- According to a developer on 007: First Light, GTA 6 NPC technology is 10 years ahead of the industry.
- The scale at which NPC crowds are being simulated concurrently in the title is incomparable to any other game.
- As per the programmer, IO Interactive wasn’t able to simulate this many NPCs at the same time even in 007: First Light.
With its extended gameplay showcase, GTA 6 has squashed any doubters who thought the game wouldn’t be a generational leap and set a new standard for the industry. With detailed systems for menial mechanics like working out and over 600,000 animations, the upcoming title is going to set the bar very high for the industry.
The NPC crowds in GTA 6 have already stunned the entire gaming world in yesterday’s presentation, with even the most vocal critics praising the lively sandbox Rockstar has created. As it turns out, the studio’s NPC technology might not be recreated for another decade by competing studios.
Why it matters: The Netflix showcase and its aftermath have just confirmed what fans already knew; GTA 6 is going to be the new industry standard for quite a while.

According to 007: First Light developer Berkay Dursun, the NPC technology being used in GTA 6 is at least 10 years ahead of everyone else in the gaming industry. While responding to a post that compared the NPC crowds in the game to IO Interactive’s Hitman, Dursun said that the crowd technology he worked on for the title can’t be compared to GTA 6.
As per the programmer, every character in the Rockstar title is simulated individually at a scale that puts the NPC crowds in GTA 6 a decade ahead of every other studio.
Dursun doubled down by saying that the number of NPCs IO Interactive could simulate at the same time in 007: First Light isn’t even close to what Rockstar is pulling off.

Considering how GTA 6 is using 10x the animations compared to its predecessor, alongside detailed relationship mechanics, there is no doubt that Rockstar is far ahead of every other dev in the industry when it comes to NPC’s.
Do you think any game will be able to animate NPCs at the scale Rockstar is currently doing in the next few years, or is no one going to catch the studio? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
