medium could do within small budgets, and much of their success came directly from PlayStation Store transactions.

A New Era of Digital Gaming

Today, the PS4 and PS5 work together to serve millions of PlayStation customers. Between PlayStation Plus, games, DLC, and microtransactions, digital purchases are bigger than ever on Sony’s latest consoles, and the PlayStation gift card makes them incredibly accessible for millions of gamers.

For nearly twenty years, the PlayStation gift card has unlocked new possibilities for gamers.

The current popularity of digital gaming means that these gift cards are even more popular today, and they can even be found at a cheap price if you’re willing to look for solid deals on marketplaces online.

Indie vs. AAA Gaming: Why Smaller Studios Are Taking Bigger Risks

Story Highlight
  • Indie games offer more creativity and unique gameplay than AAA titles today.
  • This is primarily due to the smaller teams and passion behind these projects.
  • AAA projects offer a more refined experience, but they tend to stick with a tried-and-true formula that has worked before.

The divide between indie and AAA titles still exists, but smaller titles have quickly begun to catch up in recent years. In 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has come up as the biggest surprise of the year, marking an unprecedented success for a new studio with a limited budget and fewer than 50 developers.

Elsewhere, other titles like Hollow Knight and Palworld highlight the excellence of indie gaming. Going by these recent successes, it’s become clear that indie and AA releases are taking more risks today, while AAA gaming has somewhat stagnated.

Why it matters: In the modern era, indie games can compete with their AAA counterparts, leading to exciting options for gamers.

The Underdog Spirit

Hollow Knight Silkson
Fans Have Shown Incredible Excitement For Indie IPs Like Hollow Knight In Recent Years

Indie games are typically born in small rooms with a bunch of developers looking to prove their worth. These teams are often brimming with creativity and ideas, which leads to exceptional games in the long run.

Indie developers are also free of the pressure that often comes with AAA development. Shareholders, industry tropes, and other similar factors don’t play much of a role in indie games, allowing such studios to experiment with unconventional ideas and concepts.

This is exactly why titles like Celeste, Stardew Valley, Undertale, and more have left such a lasting impression on players around the globe.

The AAA Experience

God of War Ragnarok PlayStation
AAA Games Sometimes Fail To Take Enough Risks

On the flipside, AAA games are blockbuster experiences that deliver cutting-edge visuals and polish. If you grab a Steam keys for a game like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077, you likely expect everything to be perfect.

This means that AAA teams have little room for risk. They usually play it safe due to necessity, as companies typically expect a solid return on their investments, and the last thing a team wants is to be shut down due to a failed experiment.

Risks Within Indie Development

Hades 2
Hades Is Among The Most Well-Known Indie IPs of The Modern Era

Risk-taking is a natural part of an indie game’s production. These teams can’t sell their games on brand value or their studio’s name alone, so an innovative idea is their safest bet, which requires a level of risk most AAA teams usually avoid.

Indie developers can also quickly iterate on existing ideas and implement them without much hassle. On the other hand, pitches in AAA teams may sometimes be lost due to the lengthy approval process.

This is exactly why titles like Hades have been so successful in the past. It only helps that such games can be purchased at a cheap price on platforms like Steam, thanks to widely accessible Steam keys.

Ultimately, both types of games satisfy the needs of gamers. Most people enjoy both indie and AAA titles, so it’s great to see both industries producing enjoyable gaming experiences today.

Finding solid deals on indie and AAA titles can also make your gaming journey even better, allowing you to build your Steam library through affordable games.

Ubisoft Likely To Delist Original Assassin’s Creed 4 For The Remake

Story Highlight
  • Recently, Ubisoft made changes to its EULA, which now states that the company can shut down any of its services for any reason at any time.
  • There have been some updates added to the original AC4’s Steam page.
  • This suggests that the company may delist the original title for the remake.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake is confirmed to be in development, but Ubisoft has yet to confirm its release window. As it is one of the best games in the series, fans are patiently waiting for the official confirmation.

Recently, updates were added to the Steam page of the original title, indicating that a release is nearly here. However, adding updates to the original title’s page makes no sense unless the company aims to delist it and replace it with the remake instead.

