Bungie Was Developing 5 To 6 Live-Service Games After Sony Buyout, But Most Of Them Were Canned

Bungie Suffered A Lot Of Project Cancellations Over The Years!

Story Highlight
  • An insider says Bungie was working on 5 to 6 live-service titles at the time Sony acquired it.
  • Sony wanted to see these games launch, but most of them were cancelled for one reason or another.
  • Marathon and Bungie’s mobile game Destiny Rising came out over the years, but only to mixed success.

Bungie has become one of Sony’s most tragic studios over the years, with multiple failures, reports of toxicity, and rampant layoffs that have halved its workforce in recent months. Its future also appears quite dark as Marathon continues with mediocre player reception.

A new report now reveals that the studio was working on 5 to 6 live-service titles about four years ago, during the era of Sony’s buyout. Bungie appeared to be in good hands back then with its multiple offerings, and Sony was also excited to see those games come out.

However, most of these games were internally cancelled for one reason or another before they could be publicly announced. The titles it managed to launch years down the road also only saw mixed performance.

Why it matters: Bungie once was heading towards a much brighter future, but its projects reportedly fell apart after the Sony acquisition. The games it launched have also not performed that well, which makes the sunsetting of Destiny 2 even more worrisome.

This tidbit comes from reliable insider Jason Schreier on YouTube, who reports that Bungie only launched its mobile offering, Destiny Rising, and the live-service behemoth Marathon after its other titles meant to launch over the years were canned.

Bungie also had a whole bunch of other live service games in the works that Sony was wanted to see come out in the subsequent years in addition to, of course, Destiny 2.

The situation appears even worse for Bungie after it ended the development of Destiny 2, which was its only major moneymaker besides Marathon.

But for a variety of reasons [,…] most of those projects fell apart. I believe there were five or six different projects that were happening. Some of them did come out.

Destiny 2 development ended
Bungie’s future appears to be grim.

It was also previously revealed that the studio lost Sony $565 million, as reported in the Q4 2026 report. Bungie intends to recover its losses with consistent Marathon support in the future, even with its mixed reception.
