- A former EA executive doesn’t have much hope for the publisher’s portfolio following the acquisition from Saudi Arabia.
- It is said that new management will focus mainly on the EA Sports titles, leaving an IP like Mass Effect in limbo.
- EA’s new owners could even pull the plug on these legacy IPs, depending on what they deem financially viable.
BioWare’s next big project, Mass Effect 5, is currently in development. However, EA has undergone major structural changes during this time, becoming a private company owned by Saudi Arabia.
This acquisition has many interesting implications for the publisher’s future, but one former executive believes IPs like Mass Effect may not survive the new management.
Why it matters: EA owns a slew of fan-favorite IPs that haven’t seen much action lately. Even big franchises such as Need for Speed have been dormant for a while despite their prestige.
Emmanuel Rosier, a former EA manager, recently spoke about the publisher’s future under Saudi Arabia’s PIF.
He believes the studio’s new owner will be happy to keep funding EA Sports’ portfolio, particularly due to excitement around sports like Football in the region. On the other hand, the former manager thinks less obvious IPs like Mass Effect may not be as lucky.
Pointing to BioWare’s recent struggles, Emmanuel Rosier remains skeptical about the team’s future. According to the former executive, it’s very possible for EA to pull the plug on iconic IPs like Mass Effect moving forward, especially if the new management lacks particular sentiment for these franchises.
They’ve been struggling as a studio, and I don’t know if they will keep funding that one.

It’s also possible that studios like BioWare will be sold under EA’s new management, relegating the publisher to a studio focused entirely on sports titles. Ultimately, the new leadership will make the most financially viable decision, caring little for the legacy of many of those IPs.