Why it matters: Delisting or taking a game offline should be a violation, as people have paid for that title. A massive petition is underway to prevent companies from doing it, but the major publishers remain opposed.

Updates To Assassin's Creed 4
Updates Made To Assassin’s Creed 4 On Steam

Ubisoft recently updated its EULA, which states that the company reserves the right to shut down any of its games at any time for any reason. In such cases, users would be required to delete all copies of the product. The EULA further states that it is the consumer’s responsibility to be aware of any changes made to the EULA, as the company won’t notify them.

This is done mainly to avoid legal trouble, as Ubisoft was recently sued for shutting down the servers of The Crew. The company filed a motion to dismiss on the grounds that players were never promised full ownership of the game, as they had only been granted a limited license for a specified period.

Due to this, the company has revised its EULA, and it is evident that Ubisoft intends to follow the same practice again. As the changes were made to the original game’s Steam page, it is highly likely that the title will be delisted, and the remake will be available instead.

This is, of course, not fair at all, as if a fan doesn’t like the remake, they won’t be able to go back to play the original title. Given the recent condition of Ubisoft, it is unlikely to satisfy the fandom as it aims to change the gameplay

Nonetheless, we hope the company doesn’t delist the original title. What do you think about Ubisoft potentially delisting Assassin’s Creed 4 for the remake? Do you think it would be justifiable? Assassin’s Creed 4 Steam Page Updated With New Features; Suggests Remake Coming Soon

Story Highlight
  • The Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Steam page has been updated with some new features.
  • This means that the remake of the game is set to release pretty soon.
  • Insiders have revealed that the remake is expected next year, so it could be shadow-dropped at Ubisoft’s Forward.

Assassin’s Creed games used to be perfect back in the day. They were fun to play, and no political agendas were forced on them. One such title in the franchise was Black Flag. A massive fan base loved Assassin’s Creed 4 due to its robust naval gameplay, open world, and, of course, the epic portrayal of the golden age of piracy.

The release of this game’s remake has been rumored for a long time, and fans have been eagerly awaiting Ubisoft’s confirmation of the date. A new Steam update has suggested that it is coming pretty soon.

Why it matters: Assassin’s Creed 4 is considered one of the best titles in he history of the series, so the fandom is pretty excited for its remake

The following are some of the additions made to the Steam page of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag that were not present in the original release:

  • Custom Volume Controls
  • Stereo Sound
  • Surround Sound
  • Mouse Only Option
  • Adjustable Difficulty
  • Save Anytime

These are the types of options that you would usually find in a remaster or a remake of a game, so fans may be in luck. Some reputable insiders have also revealed that the reveal is expected in early 2026, so it would make sense for the company to make the announcement.

However, as the remake is expected early next year, it is worth noting that, according to an insider, the company has prepared an Ubisoft Forward for next year. The company could announce the remake during the forward and shadow drop it on the platforms, just like Xbox did with The Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion remastered.

Fans are a bit skeptical about Ubisoft releasing the remake, as the company has already confirmed that changes will be made to the gameplay. For reference, recent Assassin’s Creed or any Ubisoft game has received a lot of criticism because of its boring gameplay

It is also worth noting that the ship-to-ship combat in Assassin’s Creed 4 is considered significantly better than Skulls and Bones, which was released in 2024. So, if the company makes some tweaks in the former, it may not be for the better.

Fallout 3 Remaster From Bethesda Is Being Worked On, Suggests Insider

Story Highlight
  • A trusted insider has hinted at the development of multiple Fallout projects at Bethesda.
  • He states that this includes one project that fans want to see, suggesting Fallout 3 Remastered is being worked on.
  • All projects are still in the early stages of development.

The Fallout franchise gained immense popularity following last year’s successful TV adaptation. Since then, fans have longed for more content related to the franchise, but not much has been said by Bethesda.

Fortunately, an insider reports that multiple new Fallout projects are in development, including one that is very likely to be Fallout 3 Remastered.

Why it matters: Barring Fallout 76, Bethesda has not done much with Fallout despite the excitement for the IP in recent years.

According to VGC journalist Jordan Middler, the multiple projects include one that fans have been wanting for a long time.

