- BioWare co-founder blasts the Saudi takeover as the reason for BioWare’s closure.
- The leadership doesn’t understand development, and EA doesn’t deserve the studio.
- He expects them to just move to easier sports games and maybe Battlefield.
EA recently made headlines when it announced that it is shuttering its massive studio behind some of the company’s most popular franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. A studio co-founder has also weighed in on this.
The BioWare co-founder says that the Saudi EA takeover deal is the reason the studio was shut down and that it was the final nail in the coffin. The studio was struggling, but the deal eliminated its chances of survival.
Why it matters: In fact, the studio had been struggling for years, especially after Dragon Age: The Veilguard bombed in terms of reviews and sales, and there were already rumors of an imminent closure.

Talking to 80LV, Greg Zeschuk, who retired in 2012, was furious at the executives, stating that they never even made a game. He says that EA didn’t deserve a team like that, and the Saudi takeover was just the final blow.
I think it was the final nail in the coffin. I think that was the crux of it in a sense. Once again it’s a completely different company now.

He continued that the core of the studio was to make complex games that took several years of hard work to develop, but he suspects that the new leadership just wants to make easy sports games, and maybe Battlefield.
This indeed seems true; EA’s major focus has been on these games lately. It canceled the in-development Mass Effect 5, and there are no reports on whether they even plan on keeping the IP for another studio.
