Stop Killing Games Petition Fails To Affect Gaming Giants!

Story Highlight
  • The Stop Killing Games petition has garnered nearly 1.2 million signatures, making it too large for giant corporations to ignore.
  • However, despite it becoming this, companies like Sony, Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft won’t give up the right to destroy games.
  • The board will discuss it further with the ones who have led the initiatives.

Recently, the “Stop Killing Games” petition has gained significant attention in the industry. The petition by European Citizens has garnered over a million signatures and is still booming with insane speed.

Even the EU IT has taken notice of it after conducting its due diligence to verify whether the signatures are fake; it will then send the petition to the member states. However, despite this, companies like Microsoft, EA, Activision, Epic Games, Embracer, Nintendo of Europe, Sony, Take-Two, Ubisoft (of course), Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Level Infinite, Warner Bros., and others still want to reserve the right to shut down a game

Why it matters: Taking a game offline or shutting it down, no matter the reason, is a crime because the consumer has already paid for it.

As the Stop Killing Games petition gained momentum in the industry, these giants also had to take notice. However, as of now, they won’t bend a knee, meaning help from a bigger power is much needed.

We appreciate the passion of our community; however, the decision to discontinue online services is multi-faceted, never taken lightly and must be an option for companies when an online experience is no longer commercially viable.

Recently, Ubisoft also updated its EULA, allowing it to shut down any game for any reason, and the owner has no recourse. In fact, the EULA states that the owner of the product must destroy all of the copies they have

The Crew Shutdown Is One of the Main Reasons For This Recent Initiative

The board has attempted to justify the shutdown of games by claiming that they provide players with fair notice of upcoming changes. This still doesn’t justify anything. The board has also stated that titles designed to be played online-only, but which are not played by many players, become very expensive for developers to support.

If that’s an issue, why make such games at all? It is something the board would never answer, but it does aim to discuss it further with the ones who led this petition in the coming months.