There are multiple Fallout projects in development, including the one you’re all wanting.

Because fans have called out for a return to Fallout 3 Remastered for the longest time, it would be reasonable to expect said project to be Fallout Remastered. Interestingly, this is not the first time a remaster of this particular entry has been discussed.

Previously, Fallout 3 Remastered was leaked alongside The Elder Scrolls 4 Remastered. The latter was released earlier this year, so there is valid reason to believe the Fallout IP will receive similar treatment.

Adding to the information, the journalist suggests that these projects are still in early development, so fans may have to wait a while before official news is released from Bethesda itself.

Fallout 3
Fans Have Been Rallying For A Fallout 3 Remaster For A While

Bethesda is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6, so the studio is likely working with other teams on the potential remaster.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Remastered was developed by Virtuos, so a similar studio with experience working on third-party partnerships may be involved in bringing the classic Fallout title to life.

Players Asking EA To Save Anthem, Following Stop Killing Games Petition Rise in Popularity

Story Highlight
  • Anthem fans are asking EA to save the game by adding an offline mode.
  • The game’s servers will shut down on 12th January 2026.
  • While that fandom is asking EA to save the game, the publisher is unlikely to do so.

Recently, gamers took matters into their own hands and started a massive petition to stop killing the games. The petition garnered over 1 million signatures quickly, prompting the EU IT to take notice.

Even massive publishers have come together and refuse to acknowledge what the fandom demands. Even after the rise in popularity of the petition, these gaming giants still want to reserve their rights to kill a game whenever they want to, for whatever reason. Following that, fans have requested that EA save Anthem by adding an offline mode.

Why it matters: Killing games that fans have paid money for should be a crime and must not be allowed at any cost. The giant publishers are opposed to the Stop Killing Games petition, but they should at least add an offline mode to the game for fans who still want to play the title.

Those not in the know, Anthem is shutting down on January 12, 2026, so people who spent $60 on the game won’t own it anymore next year, which should be considered a violation. That is exactly why European citizens have taken the initiative to launch a ‘Stop Killing Games’ campaign.

There are many people supporting this campaign, but the publishers refuse to budge, as why would they ever listen to the fandom? Now, fans are asking EA to release an offline mode for Anthem before the servers are inevitably taken offline, which the publisher is unlikely to listen to.

I wish they would enable offline mode or P2P.

Offline mode. I haven’t played it in years, but I really don’t see how they can’t do this.

Anthem's Storyline Had Potential
EA is taking Anthem offline next year on January 12th

While the fandom wants an offline mode, it is worth noting that the game completely stops whenever the internet connection goes offline, so it is designed to be played with an active internet connection.

Additionally, if enemy interactions are server-based, as in World of Warcraft and Destiny, then it would be nearly impossible to develop an offline mod unless it undergoes a major overhaul, which EA is unlikely to do.

Private servers are also an option, but that would be pretty risky, so it is unlikely fans will get what they want.

Bethesda Has 15 Games With Over 20 Million Monthly Active Players

Story Highlight
  • According to an employee, Bethesda has multiple games with over 20 million monthly players.
  • The company has some of the best titles of all time, including Elder Scrolls and Fallout.
  • Bethesda was acquired by Xbox in 2021, so it generated huge revenue for them.

Bethesda Softworks is among the biggest names in the gaming industry. While the company hasn’t been at the top of its game for the last few years, the quality franchises and titles it has pumped out over the years are second to none.

This shows considering a new update has revealed that Bethesda has 15 games that have over 20 million monthly active players. This is a huge number, as with most companies, you don’t have this many games with this huge player base.

Why it matters: Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and more, Bethesda has been behind some massive hits of all time. These are some timeless classics that still have players hooked to them, despite years since their release.

Bethesda has multiple games with over 20 million active players

According to a new update on Axel Posset’s LinkedIn, Lead NOC Administrator at Bethesda, they supported 15 titles with over 20 million active monthly players, highlighting what a major impact the company has on the industry.

The posting doesn’t reveal the names of the games, but we can guess some of them. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is undoubtedly one of the top games on the list. Others could include Fallout 4, Fallout Shelter, and more.

