- The next-gen Xbox handheld is set to launch in the 2027 Holiday season.
- Convincing players to choose Xbox for portable mobile play could be the aim behind this hardware.
- Asha Sharma has also teased that the next-gen hardware from the company will be a family of devices.
Ever since Asha Sharma replaced Phil Spencer earlier this year, Xbox has been in constant motion, trying to flip the narrative around the company. From the return of exclusives to multiple rounds of layoffs, the gaming giant has seen too many highs and lows already considering Sharma only took over the leadership in February.
However, despite the rollercoaster ride, the company is expected to return to growth in 2027, with positive sentiment around Team Green already increasing by 30%. Now, a new report has revealed Asha Sharma’s overarching plan for Xbox, and it may include a new console release next year.
Why it matters: Considering how the company has never made a native handheld, it will be interesting to see how the device performs in the current climate surrounded by rising memory prices.

According to a new report from Fortune, Asha Sharma is planning to release a next-generation Xbox handheld in the 2027 holiday season. As per the article, creating hardware that allows players to choose Xbox for mobile play could be the aim behind this handheld, and Sharma has been scratching heads with lead deisgners to figure out the perfect device.
The handheld has been teased by the company’s leadership since early 2024, with Phil Spencer hinting at a native device from Microsoft. However, a report last year suggested that Xbox had given up on making a next-gen handheld after AMD demanded that the device must go on to sell at least 10 million units.
Rumors regarding the hardware started appearing once again this year, with Microsoft adamant on making a handheld despite focusing on the next-gen console. From the looks of it, the company is finally getting its wish.

With Asha Sharma also teasing that the next-gen Xbox Helix will be a family of devices built for affordability and choice, it is all but confirmed that Microsoft’s handheld is happening. However, with the PS6 not even having a fixed release date yet, the 2027 launch window is certainly a big move from Team Green.
