- EA has shut down BioWare and laid off 400 developers.
- The team was working on Mass Effect 5, but the game has also been cancelled.
- EA intends to focus on IPs like Apex Legends, Iron Man, and its sports titles moving forward.
After going private earlier this year, EA developers feared layoffs within the publisher. Although teams like BioWare were working on important titles like the next big Mass Effect, EA has now announced a new wave of layoffs.
In a shocking turn of events, the publisher has also confirmed that BioWare is now shutting down and Mass Effect 5 is being cancelled.
Why it matters: Many already expected that BioWare would face the brunt of EA’s layoffs following the recent Saudi takeover, but the studio has been shuttered altogether.

As shared on Twitter/X, EA has confirmed that it will let go of 400 employees, marking a headcount reduction of 3%. In addition to shutting down BioWare, the publisher has decided to axe Mass Effect 5.
EA says that it will instead focus on IPs like Fight Night, Marvel’s Iron Man, Apex Legends, etc. for the time being. Unfortunately, BioWare and its IPs aren’t part of EA’s future plans any longer.
This announcement comes following the disappointment of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a game many believed would leave lasting impacts on BioWare. In fact, BioWare itself has struggled game after game, with similar issues dating all the way back to Mass Effect Andromeda’s release.

Many have been saddened by this announcement. Although BioWare has not been at its best in many years, audiences continue to express their frustration over the state of the industry and its layoffs.