Xbox showcase
Bethesda was acquired by Xbox in 2021

This also shows how important Bethesda is for Microsoft as well. If this many of their games are doing this well, we can expect that a huge chunk of Xbox’s revenue comes from them. Microsoft acquired the company in 2021.

Of course, Microsoft and Bethesda have recently been under fire after layoffs and cancelling funding for Romero Games and certain other projects. However, many fans hope Bethesda can bounce back with The Elder Scrolls 6

Memory Prices Surge As Much As 45% In 2025; DDR4 Format Sees Biggest Impact

Story Highlight
  • DDR4, DDR5, GDDR6, and GDDR7 modules have become more expensive in 2025.
  • A report highlights that DDR4 pricing has risen by as much as 45% due to supply shortages.
  • The price hikes could affect smartphones, gaming consoles, graphics cards, and other related products.

DRAM prices have been on the rise over the last year, and this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. Amid increasing demand for DDR5 memory, a new report outlines upcoming price hikes for all sectors that utilize this memory standard.

Similarly, the GDDR6 format used in graphics cards and other hardware has seen a price increase.

Why it matters: Memory is an integral component of every modern piece of technology. Therefore, price hikes will affect phones, computers, gaming consoles, and other products.

Memory Price Hike
Memory Price Hike Estimates via TrendForce

As reported by TrendForce, DDR4 modules have seen a price hike of up to 45% in Q3 2025. This is largely due to the limited supply of DDR4 memory, leading to hoarding of modules from various companies and system builders.

Elsewhere, the newer formats, including DDR5 and GDDR6, remain expensive to produce. The same is true of the newly introduced GDDR7, which is used in Nvidia’s latest RTX 5000 graphics cards.

The price increase varies between 3% and 45%, with DDR4 being the most heavily impacted in the consumer sector. This is concerning, as consumer mobile phones may also be heavily affected by this trend.

Adding to the bad news, major Korean and US suppliers have confirmed plans to reduce LPDDR4X supply, raising further concerns for the smartphone industry.

The only way forward might be widespread adoption of DDR5. Although this format has become commonplace in the latest devices, the current popularity of DDR4 will lead to a major impact on the tech industry.

It would not be surprising to see prices rise further, so it may be best to plan ahead for those looking to purchase new devices or memory in the future.

Nintendo Has Officially Begun Raising Switch 2 Prices Globally Due to Market Conditions

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo has officially started raising Switch 2 prices globally due to changing market conditions.
  • The console is now $40 more costly in Saudi Arab with demand through the roof.
  • More price hikes in other regions are expected due to new tariffs imposed by the US government.

Despite the lack of hype and an unconventional rollout, the Nintendo Switch 2 became the biggest console launch ever. The handheld’s demand is still through the roof, and Nintendo is struggling to fulfil it.

Amidst the console shortage, Nintendo has also raised the price of the Switch 2 globally. This price effect resulted from changes in global market conditions, as per Nintendo’s official market partner in Saudi Arabia.

Why it matters: The Switch 2 already costs more than its predecessor. Accounting for the console shortage and an even higher retail price, it would be challenging for gamers to obtain the console.

Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World
Nintendo has apologised for not meeting the demand for the Switch 2, as the Console Shortage is expected to last until next Year

According to the AIC, Nintendo’s official third-party distributor, the price of the Switch 2 has increased from SAR 1999 ($533) to SAR 2149 ($573). The $40 difference is still huge, already considering that the handheld was $33 more expensive than regular retail.

This price effect applies only to the Switch 2 and not to its accessories.

Furthermore, it’s also speculated that the handheld’s price will continue to change throughout the rest of the regions sooner or later after the US government imposes new tariffs.

Meanwhile, fans aren’t happy with their purchase a month after the Switch 2’s launch, claiming that it doesn’t justify the higher price tag.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo is under the threat of being sued for the right to brick any Switch 2 device

Microsoft has already raised the prices of the Xbox Series consoles, with the Series X costing as much as $600. Sooner or later, Sony is also expected to follow suit with their PS5 consoles.

The original Switch has also seen a price hike in recent times due to the same changing market conditions.

Mafia: The Old Country Is Getting Criticized By Fans For Being “Generic” Like A 2013 Game

Story Highlight
  • Mafia: The Old Country is being criticized by fans online for being too generic.
  • Many think that the game does nothing revolutionary and is akin to the last entry in the franchise, which came out a decade ago.
  • The game has a $50 price tag and will be more linear.

Mafia: The Old Country has been very hyped among fans, especially due to its more linear approach to the franchise and a $50 price tag, unlike most modern AAA games. The game finally revealed its gameplay in new footage released yesterday, and many compared the 2K title to Uncharted.

However, the overall reception of the footage has been mixed at best, and a lot of fans are rather disappointed in the gameplay, calling Mafia: The Old Country a very generic title.

Why it matters: Mafia is a tentpole AAA franchise, and another middling entry won’t do it any favors after the average third title.

Mafia the old country
Fans think Mafia: The Old Country resembles a 2013 game.

The 13-minute gameplay footage has failed to drum up interest among fans, with one fan on the Mafia subreddit saying they were glad not to order the game. Mafia has never been a groundbreaking franchise, but fans are still disappointed to see nothing new of note in the gameplay footage.

Fans on Twitter stated that there is nothing worthy of discussion in the new gameplay footage, with everything being rather generic, even the graphics. The franchise has always relied heavily on its story and unique settings to make a mark, and gamers think Mafia: The Old Country will have a similar task.

Many fans were even harsher on the gameplay, saying that it resembles Mafia 3, a game that is almost 10 years old. Others pointed out it looked like a 2013 video game and also noticed a graphical downgrade compared to the trailer, which is an indictment for a game built in Unreal Engine 5

Mafia: The Old Country New Trailer TGA 2024
This is what Mafia: The Old Country looked like in the trailer.

Hence, the overall sentiment regarding Mafia: The Old Country is that it’s a generic action game that definitely won’t blow you away, but considering how it will retail at $50, it might not be a major problem.

Mafia: The Old Country is set to launch in August and with a less bloated open world, the adventure title will offer a more linear experience.

Capcom No Longer Giving Lecture On Monster Hunter Wilds PC Optimization After Backlash

Story Highlight
  • Capcom was set to host an optimization lecture featuring Monster Hunter Wilds at CEDEC later this month.
  • This panel has now been cancelled due to public backlash and threats.
  • Despite the game’s success, it continues to receive criticism over PC performance.

Monster Hunter Wilds quickly became Capcom’s fastest-selling title earlier this year, but the game was held back by severe optimization issues. Whether it be on PC or consoles, the game ran poorly across all platforms.

Not much has changed since then. Monster Hunter Wilds remains in a similar state, prompting an interesting response when Capcom revealed a lecture on the game’s optimization for CEDEC 2025. However, days after the announcement, this lecture has now been cancelled.

Why it matters: PC optimization has led to a lot of concerns in recent years, so fans were not too happy when Monster Hunter Wilds was picked as an example of a smooth experience on the platform.

Monster Hunter Wilds CEDEC 2025 Lecture
Monster Hunter Wilds Lecture Plan via CEDEC Website

The lecture was officially scheduled for July 24, but the CEDEC website shows that it has been cancelled.

For context, CEDEC is a huge game development conference for all Japanese developers. It should also be noted that the lecture was specifically based on the game’s PC version, which is by far the worst platform for the game.

According to reports, public backlash to the announcement is directly responsible for this decision. Capcom has received several comments on social media recently, with many pointing out the poor state of Monster Hunter Wilds.

It is also reported that the gaming giant saw threats and harassment from fans, which likely contributed significantly to the final decision.

Analysts like Digital Foundry previously criticized Monster Hunter Wilds for performing poorly despite its outdated visuals. The game depicts all the problems associated with modern PC ports, which is made all the worse by Capcom’s relatively solid history of past PC releases.

Since launch, the gaming giant continues to work on updates to improve the Monster Hunter Wilds experience on PC. A recent tweet from July 4 outlines additional plans to pursue improvements, but it remains to be seen if future updates will bring the PC port up to par with expectations.

What do you think about Monster Hunter Wilds and the cancelled lecture? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
